– Venus in Fur
A MESSAGE FROM T HE A RT IST IC DIR ECTOR Welcome to Venus in Fur, the first Stiemke Studio production of the 2013/14 Season! I’ve long been an admirer of the work of Venus’ author, David Ives. In addition to his adaptations of classic musicals, David has also given us some of the most thought-provoking, literate, and innovatively side-splitting comedies of the past few decades (including All in the Timing, a collection of comic shorts produced by The Rep right here in the Stiemke Studio in the 1995/96 Season). But what I admire most about David’s work, in addition to his distinctive wit, is its range of depth and complexity. Nothing is ever quite what it seems on first glance, and then just when you think you might have a fuller grasp on what he might be trying to say, the plays do complete 180-degree turnabouts, and reveal themselves to be something else entirely in the most surprising of ways. Subsequent readings or viewings can have exactly the same effect. Such was the case for me after reading Venus in Fur for the first time – so much so that I needed an immediate second reading, followed by a slew of conversations with colleagues around the country to ask questions and to get their viewpoints: “Is this as brilliant as I think it is?” . . . “Did I miss something here?” I was also particularly intrigued by the notion that this play, through each individual directorial interpretation or particular emphasis on design aesthetic elements, could give the audience a distinctive and unique take on the play for every production. The final part of the programming jigsaw puzzle for me was to see the much-lauded Broadway production; if ever the concept of plays needing to be seen rather than simply read was doubted in any way, here was living proof that it is indeed the case most of the time. So, after seeing the spectacular Broadway rendition, I immediately decided it was a mustsee play for us here in Milwaukee. This production, directed by Milwaukee Rep Associate Artist Laura Gordon, features two of my favorite (and now regular), Rep actors: Associate Artist Reese Madigan, last seen in Othello; and Greta Wohlrabe, who was a member of our 2010/11 Season Artistic Intern Ensemble, and who most recently appeared in our production of Clybourne Park last season. I know that they’ll give you a terrific, memorable evening in the theater, and I’m delighted to share their work with you. Cheers! Mark Clements. Artistic Director
