A F E W WO R D S F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R Welcome back to Nichols Concert Hall! After last season’s operetta extravaganza, we decided this year to explore the music of one of America’s greatest composers, George Gershwin. So many wonderful songs, but so many of them from shows that would be difficult to revive today. The musical has come a long way since the 1920s, and modern audiences wouldn’t put up with the creaky books and lame comedy that was part of the deal on Gershwin’s Broadway. But all those great songs…! We thought a concert performance would be a perfect way to sample the breadth and variety of Gershwin’s achievement. And who could be more perfect for the job of putting it all together than our old friend, George Andrew Wolff? Every time George has graced our stage, in shows ranging from DIE FLEDERMAUS to SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, I’ve always been struck by his knack for finding the exactly right style for putting a song across. I knew this insight and talent could be invaluable in bringing to life an evening of treasures from the Great American Songbook, both in choosing the material and mentoring our singers. I’m happy to say he was as enthusiastic about the idea as I was. Our enthusiasm only grew when one of Chicago’s top music directors, Valerie Maze, came on board to set things swinging! Add to that a returning trio of Light Opera Works stars (Colette Todd, David Schlumpf and Sarah Lynn Kelley), along with two extremely talented newcomers (Sophie Grimm and Martin L. Woods)…not to mention Phil Martin on bass and Bill Harrison on drums…and we felt we had a crew that could really do justice to the incredible legacy of George Gershwin, whose work remains at the center of American music nearly one hundred years after he published his first song. And now…strike up the band!
