The Marx Brothers and I first met when I choreographed THE COCOANUTS back in 1991 and I remember being surprised by the smart, clever and enormously zany comedy. My appreciation continued to grow while working on ANIMAL CRACKERS, ROOM SERVICE and A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE, all which featured the brothers in all their songs, dances, sketches and general craziness. But it was so very different from the Groucho Marx I knew form YOU BET YOUR LIFE on 1950’s television. And therein lays the beauty of GROUCHO: A LIFE IN REVUE. In this smartly crafted rags-to-riches story we not only get all the “good stuff,” we find out how it all came to be in its various incarnations. And we get a wonderful close-up of Groucho, Julius Marx, in all his life roles as brother, husband, father and leader of the pack. It’s a trip into the making of a true comic genius and all the stops along the way are a source of delight. Early in the show, Groucho says: “Mom decided that since we weren’t good for anything else she’d put us in show business.” Thanks, Minnie Marx, from the bottom of our hearts. Enjoy. Pam Kriger

BIOGR APHIES ARTHUR MARX (Book, lyrics & music) Since getting out of the service after World War II, in 1945, Arthur Marx has enjoyed a prolific writing career, both as an individual, and as a collaborator. With Robert Fisher he has co-authored THE IMPOSSIBLE YEARS, which starred Alan King and ran for 645 performances on Broadway; MINNIE’S BOYS, THE STORY OF THE YOUNG MARX BROTHERS, starring Shelley Winters; MY DAUGHTER’S RATED X, a comedy that won the Straw Hat award in 1970 for The Best Play of the Summer Season; GROUCHO: A LIFE IN REVUE; and the libretto for the musical, THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR. By himself, Arthur Marx has written eight successful books: THE ORDEAL OF WILLIE BROWN (a novel); LIFE WITH GROUCHO (a biography of his father); NOT AS A CROCODILE (a collection of short stories); SON OF GROUCHO (an autobiography); EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY SOMETIME – ESPECIALLY HIMSELF (the story of Martin & Lewis); GOLDWYN (a biography of the film mogul); RED SKELTON (a biography of the comedian) and THE NINE LIVES OF MICKEY ROONEY. ROBERT FISHER (Book, lyrics & music) Robert Fisher has enjoyed a prolific writing career. With his partner, Arthur Marx, he co-authored the Broadway hits THE IMPOSSIBLE YEARS and MINNIE’S BOYS. He also co-authored with Mr. Marx four screen plays for Bob Hope films. His work with Mr. Marx, GROUCHO: A LIFE IN REVUE, is more than fitting, since it was Groucho Marx who gave Fisher his first job on Groucho’s “Pabst Blue Ribbon” radio show, when the latter was only 19 years old. Mr. Fisher has been awarded the Emmy, Sylvania and St. Christopher awards. His first book, THE KNIGHT IN THE RUSTY ARMOR, was published in 1987.

During his 26-year Milwaukee residency, he has acted with many of its professional companies, and has proudly served as Producing Artistic Director for Milwaukee’s Next Act Theatre for 22 years. David has directed many Next Act productions; favorites among these are THE Groucho: A Life In Revue
