D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S I actually had a chance to go to Lichfield, England this summer. It’s a lovely little town with a beautiful cathedral in its center. There are buildings from every century, from the Tudors on, nestled in its winding streets (including the ubiquitous McDonalds). I got to have a drink at the pub in The George Hotel. In 1707, George Farquhar modeled the innkeeper in our play after its owner. Other characters are said to be based on other local denizens of the time as well. I got to have tea in The Chapter House garden with the cathedral spires looking down at me. Everywhere I went I imagined the characters in our play living here and began imaginary casting of the people on the street in appropriate roles. It made me happy to be there, and I became very eager to share my experience. I thought about when Deb Krajec first brought this adaptation of The Beaux’ Stratagem to our season selection meeting. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’m quite a purist at heart and was initially dubious that an “adaptation” of the original Farquhar piece was the way to go in terms choosing a period piece as a learning experience for the students. Those concerns went quickly out the window as I started reading and found myself laughing out loud. Literally! The spirit of the play and the period was very much intact. It was clear to me that the students would still have the experience of creating and using the appropriate costumes and scenery. The actors would still be working with the language of the time, as the text is in many places verbatim with the original. The wonderful idiosyncratic characters still captured the manners of the time and allowed us to explore this more presentational style of performance. Then there were the benefits to the audience. Some of the more obscure humor and conventions of the time had been trimmed making it an extremely accessible and downright funny piece of theatre for any time period. It became my mission to try and bring that wonderful world to my cast and to you the audience. Now we will take you to Lichfield, and hope that you laugh out loud as well. Maureen Kilmurry
N O T E S O N T H I S A DA P TAT I O N For more than 200 years this celebrated late Restoration comedy, with its timelessly wicked and witty observations about society and differences between the sexes, was one of England’s most popular and performed comedies. First produced in 1707, The Beaux’, as it is known familiarly, is still produced occasionally in England. But in this country, while routinely included in anthologies of Restoration drama, The Beaux’ is rarely seen on stage outside a university or conservatory setting. In the fall of 1939, with the goal of making it more accessible to a modern audience, Thornton Wilder began, but never completed, an adaptation of The Beaux’ Stratagem. In 2004, Ken Ludwig accepted the invitation offered by the Wilder estate to finish the work. The completed play, sixty-seven years in the making, was produced with great success in 2006 by the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.

CAST BIOS Kirsten Benjamin (Lady Bountiful) Kirsten is a senior theatre arts major who is ecstatic to be in this great production with so many awesome people! She was previously seen as Joan in Nickel and Dimed, Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Catherine Watts in Censored on Final Approach, as well as numerous MUPS productions. She would like to thank Maureen, Carissa, and the whole cast and crew for making this such an enjoyable experience, as well as her friends and family for their endless love and support. Kirsten has had a blast working on the quirky character of Lady Bountiful, and she hopes you enjoy the show! Alexandra Bonesho (Cherry) Allie is a junior theatre arts major. Recent roles include Gerry Hansen in Censored on Final Approach, Cow 2 in Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type, Holly/ Melissa in Nickel and Dimed, Yvonne in Sunday in the Park with George, Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and a TRIBE member in the Sunset Playhouse’s Hair. She will portray Alais in the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre’s The Lion in Winter this spring and participated in the Skylight Opera’s Summer Musical Project. Thank you to Maureen for her beautiful direction, the cast, crew, my family and friends for all of their love and support! Josalyn Boyles (Country Woman) Josalyn is a sophomore at Marquette and loves theatre. She was in every production in high school and has been in one production at Marquette called The Real Queen of Hearts Ain’t Even Pretty. She will also be in the February production of The Laramie Project. She aspires to continue on her theatre journey at Marquette by pursuing a theatre minor and hopes that this joy will be a part of her career after college. Ben Braun (Daniel) Ben makes his debut performance here on Marquette stage. While performing in over ten theatrical productions in high school, he enjoys the challenge of theatre on a college level. Tim Braun (Tom Aimwell) Tim is a junior double majoring in theatre arts and public relations. Mohammad ElBsat (Foigard) Mohammad is a PhD student in the electrical engineering department. He is excited to be working with Maureen, the cast, and the crew. His previous credits include Oberon/Theseus in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mitch Mahoney in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and three senior capstone projects. He is also a proud member of the Studio 013 Refugees, Marquette’s only improv comedy group. A huge

Joe Picchetti (Sullen) Joe is a senior theatre major and broadcasting minor. He is incredibly excited to be a part of The Beaux’ Stratagem, and would like to thank Maureen for this great opportunity. Joe has been seen in numerous mainstage productions including A Midsummer Night’s Dream as the role of Lysander and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee as the role of Leaf Coneybear. He has also been seen in Quasi’s production of Henry V, and he can be seen in Chamber Theatre’s production of The Lion in Winter in the spring as the role of Phillip. He would like to thank Maureen, Carissa, Maddy, Raquel, and the rest of the cast and the crew for all of their hard work. He would also like to thank his family, friends, and roommates for their never ending love and support. Andrea Schoening (Lady) Andrea is a junior theatre arts major with an emphasis on management, direction, and design. This is her first time acting on the Helfaer mainstage, and she is extremely pleased to be given this opportunity to further expand her horizons! If you are wondering about her past credits, you may have recently seen her up in the booth stage managing The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; or you may have seen her on stage in a number of MUPS productions in the past 2 years. She is also the current president of the Marquette University Players Society (MUPS), and is absolutely loving every minute. She would really like to thank Maureen for believing in her, Carissa as well as her lovely ASM’s for putting up with us, and the rest of the cast as well as the entire production staff for putting together this amazing show. P R O D U C T I O N S TA F F Todd Denning (Vocal/Dialect Coach) Todd is a theatre artist who lives and works in Milwaukee as an actor, director, teacher, fight choreographer, and sound designer. He was the director for Marquette’s first production this season, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Last year he directed Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type, and was the sound designer and vocal coach for Censored on Final Approach. Currently, Todd can also be seen on stage as Captain Hook and Mr. Darling in Peter Pan and Wendy with First Stage Children’s Theater. He is also the Co-Director of the Young Company of the First Stage Theater Academy, and will be directing Julius Caesar (Dec. 3-4) with the Young Company later this year. Todd holds an MFA from the University of California-Irvine. Raquel Garces (Assistant State Manager) Raquel is a sophomore this 2010-2011 season and excited to be assistant stage managing another amazing Maureen Kilmurry show. As a lighting designer hopeful, she is grateful to learn and experience another important element to creating a great performance. She would like to thank her director Maureen, fellow ASM Maddy, and her stage manager Carissa. She hopes you enjoy this wonderful show. Lex Gernon (Assistant Scenic Designer) Lex , a sophomore, is so happy to have had the opportunity to work on this scenic design. He has also assisted on the design of Spelling Bee earlier this year. He is in complete awe of Ron and his incredible talent. His goal is to be designing for the mainstage here at the Helfaer soon. Noah Greenia (Assistant Lighting Designer) Noah is a senior and a technical theatre major. He has done design and production work on a number of Marquette University productions, most recently the lighting design for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and the 2010 senior capstones 4:48 Psychosis and Attempts on Her Life. Other credits at Marquette include the sound design for Sunday in the Park with George and The Spitfire Grill, the lighting design for Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type, and as 6 Marquette University
master electrician for nearly a dozen main stage productions. He is also a Co-Technical Director of MUPS for his third consecutive year. Noah would like to thank Dan, Nancy, Andy, Chelsea and everyone else who has supported him on the journey thus far. Stephen Hudson-Mairet (Chair) 2010-11 marks Stephen’s eleventh season at Marquette. Stephen thanks the Department’s Season Subscribers and loyal patrons for their continued support and for watching our talented students grow in their time with us. Stephen has completed numerous scenic or lighting designs on the Helfaer stage. This season Stephen will be completing the scenic design for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and The Lion in Winter. Stephen would like to thank our wonderful faculty and students – it is a pleasure to work with such talent on a daily basis. Stephen lives quite happily in a very old house in Wauwatosa with his wife Heidi, and daughters Emma and Grace. Andrea Johnson (Dance Choreographer) Andrea Hill Johnson graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 1996 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree in Dance and a Minor in Comparative Literature. She graduated with Academic Honors, as well as High Honors in Dance. Her theatre work includes choreography for: The Music Man, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and The Fantasticks (Rocky Mountain Repertory), Romeo and Juliet (Boulevard Theatre), and last season’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream (MU). Andrea is a founding member (1997-2001) of the Danceworks Performance Company and has choreographed eight works for the company. Andrea is the Artistic Director for Danceworks Performance Company 2 (PreProfessional) and the Intensive Study Scholarship Program, as well as Curator for the Danceworks DanceLAB. She has been instructing Danceworks students in modern, ballet, and jazz since 1996 and is a Lecturer at Marquette University.

Maureen Kilmurry (Director) A graduate of Marquette University, Ms. Kilmurry received her MFA from Southern Methodist University’s Professional Actor Training Program. She has acted in professional regional theatre companies in Seattle, Dallas, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival. A member of Actors Equity Association, she also lived in New York City for several years where she appeared both “Off”, & “Off-Off” Broadway. With other SMU graduates in New York she helped found, and later ran, an actors’ cooperative whose goals were the continuing education of the professional actor through workshops, independent projects and showcases of new plays. Since returning to her native Milwaukee, she has turned her focus to directing and teaching. Local directing credits include projects for Windfall Theatre, Playwrights Studio Theatre, Amethyst Productions, The Boulevard Ensemble, the John Michael Kohler Art Center, Manitowoc Civic Theatre and the Haggerty Museum. In her 13th year as part of the Marquette theatre faculty, she has taught advanced acting classes as well as directed The Miracle Worker, The Children’s Hour, Harvey, Romeo and Juliet, Proof, The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, In Common Hours, The Winter’s Tale, The Cherry Orchard, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Ms. Kilmurry has also been the vocal and dialect coach for productions at Marquette University and in the Milwaukee area including Deathtrap, Shirley Valentine, Dead Man Walking, Everyman, Blood Brothers, Hekebe, Betrayal and Al McGuire. David Krajec (Fight Choreographer) David is pleased to be working with the very talented cast and crew of The Beaux’ Stratagem. He has been choreographing theatrical stage combat throughout the region for over 25 years and has been the action coordinator/fight director for a number of Marquette University theatre productions. David is currently the Project Manager for the Milwaukee office of Mainstage Theatrical Supply, Inc. Prior to moving to Mainstage, he was an associate professor of theatre at Cardinal Stritch University where he was the scenic/ lighting designer and technical director.
David earned a BFA in Speech/Theatre from Kent State University and an MFA in Lighting Design/Technology from Western Illinois University. He is also a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of America, National Fire Protection Association, Phi Kappa Phi honor society and Alpha Psi Omega national theatre honorary fraternity, and is a founding member of the International Secondary Education Theatre Safety Association. Debra Krajec (Artistic Director/ Costume Designer) Debra has served as a costume designer as well as a director on MU’s mainstage for the past twenty-six years. Deb received her MFA from Texas Christian University, and has worked professionally as a costume designer, a director, and an actress. In Milwaukee, Deb has designed costumes for Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, and Next Act Theatre and directed for In Tandem Productions and Playwrights’ Studio of Milwaukee. She is very active in the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, where she is a Fellow of the Institute. She is a member of Actors Equity Association. Deb has been very happily married to Beaux Stratagem’s fight choreographer, David Krajec, for twenty two years. They will collaborate again on The Laramie Project in February. Chester Loeffler-Bell (Technical Director) Chester has served as lighting designer, technical director, and scene shop supervisor since joining the department in the fall of 2001. Professor Loeffler-Bell manages the scene shop, supervises and advises student lighting designers. Chester has been an active professional lighting designer for the past 20 years, having designed for In Tandem Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Theatre X, Cape Fear Shakespeare Festival, and Carroll College. His recent artistic work includes the lighting design for Sunday in the Park with George for Marquette University, Girl in the Frame for In Tandem Theatre, Poor Tom for Marquette University in collaboration with the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Ireland, and McGuire at Hofstra University. Chester lives in Mukwonago with his wife Susan, sons Harry, Sam, and Joe, and dog, Sophie. Marquette University 7
P R O D U C T I O N S TA F F ( c o n t .) Michael McNamara (Lighting Designer) Michael is pleased to be designing for the first time at Marquette. He has been the assistant professor of lighting design at Purdue University since 2007 after previously holding a similar position at the University of Arizona. For eight years he was Resident Assistant Lighting Designer with the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC where he worked on more than fifty productions with design teams from around the world. He has been an assistant designer at the Seattle, San Diego, Pittsburgh, and Portland Opera companies and at the Royal Opera in London. In recent years, he has served as Associate Lighting Designer for operas in Los Angeles, Toronto, San Diego and Tel Aviv, Israel. He has designed with numerous area theatre companies in Chicago and Indianapolis and is an artistic associate with First Folio Theatre Company in Oak Brook, IL. He has also designed and taught as a guest artist at the University of Kentucky, the University of WisconsinMilwaukee, and Wheaton College. Michael received an MFA in Stage Design from Northwestern University and is a member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829. Ron Naversen (Scenic Designer) Ron has an MFA in Scenic Design from Carnegie Mellon University and a PHD in Theater History from Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he is now Professor of Scenic Design and Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Theater. Ron maintains a freelance career designing for university and professional theaters including New Harmony Theater, Nebraska Repertory Theater and the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Company. Connie L. Petersen (Costume Shop Supervisor)Connie is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Ron Naversen again after working with him where she received her MFA in Costume and Scenic Design from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale,. She has worked professionally for Central 8 Marquette University
City Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Denver Center Theatre Company, and Playmakers Repertory Company at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Her recent designs at Marquette include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Nickel and Dimed, Heidi Chronicles, Tartuffe, J.B., Bye, Bye Birdie and Fifth of July. Connie is happy to be back for her 9th Season with the support of her husband, Heath and ohso-fast growing Emma. Carissa Saia (Stage Manager) Carissa Saia is a sophomore theatre arts major with an emphasis in management and design, and a minor in advertising. She was recently an assistant stage manager for Censored on Final Approach and Sunday in the Park with George. She also stage managed Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type. She is very grateful to be stage managing, and for this experience to be working with Maureen. Chris Whitman (Sound Designer) Chris is junior in the College of Communication. Chris has worked in a variety of positions in past productions at MU including the sound design for The Heidi Chronicles and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Most recently Chris acted as the sound designer for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Chris just returned from studying abroad in Italy, focusing on Roman history. In the past Chris has worked for ETC in project management and at the Interlochen Center for the Arts as well as various technical roles within the University. Madelyn Yee (Assistant Stage Manager) Madelyn Yee is a freshman technical theatre major and is delighted to be working on her first mainstage production here at Marquette. She would like to thank everyone involved for all their hard work, especially Maureen for her wonderful direction, as well as stage manager Carissa and fellow ASM Raquel for showing her the ropes. SCENIC DESIGN CONCEPT
In researching the period in which Farquhar’s sets his boisterous comedy, I didn’t have to look much further than the satirical paintings of William Hogarth. His “Rakes Progress” and “Marriage a la Mode” conveyed the same wit and humor in The Beaux’ Stratagem and was richly detailed with the appropriate settings, properties, and characters. Look around the set and you may recognize some of his handiwork. Thanks William!

COSTUME DESIGN CONCEPT The Beaux’ Stratagem was written in the early 1700’s, in a time in history that was about to transition from the heavy Baroque style to a lighter, feminine Rococo style. It takes place in a small country town in England, and does not have a preponderance of upper class aristocratic characters like so many other plays in this era. Instead, we have lots of country folk, both honorable and dis-honorable, and a few landed gentry known for their eccentric personalities and character flaws. Therefore, my aim with the design for costumes for this production was to be true to the nature of these personalities, as well as to give a taste of the fashion styles of the period as they might be seen in a small country town. Lady Bountiful and her son Sullen have the most elaborate clothing – she is a wealthy, generous matriarch of the town, and dresses very smartly, even though her rather gory hobby of practicing medicine doesn’t suit her clothing nor her status. The wonderful visual metaphor I was given for Lady B by director Maureen Kilmurry was that she is “like Zsa Zsa Gabor in ‘Green Acres’, the old TV show – she dresses in her finest clothes and jewels to do the most ridiculous things.” She chooses the clothing for her sot of a son, Sullen, I think, and perhaps fancier duds than he would chose for himself. He also is dressed very finely for staggering around the house with a constant snoot full. The two young heroes of the play, Archer and Aimwell, also have specific fashion requirements to help them portray their chosen identities: Aimwell takes on the persona of a rich lord, and Archer his servant. So their clothes must suit those social stations while they play their “stratagem” to find a wealthy woman to wed and solve their money problems. Hence, Aimwell’s clothes must reflect that of a travelling gentleman, and Archer of his manservant. We also have other unsavory characters, lower class locals, whose dress must reflect their station in life and their economic status. I have placed most of the country folks in earth tones, with the exception of Gloss, the crooked cleric who dresses in black, and Cherry, the saucy sweet, and ultimately honest bar wench with a true heart who dresses in a ripe red color to suit her name. The rest of the upper class folks wear more colorful, patterned attire in brighter colors and richer fabrics suitable to their positions, but also to their location; they would have much finer clothing were they in London. I’ve done my best to allow the character to emerge thru the clothing choices, and chosen to “tweak” historical accuracy in a few places to suit the action required. I have loved designing a show that has women sword fighting!!! It is my hope the clothing styles and colors will help you to understand who each of the characters are and what their personalities might be, and add to your enjoyment of the play.
