d i r e c to r ’ s n o t e s Welcome to Spring Awakening, the final production in the 2012-2013 Shorewood High School Drama Season! We opened with a rousing production of Lend Me a Tenor in September, continued with Godspell in February, and Showcase 2013 in March. Tonight’s production of Spring Awakening looks to be a world premiere by a public high school. The students and the artistic staff couldn’t be more excited to tell this important story. When I first saw a production of Spring Awakening, it was the first Broadway tour in Louisville, Kentucky. I was instantly mesmerized by its tragedy, its beautiful melodies, and its powerful message. I immediately decided that I needed to see it again, and purchased one ticket to sit on stage at the Chicago production. Being that close to the raw energy made it even more transformative for me. Is Spring Awakening unique? Yes. Is it progressive? Yes. Does it have difficult themes? Definitely. Are the themes relevant to high school aged students? Absolutely. The students have been engaged, passionate, and focused from day one. They understand that they are telling a worthwhile story…a story that, I hope you’ll note, almost entirely revolves around teenage characters. I truly believe that this musical can be a starting point for honest and open discussions between parents and their children. Parents aren’t so naive as to think that their kids aren’t grappling with difficult problems and choices – but usually out-of-sight, out-of-mind thinking prevails. Spring Awakening clearly points out the perils of parents being disassociated from their teenagers’ struggles. I would like to thank the entire artistic staff for their dedicated and thoughtful work on this endeavor. Patrick Spreadbury, Adam Baus, Jake Condon, Carrie Hallblade, Deb Schwinn, and Thom Cauley…it’s been a great seven weeks of collaboration. Thanks to the parents and families for the trust you have placed in us. Thank you to Matt Joynt and Marty Lexmond for their unwavering support for this project. Thank you to the community partners who helped facilitate the Community Forum and the Talkback Sessions: Samaritan Family Wellness, Alliance School, Pathfinders, Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, and Planned Parenthood. I believe that we, too often, sell teenagers a little short. They want to do great and powerful things and will rise to the occasion if given the opportunity. Ilse sings, near the end of the musical, “Listen to what’s in the heart of a child, a song so big in one so small, soon you will hear where beauty lies – you’ll hear and you’ll recall.” Finally, thank you for your support. The arts are alive and well in Shorewood. Thank you for being an ambassador for arts education in our public schools! Enjoy Spring Awakening! Mr. Joe D. King SHS Drama Director
