A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R N O T E S Welcome to Dancemakers 2011, and thank you for being here with us tonight. I hope you enjoy this evening of creative and inspiring dance. This concert brings to a close the Department of Dance’s year-long stellar Masculine/Feminine season. Throughout the year, UWM students and the Milwaukee community had the opportunity to experience many transformative events and unforgettable performances. With this season’s 28 faculty and student performances, we have reached many lives and hopefully have impacted this community with our continuous commitment to narrowing the distance between the Milwaukee/Midwest and the broader American dance scenes. This concert also concludes the long tenure of our colleague and dear friend Janet Lilly at the Department of Dance. Janet’ s creative mind and vision is behind the current low residency format of our MFA program. Since her arrival at UWM in 1995, Janet has become one of the most influential figures in this community’s artistic life. Janet leaves us in August for the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where she will fill the position of Department Chair. Most recently, our colleague and friend Luc Vanier announced his departure to the University of Utah, where he will chair the Ballet Department. Luc has also impacted the Milwaukee dance scene tremendously since his arrival in 2004. Both are pursuing their dreams and we wish them our very best! This show also concludes a successful four-week series of performances produced in four different Milwaukee venues since the beginning of July. During this month, the Milwaukee community had the opportunity to discover the works of MFA UWM Peck School of the Arts 1

Together, they presented several radically different and compelling concerts that are the performance culmination of their work in our Master of Fine Arts program in Dance. They have provided a wonderful celebration of the dynamic nature and creative agenda of our graduating class. Tonight, we continue celebrating our students’ high level of achievement and creativity. With the eight pieces in this program, choreographed by prolific artists from New York; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; Minneapolis; Holland, Michigan; and Winchester, Virginia, you will travel on a high-speed ride through time and space. Hopefully you will be transported to a different world, where different dance forms, acting, text and the lack of gravity coexist in perfect harmony -- all this for the modest price of a single ticket. This is not a ‘ticket to ride,’ but an amazing ride with one ticket… Thank you for supporting the arts. Your presence is essential to the growth and to the survival of this art form. In this exploration, the Ardhanarishwara stands as a metaphor depicting themes of independence and interdependence within relationships. The timelessness of human relationships is also considered, with an understanding that our conversations and loves and disagreements re-occur generation after generation with the same importance as the moment during which they happen for the first time. Call Girls recreates the echoes of the first phonic utterance from Alexander Bell and merges it with the anonymous heavy panting received earlier today on a young call girls phone.

BIOGR APHIES Iain Court has worked as a designer, performer, director, and stage manager across all genres of performance and in theatres throughout Australia and touring Europe. He has lit works in medieval churches, circus tents, on riverbanks and in haunted houses as well as many theatres. He is interested in new media performance and collaborated on award-winning installations and touring productions. Recent projects include lighting for The Making of Americans at DanceTheaterWorkshop in New York, Simone Ferro and Friends at Danceworks, The Drowsy Chaperone at Cardinal Stritch University; and Winterdances, Summerdances and Dancemakers at UWM. Emma Draves is a performer, choreographer, and teacher currently residing in Chicago. Emma has worked with a variety of local productions including Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Orchestra for the Millennium Park New Millennium Celebration, Lookingglass Theatre’s Sita Ram, Victory Gardens’ The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, and Maraya Theater’s The Immigrant. Emma has spent the past six years performing with Mordine & Company Dance Theatre; this past year as Artistic Associate and, the past seven years with Natya Dance Theatre. As a bilingual choreographer working with Modern and Bharatanatyam movement vocabularies and performance theories, Emma has received the Links Hall LinkUp Choreographic Grant, Chicago Cultural Center’s DanceBridge Grant, and the Chicago Dancemakers Forum’s Greenhouse Grant. Emma currently teaches the advanced program at the Dance Center, La Grange and guest teaches and choreographs around the Chicago area.

A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Simone Ferro joined the UWM in 2001. She fulfills the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Dance at the Peck School of the Arts. After a professional career as soloist with dance companies in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Geneva, Switzerland, she completed graduate work in dance at the University of Iowa. Simone has collaborated extensively with local dance, theater and opera companies (including the Milwaukee Ballet, the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and the Florentine Opera), and she has worked with many visual artists, musicians, filmmakers and writers to explore a wide variety of social themes and topics. She is recipient of several awards, including a UWM Graduate School Research Grant, an Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, a Research Growth Initiative (RGI) grant, and a Choreographic Fellowship from the Wisconsin Arts Board. Simone is a fellow of the UWM Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Cultures and Communities Program. Her recent work, “Type: B-negative,” is part of her research on Brazilian folk festivals and dramatic dances. With her husband and research partner Meredith W. Watts she travels to Brazil every year to document and research the Bumba-meu-boi folk festivities in the Northeastern state of Maranhão. Teacher, choreographer, and dancer in demand, Elijah Alhadji Gibson is currently on faculty at the Shenandoah University Conservatory in Winchester, VA. Originally from San Diego, CA, he attended San Diego School for the Performing Arts and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance and Choreography from Sam Houston State University. He joined Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago in 2000 where he performed for eight years. He has worked with and performed the works of Tony Powell, Christopher Huggins, the late Gus Giordano,


B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) Liz Imperio, Mia Michaels, Jon Lehrer, and Randy Duncan, among many others. He has performed and taught throughout the United States as well as in Germany, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Latvia, Spain, Ecuador, Latvia, and Mexico. Mr. Gibson‘s choreography has been performed by dance companies abroad, local Chicago dance companies, as well as by university dance ensembles throughout the country. Lisa Giobbi has distinguished herself as among the early innovators of aerial dance. Since founding the Lisa Giobbi Movement Theatre in 1991, the company has performed in theaters and opera houses throughout Europe and the United States as well as outdoor festivals and sports arenas, most notably at The Joyce Theater in NY, La Scala in Milan, La Fenici in Venice and the Santa Rosalia Festival in Palermo. She was a three-time guest artist in the Deutche Opera in Berlin, and her aerial dance work has been repeatedly presented at the Wintergarten Variety in Berlin, the Apollo in Düsseldorf and the Friedrichbau in Stuttgart. She has toured excerpts from her Falling Angels show throughout Europe with the British band The Tiger Lilies and the gala show Daniel Ezralow and Friends. Giobbi has created choreography for and performed in independent films, music videos, commercials, fashion shows, benefits, television specials, Off Off Broadway, cabaret theater, gala presentations and rock concerts. Off-Broadway, her work has been featured in David Rabe’s Those the River Keeps and David Lynch’s Industrial Symphony #1. She was staff choreographer for five years for New York City’s Big Apple Circus as well as choreographing and performing with St Louis’ Circus Flora where she worked in the air, on horses and an African elephant. A BFA graduate of Juilliard, she joined MOMIX in 1983 where she collaborated and performed with Moses Pendleton throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas for eight years. She choreographed and performed with Pilobolus, as well as with Martha Clarke.

Scott Lyons – performance artist, dancer, choreographer, rapper, cardiologist, and professional exaggerator – has a ferocious appetite for recreating and reinterpreting the boundaries of traditional perception. He draws from his eclectic education in the performing arts, as well as his somatic education as a certified Body-Mind Centering® Practitioner, Somatic Movement Educator/Therapist, Yoga Therapist, and Infant Developmental Movement Educator. Recently, his work has been shown at Symphony Space, The Tank, Judson Church, Dance New Amsterdam, The Ritz, Triskelion Arts Center, Marlboro College, Dixon Place, Bowery poetry Club, Bryant-Lake bowl, and Waterside Plaza. In addition to making his own dance-theater works, he has also worked with Keigwin & Company, Wendy Blum, Daisy Spurs, Murray Hill, Despina Stamos, Two-Headed Calf, David Neumann, and Abel Costa. Scott has taught nationally and internationally, and has been a feature presenter at various somatic conferences. Scott is currently an adjunct-professor at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. April Sellers has developed a unique, emotion-driven approach to modern dance through her work as a dancer, choreographer, and Artistic Director of The April Sellers Dance Collective , which she founded with composer Michael O’Brien in 2002. Subsequently, the group awarded an Artist Initiative grant in 2005 from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Since moving to Minneapolis after receiving her BFA in Dance from Ohio State University, she has been featured as a dancer in original works by many artists including Judith Howard, Laurie Van Wieren, John Munger, and Liz Lerman. Sellers’ work with choreographer Judith Howard on House of Big Love won a Sage Award for Outstanding Performance in 2006. B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) Minnesota Fringe Festival, Red Eye Theater, and Bryant Lake Bowl. Sellers was awarded 2011 McKnight Fellowship for Choreography. Shawn Short has studied with nationally and internationally acclaimed artists including faculty and dancers from Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Lines Ballet, Washington Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Dance Institute of Washington, Dance Alloy, Philadanco, Towson University, Baltimore and Duke Ellington School of Performing Arts. Shawn holds a BFA in Musical Theatre with a minor in Theatre Management from Howard University. Presently, he is Professor of Ballet at Catholic University of America and a 2013 MFA Candidate in Dance at University Of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Shawn is also a fiscally sponsored artist through the New York Foundation for the Arts. He is the founding Artistic Director of Dissonance Dance Theatre. Maxine Steinman has been presenting her choreography in the NYC-tri-state area for the past 15 years at venues such as the 92nd Street Y, the Joyce Soho, Dance Space, the Dumbo Arts Festival, JKO Theater, The Ailey Citigroup Theater, and most recently in the Westfest Dance Festival. Internationally, Maxine has been invited to Taiwan, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Japan and Cyprus to teach, choreograph, and perform her work. She has also been commissioned to create works for Montclair State University, Hofstra University, Marymount Manhattan College, the Ailey School and conservatories in Spain, Brazil, and Taiwan. Maxine received commissioning grants from the O’DonnellGreen Foundation for Music and Dance to collaborate with composers Matthew Ferry and Dred Scott in 2009 and 2011. Ms. Steinman has performed with Eleo Pomare (12 years), Denishawn Repertory Dancers, Mafata Dance Company, Robin Becker, Regina Larkin, Sue Bernhard, Spiritdance, and in the LINKS Project with the José 6 UWM Peck School of the Arts

Limón Dance Company, among others. Maxine teaches at the Limón Institute, The Ailey School, Montclair State University, Hofstra University, and Marymount Manhattan College. Formerly the director of the LINKS Project for the Limón Foundation, she stages excerpts of “A Choreographic Offering” by José Limón for universities. Maxine holds a BFA in Dance from Adelphi University and an MA in Dance and Dance Education from Teachers College Columbia University. Seth Warren-Crow is a sound artist, sound designer, composer, percussionist, and instructor. He composes music locally and nationally for dance and theater performances and regularly collaborates with performance artist Heather Warren-Crow as warren-crow+warrencrow. Seth received a BA in English and Religious Studies from Lawrence University in Appleton, WI and his MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College in Oakland, CA. Angie Yetzke is a dancer, choreographer and educator in West Michigan. In 2009, Angie co-founded the Grand Rapids-based “Dance In The Annex” (DITA) which offers master classes and networking opportunities to local professional dancers. She founded and directed the UICA Dance Collaborative (1999-2003), the resident contemporary dance company for the multi-disciplinary Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts, and during that time was awarded the 2002 New Choreography Award through the MI Dance Council. She has served on the faculties of Western MI University, Grand Valley State University and currently teaches at Hope College in Holland, MI where she is researching the connections between movement and learning. Her choreographic work will be presented this September in the third annual international ArtPrize which takes place in Grand Rapids, MI.
