F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R ... J E N N I F E R U P H O F F G R A Y Welcome to Forward Theater Company’s production of Red – a play that excites us on many levels. Not only is this a play about the nature of art and its ability to evoke emotion, it also serves as a reminder of the essential role of skilled artistry in the theater. FTC has been fortunate to employ many gifted designers and technicians over the years. This production provides a wonderful opportunity to single out the work these artists do. Building a production is a team effort – a lighting designer manipulates light to create atmosphere, a costume designer supports the characters and historic era of the play, but an electrician hangs the lights above the stage with precision, the wardrobe crew maintains the costumes each night with care – it’s a collaborative process that requires weeks to prepare and execute. I urge you to read the design and production staff listings in this program and take note of their names -- they live in our community and create such brilliant art, particularly in this play about art. Their contributions have breathed a wonderful vibrancy into this production of Red, and I’m certain you will appreciate the fruits of their labor.

It’s a prime number…. and I really like the concept of PRIME. One definition of that word is, “of the best possible quality; excellent.” We feel that our productions since day one have been worthy of that designation, and this season will certainly be no exception! It seems like just yesterday we were wondering if the Madison community would embrace a new, fledgling professional theater company. Now here we are; celebrating our fifth season. And the jury is IN. You have embraced us with open arms. Our success is no accident. You have come to expect high quality theater when you take your seat in the Playhouse. We try mightily to fulfill that expectation. We have taken a steady and deliberate approach to our growth; and every season has been developed and crafted without biting off more than we can chew financially. But what I am most proud of is our growing reputation as a company that is open, is welcoming and is one that values this community. When I talk to people about Forward Theater Company, the conversation starts with mention of the wonderful plays they’ve seen; but it quickly moves from that to something like, “Everyone is so friendly at Forward Theater, it feels like family.” Or “I love how Forward connects with other organizations in the community.” In fact, our strong sense of connection and community is a fundamental value of this company. It defines who we are and how we measure our success. We are humbled by your support, and we owe you a debt of gratitude. We will continue to pay that debt by providing a theater experience of the highest caliber, and by strengthening our connections to the community and to you, our valued audience members. Your support and participation are important to everyone at FTC. The Members of the advisory company are pleased to present this season’s slate of plays. They are funny, moving and thought-provoking. It’s hard to believe that this is FTC’s fifth season. As the old saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” Believe me, the past five years have been FUN. Over five years, FTC has grown from a fledgling theater formed by a group of professionals with a common goal into a well-respected theater with a proven track record of offering exceptional productions. FTC is very proud of this. We are also very proud of honoring our commitment of always putting the audience - our customers - first. Because the fun wouldn’t be complete without YOUR participation – the audience that has given so much back to FTC. There have been plenty of milestones during our five-year voyage. I don’t think anyone involved with FTC’s inaugural venture All About Eve will ever forget the astonishing ovation from the audience when the actors first came on stage. Or the joy we all felt when we learned we had gotten the rights to produce Christopher Durang’ s Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them as our first full production. Since then there have been many other memorable highlights – a world premiere, Midwest and Wisconsin premieres, partnerships with the UW Theatre Department and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, staged readings by Madison playwrights and monologue festivals that have brought many local and national artists into the FTC family. The recommended gift for a fifth anniversary is wood. Appropriately, bridges can be made of wood. Over the past five years FTC has built valuable bridges with the members of our audience that have gotten stronger each year. Here’s to many more years of bridge building. K I M B E R LY YA R N A L L & K A R E N M O E L L E R Mark Rothko was born Marcus Rothkowitz in 1903 in Russia to a Jewish family that emigrated to the United States when Rothko was ten years old. Raised in Portland, Oregon, he began his artistic career in New York in 1923 after two years at Yale University. His work passed through several phases, but by the late 1940s, he had found what would be his final stylistic manner: fully abstract paintings featuring rectangles of various sizes and colors, arranged to induce meditative or spiritual states of mind rather than depict objects from the natural world. This is the artistic phase where we meet Rothko in Red. This abstract, emotionally intense style put Rothko in accord with the New York School artists, who came to prominence in the years following the Second World War. This was a small group of loosely affiliated artists who created a stylistically diverse body of work that introduced radical new directions in art. The artists known as “Abstract Expressionists” or “New York School” included Jackson Pollock, with his abstract, splatter and drip paintings; Barnett Newman, who specialized in areas of color separated by thin vertical lines, or “zips;” Willem De Kooning and his complex figurative paintings; and, of course, Rothko himself. These artists valued spontaneity and improvisation in their process, tempered with the meticulous planning necessitated by the immense scale of many of their works. Rothko’s studio, as depicted in Red, is a place where painstaking preparation lays the groundwork for the flash of inspiration. Hours, even days might pass before brush is laid to canvas, and the workmanlike efforts of Rothko and Ken, his fictional assistant in Red, set the stage for what is, ultimately, an unpredictable process. Like Rothko, many of the Abstract Expressionists began and developed their artistic careers during the 1930s. They wanted to free themselves of the provincialism and politics that defined the art world of the previous decades. The crisis of war and its aftermath is key to understanding the concerns of the Abstract Expressionists. Troubled by man’s dark side and aware of human irrationality and vulnerability, they broke away from accepted conventions in both technique and subject matter. As you’ll see during the performance, they often created monumentally scaled works that stood as reflections of their individual psyches. Playwright John Logan brings us into Rothko’s work in the late 1950’s. This time marked a transitional period in American art, when the dominance of the abstract painters of the New York School, like Rothko, was about to give way to a new generation of artists associated with the movement known as “Pop-Art.” This succeeding generation approached art from a vastly different perspective. Many of the young artists of the late 50s and early 60s remembered World War II as an event of childhood or adolescence, and knew the Depression only as a historical period described by older generations. Artists like Warhol, of Campbell Soup Can fame; Jasper Johns with his flags and maps; neo-Dadaist Robert Rauschenberg; and Roy Lichtenstein with his comic book art, lived in post-war America and experienced a world at (relative) peace. The defining features of their childhood and coming-of-age were abundant consumer goods, pop culture, and ample leisure time in which to exploit those riches. As you watch Red, we encourage you to consider this period of transition between generations and artistic movements – and see how it shapes your understanding of the man Rothko, his relationship with his assistant, and the impact on his work and process.

ARTIST BIOGR APHIES Nate Burger (Ken) makes his Forward Theater and Madison area debut. In Wisconsin, he has appeared regularly at American Players over the last few years, where favorite credits include Richard III, The Critic, Taming of the Shrew, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and as Troilus in Troilus & Cressida. In Chicago, selected credits include: The Liar, Do The Hustle (Writers’ Theatre); Wasteland, ‘Master Harold’…and the Boys (Timeline Theatre); A Christmas Carol (Goodman Theatre); and The Man Who Was Thursday (New Leaf Theatre). Jim DeVita (Rothko), a native of Long Island, NY, is very happy to be working with Forward Theater for the first time. Jim is an author and actor. Along with his novels, The Silenced and Blue, published by HarperCollins, he is also a widely published playwright, writing for both adults and young audiences. AWARDS: The Distinguished Play Award, AATE; The Intellectual Freedom Award, and the Kentucky Council of English/Language Arts. The American Alliance of Theater and Education honored his body of work with the Charlotte Chorpenning Award. EDUCATION: Jim worked five years as a first mate on the fishing boat JIB VII, out of Great South Bay, NY, studied theater at Suffolk County College and UW-Milwaukee, and attended MATC to become a licensed EMT. Jim is a member of The Dramatists Guild, Actor’s Equity Association, and is also a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship for Fiction.

TECHNICAL ARTIST BIOGR APHIES Olivia Bedard (Assistant Stage Manager) is ecstatic to be working on her first show with Forward Theater Company. A recent graduate from Northern Arizona University with a degree in Theatre Design and Technology, she hasn’t wasted any time getting into the theatre scene. For the past three summers she has been the Stage Management Intern at American Players Theatre. She is very excited to be working as a professional assistant stage manager, with Red being her first show. She would like to thank her mentor Evelyn, her companion here at Forward Kim Patch, and of course her family, for without them she wouldn’t be here today. Joe Cerqua (Sound Design) is a freelance composer, producer, vocalist and sound designer. He is thrilled to be working with Forward Theater again where he has previously composed and designed sound for Sons of the Prophet, Good People, 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, Love Stories, In the Next Room, Going to St. Ives, Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them, and The Farnsworth Invention. He has composed music and/or designed sound for over 200 productions in Chicago, nationally, and internationally. Joe is the Producing Director/Composer in residence for the Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre, a critically acclaimed 13-piece jazz orchestra and 10-member dance company. He is the Director of Production for the Music Department at Columbia College Chicago. Future projects include concerts with Cerqua Rivera, original music and sound designs for American Buffalo and The Sea Gull at American Players Theatre, Our Class at Remy Bumppo, and Or, at Forward Theater.

(Milwaukee Rep); Love’s Labour’s Lost, The Winter’s Tale (Utah Shakespeare Festival); In the Next Room or the vibrator play (Actors Theater of Louisville); Skin Tight, Memory House (Renaissance Theaterworks); Well (Milwaukee Chamber Theater); Richard III (Notre Dame Shakespeare). An Associate Artist with the Milwaukee Rep, her acting credits include The Diary of Anne Frank, Death of a Salesman, The Lady with All the Answers, Pride and Prejudice, Enchanted April, The Crucible, Doubt, The Clean House, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Mary Stuart, Endgame and Copenhagen. She received a Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship in 2010.
John Logan (Playwright) received the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critic Circle and Drama League awards for his play Red. The play premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in London and at the Golden Theatre on Jason Fassl (Lighting Designer, USAA & Broadway. He is the author of more than IATSE) is thrilled to return to the Forward a dozen other plays including Never the Theater Company for his fourth production, Sinner and Hauptmann. His adaptation of having designed Good People last season, Ibsen’s The Master Builder premiered on and collaborating on Going To St. Ives and A the West End in 2003. As a screenwriter, Thousand Words. For over the last decade, Logan had three movies released in 2011: Jason has designed lighting for more than Hugo, Coriolanus and Rango. Previous film 300 theatrical productions across this great work includes Sweeney Todd (Golden Globe state of cheese. He is an artistic associate award); The Aviator (Oscar, Golden Globe, Red

Kimberly Patch (Stage Manager) received her BFA in Stage Management from the University of Southern California. This is her tenth production with Forward Theater Company, fourth as Stage Manager. She recently completed her fourth season at American Players Theatre as an Assistant Stage Manager. Kim became a proud AEA member in January 2013.
Jennifer Uphoff Gray (Director/FTC Artistic Director) directed Forward Theater’s productions of Sons of the Prophet, Good People, 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, A Thousand Words, The Farnsworth Invention, Moonlight and Magnolias, In the Next Room or the vibrator play, All About Eve, and Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them. Before helping to found Forward Theater, she directed Love’s Labour’s Lost for Milwaukee Shakespeare (“Best of 2008”) and The Diary of Anne Frank for Madison Repertory Theatre (“Best of 2008”). Other credits include; the national tour of Copenhagen, associate director of Copenhagen, Cabaret, The Blue Room (starring Nicole Kidman) and The Life on Broadway. Off-Broadway, she directed the world premiere of the musical Suburb. Jen grew up in the Madison area and is now raising her family on the near west side. Love to Peter, Jamie, Seeger and Arden!
Charles J. Trieloff II (Set & Properties Designer) received his MFA in set design from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. For Forward Theater, Charles previously designed sets for 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, The Farnsworth Invention, Going to St. Ives, as well as props for every Forward Theater production. For University Theatre he has designed Antigone, The Passion of Dracula, A Little Night Music, Man of La Mancha, The Water Station, Smash, Steel Magnolias, True West, and Stop Kiss. For Children’s Theater of Madison he designed the productions of Little Women, Narnia, Goodnight Moon, and A Wonderful Life. Charles is also the designer for Madison Opera’s Opera in the Park events. As a visiting artist at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, he designed A Lie of the Mind, Hay Fever, Guys and Dolls, and Antigone. In Madison he was the prop master at Madison Repertory Theatre for nine years, and is currently the prop master at American Players Theatre. He has also designed props for Forward Theater, CTM, Madison Ballet, and Madison Opera. Outside of the theater world Charles designed the themed reception areas for the Old Sauk location of Children’s Dental Health. Kevin Zimmer (Technical Director) has worked with Forward Theater since the 2009-2010 season, first as master carpenter and as Technical Director for the past two years. In addition he worked as a Master Carpenter for Madison Rep, Master 18
