PRODUCTION NOTES INTO THE WOODS is a Tony Award winning musical, brilliantly conceived by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine as a moving and profound exploration of what happens after “happily ever after.” The show’s sophisticated artistry leads the audience on a journey to the darker side of fairy tales as they explore the pain of growing up, communal responsibility, and the values that we pass on to our children. This is the third time that Pius XI High School Performing Arts has taken this journey. The full, main stage version was presented in 1996, and the junior version was presented in 2008. It is our very great honor to welcome the alumni from these past productions as honored guests. We have enjoyed re-connecting with them and their families. One of the main themes of “Into the Woods” is the relationship between parents and children. It is interesting to note that many of the students in the 1996 production have since grown up to become parents with children of their own. One of the great privileges of teaching in the arts is watching young 14-18 year old children stretch into roles that offer them glimpses of the adults that they will one day become. I am sure our esteemed alumni could still jump in to many of these roles, portraying them with the extra depth and wisdom that comes from age and experience. If an alumnus joined our cast, they would find many things the same. They would experience a deep level of commitment, hard work, mental and physical discipline and a disposition for achieving professional levels of excellence that is a long standing tradition of our school. They would also bear witness to a talented group of individuals who proudly carry on the legacy of their past, while achieving new successes, exploring new paths and taking new journeys. And so, we proudly present “Into the Woods” and leave you with the inimitable words of Steven Sondheim: “Be ready for the journey!” CAST LIST Narrator..............................................................................................................................Mr. Rick Carpenter Cinderella.........................................Gabriella Klotz (April 4, 6, 12), Matisen Ardis (April 5, 11, 13) Jack.............................................................................................................................................
