ABOUT MEET JOHN DOE In only the second full production ever staged, Porchlight Music Theatre brings the awardwinning talents of Andrew Gerle and Eddie Sugarman to Chicago for the first time. Meet John Doe is the recipient of a 2006 Jonathan Larson Award given for new works in musical theatre. Its premiere production at the Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. garnered seven Helen Hayes Award nominations. It had a featured reading at the NAMT (National Alliance for Musical Theatre) Festival in New York City, and a production at Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. The critics have raved about this show, including…. “Politics, passion and populism ignite the stage in the tuneful musical Meet John Doe.” – The Baltimore Sun “…the work is a rewarding platform for a pair of talented young songwriters…” – The Washington Post “…this is one of the best new musicals in years and definitely deserves a wider audience.” – The Examiner
D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E Frank Capra spent a good part of his formative years traveling the country, immersing himself in unlikely American communities made up of individuals. In this world, civility came from the knowledge of one’s smallness within the American collage. As joblessness and landlessness created the American vagrant in the 1930s, the concurrent rise of photojournalism, radio and film began to define the American community through shared media rather than location for the first time. Capra understood that anyone controlling mass media could control the new American community, and his work turned political. His films and heroes were of a world in which progressive politics and human connection triumphed over media, corporations and corrupt government. Critics faulted him for simplification and sentimentality, but—like Ann in Meet John Doe—he was attempting to amplify the voice of individual without cynicism by using the tools of mass media. Seventy years after the film premiered, we still struggle with this paradox. We continue to seek meaning in the role we play in a larger social enterprise, hopefully remembering that our individual truth is only a small fragment in the ever changing American collage. - James Beaudry

C O M I N G T H I S S P R I N G TO P O R C H L I G H T The King and I April 22–June 5 By Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II Based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon As America fights its civil war, Anna, an English widow, sails to Bangkok with her young son to tutor the wives and children of the King of Siam. The King wishes Siam to have a larger role on the world stage while simultaneously maintaining its traditions and he increasingly turns to Anna for assistance. Featuring such classics as “Shall We Dance?” and “Getting to Know You”, The King and I is the story of a man and a woman with matching intelligence and strength, but clashing personalities, prejudices and politics.
