Welcome to Godspell, the second production in the 2012-2013 Shorewood High School Drama Season! We opened with a rousing production of Lend Me a Tenor in September. Following Godspell, students’ talents really take center stage with Showcase 2013, which runs March 1 and 2. The year will conclude with what will likely be a high school world-premiere, the Tony Award Winning musical Spring Awakening. Tonight’s production has a very special place in my heart. I will give you the short version. In 1986, in the small town of Bluffton, Indiana, I was invited to the school’s spring musical, Godspell. Up until that year, my freshman year of high school, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher, but I didn’t know what I wanted to teach. I attended the Friday night performance with friends. I was mesmerized. I went back on Saturday night, alone, so that no one would talk to me during the show. The next morning, I told my mother that I was going to be a drama teacher. Next year, I quit the basketball and football teams, and joined drama club and show choir so that I could be involved in musicals. Godspell was my inspiration. And yet, I have never been able to direct it before. So, as you can imagine, I really hope that you are pleased with the production, as it has truly been a labor of love for me to direct it. The students have worked hard on perfecting the harmonies and the dance steps for the show. The performance style of this musical is so unique…it has been a wonderful challenge to direct. We have been blessed to have an outstanding, collaborative artistic team to work on this show. Thank you to Mr. Terrasi, Mr. Clark, Mr. Spreadbury, Mrs. Ricci, Mrs. Meyer, and Miss Rhyme! Finally, thank you for your support. The arts are alive and well in Shorewood. Thank you for being an ambassador for arts education in our public schools! Enjoy Godspell! Mr. Joe D.
