December 2009 – January 2010 t h e e a r l b i to y s e r i e s A few years ago we were approached by a friend who wanted to do something to help Open Door and also honor the memory of Earl Bitoy. Earl taught in the Oak Park schools from the early 1970’s through the mid 1980’s before moving to the Oak Brook school system. Earl was one of those teachers every parent hoped their child would get. And that every student knew would be one of the best they would ever have. He taught from his heart. He believed to his core that every child could and would learn and, in his classroom, they did. In the early 1990’s Earl won the Illinois State Lottery. To Earl, this windfall was not about his personal financial security but was a way for him to give even more. He established a fund with the Chicago Community Trust. He opened a Tutoring/ Mentoring center where any student who needed help could come free of charge. He paid college tuitions for former students when they fell on hard times, only asking that they “pay it forward.” He gave fully of himself and his resources until the day he died. Earl’s life exemplified his deeply rooted belief “that we are our brother’s keeper.” That belief is at the heart of Superior Donuts. Open Door is proud to produce this wonderful script in honor of a man who lived every day believing in the redemptive power of friendship and in our responsibility for each other

o p e n i n g j u ly 12 , 2 013 CLARA by McKinley Johnson Musical July 12 – August 18 (F, Sa, Su) This new musical by McKinley Johnson is inspired by true events in the life of Clara Ward of the famed Clara Ward Singers. Clara, driven by her mother’s reckless ambition, finds herself between her dreams and her mother’s goals. Amid this never-ending pressure, Clara becomes an icon of gospel music but finally must break the bond of mother and daughter permanently…to find her own peace. Familiar to many gospel aficionados, Clara has such favorites as, “How I Got Over” and “Surely, Surely He is Able”. In addition, are new toe-tapping musical theatre numbers entitled, “I Got A Plan”, “The Chocolate Shakes,” and “Tomorrow.” Filled with deep rich characters living in the forties, fifties and sixties, a time of great change for women and African-Americans, Clara goes directly to the heart of the struggle between family and personal ambition.
