D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S My first experience with CRIMES OF THE HEART was in college. All the actresses in the theatre department worked on it for scene study classes. It was an obvious choice - lots of young women’s roles, juicy subject matter and loads of laughs. I hadn’t thought of the play in years when Michael approached me about directing it for Chamber. I remembered it fondly and really wanted to direct here, so I said, “Yes, of course!” Working on this piece has been joyful, and very fulfilling. I’ve discovered what a beautifully written and well-crafted piece it is, something I didn’t appreciate all those years ago. Beth Henley has created a play that I equate with comfort food - it’s somehow familiar, delicious, zesty and satisfying. The characters are deeply drawn, the relationships palpable, the comedy dark, and the humanity touching - yet none of it feels too intellectual nor too sentimental. It is a Pulitzer Prize winner, after all. I hope you enjoy CRIMES OF THE HEART. I hope you laugh, I hope you cry. I hope you go home feeling fat and happy. ~Mary MacDonald Kerr
