N o t e f r o m t h e d i r e c to r I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. That’s my hometown. When I was a kid, Pittsburgh was the steel capital and the mills burned all night long. Today the mills are long gone, either razed or converted into high-end condominiums, but when I go back, my memories of those massive steel-firing plants rise up like ghosts of the past and it can take a while to see the place for what it has become. Those of us who grew up in industrial towns all across the Midwest and beyond understand this in our bones. The first time I heard Lisa Dillman’s play out loud was next door in the Rivendell rehearsal space. A bunch of company members gathered around to read it and we practically fell out of our chairs laughing. Then, when it came time to discuss the play, the tone of the room shifted and we talked about going home and the tricks of memory. We talked about family and distance and getting lost along the way. Then we talked about personal reinvention, the delight and the terror of it, and that’s when I jumped in wholeheartedly with this play. I don’t know what signals the end of an economic recession, but I do hear financial analysts talking about how we’re living in a time when all bets are off and the old rules don’t apply. They tell us that the only way forward is to innovate, to create new pathways, and invent new business models. Well, the characters in American Wee-Pie are boldly setting forth with this advice and the journey that unfolds bubbles over in the most life and love and community-affirming tale I’ve heard in a long while. Thank you for being here. It has been a joy to mount this world premiere with such a fine company of actors and designers. We really appreciate your support and we couldn’t do this without neighbors like you. - Megan Carney cast Kurt Brocker (ZED) Once upon a time, Kurt played Horatio in Rivendell’s Hamlet directed by Karen Kessler. He also played Gant in Holy Days, with Tara Mallen playing his sister-in-law. Most recently, Kurt was seen as Donald in Welcome Home Jenny Sutter at Next Theatre. Before that he was in The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later at Redtwist. After American Wee-Pie he will be in the original Chicago Children’s Theatre Co./Redmoon collaboration of The Elephant and the Whale. Other Chicago credits include The Farnsworth Invention with Timeline, Beautiful City with Theatre Mir and Pan and Boone with Running With Scissors for which he received an After Dark Award for his performance. Theatre and Thunder Road Ensemble. Kurt is very happy to be with working with Rivendell again. Jennifer Pompa (Linz) Jennifer Pompa is very excited to be working with Rivendell for the first time. Jennifer is a Factory Theater company member and native Chicagoan. She was most recently seen in Stage Left Theater’s production of Impenetrable, written by Mia McCullough. She also got to revisit some old characters last year in the Factory Theater’s 20th Anniversary remounts of Ren Faire! A Fistful of Ducats and also White Trash Wedding And A Funeral. She has been fortunate to work around town at various theaters including: Eclipse, Visions & Voices, Steppenwolf, and Famous Door Theatre, where she won a Jeff Award for Best Supporting Actress in The Cider House

Most recently, he was seen as Hans, in The Book Thief, at Steppenwolf and in February, will be in the Steppenwolf SYA production of How Long Will I Cry. A Rivendell ensemble member for about five years, his other credits here include Silence; These Shining Lives; and as director of Mary’s Wedding. production tea m Megan Carney (Director) Megan Carney is a company member of Rivendell Theatre Ensemble. With Rivendell, she is a lead artist on the Women and War project and directed The Walls by Lisa Dillman (Steppenwolf Garage). Megan has written and directed many plays based on interviews that explore community, identity, and a sense of place including Open Systems: Hurricane Katrina (Chicago’s Goodman Theatre), Let Them Eat Cake (with Holly Hughes and Moe Angelos at Dixon Place, NYC), Pittsburgh Project Remix (Pump House, Homestead Steel Mill). Megan was the founding director of About Face Youth Theatre where she produced 8 years of original plays (at Victory Gardens, the Goodman, and national tour). Her work has been recognized with multiple After Dark Awards, a TCG Observership Grant, the GLSEN Pathfinder Award, an APA Presidential Citation, induction in Chicago’s Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, a Rockefeller Foundation MAP Grant, and a GLAAD Media Award nomination. Megan is the Director of the Gender and Sexuality Center and adjunct faculty in the Department of Theatre and Music at UIC. She has an MFA in Theatre Arts from Virginia Tech with a focus on Directing and Public Dialogue. Regina Garcia (Scenic Design) Regina is an Illinois-based Scenic Designer and has been designing for drama, ensemble and devised work for fifteen years. She has collaborated with directors Giovanna Sardelli, Daniella Topol, Tara Mallen, Thomas Kail, Victor Maog, Jorge Ali Triana, Michael J. Garces, and Bartlett Sher, amongst others; and designed for renowned Latino theaters including Teatro Vista, Repertorio Español, the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, INTAR, and was the Resident Scenic Designer 6

at Pregones Theater for more than ten years. Recently completed projects include: The Homosexuals by Philip Dawkins for About Face Theatre; Ruined by Lynn Nottage for the St. Louis Black Rep (Kevin Kline nomination); and Crooked by Catherine Trieschmann for Rivendell. Regina is a Fellow of the NEA/TCG Career Development Program for Designers, and recipient of several Princess Grace Awards (2002 & 2011), and a Latino ACE Award for her scenic design. Regina is a company member with Teatro Vista and Rivendell Theatre Ensemble. A graduate from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she is a Faculty member at the University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign. Joanna Iwanicka (Assistant Scenic & Props Designer) Joanna is returning to Rivendell Theater Ensemble, where she has previously designed set and props for WRENS, and properties for Fighting Words, Eliot, A Soldier’s Fugue and Falling: A Wake. She is a Chicago-based scenic, props and puppets designer as well as a resident scenic artist for Northlight Theatre in Skokie. Her local design credits include Chicago Children’s Theatre, Lifeline Theatre, The Division, Vintage Theatre Collective, the Library Theatre, Chopin Theatre and Metropolis Performing Arts Centre. She has also realized shows at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the State Theatrs Department of Puppetry Arts, The Białystok Puppet Theatre, Teatr K3 and Teatr Lalek Arlekin in her native Poland. Carson (Lighting Designer) Jessica is the Production Manager and Resident Lighting Designer with Two Pence Theatre Company. Lauren Lowell (Costume Designer) Lauren M. Lowell is a member of the Design faculty in the Illinois State University School of Theatre. Stephanie Hurovitz (Stage Manager) Stephanie Hurovitz has been stage managing in Chicago since 2003 and she is very happy to have a home with Rivendell Theatre Ensemble. She has stage managed Rivendell’s productions of WRENS; Crooked; Falling: A Wake; Precious Little; Mary’s Wedding; The Walls; These Shining Lives (all four incarnations); and assistant stage managed Rivendell’s coproduction of Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue with Teatro Vista at the Steppenwolf garage. She most recently stage managed Teatro Vista’s world premiere of i put the fear of mexico in ‘em. Rock Shore was presented in the 2003 O’Neill Playwrights Conference. American Wee-Pie was developed in the Goodman Theatre’s inaugural Playwrights Unit, and workshopped in the 2011 PlayPenn Conference and at the William Inge Center. Dillman has developed her plays at theatres across the U.S., including ACT Theatre, Victory Gardens, Huntington Theatre Company, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, The Women’s Project, and many others. She has received commissions from the Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Northlight Theatre, the Chicago Humanities Festival, Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, and Dramatic Publishing Company. She has received two Illinois Arts Council fellowships, the Sprenger-Lang New History Play Prize, the Morton R. Sarett National Playwriting Award, and a Julie Harris–Beverly Hills Theatre Guild Playwright Award. Her plays are published by Samuel French and Dramatic Publishing and anthologized in collections from Smith & Kraus, Heinemann, Playscripts Inc., and New Issues Press. In addition to being a company member and playwright in residence at Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, she is an artistic associate with Route 66 Theatre Company. She was recently selected for the Women Playwrights Festival and granted a Hedgebrook fellowship. She is currently working on Fobbit, a new play about women veterans commissioned by Rivendell. r i v e n d e l l t h e at r e e n s e m b l e : i t ’ s wo m e n ’ s wo r k The world premiere production of American Wee-Pie marks the second production of our 2012-13 “Season of Reinvention” – Rivendell’s first full season in our beautiful new Edgewater home. This past September, we kicked off the season with a revival of our ground-breaking 1996 production of Anne McGravie’s semi-autobiographical play WRENS. The Jeff Recommended production once again had the critics raving: “Wrens soars”...”Highly Recommended!”...“Lovely” ... “Masterful.” In May, we will close out our season with the Chicago premiere of The Electric Baby by Stefanie Zadravec, which I am delighted to be at the helm directing. Three plays written by three women directed by three women, all exploring a common theme of the power of reinvention. It is an irrefutable truth that women theatre artists simply do not have the same opportunities available as their male counterparts. Without a chance to actually work, how do women artists grow, hone their skills, and remain competitive? As Chicago’s ONLY professional theatre company dedicated to women’s voices—and women’s lives—our work is truly vital.
