N O T E F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R Queridos Amigos/Dear Friends. Bienvenidos y Gracias. Welcome and thank you for joining us for this 38th anniversary American Spanish Dance and Music Festival Concerts. Our company of 40 dancers, musicians and international guest artists are dedicated to enriching your evening, sharing your passions and embracing all that is Spain in America. As I reflect back to my first experiences traveling throughout Spain, I remember the new and unique feelings of the essence of this dynamic, colorful and romantic land which imbued my being. In the early 1970’s, while attending a Flamenco festival of singers, guitarists and dancers, I first saw a young Paco de Lucía. There he was at the end of the chairs of guitarists, wearing a suit and looking as if he had been born with the guitar in his arms. He had toured with José Greco in the 1960’s before I became involved with the Greco Company. The recordings and reputation of de Lucía were familiar to me. As he began to include his heartfelt work, involving American jazz and fusing it with classical music, his exceptional talent and style became known worldwide. As one of the greatest and most innovative guitarists of our time, his untimely death (February 25, 2014) saddened us all. I am honored to dedicate our festival to the memory of Paco de Lucía. As ever, my eternal heartfelt gratitude to Irma Suárez Ruiz and Jorge Perez, for your truly selfless devotion to the legacy of our beloved Ensemble Español and Northeastern Illinois University. Gracias to our magnificent, Giuseppa DiCesare, Manager of Operations and Festival Coordinator, and to our tireless devoted staff, Carolyn Aguila, Development Director, Julia Hinojosa, Arts Education Coordinator, Jose Torres, Dance Administrator, and Brigid Gardner and Erica Sauder, Administrative Assistants. I am so proud of all of the dancers for your extraordinary accomplishments, once again, this season. Felicidades to this year’s Ensemble Español Ambassador Recipients Crystal Ruiz and Monica Saucedo. Special thank you to former Ensemble Español dancer, and Mil Clavos ballet choregrapher, Ron De Jesús, who began his formal dance training here in the late 1970’s. Mil Gracias to our University President, Dr. Sharon Hahs, Provost, Dr. Richard Helldobler, Dean of Arts & Sciences, Wamucii Njogu, Chairman of the Department of Music and Dance Program, Dr. Shayne Cofer and Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU), where the Ensemble Español has been In Residence since its inception 38 years ago. Special gracias to dear friends (NEIU) President Emerita, Dr. Salme Harju Steinberg, Senator Iris Martinez, Dr. Bernard Brommel, Eugene Jarvis and Sasha Gerritson, and Leah and Daniel Komaiko. We gratefully acknowledge the foundations, businesses, and individuals who have so generously contributed to our beloved Ensemble Español. And for your contributions to our Heritage Circle and beyond, gracias to artists Antonette Lorvig and Anita Salazar, Myra Werner, Donor, Cheryl Burack and to the parents of the company and youth company. And finally, welcome y muchas gracias to our glorious guest artists for sharing your arte and inspiring us with your performances, creations, rehearsals and master classes: Carmela Greco, Manuel Reyes, Pol Vaquero, Gala Vivancos, Paco Fonta, David Chiriboga, Javier Saume Mazzei, Patricia “La Tiranta”, Sasha Gerritson, Kay Kim, Lyon Leifer, Sylvia Myintoo, and Brian Torosian. And now, travel with us to España ¡Ole! Enjoy this concert. ¡Que lo disfruten! Con cariño, 2
