A NOTE ABOUT THE PL AY Little Red Ridinghood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Cinderella; these names are the very stuff of childhood. But as Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm knew well, these characters dwell in perilous woods full of witches, wolves, and giants. In imagining Into the Woods, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine found parallels among these beloved storylines and tied them together with the tale of the baker and his wife on a quest to start a family. The original 1987 Broadway production of INTO THE WOODS, which featured Bernadette Peters as the Witch, won a host of Tony awards, including Best Original Score, Best Book, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress (for Joanna Gleeson in the role of the baker’s wife), and there have been many successful revivals since. The inspiration for our production concept this season came from observation. As a cast and production team, we looked at the process communities go through when they are forced to work with others. Each family depicted in our production comes from a different fairytale. These differences are visually demarcated as we aesthetically modeled each group from different illustrations and perceptions of what these timeless characters look like. Over the course of the play, everyone must work together to fulfill their individual wishes. While they begin the play separated, they form a new family by the conclusion. A B O U T T H E C R E ATO R S James Lapine (Author/Director) was born in Mansfield, OH in 1949. After graduating from Franklin and Marshall College in 1971 and studying photography and graphic design at the California Institute of the Arts, Lapine taught design at the Yale School of Drama, where he began writing and directing plays. He was introduced to Stephen Sondheim (Composer) in the early ‘80s when he was working Off-Broadway. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Lapine and Sondheim collaborated on a number of successful productions, including INTO THE WOODS, which premiered on Broadway in 1987 and earned Lapine both the Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best Book of a Musical. He also wrote and directed SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, FALSETTOS, and THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, and has ventured into film. Born in 1930 and raised in New York City, Stephen Sondheim went on to become one of the most important voices in twentieth century musical theatre. At a young age, he became friends with Jimmy Hammerstein, son of the lyricist and playwright Oscar Hammerstein II. After an apprenticeship with Hammerstein, who instilled in him a profound love of musical theatre, Sondheim collaborated with a number of eminent authors and playwrights. Over his lengthy career, Sondheim has written music and lyrics for many seminal works, including COMPANY, FOLLIES, WEST SIDE STORY, and GYPSY. Throughout his career, Sondheim has won many awards including the Pulitzer Prize, an Academy Award for Best Song, and several Grammy, Tony, Drama Desk, and Laurence Olivier awards. This past summer, he was awarded the Chicago Tribune Literary Prize at the Chicago Humanities Festival. Loyola University Chicago 3

Brian Tochterman (Baker) is a junior theatre major from Philadelphia, PA and is beyond thrilled to be a part of this production of INTO THE WOODS. He was last seen on the mainstage in PIPPIN (Theo) and OUR COUNTRY’S GOOD (Ketch). He would like to thank Sarah for this amazing opportunity, as well as his friends and family for their continuous support.
Corinne Natyshak (Cinderella) is a sophomore theatre major from Toledo, OH. She is honored to be a member of the cast of INTO THE WOODS. In the spring, Corinne was part of Loyola’s production of MUD (Mae). She also appeared in TIME OF YOUR LIFE. Corinne would like to thank Mom, Dad, and the boys for taking a break from the hockey tournament to enjoy Sondheim. And Nick, for somehow managing to be both a charming and sincere “faraway prince”.
Angela Sandall (Baker’s Wife) is a sophomore theatre and international film & media studies double major from Plymouth, MN. She was seen on the second stage last year in DOG SEES GOD (Tricia) and is excited and humbled to be a part of her first mainstage production at Loyola. Many thanks to the amazingly talented production team, her parents, Nick, David, Danny, and the rest of her family for their love and support.
R.J. Silva (Jack) hails from Phoenix, AZ. His is fulfilling one of his dream roles as Jack in Loyola’s production of the Sondheim fairy tale fantasy. After performing on the Mullady stage in TIME OF YOUR LIFE (the Arab) and PIPPIN (a player), he devotes this performance to his friends, who would never sell him for a sack of beans and his family for whom he would slay any giant, any day. Ann Hagner (Jack’s Mother) is a freshman at Loyola and is thrilled and humbled to be making her mainstage debut. Some of her favorite stage credits include HAIRSPRAY (Velma Von Tussle), in Mary Zimmerman’s METAMORPHOSES (Alcyone), and in LARK 2.0, an adaptation of THE LARK (Warrior Joan) for the Cherub Program at Northwestern University. She sends love and thanks to all of the creative geniuses who put this production together, and as always, to her family for their unending support.

Miranda Taiber (Cinderella’s Stepmother) is a junior theatre major from Des Moines, IA. She is absolutely tickled to be making her mainstage debut in INTO THE WOODS. She is honored to be a part of such a talented cast and crew. She would like to thank her family and friends for all of their love and support as well as Sarah and Michael for this incredible opportunity. Mary Franke (Florinda) is a senior theatre major with a minor in musical theatre. She is thrilled to be playing the role of Florinda. This past summer Mary studied classical acting at the British American Drama Academy. Mary would like to thank Sarah for this wonderful opportunity and all her guidance along the way; Michael for his amazing ability of teaching Sondheim’s music; Kelli for her vocal training and dedication; David for his friendship and support; and the entire cast and crew for making this a memorable journey. She was last seen at Arena Dinner Theatre in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and worked as Assistant Director at Blackhawk Middle School with Christopher J. Murphy. She would like to thank him, her family, friends, and second floor Regis for all of their love and support. Nick Hess (Cinderella’s Father) is a junior theatre major from the glorious city of Kalamazoo, MI. This is his third appearance on the mainstage and his first Loyola musical. He would like to thank all of the people who have helped him get here, especially his family, friends, and all his acting and voice teachers. Valerie Kilmer (Little Red Ridinghood) is originally from New York, NY. She is thrilled to be in her first Loyola production! Recent shows include Dover Players Community Theater’s TWO PAILS OF WATER (Simplina), Western Reserve Playhouse’s BE MY BABY (Gloria Nance), and Brecksville Little Theatre’s INHERIT THE WIND (Rachel Brown). Adam Noecker (Mysterious Man) is a sophomore theatre major appearing in his first mainstage production at Loyola. He is a native of South Bend, IN and has appeared in over 40 productions throughout his life. He is excited to continue his education at Loyola and plans on studying abroad in Disney World next year. Brian Shutters (Wolf/Cinderella’s Prince) is a freshman from Milwaukee, WI and is honored to be part of a mainstage production so early in college. He comes from theatre Marquette High School and Divine Savior Holy Angels High School. Recently, he performed in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (Lumiere) and in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (Piangi). Thanks to family, friends, and directors (current and past) for supporting and inspiring him. Lauren Serra (Rapunzel) is a theatre major with a concentration in dance. She is excited to be in her third musical performance at Loyola. Previous credits include PIPPIN (Catherine) and LITTLE WOMEN (Mrs. Kirk). Josh Bartlett (Rapunzel’s Prince) is a sophomore Theatre major with a minor in music. He is originally from Blair, NE and though he’s far from home, he loves every moment. This is his first performance on Loyola’s mainstage and he could not be more excited! C A S T B I O S ( c o n t .) Tom Campbell (Steward) is a senior theatre major, musical theatre minor, and dance minor at Loyola, originally from Cleveland, OH. He was recently seen in Loyola’s production of PIPPIN (in the blue sparkly shorts), LITTLE WOMEN and PIRATES OF PENZANCE, and also dancing and choreographing with The Dance Co. (Loyola’s student run dance
company) on the Mullady stage. In Cleveland, he could be seen in SWEENEY TODD, WEST SIDE STORY, and CATS at the Near West Theatre, CINDERELLA AND ME and MY GIRL at Mercury Summer Stock. He would like to thank his friends, family, teachers, mom, dad, and sister.
C O M PA N Y B I O S Sarah Gabel, Ph.D. (Director) returns to the Mullady stage to direct INTO THE WOODS for the second time. Sarah has a strong interest in American Musical Theatre and particularly the works of Stephen Sondheim, having directed nine musicals for LUC including, LITTLE WOMEN THE MUSICAL, CINDERELLA, SWEENEY TODD, ASSASSINS, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, INTO THE WOODS, WEST SIDE STORY, THREE PENNY OPERA, A CHORUS LINE, and BABY. Professional credits include direction of THIRD (Apple Tree Theatre), BLEACH (13Carat Productions), THE FANTASTICKS (Touchstone Theatre), THE INFERNAL MACHINE (The Eclipse Theatre) and CLIMBING THE VOLCANO (Piccolo Theatre). Dr. Gabel serves as the Chairperson for the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. She is actively involved in the renovation of the Mundelein Center for the Fine and Performing Arts schedule to open in the fall of 2012; this new center will be home to new instructional and performance spaces for Fine Arts, Dance, Music, and Theatre. As always, Sarah is grateful to the outstanding INTO THE WOODS production staff, crew, designers and cast for bringing this production together. Michael McBride (Music Director) is an internationally-performed composer, performer, conductor, and educator. He is a music director and performer in the Chicago Cabaret Project. A frequently seen Chicagoarea musician, he has performed all around the US, and his music has been heard on international broadcasts such as LA Talk Radio’s ON AIR WITH TONY SWEET and the BBC Radio Network. Having earned a DM in composition at Northwestern University, he works full-time as Adjunct Professor of Music at North Park University since 2006. The summer of 2010 marked the seventh year he served as the coordinator of the composition program for the National High School Music Institute at NU. McBride received his Bachelor of Music from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music in Wheaton, IL, where he double majored in composition and piano performance. He has received awards/grants from the Union League Civic and Arts Foundation and the American Music Center. Timothy Mann (Scenic Designer) is an instructor of scenic design at Loyola University Chicago. Jacqueline Firkins(Costume Designer) has designed costumes and scenery for eight years of Loyola productions. Chicago design work includes costumes for the Goodman Theatre, Writer’s Theatre, Victory Gardens Theatre, House Theatre, Timeline Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, and the Court Theatre. Ms. Firkins has also designed for Hartford Stage Company, Longwharf Theatre, Dallas Theatre Center, Portland Stage Company, Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare and Company, Dorset Theatre Festival, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Yale Repertory Theatre, New Jersey Shakespeare Festival, Brave New Repertory, About-Face Theatre Company, and the Yale School of Drama. Ms. Firkins was a recipient of the 2011 Princess Grace Award and teaches Lee Keenan (Lighting Designer) is design courses in the theatre program. an instructor of lighting at Loyola. He Mikhail Fiksel (Sound Designer) is an instructor of Sound Design at Loyola University Chicago. Ariel Horvitz (Dramaturg) is a junior, and so excited to have the opportunity to be dramaturg for INTO THE WOODS. This was her first production working from “behind the scenes” but she was previously in Loyola’s production of AS YOU LIKE IT. Sarah Espinoza (Assistant Stage Manager) is from Broomfield, CO and is thrilled to be involved in her first production at Loyola University Chicago, INTO THE WOODS. Previously working stage-managing and lighting internships in Colorado, as well as acting in several productions at her high school such as SWEET CHARITY. She would like to thank the entire production team of INTO THE WOODS and theatre department for the opportunities and experiences, making her feel welcome and a part of something great and inspiring.
Molly Mattaini (Assistant Stage Manager) hails from St. Paul, MN and Julian Gonzalez (Stage Manager) is overjoyed to be starting his junior year is tickled about working on INTO at Loyola as the stage manager for INTO THE WOODS. Previously she has worked on student projects such THE WOODS. Originally a native of Los Angeles, CA, he has held the position of as Loyola Dionysia and directing scenes. She would like to thank her Resident Stage Manager for the Long Beach Shakespeare Company for more family, particularly her dog Sam. Also, thanks to Stephen Sondheim for than three years. He has worked in being a genius and Julian for being design capacities on both EINSTEIN’S an astonishing stage manager. DREAMS and DOG SEES GOD on the second stage as well as assistant stage managing PIPPIN on Loyola’s Mainstage last year. We strive to open our students to experiences in the Chicago theatre community by bringing in professional designers, musicians, artisans, and teachers. We also encourage internships by offering credit for work done in professional theatre. If you are interested in more information about Theatre at Loyola, contact the main department office at 773.508.7510. Box Office Contact Information Phone: 773.508.3847 Email: Boxoffice@luc.edu Hours are from 12PM-5PM, Monday through Friday in Mundelein 1302, and an hour before curtain on performance days, or you can order your tickets online at LUC.tix.com Information The taking of photographs and the use of any type of recording devices are not allowed in the theatre during performances and are a violation of state and federal copyright laws. Tape or film will be confiscated. Electronic pagers and portable phones should be given to the house manager, who will notify patrons in the event that they are paged, if it is necessary that they be contacted during the performance. Patrons wearing alarm watches are respectfully requested to turn them off before entering the theatre. Patrons are asked to turn off portable phones before entering the theatre. Latecomers, along with patrons’ seat locations, are seated at the discretion of the house manager. In some circumstances, there will be no late seating until intermission. Lost and Found information may be exchanged at the Box Office; please call 773.508.3847. The Theatre reserves the right to limit admission for children under the age of six. Smoking is prohibited. Students with proper identification and senior citizens (age 62 and over) may purchase tickets at a discount. Group packages are available to groups of 10 or more. Advantages include discounted tickets, possible pre-or post-show discussions, backstage tours, blocks of tickets together, assistance with local restaurant reservations, and bus parking.
