INTERMISSION D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S What can one say when you are talking about a man who is considered the very best lyric writer and most adventurous composer in the musical theatre. Stephen Sondheim has given us so many wonderful theatrical adventures and tonights production is a celebration of his earlier works. Written over 30yrs ago, Side by Side by Sondheim, gives you a look at many of the big musicals he was instrumental in creating. West Side Story, Gypsy, A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Pacific Overtures, Follies and Company. You may be sitting there thinking, I really do not know a lot of Sondheim’s music. So I invite you to read through the list of songs we will be performing tonight and you may be surprised just how much of his music you really do know. Sondheim, now 80yrs old, continued to write more lyrics and music. Shows like Sunday in the Park with George, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods just to name a few. Sondheim’s music and lyrics are very challenging for a performer. Sondheim often weaves two melodies together and they fit perfectly. Then you have the words, and Sondheim loves to use a lot of words. Thank you to the cast of tonights show for taking on this challenge. Sit back and enjoy the music and lyrics Stephen Sondheim. Joe Feustel - Director 2 Memories Dinner Theatre
