Where are we headed?

The world of print is constantly changing and adapting in a world where digital and online media seems to be king. Fortunately there is still a place for niche print, especially in the world of performing arts! Footlights plans to be part of the theatre going experience for the next 25 years, and being a strong voice in the world of ever-changing media. 2014 will bring many new changes, including a new and improved website that will better serve our audiences, as well as the performing arts community here in Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Footlights will also become more accessible, by becoming more mobile and integrated in the social networking sphere. The 2014-2015 season is just around the corner, and we cannot wait to show you what Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago have in store! Thank you for the past 25 years, and here’s to 25 more! 

{footnotes} Annual UPAF Ride for the Arts Set for June 1, 2014

For over 30 years, the Ride for the Arts has been a staple on offering support to the performing arts community in Milwaukee through a day spent biking. The funds raised by the ride help various groups around Milwaukee, including but limited to The Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Ballet, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and First Stage. The ride offers five different routes, ranging from a leisurely five-mile route to a challenging 66-mile route. The routes take participants all over Milwaukee-over the Hoan Bridge, through the Third Ward, along Lincoln Memorial Drive, and as far south as Grant Park and as far north as Port Washington.

10

Footnotes

Miller Lite sponsors the event again, while Wheel and Sprocket offers bike assistance the day of the event. {footnotes} Milwaukee’s Shakespeare in the Park Turns Five

“One of the best views of the city-after the Art Museum.” Susan Scot Fry, Managing Director of Optimist Theatre, shares her feelings about Shakespeare in the Park’s new home and performing space.

Back in 2008, founders of Optimist Theatre Susan Scot Fry and her husband Ron were in the mood for a new challenge and a new city. Debating a move between Chicago and Milwaukee, the winner ultimately became Milwaukee. So much potential, so much opportunity-it seemed the only thing Milwaukee didn’t offer was Shakespeare in the Park during the summer months. Susan and Ron were determined to change that. Submitting a grant to the Wisconsin Arts Board in 2009, Susan and Ron figured it was a long shot but decided to go for it anyway. Lo and behold, the grant was given. Optimist Theatre quickly started preparing for their debut Shakespeare in the Park production for the following summer. After the grant had been given, the project only gained more momentum. Jim Pickering, Wisconsin favorite and resident

12

actor at The Milwaukee Rep, agreed to play Prospero in their inaugural production The Tempest. Tom Reed, member of the Theatre Faculty at Alverno College, offered up a courtyard on the Alverno College grounds for their first production. In the summer of 2010, the hard work of these passionate people brought forth Milwaukee’s first Shakespeare in the Park production. The Tempest featured A-list equity actors and received rave reviews. Shakespeare in the Park was success. In 2013, Shakespeare in the Park continued to use Alverno College as a rehearsal space, but made the move to COA Youth and Family Centers’ newly built Selig-JosephFolz Amphitheater, beautifully showcased in Alice Bertschy Kadish Park. The 2013 production As You Like It was performed in the spacious new location, complete with a spectacular view of the Milwaukee skyline as a backdrop.

The word is still spreading, and the best way to get additional information about the season’s upcoming performances is to sign up for their email newsletter on the Optimist Theatre website.
