D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S Welcome to Dominican! We are thrilled to share this most special experience with you tonight, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s epic musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. This is truly a life’s work in my instance, in that from the moment I first heard that G-minor chord in 1987, I wanted to sing it, play every part, see it, see it again, and perhaps one day direct a production. I have grown up with this show, and it has been in and out of my life, our family’s life, friend’s lives and careers, the American and world theatre culture, and now as a jewel of my high school directing career. I am so very proud to share what you are about to see. This experience is the collaboration of so very many special and hard-working individuals. My thanks are to my incredible Tech Director, Lighting Designer and friend, Bryn Van Beek. You have run this ship so well and look at what you’ve done. I’m speechless. My mom, Barb, for coordinating many rental costumes and, of course adding the touches of her own, and her costume moms and their work. Beautiful. Our build crew led by our tag-team of amazing alum Thomas Herzfeld and rookie dad Mark Mayer. You have helped transform this space to another world and time and place. Thanks, guys. To my choreographer and friend, Michael, thank you for your touches and your presence with our students always. To our sound designer and coordinator and proud alum, Mike Michaud – another year and more magic and dedication from you. To Karen Dolan for helping my mom with coordinate every dress, hat, wig, shoe, and help coordinate our amazing volunteers. To her husband, Joe Dolan for running our ticketing system, and providing access to our amazing audience to share this experience. To Mike and Maggi Brauer for fundraising, sewing, painting, cheerleading, and mainly supporting everything this school and our program does. To MaryAnn and Kelly Vance and their 9-year support of everything that happens in this room and with our students. Your love and support is felt by so many and we are deeply grateful for your service. Our administration and school has supported us so very much in these efforts. To Leann Giese, thank you for believing in this, for helping us get there, and for providing resources. To Ed Foy and Brian Geittmann, thanks for your leadership. Pam Keller, Joan Moroder, Ben Weiler, Allison Belongea, Trinny Schumann, Lindsay Price, and all of our DHS Faculty and Staff – we do these plays, but you are the reason students succeed here and grow and develop. Thank you. To my family and especially the spouses of all of my staff here – thank you for allowing us to do this. We’re very grateful to you and our students shine because of you. To our students -- look what you’ve done. Way to go. You believed in this, you took every challenge and completely made it your own project and own accomplishment. I am exceptionally impressed with how you have taken to this material. You have risen to the level of the maturity, the depth, the difficult music, and the beautiful storytelling. Your passion and willingness to share that with each other is amazing to watch. Our crew – look what you’ve done. You have just done every single thing we’ve asked you and have found solutions, made decisions, improved on our ideas, and worked and worked to get every single thing right. You should be very proud. We are. Enjoy this experience – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And personally, I’m very jealous of you actors. Wow, what a thrill. 2

I want to thank my childhood friends for sharing this experience with me twenty-five years ago. For singing the tape (yes, tape) over and over, for waiting a year to get tickets and experiencing the show in 1989, for having this be the show that was just out there and untouchable. For my dear friend Steve, “Slab” -- thanks for always making singing cool and always singing higher and better than I ever could. Thanks for being around on this one – it means a great, great deal to have you here after all of these years. And thanks, of course, and again, for the Dr. Pepper. We have had a lot of people raise money for us this year and support these efforts. You have given of your time and talent, and your resources. You believe in our students, our program, our mission, and our school. They are better because you gave of yourselves. Thank you. To our theatre alums – every single one of you is in this show. Every single one of you we’ve thought of or remembered, or found a talent in a current student that reminds us of you. You have all got us to the point where we can do a show like this, and you all constantly live on here with us in the auditorium, Little Theatre, and in our hearts. We’re proud of you and grateful to you for paving the way. All of you. Thank you all for coming and joining us. Enjoy yourself tonight, and watch your head. Jeff Schaetzke
