BIOGRAPHIES PRESIDENT AND DIRECTORS Much of the Choir’s success is due to the dedication, talent, and vision of its leaders. Choir presidents, music directors, organists, announcers, and staff over the years have shaped the massive organization. Ron Jarrett, Choir President Ron Jarrett was appointed president of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on August 1, 2012. He served as a singing member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir from 1999 to 2008 and for three years as an assistant to the Choir president. As president, he manages operations, staff, and marketing of the Choir organization and oversees the administrative components of the Choir. A retired educator, he was a teacher for 12 years and an elementary school principal for 22 years and has undergraduate and graduate degrees from Brigham Young University and a postgraduate certificate from the University of Utah. He and his wife, Lucie, are the parents of three children and have four grandchildren. Mack Wilberg, Music Director Mack Wilberg was appointed music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on March 28, 2008, having served as associate music director since May 1999. Dr. Wilberg is responsible for all musical and creative aspects of the Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square in rehearsals, concerts, tours, and recordings, as well as the weekly broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word. He is a former professor of music at Brigham Young University and is active as a composer, arranger, guest conductor, and clinician throughout the United States and abroad. His compositions and arrangements, currently published exclusively by Oxford University Press, are performed and recorded by choral 6

organizations throughout the world. Dr. Wilberg received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Southern California. He and his wife, Rebecca, are the parents of four children and have one granddaughter. Ryan Murphy, Associate Music Director Ryan Murphy was appointed associate music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 2009. In addition to assisting the music director, Dr. Murphy also serves as the conductor of the Temple Square Chorale, the preparatory ensemble for new singers in Choir service. He holds degrees in piano and organ performance and choral conducting from Brigham Young University and a doctorate in choral conducting from Boston University, where he studied with Dr. Ann Howard Jones. With extensive choral conducting and professional musical theater experience, he has directed choirs at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Walnut Hill School for the Arts and has been associated with the Tanglewood Summer Festival. He and his wife, Jennifer, have four children. ANNOUNCER
Lloyd D. Newell Lloyd D. Newell has been the announcer and principal writer for Music and the Spoken Word since 1990. He has worked as a television news anchor, professional speaker and seminar leader, and university professor and is the author of numerous books and articles. He received a master’s degree in communications and a doctoral degree in marriage, family, and human development from Brigham Young University, where he is on the faculty. He and his wife, Karmel, are the parents of four children.

Richard Elliott A native of Baltimore, Maryland, and student at the Peabody Conservatory and the Catholic University of America, Richard Elliott earned a bachelor of music degree from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and master’s and doctoral degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. A former assistant organist for Philadelphia’s famed Wanamaker organ, he currently sits on the advisory boards for the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ and the Eccles Organ Festival at Salt Lake City’s Cathedral of the Madeleine. Prior to his appointment as Tabernacle organist in 1991, he was an assistant professor of organ at Brigham Young University. He and his wife, pianist Elizabeth Cox Ballantyne, are the parents of two sons. Andrew Unsworth Andrew Unsworth, a Tabernacle organist since 2007, was raised in Potsdam, New York, in a family of musicians. He received a bachelor of music degree in organ performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University and went on to receive master’s and doctoral degrees in performance practice from Duke University. He has served as music director at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Durham, North Carolina, organist and assistant director of music at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City, and assistant professor of music history and organ at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was a featured soloist at the Organ Historical Society and the American Guild of Organists in 2003. He and his wife, Alison, are the parents of five children.
ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF Scott Barrick, General Manager Scott Barrick became general manager of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in November 2001. His duties include overseeing marketing, website, social media, public relations, the Choir’s recording label, concerts, guest artists, and legal affairs. He has over 30 years of business experience and has worked for several Fortune 500 companies. He received his bachelor’s degree in Italian from Brigham Young University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Shauna, have three children and one granddaughter. Barry Anderson, Administrative Manager Barry Anderson joined the Choir’s administrative staff in December 2001. He oversees the budgeting and financial operations of the Choir and management needs of the Orchestra at Temple Square. He schedules and coordinates events and handles the complex logistic plans for tours. A graduate of the University of Utah, he spent 26 years working for a large food distributor as director of human resources, director of sales and marketing, and division president. He and his wife, Becky, have four sons, three granddaughters, and two grandsons.

A TRADITION OF SINGING In the summer of 1847 a company of trail-weary settlers streamed into the Salt Lake Valley intent on establishing a community“far away in theWest”with a love of God and His teachings at its heart. Amidst the planning,planting,andplowing,theyheldSundayservicesandarag-tagchorusgatheredunderacrudebrush bowery to sing praises to the Almighty. In the years ahead, these religious folk were joined by believers from the east and across the Atlantic—England, Denmark, Sweden, and, in particular, Wales. These pioneers brought with them their remarkable choral tradition. At a performance in London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1998, Choir members who could trace their ancestors to British soil were asked to stand. A majority got to their feet. What began with a small choir singing in the sagebrush now reaches across the world with recordings, tours, broadcasts, and connections on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and email. Music has been a centerpiece of worship for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since its founding on April 6, 1830. Early hymnals gathered Christian favorites and many other hymns written for what their first prophet, Joseph Smith, called “the cause of Christ.” Being a religious entity, the Choir has a purpose beyond good music sung in tune with appropriate, even exemplary, expression. Its mission is to share the love of Jesus Christ, His truths, and His Spirit with all who listen. The essence of its message is “Rejoice, the Lord Is King.” The Tabernacle on Temple Square Choirs sang at the dedication of the Church’s temple in Kirtland, Ohio, and in services in Nauvoo, Illinois, as these Saints, as they called themselves, were forced to resettle again and again. In 1852 the early choirs of the Salt Lake Valley became known as the Salt LakeTabernacle Choir, a name taken from the modest one-story adobe tabernacle used by the Church for 15 years. Second Church President and prophet Brigham Young commissioned the present Salt LakeTabernacle to serve as a center for spreading God’s truths in both music and word. It has been the home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir since 1867. The magnificent Tabernacle organ has stood as the focal point of this grand structure, whose recognizable dome creates spectacular acoustics befitting the music within. On Tour The Mormon Tabernacle Choir performed for the first time outside the Tabernacle on March 6, 1862. It has been touring ever since. The Choir has performed from coast to coast in North America and most major cities and music festivals in between. Newspapers described the Choir’s first trip to Europe in 1955 as“a smash hit,”and subsequent visits have produced similar accolades in Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe including Russia, and Israel. The Choir has sung at the opening of the 2002 Winter Olympics and for six U.S. presidents. Today the Choir keeps an aggressive extended-tour schedule, going out on the road every two years. Music and the Spoken Word The Choir can’t reach everyone in person, but its weekly program, Music and the Spoken Word, can. For 85 years, nearly the lifetime of radio, the program has been a phenomenon of broadcasting, the longest running broadcast on the air. This program has been inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the National Radio Hall of Fame and into the hearts of listeners everywhere.What began with one microphone, an announcer perched on a ladder, and a signal transmitted to 30 stations is now carried to the world through radio, television, cable, Internet, and YouTube. All Volunteers In 1999 the Choir added the Orchestra atTemple Square to its family, along with theTemple Square Chorale and the Choir’s training school. A handbell choir, Bells on Temple Square, was organized in 2005. As in the Choir, all members of the auxiliary organizations are volunteers. Choir members can serve 20 years or to age 60, whichever comes first. Take a Bow The Choir has drawn into its circle many guest artists who have participated in special programs including Renée Fleming, Bryn Terfel, Frederica von Stade, The King’s Singers, Angela Lansbury, Alfie Boe, Nathan Gunn, Katherine Jenkins, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald, Natalie Cole, Sissel, and David Archuleta; conductors Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, and John Williams; and narrators Tom Brokaw, Walter Cronkite, David McCullough, Jane Seymour, Michael York, Claire Bloom, Edward Herrmann, Charles Osgood, and Mike Wallace.
