S T E E P T H E AT R E CO M PA N Y Steep Theatre Company was founded in 2000 by artists with little more than a desire to work in an open, ensemble atmosphere and a shoestring budget. Over the years, the company has become a dedicated, close-knit group of twenty-four actors, directors, designers, and writers driven by a shared commitment to the organization’s mission: To bring out the everyday truths in the stories we tell through ensemble work and to reach out to non-traditional theater goers by seeking out stories and creating experiences relevant to them. As a company, we believe theater should stoke conversations about the issues and conditions that are a part of all of our lives; conversations that take place amongst and between our artists and audiences in the theater, in the lobby, or long after everyone has headed home. But Steep’s goal is more than just creating these conversations. Our goal is to add more voices to these conversations. We strive to reach the everyday person that may have abandoned theater as a relevant art form by telling stories that touch their lives in real and palpable ways and by creating an environment that is welcoming to everyone. By bringing these voices back to the theater, we hope to reinvigorate our conversations and ensure that theater is a viable, vital, and productive art form. Over the past 10 years Steep has produced over 30 shows that have enjoyed remarkable critical and commercial success. We find works that showcase and broaden our ensemble’s talents and our ensemble style. DAVID: VAL: PAUL: VAL: PAUL:
I love teaching, butWell, teaching. We’d all love to teach. Five star life on a two star salary. Fucking disaster. (Love and Money, Scene 3)
I grew up during the recession of the 1970s. My family didn’t have much money— it seemed that no one had much money then. My mom was a teacher and my dad was an actor—neither of my parents was making a ton of dough. There was gas rationing then, and since our license plate ended in an odd number, my mom would line up our Volkswagen Bug at the local Amoco on odd-numbered days. We never went to a “sit down” restaurant. Dinner out was Jack in the Box or Roy Rogers. Christmas and birthday presents were stuff that we needed, not stuff that we wanted. We never went on vacations. Years later, when I was in my early 30s, my boyfriend at the time finally introduced me to the joys of going on vacation (thank you Joey Friedman). My siblings and I were often times embarrassed by our family’s rather raggedy lifestyle. In the 1970s there was no mass use of credit cards. It was almost impossible to live beyond your means. So we did without—sometimes unhappily, sometimes not so unhappily. Dennis Kelly’s Love and Money has been, for me, a reminder of why I do what I do. I’m the one with the “Five star life on a two star salary.” And I think I am the luckiest person in the world. There are more than 800 million credit cards held by U.S. consumers. The average credit card debt per U. S. household with credit card debt is around $6,500. The total U.S. credit card debt is rising towards an alarming $1 trillion. Student loan debt surpassed the $1 trillion mark in 2011. Credit card late payments, after decreasing in 2010, are again on the rise. One last note: In the UK (as in some states in the U.S.), there is no spousal liability for credit card debt if the spouse is not a co-signer. If a wife has racked up thousands in credit card debt, when she dies her debt dies with her.
