N O T E F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R Dear Theatergoer, When Jenny first approached me about directing JT Rogers’ breathtaking play Madagascar, I knew I had more questions than I had answers about the play. Months later, I still feel the same way. The characters in this play all grapple with untangling mysteries in an attempt to heal (and sometimes punish) themselves. This quest is so infinite that the setting of the play in Rome, above the Piazza di Spagna, is totally fitting- a place where history, religion, and passion collide. They deal in the metaphoric language of mirrors and statues; Mexico and Madagascar. And for all its poetry, all its beauty, and all its pain, the play has asked something far simpler and far more difficult of me: it has asked me to remain unbiased. It has asked me to accept gray area. It has asked me to question things I may have accepted before entering the theater. It has asked me to listen. Kimberly Senior Director

PROFILES Carmen Roman* (Lilian) This is Carmen’s first production at The Next Theater. Kimberly Senior (Director) returns to Next where she previously directed The Overwhelming (also by JT Rogers) and The Busy World is Hushed and is an Artistic Associate. Most recently, she directed The North Plan (Steppenwolf ); Thieves Like Us (House Theatre); Mauritius (TheaterSquared in Fayetteville, AR). Kimberly has also directed the critically acclaimed productions of Uncle Vanya (Strawdog), The Pillowman (RedTwist), and All My Sons (TimeLine). She is the founder of Collaboraction, where she directed and/or produced over 30 plays, most notably the company’s lauded Sketchbook festival for seven years. She is adjunct faculty at DePaul University, Columbia College and the University of Chicago. Kimberly also serves as an Artistic Associate with Strawdog Theater,

She is the recipient of the 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award. www.kimberlysenior.net Nancy Staiger* (Production Stage Manager) is pleased to be returning for her second season as Next Theatre’s Resident Production Stage Manager. Previous productions with Next Theatre include Boom, End Days, Return to Haifa and War With The Newts. Before moving to the Chicago area, Nancy served as the Resident Production Stage Manager at Laguna Playhouse, a LORT theatre in Southern California. Of the nearly forty productions stage managed there, favorites include: The Romance of Magno Rubio, The Woman in Black, American Buffalo, Rounding Third,The Shape of Things, Shear Madness, Forever Plaid, Always Patsy Cline (with Sally Struthers) and the Playhouse produced national tours of Copenhagen, and The Belle of Amherst (with Julie Harris). Nancy moved to Chicago to be with family, enjoy the “great weather” and participate in exciting theatre. So far there are no regrets! J.T. Rogers (Playwright) work in Chicago includes The Overwhelming (Next Theatre) and White People (The Gift Theatre). This season his play Blood and Gifts was his second to premiere at the Royal National Theatre, London. Roger’s plays have been seen across London, where he was one of the authors of the Olivier Award-nominated The Great Game (Tricycle Theatre), and on a UKwide tour with Out of Joint. His works have been staged in New York City at the Roundabout Theatre, commercially Off Broadway, and as part of the SPF Play Festival, as well as in Israel, Germany, Australia, Canada, and throughout the United States. He is a resident playwright at New Dramatists, a member of the Dramatists Guild, and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Upcoming: Blood and Gifts at Lincoln Center Theatre. Jackson C. Haywood (Dramaturg) is thrilled to be working with Next Theatre for the first time. Christopher Kriz (Sound Designer) works nationally as a composer and sound designer. He is the assistant lighting supervisor at The Goodman, and a proud ensemble member of the Strawdog Theatre Company. Last summer he received a Jeff Award for Strawdog’s St. Crispin’s Day, and he most recently designed The Iliad directed by Steve Wilson at A Red Orchid Theatre. Jim Manganello (Assistant Director) graduated from the University of Michigan in 2009, where he directed Richard II, The Goat or Who is Sylvia?,
P R O F I L E S ( c o n t .) and Measure for Measure. He assistant directed The Cabinet (2010) at Redmoon and is currently an Artistic Intern at Remy Bumppo. Jenny Avery (Artistic Director) has been an Artistic Associate with Next for the past five years and performed in a number of Next productions, including The Love Song of J. Robert Oppenheimer, The Long Christmas Ride Home and most recently, War with the Newts. Jenny brings a rich experience in arts administration, having served as Development Director and Managing Director for Roadworks Productions, the Director of Education at American Theater Company, and the assistant to the Executive Director of the Harris Music and Dance Theater. She is an Associate Artistic Director of Strawdog Theatre Company, where she has been a company member for the past 11 years.
Jim Davis (Producing Director) joined the Next Theatre Company staff in 2006 as Production Manager, a position he held until this last summer when he became the Producing Director. Jim has several hundred productions on his resume that span over 25 years in show business, working here in Chicago, St. Louis, New York and on tour in off-Broadway, regional, stock, industrials, festivals and trade shows. Jim relocated to the Chicagoland area in the fall of 2006 from St. Louis, Missouri where he served as the Managing Director of St. Louis Shakespeare. As a freelancer here in Chicago he recently completed his third season as the Production/ Stage Manager of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Welcome Yule! at Orchestra Hall. Jim is very thankful for the very talented and dedicated group of theatre professionals who have joined he and Jenny on this 30th anniversary journey. Amy C. Buckler, (Audience Services Manager) re-joins the Next Theatre Company staff after starting her Chicago career as their intern in 2007. Amy has worked in marketing and development with About Face Theatre, Broadway in Chicago, the American Music Theatre Project, and the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre where she also managed their ‘09-’10 telemarketing campaign. Additionally, Amy worked with The NeoFuturists on their annual Pride benefit production. Amy graduated from Northwestern University where she served as the Artistic Director of Spectrum Theatre Company. Amy also recently directed the world premier of Vincent’s Yellow (Serendipity) and with 20% Chicago Theatre’s Snapshots Festival. Patrick Fries (Production Manager) is thrilled to be working with Next Theatre once again. Pat has worked with Next on The UN Inspector, Dying City, Boom, End Days and War With the Newts. Previous credits include These Shining Lives, The Walls, Mary’s Wedding and 26 Miles (Rivendell Theatre Ensemble); Generic Latina 2010 and Lunatic(a)s (Teatro Luna); and Welcome Yule!
