ARTISTIC & EXECUTIVE LEADERS NOTES

Thank you for joining us at the Annual American Spanish Dance and Music Festival, titled this year, Zafiro (Sapphire) Flamenco Festival in honor of our 45th anniversary New Era, New Works, New Legacies These concerts mark the Ensemble Español’s first live performances since the pandemic with guest artists and musicians. Dame Libby Komaiko’s passion for Spanish dance was only exceeded by her passion for excellence, education and community. She was an inspiration to all who met her. This includes beloved former board member, Dr. Miguel Suarez, father of artistic director, Irma Suarez Ruiz and Jose Barrios, guest resident artist and choreographer, whom left us too soon this past season. We dedicate this year’s festival in their honor. Tonight we continue celebrating Dame Libby’s remarkable gift of her art in the creation, life, and continuing mission of the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater and Center at our in resident home, Northeastern Illinois University. In Dame Libby’s spirit, we continued our work and training and outreach during the pandemic finding new ways to work with each other and our dance colleagues and students locally, nationally and internationally. We found ways to virtually adapt our artistic efforts of training and studying with our dancers and teachers while keeping our administrative business work and program support moving forward. Guest artists, teachers, choreographers, producers and directors from Chicago, to New York, Miami, Washington D.C., Ohio, Mexico and Spain were able to join us virtually sharing their art and talents with our dancers and staff. Our talented wonderful dancers began sharing their creativity with project ideas like the virtual Flamenco world premiere of Duquelando, to the music of David Dorantes, filmed in their homes and in their neighborhood vicinity’s. This work was dedicated to all front line workers and the Black Lives Matter movement. Other wonderful project ideas the dancers and staff shared included; -Dancing an excerpt of Dame Libby’s Bolero from our homes; -Video commentary series beginning with Ron de Jesus’s Flamenco contemporary ballet, Mil Clavos; -Festival memory video with audio commentaries by the dancers and past guest artists last June 2020; -Record photo album project depicting our dancers in classic artists and musicians poses. These are just a few projects that kept us going and connected. Please visit our website and You Tube channel where you’ll find over 50 videos including tutorials and performances by both adult and youth company. This evening’s company preview works by Nino de los Reyes, with support by Wendy Clinard, are sample’s of the hybrid adaptation process our dancers wholeheartedly gave to present the art form of Flamenco while under challenging protocols for safety of all involved.

Her passionate pioneering creations are respected and hailed throughout the Americas and internationally. In 1983 she became the first American artist in history to be decorated with Spain’s highest honor, the “Lazo de Dama de Isabel la Católica” by Juan Carlos I, King of Spain, for her superlative work in spreading the cultural and artistic values of Spain throughout the U.S. Dame Libby began her dance training and performance in classical ballet and character dance as a young child with Elisa Stigler at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. As a teen, she studied and performed Jazz, Modern and Musical Theater with Gus Giordano. At the age of 18, she auditioned for the legendary José Greco and given the opportunity to learn and perform with his world famous Spanish Dance Company. Her beloved journey into the Spanish dance world also led her to the company of Lola Montes. Dame Libby’s career also includes musical theater, opera, television, film and orchestra, including guest performances with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. With the Ensemble Espanol she has performed with the Detroit Symphony, the Evanston and Skokie Valley Symphonies, and repeated performances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She has studied in Spain and the United States with Elisa Stigler, Gus Giordano, Maria Alba, Nana Lorca, Lola Montes, José Greco, Edo, Manolo Vargas, Paul Haakon, María Magdalena, Pedro Azorin, Ciro, Pacita Tomas, and Roberto Lorca, with whom she partnered for several years. In 1976 she created and founded the Ensemble Español, the premier Spanish Dance Center and Company in the United States to have “In Residence” status at a university, Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. She has choreographed the majority of the company’s extensive 135 plus choreographic roster and has produced their major international Flamenco ballets and dramas, folkloric suites and classic modern interpretations with guest artists from Spain and the Americas.
