D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S Hamlet? With college students? Are you crazy? Perhaps. However, I actually think it is a really good choice for us here at Marquette. According to our “grid”, it was time to do a serious Shakespearean piece. How many tragedies or histories have characters who are actually college students? How many tackle issues that our college students actually deal with? In Hamlet we have it all: parents remarrying, parents dying, parents not approving of their child’s boyfriend or girlfriend. We have identity crises, relationship issues, and the contemplation of suicide as a means to deal with an overwhelming world that doesn’t make sense. Although Hamlet may be a prince, he is still a young man with struggles that ring true today. Knowing that in performance the full play can come in around 4 hours, it was a priority for me to create a cutting that would not only help our students be successful in their performances, but also help our audiences be successful in following the action of the play. To that end I have focused on the story lines of the families and less so on the somewhat convoluted historical context of wars and invasions. Our play is not set in a specific year or time, other than it is in the past. The designer notes will give you more information on the evolution of the visual concept and the Celtic references we chose to use. What was important to me was to create a world on the brink between ways of the past and ways of the future. It is a world seeking to be more progressive, where young men are sent abroad to University and knowledge and culture are embraced. At the same time it is a world where problems are ultimately solved by violence. We can recognize the world of this play. Shakespeare…...a man of his time, and ours. - Maureen Kilmurry

COSTUME DESIGN CONCEPT Being a show with such universal concepts, a specific time or place was not set. Instead inspiration was drawn from many eras including old Viking/ Scandinavian, Celtic, and Pre-Raphaelite. One of my biggest goals was to make this castle feel large and imposing, as if it were an omnipresent character in itself. However, it should still feel like a home, even if it is a broken one. Players should be able to actually play with the setting provided, and make it their own. The color and texture schemes, like the rest of it, are meant to be versatile. It is a conglomeration of many different colors so different aspects or characters may be highlighted (or not) in the appropriate moments. SCENIC DESIGN CONCEPT For this production, the director Maureen and I wanted to create a very universal feel to the world of costumes, avoiding using only one time period, but instead aspects from several, including Greek, Roman, Medieval, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and contemporary high fashion. Overall, the world is very devoid of bright colors, the players being the only characters that bring large amounts of color to the picture. Additionally, Hamlet’s family and Ophelia’s family are denoted by particular colored bands of fabric, blood red for the former and deep blue for the latter.
