After graduating from Rutgers University in 1951, he went on to publish over 70 short stories in such magazines as Playboy, Redbook, Cosmopolitan, and The Saturday Evening Post. He also taught literature at Florida State University. Shaara’s first novel, The Broken Place, was published in 1968 to critical acclaim, but no commercial success. After a memorable visit to the battlefield at Gettysburg, he began working on The Killer Angels, which he completed seven years later, and finally published (after being rejected by 15 publishers) in 1974. Following its initial publication, the novel was a commercial flop, and received mixed reviews. It thus came as a surprise to everyone—Shaara included—when it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year. It was not until the release of a screen adaptation, Gettysburg, in 1993—five years after Shaara’s death (from a heart attack, at age 60) and 19 years after the book’s first publication—that his novel hit #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list. Shaara’s two children, Jeffrey and Lila, are both accomplished novelists. Jeffrey Shaara’s most notable works include a prequel (Gods and Generals) and sequel (The Last Full Measure) to his father’s The Killer Angels.
