Family history. (Family. History.) Lewiston explores our relationship to both elements of that idea better than any piece of writing I’ve ever encountered. In the relationships between Alice and Marnie, and Alice and Connor, we see these characters struggling with the ties that bind them together. What do we owe to our families – both those still with us and those who came before? That one of these pairs is related by blood and the other is family by choice also deserves exploration: which ties are stronger and more deserving of loyalty? Lewiston’s characters are trying to find their place in the story of America’s history. Alice and Marnie are directly related to a towering figure in our national mythology of Westward Expansion. How does this inheritance rest on their shoulders? When does a legacy become a burden? And as Americans grapple with the dishonesty of much of our learned history, Lewiston wonders how new awareness might undermine a family’s pride in their forebears. Alice and Marnie are also descended from settlers. Now that generations have gone by, Alice and Marnie – and Connor – must decide for themselves whether remaining attached to this particular piece of land provides them with the security they crave, or keeps them stuck. Most of us have been spending a lot of time at home this past year, while the world around us has changed in countless ways. What a gift as we begin to emerge into this new-to-us world that we have Samuel D. Hunter’s moving story to accompany us. Jen Uphoff Gray We have a complicated relationship to the word ‘Pioneer.’ Much of the foundation of our understanding of our own American mythology is under reassessment today and the ‘American Frontier’ is no exception. In our expansion westward, what unspoken atrocities lived in conjunction with our glory? What compromises did our heroes make in order to make names for themselves? The more we are able to take a closer look at these people, the more complex our feelings about our foundation become. And yet, despite our expanding ideas on the matter, there’s still something about Exploration that tickles our psyches as Americans. Exploration, I’d argue, is a critical part of who we are. We sailed west, then we walked west, then we looked toward the stars. But after every patch of our world’s been staked, what’s left to explore? Who are we then? I’d argue there’s plenty left to explore. But not in the way you’d think. When I look at each of the characters in Clarkston, I see pioneers, all. Jake, Trisha, and Chris are all at a tipping point in their lives, each about to take those first few steps into an uncharted frontier. But though their endeavor is not about land, their path forward is no less terrifyingly unknown. Because the unknown is only ever terrifying. And I believe that that’s what Clarkston is about — despite our paralyzing fear, stepping toward the unknown. And if we’re lucky, as our limbs shake, perhaps we’re lucky enough to have a friend, who can reach out, steady our hand, and walk with us, together. Jake Penner 8

A C L O S E R L O O K … A DV I S O R Y C O M PA N Y M E M B E R M I K E F I S C H E R An Undiscovered Country “Only connect!” The epigraph to E.M. Forster’s best novel is playwright Samuel D. Hunter’s guiding mantra, as the misfits populating his plays try to escape the prison house of the self. Whether in the Idaho where he was born and sets nearly all of his plays or in his adopted home of New York, Hunter admits that he himself feels “a sense of isolation . . . and I think the plays are kind of about that. I don’t think a lot of the characters I write feel at home in any way.” But at the same time, Hunter’s lonely hearts long for something better. “I actually have a really unshakeable faith in the value of community and human connection,” Hunter has said. “I think that’s where the plays are coming from.” As you are about to see, Lewiston/Clarkston – the two one-acts that Hunter refers to as “a play in two parts” – is no exception. Along with his Greater Clements – which concluded its run at Lincoln Center shortly before the pandemic closed New York – Lewiston/Clarkston goes further than any other Hunter play in exploring the foundational American myths through which we tell ourselves that we are in fact connected, as a single people with a shared story. It’s no accident that parts of both Lewiston and Clarkston take place on July 4. Or that these plays feature descendants of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Can these old stories of undaunted courage and rugged individualism offer Hunter’s characters a way forward? And can myths of American exceptionalism offer us a way forward, allowing us to escape the crushing isolation of this pandemic by making America great again? Can we turn to the past to find our future? Or should we pull the statues down and start over? Fizzling Fireworks in Big Box America An Olive Garden restaurant. A Hobby Lobby store. Interstate truck stops. The Costco where we spend time in Clarkston: The Idaho we see in Hunter’s plays is indistinguishable from most anywhere else in Middle America. As the surrounding mountains continually remind Hunter’s characters, we’ve paved paradise and put up a parking lot. Or, in Lewiston, a condo complex, much of it built on a family ranch Alice has already sold when we first meet her, tending a roadside fireworks stand to make ends meet while wondering whether to sell the developers what little land she still owns. Acutely aware of her history and loving the land, Alice nevertheless feels the burden of the past as she considers letting it go. Much like the tame, safety-first fireworks she sells, that past has lost its onetime sparkle; the rockets and bombs bursting in midair no longer give proof of much. But she still sends them up, as distressed flares expressing her longing for what’s lost. The big-box Costco in which Jake and Chris work the nightshift in Clarkston is much like those fireworks: a debased version of the American dream, in which a culture of consumption involving big tins of popcorn that we mindlessly eat before digital TVs replaces pastoral images of a land of plenty. “All these stores like Costco in towns like this, hundreds of miles in between one another – maybe this is like the new West,” Jake says to Chris at one point. “Maybe we’re like the last American pioneers.” Is it any wonder that Jake is as obsessed with distant relative Clark as Alice’s daughter once was with distant relative Lewis? Or that Jake has landed in Clarkston because he’s tracing his ancestor’s journey west, much as Alice’s daughter once literally retraced Lewis’ footsteps by walking the entire Lewis and Clark trail? “All America lies at the end of the wilderness road,” wrote T.K. Whipple nearly 80 years ago, in Study Out the Land (1943). “Our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us . . . What [our ancestors] lived, we dream.” Maybe so. But what if that dream is a dead end? A related question: What if the reason we’ve reached this particular end of the trail is because that dream was always misconceived? Our Founding Fathers weren’t just self-proclaimed sons of liberty. They also owned human beings and defended slavery. Lewis and Clark weren’t just explorers. They were also advance scouts for an imperial enterprise culminating in genocide. “I just like the idea of them more than what they actually were, I guess,” Jake says of Lewis and Clark. In an interview about Greater Clements, Hunter identified such thinking as “the toxicity of nostalgia,” through which “we desperately try to relive things without admitting what they really were.” Telling Stories Even as Hunter acknowledges the powerful undertow of these old stories, Lewiston/ Clarkston gently suggests that we swim against the current. You’ll repeatedly see this dynamic at work within Lewiston/Clarkston, as characters wrestle with the histories they’ve – we’ve – inherited. But even though we can’t yet gather as an audience in the Playhouse, you’ll also experience this dynamic yourself by watching the plays and (hopefully) participating in a talkback, thereby practicing what Hunter preaches, in countless interviews: theater embodies the sense of community we need. It offers catharsis for the pain we feel. And it allows us, together, to tell new stories about who we are and might yet be, individually and as a country. “You’re not just sitting in the dark for 90 minutes in this receptive mood,” Hunter said, before the New York opening of Lewiston/Clarkston. Instead, you’re embarking on a much longer expedition with fellow audience members, moving north-by-northwest toward the end of the land, at “a moment in American history where we’re all treading very lightly on very thin ice,” he continued. “I think that can be very helpful.” Lewiston/Clarkston won’t draw a map detailing the way forward; providing facile answers isn’t Hunter’s way. But Lewiston/Clarkston might help us pose the questions we need to ask ourselves and each other, as we embark on our own collective journey of discovery toward the nation we might yet become. “We live in the civilization they created,” Whipple writes, of the relation between Americans past and those of us living out the legacy of their conquest. “But within us the wilderness still lingers.” 10

Even in a Big Box America of fast food and faster lies, we can still take a walk on the wild side and light out for something unspoiled, as pioneers working together to forge genuine connections and create a new world involving a shared history. F R O M T H E B OA R D O F D I R E C TO R S ... S T E V E S U L E S K I Creating a home base for Wisconsin theater professionals….” These are the first eight words of Forward Theater’s mission statement. They represent one of our most fundamental commitments which you, our audience and donors, have so generously supported since Forward’s founding over eleven years ago. Now, as the pandemic rages and decimates theater companies across the country, we continue to do all that we can do to sustain Wisconsin theater professionals, to maintain their “home base.” We are doing this: - By honoring all of our contracts with them for the 2020-21 Season, no matter what this Season ends up looking like, what form it will take. This provides them with a paycheck, credit for health coverage and other resources for basic survival. - By providing artistic work for them in all sorts of new and innovative ways. This allows them to practice their craft, and derive satisfaction and purpose from doing the work they’ve been called to do. - By reassuring them that they have a home in Forward when so many other parts of their support structure may be crumbling. This gives them the confidence that they can count on us no matter what as they attempt to maintain their careers in theater. You, our loyal subscribers, single ticket buyers, and donors, have risen to a new level in your support of Forward as we stay true to our mission in these troubled times. You have subscribed for season tickets and purchased single tickets in numbers that blew away our expectations when live performances and theater gatherings are probably not going to happen for a while. You have opened your hearts and your minds to new ways of experiencing theater as we experiment with Zoom-like formats, filmed productions, creative readings and other innovations that were beyond our imagination before the start of the pandemic. And you haven’t skipped a beat in the level of your financial support as you’ve increased your donations since the beginning of the crisis. We enthusiastically welcome you to the third production in our 2020-21 Season, a season unlike any other. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your relentless support in helping us, no, enabling us, to continue to provide a “home base” for Wisconsin theater professionals — a “home base” in the truest sense of what having a home means. Are you buzzing with excitement? Are you bubbling over with hope? Are you overcome with joy and ready to shout it from the rooftops like we are? Why, you ask? Because we’re back! Well, we’re getting back. Slowly, but surely. And between you and us, we couldn’t be happier! Just over one year ago, Forward’s upcoming production of The Amateurs closed down just days before opening night. At that point, we had no idea what would come next. Weeks and months went by while The Playhouse remained dark, longing for the return of voices, artists, and energy. Forward Theater went to work creating new, digital content, paying every single artist already contracted in full, and expanding far beyond what we ever thought theater could be. And now, here we are! With this production of Lewiston/Clarkston, we bring you one step closer to The Playhouse again. There are a few ‘firsts’ that Forward will be sharing with all of you on this production: our first time back in Overture Center since last March, our first two-play evening, and our first live staged performance filmed and presented digitally for our subscribers and audiences. We hope this unique production brings back some of those butterflies and goosebumps that we all feel as those house lights dim, and we’ll continue to make safety, health, and equity our top priorities as we work towards seeing each other in the Playhouse lobby again very soon. Until then, enjoy the show and thank you for your continued trust and support!

G O I N G F O R WA R D – A C O N V E R S AT I O N We invite you to consider the topics below and discuss them with your fellow audience members, whether they’re on Zoom, in person (socially distanced, of course), or with other members of your household. We also hope you will join the cast at the scheduled live talkbacks, where audience and artists will gather on Zoom to discuss these and any other issues brought to light by our production. And please keep the conversation going by sharing your thoughts on our Facebook or Instagram pages. Let’s start the conversation: • Even before COVID, more Americans have been moving away from their home towns, sometimes abandoning a home base altogether in favor of nomadic “van life.” Now that COVID has made working remotely more accepted, this trend has increased. Do you think this reflects an impulse to explore, or a more personal need to escape? Which applies to the characters in these two plays? And if you’ve ever made a big move or are contemplating one, which applies to you? • The Lewis and Clark expedition helped to form the continental United States as we know it. Two hundred years later, as we’ve learned more about the expedition’s effect on indigenous populations and the land that was “discovered,” and about Lewis and Clark themselves, the legacy of that exploration has become more complicated. Why do you think the playwright, Samuel Hunter, chose to reference Lewis and Clark so explicitly in these two plays? What do these plays say about the mythologies that we, and in particular, Americans, invest in? To learn even more about the play, playwright, and Forward Theater’s production, please consider watching our pre-show talk, which is available to view from our virtual lobby. L A N D AC K N OW L E D G E M E N T Acknowledging Ho-Chunk Nation’s ancestral lands, Forward Theater and Overture Center for the Arts celebrate the rich traditions, heritage, and culture that thrived long before our arrival. Overture respectfully recognizes this Ho-Chunk land and affirms that we are better when we stand together. A S P E C I A L T H A N K YO U We were so very fortunate to return to in-person rehearsals for Lewiston/Clarkston. But this process would not be possible without the daily commitment of Company Manager Celia Klehr, who took on the role of COVID Compliance Officer. Her dedication to learning and enforcing the required safety protocols and testing schedule was crucial to our success. Thank you, Celia!
