A M E S S AG E F R O M S TAG E D I R E C TO R – E U G E N I A A R S E N I S Paris, 2005. Somewhere between Cuba and Greece, the ethnologist Miguel Barnet and I had endless discussions. Esteban Montejo, the Cimarrón, was Barnet’s hero in the Autobiography of a Runaway Slave, the piece on which this opera is based. It is a story of loneliness and revolution, a true story of a real hero. Barnet spoke to me with affection about an intelligent man who surpassed major difficulties, established a profound dialogue with nature, and, although he becomes seemingly free, he was surrounded by many threats; a man of solitude who fought to the end for collective freedom. Esteban was 103 years old when Miguel Barnet, only 25, approached him after noticing an article on veterans who learned how to read and write. Barnet and Montejo gradually established a relationship of trust and communication that lead to a unique friendship until the end of Esteban’s life at the age of 113, in 1973. A few years earlier, the poet Hans Magnus Enzensberger read the Autobiography and suggested to Hans Wener Henze the creation of the opera. El Cimarrón is a work for four musicians, whom the composer treats as “co-creators” since they often have to determine the pitch and the rhythms themselves. The relation between the music and the text alternates from Sprechgesang to lyrical singing, and this enhances the theatricality of the work. Apart from the unique structure of the opera, both musically and textually, one could observe that the artistic process is consistent with its ideological frame. The collectivity, which is one of the core themes of the work, is realized from participation of the musicians to the development of the opera. Through Esteban’s narration, the opera approaches the social and political life in Cuba. Yet, the work discusses cross-cultural and timeless values from oppression, injustice and racism, to struggle, friendship and companionship. Revisiting the work, as my first production of it was in 2005 at the Greek National Opera, I express my gratitude to the Skylight team and to Eric McKeever for their collaboration and enthusiasm. It is a challenge for the stage director to visualize memories and emotions. In our theatrical approach, Esteban’s world is gradually revealed. I welcome you to be part of this moving yet adventurous journey.

A M E S S AG E F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R - V I S WA S U B B A R A M A N Welcome to Hans Werner Henze’s El Cimarrón! We are excited to continue our discussion of revolution and freedom with a theatre piece by an important German composer. I had the opportunity to cover the world premiere of a Henze piece when I was in Paris, and he attended the premiere. There is no question that he was a brilliant composer and a sweet man. I am very proud that the Skylight is taking on the challenge of doing his work. The 1970s marked the fade out of the 1940s romantic composers and the growth of the modernists. Henze had a fascination with writing music for the theater for most of his life. His compositions in the 1960s and 70s follow the experimental trend of his peers. For many composers it was difficult to write tonal and heart-on-the-sleeve music in the wake of the Holocaust, so composers began exploring new sounds and more intellectual ways of looking at music – it was emotionalism that got the world in trouble in the first place. Many American composers went the route of purely serial works where musical notes were put together in a highly engineered and intellectually structured manner. Henze, perhaps because of his socialist leanings, chose to write about very human stories, albeit in a more eclectic manner. In El Cimarrón, Henze uses a variety of compositional techniques since his primary focus was to use the musical language that best helps tell the story. Because of the desire to search for new sounds and new ways of writing those sounds, the notation in El Cimarrón is visually stunning. It pushes the performers to improvise and communicate with each other in a manner that is both theatrical and mimics chamber music. In fact, Henze did not label this work as an opera or a musical theater piece; he simply called it a recital for four musicians. El Cimarrón is a challenge for all involved. It tells a difficult tale of slavery and revolution, so the emotional range of the actor/singer is tested. It embraces a variety of musical languages – to the point of having the performers improvise a musical line to a drawing – so the performers are tested. Much in the vein of Schindler’s List or The Color Purple watching an actor go through an intense emotional range with this complex music is difficult, so you, the audience, are also tested. But, the reward for all of us in taking on the challenge is immeasurable.

A M E S S AG E F R O M T H E M A N AG I N G D I R E C TO R – A M Y S . J E N S E N Welcome to Skylight Music Theatre and our production of Hans Werner Henze’s El Cimarrón. We are starting the New Year with an intriguing departure from Skylight’s past productions in our Studio Theatre. As we continue our season of freedom and revolution, we bring a powerful and compelling piece to our black box space. The incredible momentum from last season’s success has definitely carried over into our 2013-14 season, starting with Artistic Director Viswa Subbaraman’s first production at Skylight, Fidelio, and filling the holiday season with a nearly sold out run of Les Misérables directed by Molly Rhode. We have much in store for the remainder of the season in the Cabot Theatre with In The Heights later this month, our first Philip Glass production with Hydrogen Jukebox in March, and the iconic 60s musical Hair at the end of the season under the direction of Associate Artistic Director Ray Jivoff. Finally, in May we welcome Milwaukee-born composer Daron Hagen as writer, composer, and director of I Hear America Singing in the Studio Theatre. Thank you for supporting Skylight in so many ways. We wouldn’t be here without you! We look forward to seeing you throughout the remainder of our season. Best wishes for a happy and music-filled 2014!
