– End of the Rainbow

A RTISTIC DIR ECTOR’S NOTES Welcome – I have had a long history working with British playwright, Peter Quilter in the UK, and am therefore delighted to finally bring End of the Rainbow to the Quadracci Powerhouse this season, following its hit runs in the West End and on Broadway. As we perform this powerful play in such an exciting theater space, we also honor the Quadracci family and remember Betty Quadracci, who passed away during this holiday season. Her long-term generosity to Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and her overall contribution to the arts community in Milwaukee is immeasurable, and continues to have a significant and lasting impact on the cultural life of our city. MRT is indebted greatly to Betty, and I dedicate this production to her. End of the Rainbow explores the final months of Judy Garland’s life, during which time she performed for six weeks at The Talk of the Town, a nightclub in London. Recently engaged to Mickey Deans, her soon to be fifth husband, Judy’s tempestuous stay at the Ritz Carleton and her final performances at The Talk of the Town are now legendary. This play is a dramatic snapshot of what might have been happening behind the scenes during those last difficult and challenging months of her life.

movie star in roles such as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Vicky Lester in A Star is Born, and Esther in Meet Me in St. Louis that still hold a fascination for countless thousands of fans, whilst each new generation continues to marvel as they discover the pure genius that was Judy. As well as telling a redemptive story about a cultural icon at the end of her career, this play also provides an amazing opportunity for a tourde-force performance in the role of Judy Garland. I am thrilled to finally be working with legendary Chicago actress Hollis Resnik, who I have much admired since moving to the Midwest four years ago. Despite End of the Rainbow having hit runs in Sydney, London, and New York, the role of Judy in this play has never been played by an American actor before, so it feels somewhat timely and fitting that Hollis can put this to rights. Enjoy End of the Rainbow, and I wish you all a very Happy New Year. Mark Clements Artistic Director

Most people know of Judy Garland’s well publicized struggles with substance abuse throughout her life, but it is Judy Garland’s iconic cultural contribution as a singer and End of the Rainbow –
