MILWAUKEE REPERTORY THEATER
GIVES BACK
A Christmas Carol has been helping families in need since 1994 through their Christmas Families Program. Cindy Moran, current Public Relations Director at The Milwaukee Repertory Theater and Kristen Olsen, former Stackner Cabaret Manager, shared some insight about the generous tradition. The tradition started in 1994, when The Ghost of Christmas Present (at that time, being portrayed by actor Michael Nash) decided he wanted to share this joy [of the season] in a more tangible manner. One of the servers in The Milwaukee Repertory’s Stackner Cabaret worked for Rosalie Manor, a Milwaukee social service agency, and one night she and Michael had a conversation that led to the start of a wonderful idea. She selected a few families in need, and Michael began going to the lobby of the Pabst Theater after each show to ask for donations. He’d then go up to Kristen Olsen’s office in the Cabaret and count the collection. It was mostly loose change as Kristen recalls, and Michael would have stacks of pennies and nickels on the desk… 8

For the next couple of years Michael enlisted a couple of the acting interns to assist him in the lobby after the shows, and the amount collected each season grew. Michael would use this money to buy gifts for the families in need, and Michael would take deliveries to their homes in his Ghost of Christmas Present costume. The Cabaret server went with him to her clients’ homes and remembers, “I do recall the look of wonder on both the faces of the kids as well as their mothers when Michael showed up in full costume! The regal nature of his costume and the energy of his charismatic personality stood in stark contrast to the humble homes of our clients.” The tradition has continued on, and The Rep’s Christmas Families Program has served countless organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, La Causa, and Hope House. Overall, The Milwaukee Repertory Theater has collected over $350,000 through the program, ensuring all area families have a wonderful holiday season no matter their situation. The Milwaukee Repertory’s Christmas Families Program accepts donations in advance. All advance donations can be sent to Leslie Fillingham, Finance Director at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, 108 E. Wells Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202. Please indicate the donation is for Christmas Families. Issue #2

JONATHAN SMOOTS
IS THIS YEAR’S ‘SCROOGE’ This season, a new Scrooge will take the stage in Milwaukee Rep’s A Christmas Carol. Jonathan Smoots, beloved local actor that has appeared in shows at American Players Theatre, Next Act, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, and Renaissance Theaterworks, will take his turn portraying the iconic Dickens’ character after more than 10 years of understudying the role. An avid fan of Dickens himself, Jonathan Smoots is finally stepping into the role of Ebenezer himself, after having played almost everyone else in the annual production. He has shared a dressing room with years of Scrooges: Jon Daley, Lee Ernst, Jim Pickering, and Christopher Donahue. “They were all wonderful in different ways and brought their own unique personalities and skills to the role.” Now it is Jonathan’s moment to shine, and Jonathan is well aware of the responsibility that comes with this role, both as a character and as a role model for the 30 plus actors. “I need to reset and refresh my thinking about the part. I’ll begin by re-reading Dickens’ original novella and then in rehearsals try to return to the actor’s most basic detective work: What makes this guy tick? What does he want? From life? From others?” However, despite the responsibility, nerves aren’t in the cards for Jonathan. “I know this piece of theater has been thoroughly audience-tested. If we honor its truths, it will be tremendously satisfying and enjoyable.” The Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s production of A Christmas Carol runs from December 2-24 at the beautiful historic Pabst Theater in downtown Milwaukee. For more information and tickets, please visit MilwaukeeRep.com or Footlights.com for details.

CUDAHY CAROLERS SAY
‘FAREWELL’ FOR NOW In Tandem Theatre is wrapping up a popular holiday gift as it ends its 280-performance run of Milwaukee’s best-known alternative holiday show. Administrative Associate Cindy Thomas shares what’s next while In Tandem Theatre co-founders Chris and Jane Flieller reminisce about the wild ride that is ‘A Cudahy Caroler Christmas’. “Oh, my god! It’s Stasch Zielinski!” Those were the words that rang out from across a crowded wedding reception that Chris and Jane attended in Madison after thousands of fans had seen the show. Ten years later, Chris has continued to maintain his local celebrity status due mostly to the constant recognition he has received as the beloved character of the musical comedy. The hilarious homage to beer, bowling, friendship and forgiveness follows Stasch Zielinski on his quest to reunite the beloved Carolers for one final concert, despite the group disbanding five years ago after a bitter feud. Nearly 40,000 people have seen nine runs of A Cudahy Caroler Christmas. The show has also sold over 5,000 original cast recordings, featuring the show’s classics “Ach Ya Der Once”, “We T’ree Guys From Cudahy Are”, and “O, Bowling Night”. It’s the little show that started in a storefront theatre on Milwaukee’s south side and is well known for its local references and bawdy, good-natured humor. 12
Milwaukee Footlights
“There are certainly the beer, bowling and even boob jokes, but behind the hilarity is a simple story with a lot of heart. It’s about embracing forgiveness and coming together as friends and family,” says co-founder and director Jane Flieller. “What’s not to love?” However, after 280 performances, all of which have featured Chris as the original Stasch, In Tandem has decided to put the show to rest for a while. “It may come back in the future,” In Tandem’s Administrative Associate Cindy Thomas shared, offering some hope to those who have made attending this production an annual tradition. When asked if Chris would return in the iconic role of Stasch, she replied, “If and when we bring back the Carolers, we’d have to write Chris in as Stasch’s dad! We joke about it, but seriously, from an artistic standpoint, characters need to be portrayed by actors in the appropriate age range and time does march on! We want to maintain the production’s integrity and this way, Chris will go out strong.” Despite A Cudahy Caroler Christmas leaving the intimate 99-seat theater space In Tandem calls home, Cindy reassured us there will always be a holiday show. “We love to present lighter, alternative fare for the holidays. It counters the stress of the season and offers up something for the grown ups.” Nothing is set in stone yet, but there is already a new holiday alternative in mind for the 2015 season. The Cudahy Carolers have given Milwaukee theatergoers some fantastic memories over the years. When asked what they recall from shows past, Chris Flieller shared one of his favorite stories. “The second season we did the show, a group of ladies from the then-Cudahy Mayor’s office ordered a group of tickets. They had seen the show the year before and loved it. Though the Mayor himself was dead-set against going, believing the show was nothing more than a detriment to Cudahy and its citizens, they managed to drag him along. So there he sat in the front row, slouched down, arms folded across his chest. The show started. Within ten minutes, he was sitting straight, leaning forward with tears streaming down his face from laughing so hard.” That’s the kind of reaction that so many audiences have had over the years. But as Chris himself put so eloquently, “It’s time to hang up the choir robe and ride off into the sunset, under a Polish moon.” A Cudahy Caroler Christmas runs from November 28 - January 4, 2015 at In Tandem’s Tenth Street Theatre, and is recommended for individuals thirteen and older. A special New Year’s Eve show will be held on Tuesday, December 31st at 9:30pm with a champagne toast, reception, sing-along and “fireworks” post show. A modern-day re-telling of one of the world’s most enduring stories visits Next Act this season. This feature is courtesy of Dennis Charles, special to Footlights.
NON-TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY FARE LANDS AT NEXT ACT Known for its unique and adventurous play selection, it’s no surprise that A.R. Gurney’s
Heresy should arrive at Next Act Theatre this time of year. Heresy is a modern-day re-telling of one of the world’s most enduring stories of love, courage, and faith-that also happens to be downright funny. Gurney’s world is near-future America, 2020, where troubled times have become the norm. Society has been unraveling at more than the fringes. Upheaval and repression are cyclical. Food is scarce, resources are vanishing, the power grid is iffy at best and the government’s coming down hard. Not to worry. Here comes Chris, the outspoken son of Joe and Mary, who seems to have the answers to life’s troubling questions in this world. One problem, though – Chris has been taken in by Homeland Security for his own “protection”. It seems the powers-that-be are a little nervous about how Chris wants people to get along, live modestly and just basically chill out. So it’s up to his parents and friends to get him released. The adventure unwinds from there, buoyed up by Gurney’s quick wit and sly irreverence for the status quo. As in the traditional holiday stories we cherish, Heresy finds a common truth we can all believe in, a vision for humanity that is uplifting, unifying, and fair. Our good news messenger, Chris, and his funny friends are a breath of fresh air in a world we’d like to see get better. Likewise, the play issues a slight foreboding, a suggestion of a darker future if humanity can’t get its act together and change its ways. How that part of the story goes is up to us. Heresy comes with an added bonus: Next Act is creating a special cabaret, as a fun-filled, musical conclusion to the festivities. Local actor, improv specialist and comic writer Doug Jarecki was put on the task, aided and abetted by composer Brian Myers. Original songs, wacky commercial breaks and some downright hilarious dialog does a riff on Heresy that will surely entertain. And the surprise ending is right out of this world. Heresy runs November 13-December 14 at Next Act Theatre at 255 S. Water Street. For more information about the production and tickets, please visit nextact.org. You can also view the playbill for the production ahead of time at footlights.com 16
