{footnotes} Marcus Promotions/Footlights 25th Anniversary – Chapter 2
A Brand Is Born.
Chapter 1 appeared in the Sept/Oct issue of Footlights and can be seen online at Footlights.com
After that first season of publishing programs for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Theatre Tesseract and Clavis Theatre, the grant money that paid Steve Marcus was spent and a decision had to be made: What to do for next season? Should the theatres re-apply for another grant or should Steve start a business and offer the service back to the theatres? Within a few weeks of that conversation, three other theatre groups asked Steve if he could publish their programs for the next season. The light bulb came on and a niche market was evolving before his eyes. Footlights was born. In 1990-91, Footlights expanded its repertoire to include the Skylight Opera Theatre, Next Generation Theatre, Milwaukee Theatre Festival, and American Inside Theatre. Marcus Promotions also had its first employee, Karin Schell (now Marcus). Karin had recently moved to the area from Arizona and needed a job. Steve hired Karin, his (then) girlfriend, to help him sell advertising in Footlights. Footlights became more than just an event program. It now had a magazinestyle wrap similar to what you see today and what you would find on Broadway in New York. The wrap included editorial and resources on the local arts scene, as well as color advertising. Footlights was an icon of the local arts community. It was a symbol of the collaborative effort of those three companies that came
6

together only a year earlier to create a program to reflect the quality of theatre that was on stage. Footlights was meant to be a souvenir, as well as a resource to the rest of the arts community, along with advertising relevant to their patrons. When Steve and Karin were out selling advertising and talking about the theatre companies they represented, it became increasingly clear that the general public was unaware of the volume and quality of performing arts here in our community. By 1992-93, Footlights had increased its coverage to 15 professional performing arts groups in the Milwaukee market. Footlights’ cast of venues and circulation was growing quickly. The small company was now busier than ever with production, and needed additional sales help to cover growing costs and circulation. After two more hires, one for sales and one for production, Steve hired Matt Thiele as a salesperson in 1994. Now, 19 years later, Matt is Vice President and Director of Sales. He manages seven employees, is the company’s top sales producer, and plays a vital role in Marcus Promotions. Steve describes their coleadership of the company as “Matt is the Yin to my Yang.” Together, they embody the definition: “complementary (instead of opposing) forces interacting to form a dynamic system in which the whole is greater than the parts” which, according to Steve, is their recipe for 25 years of business success. The Marcus Promotions/Footlights story will continue in upcoming issues of Footlights.

It all began in 1954… Milwaukee Repertory Theater celebrates 60 years In July 1954, Milwaukee native Mary Widrig John forged a plan to create a professional theater for the city and Drama Incorporated, under the chairmanship of Miller Brewing Company head Fred Miller, entered into an agreement to rent the Oakland Theatre for what would eventually become The Milwaukee Repertory Theater. On September 16th, 1954, The Milwaukee Journal announced that the name selected through a “namethe-theatre” contest was the “Milwaukee City Circle.” The new name, however, was never used. Tragically, Fred Miller was killed in a small plane crash in December of that year, and the board of directors for Drama Inc. voted to name the theatre The Frederick C. Miller Memorial Theatre. The Fred Miller Theatre opened its doors January 25th, 1955. The Fred Miller Theatre began operation under what is known as the star system. Throughout the fifties, show business luminaries such as Geraldine Brooks, Edward Everett Horton, Sylvia Sidney, Eva LeGallienne, John Kerr, Gloria Grahame, Geraldine Page, Uta Hagen, John Ireland, Fay Bainter, Monique Van Vooren and many others trod the Oakland Avenue boards. In 1969, after 138 productions, The Milwaukee Repertory Theater moved to the Todd Wehr Theater in the new Performing Arts Center downtown. Nighttime view of theater entrance. Doorway has a fabric overhang with the theatre name printed on each side. Posters for Robert Lewis and Tom Daily flank the doors.

Broadway Theatre Center turns 20 October 6, 2013 was the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Broadway Theatre Center in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward. This new theatre center helped spur the revival of the once run-down warehouse district. Within the Theatre Center’s modern exterior is the 358-seat Cabot Theatre, a replica of an 18th century European opera house, complete with intimate seating, an ornate chandelier and a gorgeous ceiling mural of historic Milwaukee scenes and people. The Center also houses the 99-seat Studio Theatre, a versatile black box space. It is home to three theatre companies: Skylight Music Theatre (which owns and operates the building), Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee’s only womenfounded, women-run theatre company, and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Milwaukee’s third largest non-musical theatre company. The Broadway Theatre Center is located at 158 North Broadway.

– A Christmas Carol
A RTISTIC DIR ECTOR’S NOTES Greetings! Welcome to Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol! This year’s production is the 38th installment of The Rep’s telling of this spectacular and relevant holiday tale, the second-longest continuouslyrunning Christmas Carol in America! Since becoming Milwaukee Rep’s Artistic Director in 2010, I’ve learned the deep appreciation that Milwaukee has for this tradition. Members of the children’s cast go on to create their own careers in theater, families center their own holiday celebrations around the play year after year, and people who attended the show with their parents now bring their own children to experience the fundamentally human lessons of Scrooge’s journey. These stories warm my heart very much and serve as an annual reminder to us all of the very real present-day impacts of this classic story. We come back to this story year after year as it, in times of cynicism, reminds us to be grateful for what we have. A Christmas Carol touches us on a universal human level and I look forward to sharing with you Dickens’ vital message of redemption and forgiveness.
Director Gary Witt and the entire Pabst staff for creating such an inviting holiday home for us, and for each of you, in which to enjoy this timeless tale. Last season marked the beginning of a new era for A Christmas Carol as director Aaron Posner took the helm, bringing exciting and rejuvenating ideas to the play. We welcome back Aaron again this year as he brings us the wonderful visual storytelling and heart we’ve come to expect from his productions. This season’s cast includes many Christmas Carol regulars as well as some newcomers. You will see some familiar faces in different places this year – watch out for Mr. Pickering! I hope that you enjoy this year’s production and that Dickens’ timeless story reminds you of the value of your (to borrow a phrase from Mr. Dickens), fellow travelers – be they friends, family, or strangers – as we move through this season with good cheer and a kind word for all our fellows. Happy Holidays! Mark Clements Artistic Director
We’re thrilled to be mounting, once again, this production in the glorious Pabst Theater, which has housed our Carol for each of those 38 productions—a home every bit as grand and majestic as the story itself. We’re very grateful to Pabst Theater Corporation Executive A Christmas Carol –

Arthur Marx has penned a loving and revealing tribute to his dad and uncles who made up the most famous – and funniest – family of all time: the Marx Brothers.
The minute Bill moves into his new condo and prepares for the arrival of his wayward wife, his nosy neighbor Jack appears at the door seeking beer and sympathy.
Noises Off is a hysterical romp packed full of a side-splitting collection of forgotten cues, missed connections, and backstage hilarity!
Join Sparky, Jinx, Frankie, and Smudge as they pay an affectionate homage to the closeharmony male singing groups of the 1950s.

Subtitled “Biography of the Runaway Slave Esteban Montejo,” it is a work that fits perfectly in the Skylight’s conversation about freedom and revolution this season.
His toe-tapping melodies defined an American era and transformed the folk ballad into a vehicle of social commentary and unity.
Explosive acting and classic songs bring down the house in this critically-acclaimed exploration of Judy Garland’s infamous 1968 London comeback.
Her music, led by her “innovative violin work and her soulful vocals” (AV Club), is expressive and groove-oriented, bearing the marks of the southern rock and folk that influenced her.
