D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S Welcome to I Never Saw Another Butterfly, the second production in the 2013-2014 Shorewood High School Drama Season! Be sure to check out our SIS production of Mulan in March and the high school production of West Side Story in May! Tonight we tackle difficult subject matter. We are proud to present this heartwrenching story of courage and hope. It is the story of the children of the Holocaust and is based upon real children who passed through the Terezin ghetto. While all students study the Holocaust in school, we decided to go a little deeper. To prepare the students, we had speakers from the Pelz Holocaust Education and Resource Center speak to the cast and crew about the context of the play. Mr. Howard Melton, a Holocaust survivor, presented to the students about his experiences living through the Holocaust. We took the students to Skokie, Illinois to visit the Illinois Holocaust Museum. Finally, we saw the musical Cabaret, which chronicles anti-Semitism in late 1930’s Berlin during the rise of the Nazi party. The following history of Terezin is paraphrased from the forward to the book I Never Saw Another Butterfly. “Terezin served as a fortress to protect Prague from invaders to the north. Joseph II named this village after his mother, Maria Teresia, calling it Terezin. Hitler used Terezin as part of his propaganda machine. The Red Cross was allowed to visit Terezin once. The village of Terezin was spruced up for the occasion. Certain inmates were dressed up and told to stand at strategic places along the specially designated route through Terezin. Shop windows along that carefully guarded path were filled with goods for the day. One young mother remembers seeing the bakery window and shelves suddenly filled with baked goods the inmates had never seen during their time at Terezin. Even the candy shop window overflowed with bon bons creating a fantastic illusion she would never forget. The Red Cross concluded that the Jews were being treated all right. Artists in the camp would steal paper and other supplies with which they produced writings that recorded daily life in Terezin. These artists also stole materials so the children could surreptitiously create works of art. Six thousand drawings were hidden and later successfully retrieved after the war. 15,000 children were taken to Terezin. Only 132 of those children were known to have survived.” I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Shorewood community for their support during this production. Arts education is vibrant in Shorewood School District. Thank you for being an ambassador for arts education in our public schools! Enjoy I Never Saw Another Butterfly! Mr. Joe D. King SHS Drama Director

OUR SET DESIGN The set design for I Never Saw Another Butterfly is based on a paper collage, titled “Fantasy.” Hana Lissauova, a child prisoner in Terezin, created the collage using found office paper. She was deported to Terezin on February 25, 1942. In the camp, she lived in house number 28, and belonged to ‘Group A.’ She perished at Auschwitz on October 16, 1944. The set and projected images in this show are based upon the found children’s art, and digitized for this production. The drawings themselves, which play such an important part of the show, help create a sense of place and atmosphere.
