– The Whipping Man
NOTE FROM THE A RTISTIC DIR ECTOR Lorraine Hansberry, playwright of A Raisin in the Sun, once wrote, “in order to create the universal, you must pay very great attention to the specific.” By sharing with us a deeply specific story about three individuals at the end of the Civil War, The Whipping Man playwright Matthew Lopez gives us an opportunity to reflect on the universal and examine our own histories and traditions. A play about African-American slaves in a Jewish household written by a Latino playwright is a unique addition to the plays Milwaukee Rep has produced since I became Artistic Director. The play lives at a confluence of cultures and continues our conversations about diversity, culture, and race, as did productions like Yellowman and The Mountaintop. When asked about writing this play, Matthew Lopez commented, “we as Americans have to take responsibility for our past, even if most of us in the country today are not descendants of slaveholders.” We continue to see the legacy of a country that has
never fully owned the reality of the enslavement of African-Americans. Its DNA has not been unraveled and we still have majorly segregated cities, like this one. We must have conversations about slavery as we must have conversations about the many issues in our history and in our future. As with The Diary of Anne Frank, Ragtime, Clybourne Park, and A Raisin in the Sun, this story alerts us to what can happen, what has happened, and reminds of how far we’ve come and how far we must go. The Whipping Man came across my desk when I first arrived in Milwaukee four years ago and we have been waiting for the right time to program it. I am excited about the conversations this play can prompt in Milwaukee, and am thrilled to have an opportunity for Wisconsin audiences to discover this work. I hope you find this story as compelling as I do. Mark Clements Artistic Director

D R A M AT U R G I C A L Jews, Slaves, and Civil War By Jody Hirsh, Director of Judaic Education, Harry & Rose Family Jewish Community Center
The Jews of America were as divided on the issue of slavery as were Americans in general. Smart philanthropy.
E
stablishing a donor advised philanthropic fund simplifies the process of charitable giving, offers a tax deduction for the gift, and allows you to recommend gifts to the charities of your choice. We manage the fund, handle the record keeping and distribute the gifts. You take the benefits and leave the details to us. Now that’s smart philanthropy.
To learn more, contact Caren Goldberg, Executive Director at 414.390.5737 or careng@milwaukeejewish.org.
