SET TING Location: Beaumont Sur Mer, French Riviera Time: Present Day There will be one ten minute intermission D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S As Managing Director of In Tandem Theatre, I don’t often get the chance to take on outside directing projects. We produce musicals, but on the smaller side to accommodate our studio theatre. Having grown up in the world of musical theatre, I miss those big, splashy shows full of extravagant costumes and scenery, huge ensemble numbers, and short, snappy scenes. The bonus with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is that the script is smart and funny, giving heart to truly interesting characters. The story is different than many musicals, where even the hardest heart finds its soft spot and everyone discovers where they belong. The opportunity to put together Dirty Rotten Scoundrels has been a delight. The Marquette theater students are a hard-working, talented group who aren’t afraid to try anything. The outstanding stage management team and crew made everything run smoothly, and a fantastic artistic and design team created the perfect landscape to tell our story. I hope you enjoy the toe-tapping tunes and heart-warming story as much as I have.

SCENIC DESIGN CONCEPT

Hotel Lobby Rendering – Dirty Rotten Scoundrels by Rachel Finn COSTUME DESIGN CONCEPT

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels takes place in the modern day on the French Riviera, the height of elegance and sophistication. In designing the production I utilized the current fascination with mid-century fashion – thanks to Mad Men – and dressed our characters in contemporary clothing with a 50’s and 60’s flair. Lawrence Jameson lives the good life swindling rich, lonely women out of their money and diamonds, as such, he wears classic clothing, a nautical themed blazer and crisp khaki trousers. On the flip side, Freddy Benson is new to the con game and shows up on the Riviera in his Madras shorts, tank top and outdated Members Only Jacket, providing a comical opposite to 6
