In Memoriam
Betty Ewens Quadracci The arts community in Milwaukee lost a generous, long-time friend and supporter when Betty Quadracci passed away at her home in Chenequa on December 9, 2013. She was 75. The announcement on the Quad/Graphics website, excerpted below, recounts her extraordinary life and contributions.
Recognized as the matriarch of Quad/Graphics, Betty Quadracci co-founded the Company in 1971 with her late husband, Harry V. Quadracci. The company started operations in a vacant factory in Pewaukee with a single printing press and just 11 employees. Today Quad/Graphics is a leading global printer and multichannel media integrator with 25,000 employees worldwide at 65-plus printing plants and dozens of support facilities. … During Quad/Graphics’ early years Betty held many roles. In 1985, Betty founded Quad/Creative, a graphic design firm now known as Quad/Graphics Creative Solutions. In 2002 she became a member of Quad/Graphics’ Board of Directors. Betty also served as the President of the Windhover Foundation, a philanthropic organization funded by the Quadracci family. Betty was devoted to the Milwaukee community and Southeastern Wisconsin, making her mark in publishing, the arts and education, and other philanthropic endeavors. She became publisher of Milwaukee Magazine in 1983 and later was named president of the award-winning monthly publication. During her tenure of almost 30 years, the monthly publication garnered more than 200 state and national awards, including two Gold Medals for General Excellence from the City and Regional Magazine Association and a Best Editorial Gold Medal for a publisher’s letter written by Betty entitled “The First Amendment Starts Here.” In 2012 she was inducted into the Milwaukee Press Club’s Media Hall of Fame. Betty was well known as a champion of the arts, serving on the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Board of Trustees for many years. In 1997 she and Harry spearheaded a $10 million matching donation from Quad/Graphics to kick off fundraising for a major addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum -- the Quadracci Pavilion. Designed by world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2001, the pavilion has become a widely recognized symbol of Milwaukee. Betty received a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., in 1961 and attended the University of Fribourg in Fribourg, Switzerland. Betty was one of the first trained Montessori teachers in the United States and helped establish the Waukesha Montessori School in 1964. She also helped launch the Waukesha Head Start program in 1968, now the oldest continually operating Head Start program in the United States. The Quadracci Powerhouse Theater at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater was named for the Quadracci’s after a leadership gift to the Rep’s endowment campaign in the 1990’s. In 2002, Ed Burgess became chair, and served in many roles until his death in 2011. In 2003, the Department began a series of successful NCCI and NEA grants, producing works from Susan Marshall, Mark Morris, Alwin Nikolais and Garth Fagan. In 2007, the Department hosted its first American College Dance Festival Conference (hosting again in March 2014). In 2008, the department debuted a new series of study abroad and international research opportunities for students. In 2013, an internship program with professional dance companies in Milwaukee and local school programs became reality.

In 1964, under the vision of Adolph Suppan (1908-2004), the Department of Dance was born. With Chair Myron Nadel came a long roster of exceptional pioneers, including Gloria Gustafson, founding director of Milwaukee Ballet, in 1970. In 1979, Marcia Ruth Parsons started her prolific tenure, now in its 34th year, at the forefront of the department. Under Parsons’ direction, the Department continued its national visibility with a distinguished list of professionals making Milwaukee a creative arts incubator, including Robert Ellis Dunn and Kathryn Posin, plus locals such as Deborah Wenzler-Farris (Danceworks Inc.), Isabelle Kralj (Theatre Gigante), Phaleshia Pinder-Fearen and Debra Loewen (Wild Space Dance Company).

40th Anniversary for Waukesha Choral Union (but they’ve been performing much longer than that…) The Waukesha Choral Union has been musically active for over 60 years and is celebrating its 40th anniversary under this name. However, its history begins back in 1937 when the student choruses at Carroll College invited the community to join them in singing Handel’s “Messiah” during the holiday season. By 1949, this combined student and community chorus was called the Waukesha Choral Society.
The group was renamed the Town and Gown in 1961, and the Waukesha Choral Union in 1974, and by 1978, choir membership required an audition. The 40th anniversary season, “Light,” will wrap up with two concerts: a March 23 performance of 2013-2014 Concert Season “Creation” by Franz Haydn and a May 3 concert featuring Ola Gjello’s “Sunrise Mass.” For more information on chorus auditions and the final two concerts of the season, visit www.choralunion.org or call 414-297-9310.
