PROGRAM NOTES FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Oscar Wilde wrote, “The Irish have an abiding sense of tragedy which sustains them through temporary periods of joy.” And at the center of Chapatti, our new play by Galway playwright Christian O’Reilly, is a deep and aching sense of yearning; yearning for completion, for belonging, and for the need to be wanted. Christian’s play is unusual in structure yet accessible in theme, a rueful chortle of a piece with a wink of a tearful eye. Perhaps that sense of yearning is our central characters’ bonds with their pets. Perhaps that is the connection many pet owners have when they find themselves without partners or children and still have the need for completion and union, unconditional love and commitment without any of the thorny entanglements a human relationship demands. That sense of yearning is two-sided, and in the case of Dan, Chapatti’s owner, there is an overcast of despair, gloom, and fatalism born of his own self-delusion. In the case of Betty, the bubbly cat wrangler, there is a resilient gleam of hope and determination. Her joy in life is what attracts people towards her and out from under their cloud. We all are looking for that partner that takes our hand and walks us out into the sun, whether they are on two legs or four.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Another World Premiere. This World Premiere production of Chapatti by Irish playwright Christian O‘Reilly has its roots in the nearly 40 years of theater at Northlight. Producing new work has been an important component of Northlight’s long history, none more significant than our 2001 World Premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s musical The Last Five Years, which featured a young Norbert Leo Butz and Lauren Kennedy. But since 2007, through our new plays development initiative Interplay, we have accelerated Northlight’s influence on American theater by working with playwrights at all stages of their career and moving their works to production - playwrights such as Melanie Marnich, Rajiv Joseph, Craig Wright, Larry Gelbart, Katori Hall, and Bruce Graham. PROGRAM NOTES new plays included in Interplay, 25 have gone on to full productions on American stages with seven having world premieres on the Northlight stage, and two more scheduled for next season. That, if I must say, is an extraordinary accomplishment. Most impressively, three of those world premieres have been presented to international audiences at the prestigious Galway Arts Festival in Ireland. This on-going collaboration between Northlight and Galway has culminated with Chapatti, our fourth premiere represented at the Festival and our first international co-production. Â Joining with Galway has allowed us to meld artists from America and Ireland and create a true international partnership for this beautiful new play. Creating and developing new work is hard and fraught with failure. It takes a certain level of determination and risk in order to navigate the passage of ideas and words into actions and emotions. Fearlessness and trust are key ingredients, and we at Northlight are proud to have the faith of our supporters and audiences in our attempts to create something extraordinary.

When you write a play, you often find yourself hoping for a certain outcome. The bottom line is that you want it produced. But this doesn’t always come to pass. A play can lie on the shelf and never find a stage. But some projects won’t give up. They keep pulling at your sleeve or poking you in the ribs. They have stubborn, dogged personalities. I first tried writing Chapatti as a short film script and then as a radio play, but somehow I felt unsatisfied – or maybe it did. It kept poking me in the ribs and telling me I hadn’t figured out how to write it yet. I started to feel that it needed an audience that could share the experience together. And so I tried writing it as a stage play, initially using interweaving monologues and then, as it developed, I added some interaction between the two central characters, Dan and Betty. The fact that both Dan and Betty live alone – and, indeed, are lonely – suggested to me that I had finally stumbled upon the right form for this story: one in which they each get to tell their tale to an audience that is willing to listen. I sent the play out. It came back and I revised it. I sent it out again. I continued to believe in it, knowing it had something. Trusted friends and readers – including the Town Hall Playwrights’ Group - gave me excellent feedback. But I became distracted by other projects and it went back on the shelf. 6

And then it started poking me again. I started thinking about John Mahoney in the part of Dan. He is an actor who transmits great humanity to his characters, one who can be tender, curmudgeonly, and funny at the same time – exactly what I wanted for Dan. He has starred in many great productions in Galway during many Galway Arts Festivals. He was starring in one – Northlight’s production of Bruce Graham’s magnificent The Outgoing Tide (2011) – when I got the notion to drop a copy of the play to him at the Town Hall. I texted my wife, Ailbhe. ‘Am I crazy?’ I asked. She replied right away, ‘What have you got to lose?’ Three months later, John Mahoney emailed me to say he wanted to do the play. A week later BJ Jones called and said Northlight wanted me to come over for a public reading as part of their Interplay Series. I came over in November 2012 and, before an enthusiastic audience of 200 people, I saw John Mahoney and Penny Slusher bring the characters beautifully to life. I continued to develop the play with the superb input of BJ Jones and Kristin Leahey and now ... well now here we are. Every project has a personality. Some are more dogged than others. PROGRAM NOTES NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT AT NORTHLIGHT

Chapatti marks the seventh play that has gone on from Northlight’s Interplay Reading Series to full production in a Northlight mainstage season. Continue reading for more about this innovative series that is the cornerstone of Northlight’s New Play Development program. There is nothing quite like being in the audience as a play is performed for the first time – hearing it come to life and getting behind-the-scenes insight from the playwright, the director, and the actors. Providing audiences the opportunity to witness a part of the evolutionary process from initial idea to full theatrical production is the mission of the Interplay Reading Series at Northlight Theatre. Since its inception in 2006, Interplay has presented exciting new works by American and international playwrights and granted audiences a glimpse into the critical stages of early play development. The series helps Northlight learn about emerging writers and artists and further solidify relationships between artists and the theatre, while serving as an important development step for many of the plays before they move on to full productions. In preparation for the Interplay presentations, the director, dramaturg, and cast rehearse for one or two days, where many important questions and ideas are raised about the continued development of the play. As of winter 2014, Interplay has supported the development of 30 new plays, 28 of which have been included in the Reading Series, and 25 of which have gone on to full productions at Northlight, in Chicago, and around the country. Three have continued to international acclaim at Ireland’s Galway Arts Festival. From Interplay, Northlight has fully produced many important works you have seen on our stage, including Lady by Craig Wright (2007), Po Boy Tango by Kenneth Lin (2007), Better Late by Larry Gelbart and Craig Wright (2009), The Outgoing Tide by Bruce Graham (2011), Ten Chimneys 8

Next season, Northlight will produce White Guy on the Bus by Bruce Graham, which was showcased at Interplay this past fall. We will also produce Shining Lives, a new musical, with book & lyrics by Jessica Thebus and music by Andre Pluess & Amanda Dehnert. The work is based on the play These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich, a Northlight commission and one of the first works presented at Interplay in 2007. The staggering success rate of the series has established Interplay as a valuable incubator for new work in the American theatre, and combined with the nearly 40 world premieres produced by Northlight in our 39-year history, has helped cement Northlight’s national reputation as an important contributor to the American theatrical canon. Northlight Executive Director Tim Evans and Galway Artistic Director Paul Fahy K: What is your process for selecting work for the Galway Arts Festival? P: The Galway Arts Festival is interdisciplinary, and while we don’t operate on a thematic basis, sometimes themes do emerge. From an artistic director’s point of view and seeing other festivals around the world, the festivals that have the greatest personality and identity contain an element of new work. I think you have to take risks and to try things that are new. Not everything is necessarily going to work—you hope that it will—but it’s great to be able to offer artists that sort of a platform, a lab if you like, to create something new for our audiences. So that’s something that always excites me. For example, we’re doing a new play with Enda Walsh this year specifically tailored for the festival. K: How many countries are you usually working with for the festival? P: It varies greatly, though it’s very international. We do work from all over the continent, from America, Australia, all over Europe, and of course a lot of work from Ireland and our neighbor Britain. Obviously, we do tend to do a lot of English language-based material. We have a strong connection to Chicago through Northlight, more recently, as

well as through Steppenwolf Theatre and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Chicago’s been a great place to look for work to share with our audiences. We also have a strong relationship with companies in Australia. I tend to find Australia incredibly good at physical training, so you get a lot of good work that’s dance-based or physically led or traditionally Australian. And I would say the same for Canada, in particular Montreal. With music, we bring artists from all over the world. We have a great audience for world music and traditional music and classical music, similarly for the visual arts. Our programming represents works from the five continents. Artists are very much at the heart of what we do, but audiences are the heart of the festival. We try for programming that can reach as wide and diverse an audience as possible. We don’t strictly program for young audiences that are trendy or just a theater-going audience or whatever, but we’re interested in having a festival for everybody. I’ve always had a great belief that the standards you showcase should be as high as possible, and you don’t need to lower the bar in order to make things accessible. But we open the door for everybody to enter, so we try to encourage people who have never been to festival before to just try one event. I think because the program is so diverse that people are fascinated by Galway’s reputation for presenting things in unusual ways. One of our venues is called the Big Tent that holds three and half thousand people, so we’ve moved that to the middle of town, and it’s become a kind of visual icon of Galway, which people are fascinated by. We offer a large amount of our programming for free. Galway is a small city with only 80,000 people, but the nature of the streets and the shape of the city really frames the festival. Galway Arts Festival you were blindfolded and dropped in from Mars on the main thoroughfare of Galway, you would know there was a cultural festival taking place. Then you’d walk around the corner and see some outdoor installation in visual art or street performance, so that makes the arts accessible to everybody. And that’s going to excite people, and we’re going to see the impact that has on everyday life. I think that the festival impacts a lot of us culturally and socially, but Galway sees the economic impact as well, through the tourist economy. It becomes the heartbeat of city life. We make attending the festival as easy as possible. And that’s how we’ve seen our audience develop and grow. 50% of our audience is from Galway and approximately 25% are from the rest of Ireland. And the remaining 25% are international, and a lot of them come specifically for the festival. Between our free events and all of our paid events, last year, in 2013, over 165,000 engaged or embraced the festival in some way, so that’s a lot of different people looking at very different forms of art in a two week period of time. We hope to keep them for life – that’s our approach.

high-end productions. Great direction. And particularly with Northlight, the connection with John Mahoney is wonderful. When BJ sent me The Outgoing Tide by Bruce Graham I loved the play and was so taken by what a great director BJ was with the piece. I thought that the play in less able hands could’ve been schmaltzy. But it was not sentimental. All the emotion came from the audience. And that’s such a fine line. I’ve always enjoyed chatting with BJ about plays or his work as an actor. And then last year, the whole thing came about with Christian, when Northlight performed at the festival with Stella & Lou. I’ve known the playwright Christian O’Reilly for a long time. He’s seen Northlight’s work, and was impressed, obviously, and he’s a big fan of John Mahoney. We have a terrific relationship, terrific partnership, and terrific friendship with Northlight. So it just seems like a natural progression that the next big step would be to make something together with Chapatti.

K: Can you characterize the relationship that the program has had with Northlight? P: I’ve been a fan of American drama for a long, long time. With the companies we’ve brought in I’ve seen good quality, 12

PROFILES JR LEDERLE (Lighting Design) Northlight credits include Detroit ‘67, The Odd Couple, Ten Chimneys, Season’s Greetings, A Life, Grey Gardens, The Retreat From Moscow, Lady, Stella & Lou, The Outgoing Tide, and Better Late (the last three also at the Galway Arts Festival, Ireland). Other work has been seen at Lookingglass, Victory Gardens, About Face, Remy Bumppo, Writers, Steppenwolf, and Walkabout. JR designed lighting for seven years of the Steppenwolf Traffic Series, and five Steppenwolf performances in Chicago’s Millennium Park. He has served as head of the Lighting Department at Steppenwolf since 1995. DENIS CLOHESSY (Composer & Sound Design) has produced work for theatre and dance with the Abbey, Gate, Rough Magic, Fishamble, Corn Exchange, Junk Ensemble, and many others. He won the Irish Times theatre award for Best Design Sound in 2011, was an associate artist with the Abbey in 2008, and was a participant on Rough Magic’s ADVANCE programme in 2012. He has

also composed extensively for film and television including The Irish Pub, His and Hers, The Reluctant Revolutionary, and the television series The Limits of Liberty performed by the RTE Concert Orchestra. KRISTIN LEAHEY, Ph. D. (Dramaturg) is the Resident Dramaturg at Northlight and formerly the Literary Manager at A Red Orchid and Woolly Mammoth in Washington, DC. She has worked with Goodman, The Kennedy Center, Indiana Repertory, Cleveland Play House, Victory Gardens, The Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, Collaboraction, Teatro Luna, Teatro Vista, Steep, Eclipse, Redmoon, Next, and A Red Orchid. Leahey received her M.A. from Northwestern and her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin. Her publications include articles in Theatre Topics, Theatre History, and Theatre Studies, and she has taught at Columbia College, University of Chicago, and at DePaul University. She is an Artistic Associate at Steep Theatre Company, and this year’s artist-in-residence at Weber State.

GLENN (Production Stage Manager) Over the past twelve years with Northlight, production stage management credits include The Whipping Man, The Odd Couple, Ten Chimneys, Season’s Greetings, Sense & Sensibility, A Life, Souvenir, Better Late (also at the Galway Arts Festival), Retreat from Moscow, Permanent Collection, Cat Feet, Blue/ Orange, Tuesdays with Morrie, Sky Girls, Rounding Third, and A Skull in Connemara. Laura has been a proud member of Actors Equity Association for twenty-four years. TIMOTHY J. EVANS (Executive Director) Prior to his arrival at Northlight Theatre in 2007, Tim spent over 20 years at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in management and producing positions. He created, curated and produced Steppenwolf’s acclaimed TRAFFIC Series including a partnership with Chicago Public Radio for subsequent broadcasts. Tim founded Steppenwolf Films, of which he is still a partner with Gary Sinise, Terry Kinney, and Jeff Perry, to develop film and television projects. He produced the feature films Diminished Capacity with Matthew Broderick (premiered 2008 Sundance Film Festival) and The Last Rites of Joe May with Dennis Farina (premiered 2011 Tribeca Film Festival). Recently, Tim cofounded the Three Oaks Theater Festival in Three Oaks, Michigan, which had its inaugural season this past summer. He currently serves on the board of the League of Chicago Theatres and on the theater selection panel for the Princess Grace Foundation Awards. Previously, Tim served on the board of

the Independent Film Project (IFP) and was a charter member of the Governor’s Task Force for Media Development. GALWAY ARTS FESTIVAL (CoProducer) Founded in 1978, Galway Arts Festival is one of Europe’s leading international arts festivals and one of Ireland’s annual flagship cultural events. The Festival celebrates the very best of the performing and visual arts from Ireland and around the world. Galway Arts Festival has presented many leading international theatre and dance companies including The National Theatre of Great Britain, Royal Court Theatre, Michael Clark Dance Company; Hofesh Shechter Dance Company and the National Theatre of Scotland, (UK); Northlight Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Stephen Petronio Dance Company, New York Theatre Workshop, and Hubbard Street Dance (USA); Canada’s Robert Lepage; Australia’s Circa, and works regularly with leading Irish companies including Galway’s Druid Theatre Company. In recent years the Festival has presented the work of seminal artists across art forms including Joni Mitchell, Bill Viola, Henri Matisse, Georg Grosz, Josef Albers, David Byrne, T Bone Burnett, Glen Hansard, Sir Peter Hall, Cormac McCarthy, David Hockney, Kronos Quartet, and Philip Glass amongst many others. A major exhibition, The Road, by artist Hughie O’Donoghue, curated by the Festival, recently toured to the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, Prague. In 2012, there were 163,548 attendances at 160 performances, talks, and exhibitions in 27 venues over 14 days. The Festival has consolidated its reputation nationally and internationally and continues to develop its profile through the international media and attracts 27% of its audience from abroad. It has developed a profile within the ‘festival world’ where it now is viewed as operating on an international circuit, with a reputation equal to that of much larger international festivals.
