Each choreographer’s artistic vision has a special opportunity to bloom as it merges the extraordinary talents of Milwaukee Ballet dancers and sophisticated contemporary musical scores played by Present Music. Music Note: Commissioned in 2010 by Australian poet Barabara Blackman, Seasons was written for solo violin, string quintet and piano. Similar to the era of Vivaldi’s concerto grossi in terms of musical structure and instrumentation, Kats-Chernin’s Seasons is a virtuosic explosion of energy and brilliance. The violin solo takes the listener through a journey of depth and sound in a more “classical” approach, without the use of electronics, but in a way that’s fresh and new. Fall to Rise Choreographer: Petr Zahradnícek Dancers: Brooke Bloedorn, Emma Call, Rosemary Laughrin, Gina Laurenzi, Deanna Lewis, Danielle Lohuis, Carrie Martin, Kristin Reidelberger, Nicole Ross, Madeleine Schoch, Bonnie Watson Music: Honest Music and “Quiet Music” from Three Études by Nico Muhly (2003) Musicians: Eric Segnitz, Adam Marks Costumes: Marion Clendenen-Acosta, Courtesy of UWM Dance Choreographer Note: “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Confucius Music Note: Written for solo violin and pre-recorded CD, Honest Music is a collection of discrete, modular phrases recombined in “performance,” or in this case, by the electronic manipulation of the recording. The combination of soaring Englishchoirboy diatonicism with Romantic, violinistic leaps and slides up and down the fingerboard piles on top of each other in a most honest way. Music Note: “In preparation for writing a large (uncompleted) work for piano, I decided to write three short pieces to get certain musical tics out of my system.” – Nico Muhly. Each of these three études addresses a specific rhythmic and harmonic gesture. The second étude, “Quiet Music,” concerns itself with drones and chant-like music. The piece was dedicated to and premiered by pianist Eric Huebner. Dis/Equilibrium Choreographer: Simone Ferro with the input of the performers Movement Research: Katharina Abderholden (BFA 2012), Simone Ferro, Gina Laurenzi (BFA senior), Brenna Marlin (BFA senior) Rehearsal Assistant: Raven Nielsen Dancers: Justin Bohan, Mengjun Chen, Susan Gartell, Valerie Harmon, Erik Johnson, Rachel Malehorn Costumes: Courtesy of Milwaukee Ballet Costume Shop Music: The Night Mare by Christopher Cerrone (2011); Zaka by Jennifer Higdon (2003) Musicians: Marie Sander, Bill Helmers, Eric Segnitz, Adrien Zitoun, Adam Marks, Carl Storniolo Film: Kellie Bronikowski Poetry References: Adelaide Crapsey, Thomas McGrath, James Wright Collaborators: UW-Milwaukee Film Department; School of Architecture and Urban Planning Professor James Shields, FAIA Financial Support: Office of Undergraduate Research Choreographer Note: This piece analyzes the fraction of second that passes when a person starts falling. It reflects on the short period of time that the brain recognizes the sudden change in the body and sends the signals to the muscles to react. Nevertheless, this split of second might look like an eternity. The body adapts, contorts and resolves the continuous change of gravity. It produces a change of perspective of time and space. Reality is manipulated or distorted. FALL(ing)

Music Note:“In my own The Night Mare, the opening sounds are half-remembered sonic fragments of my daily ritual: breathing, noisy clicks, the drone of an idling train. As the piece progresses, these elements are organized into more recognizable and familiar musical elements: first harmonies, then a haunting, recurring melody that forms in the piano and is coated in a hazy texture by the ensemble. The electronics (which are all derived from a field recording of a train) emphasize the blurred lines between the heard and half-heard (what is a train and what is a flute?) until the work blooms into fully realized musical textures in which all of these elements finally cohere—if only for a moment.” – Christopher Cerrone Music Note: za ka (zo ko) v. To do the following almost simultaneously and with great speed: zap, sock, race, turn, drop, sprint. Zaka is described as “...an energetic and tightly focused work that uses string instruments in percussive and unorthodox ways. It’s sophisticated writing...”—The Sacramento Bee. Commissioned as part of the national series of works from Meet the Composer Commissioning Music/USA, Zaka’s rhythmic drive will ignite audience and dancers alike. Music Note: Commissioned by the Arts Council of Ireland and the City Music Society (London) for the Duke Quartet, Volans’ String Quartet No. 6 is a combination of live and pre-recorded quartets. Sequences of slow sustained chords, with specific instructions to play with or without vibrato, create a “rocking” motion. “The ear strains to distinguish the source, the sound balance so equal, the play of psycho-acoustics magical, peaceful, settling…one of the most beautiful and haunting works I have heard for a very long time.” – Annette Morreau, The Independent Slowly and Always Choreographer: Dani Kuepper Assistant Rehearsal: Raven Nielsen Dancers: Courtney Kramer, Janel Meindersee, Raven Nielsen, Mayara Pineiro, Etienne Diaz, Barry Molina, Isaac Sharratt Music: “Summer,”“Fall,”“Spring” from Seasons by Elena Kats-Chernin (2010) Musicians: Eric Segnitz, Zhan Shu, Margot Schwartz, Erin Pipal, Adrien Zitoun, Andrew Goodlett, Adam Marks Costumes: Courtesy of Milwaukee Ballet Costume Shop Choreographer Note: “Slowly and Always” embraces the circularity and certainty that propels the natural world, as well as the human spirit. We are ongoing, unfolding, evolving, ever changing and predictable in this pursuit. Music Note: please see Music Note for “Bird-Prince-Bird” 10

In 1979 after several research trips to South Africa, he began a series of pieces based on African composition techniques, which occupied him for the next 10 years. After a productive collaboration with the Kronos Quartet in the 1980s, his work, principally in the field of chamber and orchestral music, has been regularly performed worldwide. In the last decade, he has turned his attention to writing for orchestra as well as collaborating with visual artists.
Kevin Stalheim (Present Music Artistic Director) is the founder and Artistic Director of Present Music, Milwaukee’s nationally acclaimed new music ensemble. He is a professional trumpet player and has freelanced extensively in the Milwaukee area, including work with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Stalheim received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and his Master of Music and Conducting from UWM, where he also received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2010 for his work in the arts and education. Through Stalheim’s considerable efforts, Present Music is now regarded as one of the foremost national organizations in the development and presentation of new music. His concerts are enthusiastically reviewed, always well-rehearsed and performed, and continue to be imaginative and provocative. Through his dedication to commissioning, recording, and touring new work—now counting more than 50 world premieres— Present Music remains at the forefront of new music ensembles in the United States.
Petr Zahradnícek (Choreographer, “Fall to Rise;” sponsored by Betty Quadracci) is a native of the Czech Republic. After graduating from the Brno Dance Conservatoire, he joined the National Theater in Prague. In 1996, Zahradnícek moved to Germany where he danced with Theater Vorpommern, Salzburg Ballet and Stadttheater Wurzburg. In 2001, he decided to move to the United States where he danced with Colorado Ballet before joining Milwaukee Ballet. Since joining Milwaukee Ballet in 2003, Zahradnícek has created many pieces for the Milwaukee Ballet, the Nancy Einhorn Milwaukee Ballet II Program and Milwaukee Ballet School & Academy. He has also choreographed three pieces for Ballet Memphis in Tennessee. In 2007, Zahradnícek received a grant from the New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate of New York City Ballet. This summer, he took park in Danceworks’ Art to Art collaboration with other local artists. He is currently choreographing for UWM for the January Winterdances concert. Zahradnícek is a three-time finalist at McCallum’s Choreography Festival and his pas de deux “1 Run 2” was the winner of the Paid Engagement Award in 2011. This autumn, as part of this award, he will again present a full-length program of his work at the McCallum Theater in California. (Photo courtesy of Jessica Kaminski)

P R E S E N T M U S I C ’ S C R E AT I O N P R OJ E C T “The Creation Project has given me an opportunity that many professional composers can only dream of.” -Katie Parker, Milwaukee High School of the Arts Student Present Music places composers “in residence” with young people to teach them how to create and compose meaningful musical works of their own. Known as the Creation Project, the program culminates in a world premiere public performance of the students’ compositions. Present Music offers eight to ten residencies each year. More than 1,000 students take part in the Creation Project annually. Upon completion of each residency, students have learned: -how harmony and melody interact -how to construct rhythm -to understand the significance of musical form/composition theory -how to orchestrate for a small ensemble -effective collaboration, critical problem solving and public presentation skills For more information about a residency at your school, call 414-271-0711 and ask for Christine Liu, or email cmliu@presentmusic.org. 22
