FUNDRAISING

CEDARBURG Written by Barb Joosse, Illustrated by Renee Graef

$17.95, available online at cedarburgculturalcenter.org, at the Cultural Center, and select locations around town. Come on! A little elephant takes you to his favorite place--Cedarburg! Join him as he “rides around the block, to see who’s who, to see what’s what,” catches fireflies (“Twinkleflies on. Twinkleflies off. Stars in a jar is what we’ve got.”) and explores the creepy cemetery (“Oldy moldy graves up here. Oldy moldy bones down there. But no ghosts--nope!”) Rollicking rhymes, familiar scenes and a reassuring ending make this a story to keep--and share. Sponsored by the Greater Cedarburg Foundation, all proceeds from book sales will go towards the new endowment of the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

HARMONIOUS WAIL

“The bouncy rhythm, the delicate music arrangement and good musicianship have made Harmonious Wail one of the few outstanding bands that combines Eastern European folk songs and American jazz music.” —TaipeiTimes.com

PERFORMANCE

Saturday, December 21 at 7:30pm

Drawing from the rich influence of European gypsy musicians, the Wail bursts through the normal boundaries of the gypsy swing genre with intoxicating vocals, enticing arrangements and sheer joy. Smoldering vocals are laced in with the jazzy mandolin and guitar; an infectious blend of continental jazz, swing, and gypsy music. Harmonious Wail has won multiple Madison Area Music Association (MAMA) awards including Best Jazz CD, Best Ensemble Vocalists of the Year, Best World Artist, Best World Song, Best Instrumentalist, and Favorite Jazz Band. www.wail.com Sims Delaney-Potthoff, Harmonious Wail’s founder (1987), leader and mandolinist, sings, writes and arranges for the Wail, and also plays a 1937 Gibson tenor guitar (tuned as an octave mandolin). Maggie Delaney-Potthoff is a captivating vocal performer. Equally at home scatting over a bebop tune, soaring on a solo, or blending with the Wail’s tight vocal harmonies, she delivers both powerhouse tunes and ballads with confidence and ease. Jeff Weiss, recent graduate of UW-Madison’s School of Music, is already a master bassist with dazzling artistic prowess. Recipient of the 2012 Madison Area Music Award for Best Bassist of the Year. $11 member advance | $14 advance | $16 day of show | $6 student with ID | $145 reserved table of eight

INFORMATION

In Memorium

The Cedarburg Cultural Center said good-bye this summer to three of its beloved supporters. The passing of Ed Rappold, 93, and Merlin Rostad, 101, left us with emptiness in our hearts but fond memories of a passion for our mission. Ed gifted us with a wealth of valuable area information, photos and videos. Merlin leaves behind a legacy of support and creativity that inspires us all. Jane Mercier Beck, 68, passed away in July. Jane’s passion for children’s education continues on at the Cultural Center through a donation to our art education and historic school tours.
