D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S Welcome to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the first production in the 2013-2014 Shorewood High School Drama Season! After opening with this delightful, heartwarming musical, we will delve into the difficult Holocaust story, I Never Saw Another Butterfly in February. This powerful play chronicles the experiences of the children at Terezin Concentration camp before, during, and after the war. We will end our main stage season with a rousing production of the classic musical West Side Story in May. Tonight’s musical is simply just a lot of fun. I saw the original production on Broadway, and it truly was a surprising gem. Pre-adolescence is such an awkward time for everyone. The kids in Spelling Bee find that words and spelling can be an escape from the perils of not fitting in. I think you’ll find yourself rooting for one or more of the kids to pull off the victory. What we discover from the adults in the show is that navigating adulthood doesn’t necessarily get any easier! Spelling Bee ran on Broadway from 2005 to 2008 and played 1,136 performances. It won Tony Awards for Best Book (script) and Best Featured Actor (Dan Fogler, who plays William Barfee). I would like to thank the entire artistic staff for their dedicated work on this project... Patrick Spreadbury, Adam Baus, Carrie Hallblade, Ryan Cappleman, Deb Schwinn, and Thom Cauley. If you’d like to become a financial supporter of Shorewood Drama, please contact Mr. King at jking@shorewood.k12.wi.us. The drama program is taking students on two amazing trips this year. The actors will venture to Broadway and New York City to see shows, to participate master classes with working actors, and to see the major sites. The technical theatre students are heading to the USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology) conference in Fort Worth. If you’d like to donate to the cause to get these deserving students to their destinations, we would love to hear from you! Finally, thank you for your support. The arts are alive and well in Shorewood. Thank you for being an ambassador for arts education in our public schools! Enjoy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! Mr. Joe D. King SHS Drama Director

Most productions of Spelling Bee have only nine actors. We added eight ensemble actors to give more students opportunities!

At the 2005 Tony Awards, Rev. Al Sharpton played the role of Guest Speller during Spelling Bee’s musical number!

Spelling Bee started as a non-musical play entitled Julie Andrews missed “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” when she was a Guest Speller at a performance in 2007.
