RFORMING ARTS YOUR GUIDE TO THE PE

The Footlights staff is made of avid theatregoers, artists, actors and actresses, and members of boards and committees at local theatre companies and organizations. The collective passion the staff shares for the performing arts is overwhelming in the best possible way and fuels their hard work behind-the-scenes everyday!

Where are we headed?

The world of print is constantly changing and adapting in a world where digital and online media seems to be king. Fortunately there is still a place for niche print, especially in the world of performing arts! Footlights plans to be part of the theatre going experience for the next 25 years, and being a strong voice in the world of ever-changing media. 2014 will bring many new changes, including a new and improved website that will better serve our audiences, as well as the performing arts community here in Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Footlights will also become more accessible, by becoming more mobile and integrated in the social networking sphere. The 2014-2015 season is just around the corner, and we cannot wait to show you what Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago have in store! Thank you for the past 25 years, and here’s to 25 more! 

Meet Christa Lewandowski,

the Costume Designer for University Theatre’s Richard III The costume shop inside Vilas Communication Hall on the University of Madison campus is easily identifiable. Brightly colored fabric in every corner, sewing machines and life-sized busts scattered about, and the faint sound of the Mamma Mia soundtrack can be heard during the breaks in conversation. A young woman with pins in her mouth and hair swept up and away from her face was intently and carefully focusing on a fitting with a cast member before looking up to see who had come through the door. This costume shop is where Christa Lewandowksi, the Costume Designer for University Theatre’s Richard III, could be found that particular rainy afternoon. Originally from New Jersey, Christa had planned on being a Dance Major. However, she was required to take a costume construction class as part of her studies, and wound up falling in love with costume design. Switching majors and schools, she ultimately wound up in Madison, and is currently working as a teaching assistant at University Theatre.

Footnotes

“The director’s concept is my first jumping off point,” Christa responded when I asked her what inspires her when it comes to her designs. For this particular show, the director’s concept was to infuse the elements of traditional Kabuki with classic Shakespeare. “I was also influenced by contemporary sculptor Phillip Jackson, and his over-theatrical, over-sized sculptures that conceptualize the medieval era.”

“This piece was a lot of fun! It has all the challenges of a period show, but with so much creative freedom!” Christa went on to share that some of the biggest challenges of this particular show were pulling pieces from the existing wardrobe collection that could adapt to fit this particular world. Despite the speed bumps, Christa has enjoyed every minute of it. Thus far, Richard III is Christa’s favorite show to design for, but she has plenty of other ideas for other eras and shows she would like to design for down the road.

The Glass Menagerie would be Christa’s favorite show she hopes to someday design for. To see Christa Lewandowski’s designs, attend a performance of University Theatre’s Richard III, April 18-May 2, 2014. {footnotes} Forward Theater Wraps Up Fifth Anniversary Season With a new Communications Director on board, and one of the strongest and most supportive audiences a theatre could hope for, Forward Theater‘s 2013-2014 season has been quite the memorable one. Scott Haden shares some insights and highlights from the 2013-14 season.

In fall 2013, right before rehearsals began for Sons of the Prophet, Scott Haden was brought on board as the new Communications Director. Formerly the Managing Director at Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre, Scott is highly anticipating his first full season at Forward Theater in 2014-2015. Forward Theater’s 2013-2014 theme “Bold Strokes,” featuring bold characters making bold choices, was definitely present throughout Sons of the Prophet, Red, and Or,. Red went on to break records at the box office for best advanced ticket sales, according to The Cap Times. The 2013-2014 season ended with Or, a contemporary work by Liz Duffy Adams that focused on the Restoration Era and Aphra Behn, the first professional female playwright. The New Play Development Series returned for the Forward’s fifth season, featuring works by Wisconsin favorites Angela Iannone and James DeVita. The New Play Series takes place every two years at Forward Theater. “The New Play Series gives voice to local playwrights, and focuses solely on Wisconsin playwrights.” Scott shared when discussing the program. In Forward Theater’s New

18

Play Series, the stage readings chosen are cast with professional actors, receive a short rehearsal time of about a week, and are opened up post reading to talkbacks with the audiences, a staple at Forward. “There is a ton of audience engagement at Forward Theater. Forward offers a talk back after every performance, after every show. The Madison [theatre] audience is hungry [to be involved]!” That is the key to why Forward Theater has been a success. Priding themselves on featuring local Wisconsin talent and encouraging audiences to share their thoughts on every performance of every production, Forward’s standards for their cast, crew, and audience have lead them to the growth they have seen in the past five years. DeVita’s work Babylon will be performed May 3, 2014 while a stage reading of Iannone’s This Prison Where I Live took place March 1, and also has premiered with Titan Theatre Company in New York City.

TOMMY AWARDS TURN FIVE! The Tommy Awards mission is to be “an education initiative that recognizes, honors, and encourages excellence in musical theater productions among area high school students.” In the past five years, the Tommy Awards has created a community and program that is just that. In their first year, the Tommy Awards had 23 high schools within a 60mile radius of Madison involved. Since then, the participating schools tripled, bringing 65 schools within an expanded 85-mile radius to the beautiful Overture Center in downtown Madison. The Tommy Awards is first and foremost a program that seeks to educate and critique high school students on their craft in a positive environment, culminating in an annual awards ceremony. Students, teachers, and Overture staff look forward to the ceremony every year. “The talent is incredible,” Overture’s Vice President of Programming and Community Engagement Tim Sauers exclaims, “ This is what happens when you put the arts front and center as a curricular-given quality instruction you will see quality work.” Tim shared that one of the best openings to a musical he ever saw was a private high school’s rendition of Carousel. “You can do a lot if you are creative, and it was conceptually

20

Footnotes

and breathtakingly beautiful.” Schools of every size have continually wowed Tim and his staff of 23 reviewers at Overture Center. Tim and his team nominate various individuals and shows in categories such as Outstanding Lead Performer and Outstanding Musical; and Outstanding Lead Performer finalists can then audition to represent the region at the National Jimmy Awards in New York City. The existence of the Tommy Awards has also encouraged schools to maintain an arts budget due to the continual press the schools and their students receive regarding nominations and wins. In recent years, this has included televised broadcasts highlighting the awards ceremony by Wisconsin Public Television. “The expansion of the program is due to the people and their connections,” Tim shared, mentioning choreographers that work at multiple schools and student friendships have helped grow the community of the Tommy Awards, a community that now countless students and teachers involved in the arts want to be a part of. The 2014 Tommy Awards ceremony will take place Sunday, June 8, 2014. Please visit http://overturecenter. com/community/tommy-awards for additional information regarding times and tickets.

Rising Stars Talent Search Kicks Off Overture Center’s 10th Anniversary Overture Center is excited to kick off their 10th anniversary this fall, but starting the season with the usual tour of a Broadway smash is not the route Overture is taking this time. The beginning of the 10th anniversary season is going to start with how the Overture Center began in the first place: the community. Inspired by the Tommy Awards, and based on a popular talent search model, the Rising Stars competition is giving members of the community a chance to shine under the lights and on the stage that Broadway stars and Tommy Award winners have graced over the years. Some of the judges include TonyAward winning Karen Olivo, producer and music visionary Pacal “DJ Pain 1” Bayley, Theatre Lila co-founder Jessica Lanius, and circus performer and legend Scott O’Donnell, whose circus appeared in Tim Burton’s film Big Fish. Throughout the spring of 2013 in Dane County, the Madison community will audition for the opportunity to win cash prizes and the ability to perform at the final show at Capitol Theatre in September.

Remaining Regional Audition Dates and Locations are as follows: April 5 at Waunakee Village Center, Waunakee April 26 at Goodman Community Center, Madison June 28 at Stoughton Center for the Performing Arts, Stoughton July 19 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Madison August 16 at Westside Community Services Building, Sun Prairie The Rising Stars Talent Search is expecting everything: singers, magicians, dancers, actors, jugglers, musicians, and hidden talents no one has heard of yet. To audition, go to Overture’s website and register at your desired audition location. A scoring rubric is provided there as well. The Callback will be held Saturday, September 6, 2014, followed by The Finals performance on September 28, 2014 at Capitol Theater. For additional information, official rules and guidelines, and continual updates, please visit http://overturecenter.com/ risingstars for details.
