FROM THE PRESIDENT Merry Christmas! As President, as well as a singing member of the Waukesha Choral Union, it is my honor and privilege to welcome you to our 2011 holiday concert, “A Collage of Carols”. The holiday season makes one reflect on the many things for which we are thankful. It is a time for rejoicing and celebration.
I am thankful for our wonderful director, and the dedicated musicians that make up our group. I am thankful for our donors and advertisers, without whom our organization could not survive. Most of all I am thankful that you, our audience, have come to share the joy of our celebration. We are all truly fortunate to be able to celebrate the holiday season through the gift of music, rejoicing in song to glorify our Savior’s birth. My hope is that you enjoy this celebration as much as we do, and participate fully in the sing-a-longs it truly is good for the soul. To prolong the musical celebration of the season, I invite you to order one of our new CD’s. Just recorded, it features many of the wonderful selections that you will hear this evening. In any event, I hope that you enjoy the concert enough to invite friends, family members, and neighbors to experience the wonderful performances that will make up the rest of our 2011-2012 season. Originally a combination of the Carroll College student chorus and community singers named Waukesha Choral Society in 1949, the group became the Town and Gown in 1961 and the Waukesha Choral Union in 1974, taking its present form as an auditioned choir in 1978. MISSION The Waukesha Choral Union will challenge, enrich, and engage its singing members, audiences, and community through the pursuit of excellence and a variety of programming. Ernest Brusubardis, III, Artistic Director of the Waukesha Choral Union, is a graduate of UW Milwaukee with the Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Music and the Master’s Degree in Music Education with an emphasis on choral conducting. His other choral directorships include the advanced ensembles of Hartford Union High School and the BrusubardisDzimente Latvian Choir, a podium he shares with his father. His expertise in this latter pursuit has earned him the chief conductorship of Latvian Song Festivals in the United States, Canada, and Latvia. As a music theater enthusiast, he conducts the orchestra for the annual productions at Hartford Union High School and boasts a record as music director for community theater productions throughout Southeastern Wisconsin, including Menomonee Falls Patio Players, On the Wall and Off the Wall theaters, Archangel Productions, and shows at the UW Milwaukee and West Bend extensions.

You will also have a chance to sing along with more than one anthem, so be prepared to stand and join in with WCU as we ring in the season together. You’ll find the words for the sing along on the Text Insert of this program. Our concert features delightful carols from the English tradition as well as arrangements of popular Christmas songs from around the world. Of course we had to include American gems like “Carol of the Drum,”“White Christmas,” and “Sleigh Ride” to round out our selections. If you have been to previous Waukesha Choral Union Christmas concerts, then you will recognize our bookends of “O Come, O Come Immanuel” and “Stille Nacht.” Our hope for you is that your heart be warmed by the message and encouraged to create beauty in our world. St. Catherine of Alexandria Church was founded by Irish immigrants in 1847. The current worship space was constructed in 2000 through the vision of the congregation’s current pastor, Rev. David A. Verhasselt. The original worship space is now the church’s Gathering Area. The many beautiful combinations of old and new in this wonderful renovation and addition include the restored Stations of the Cross, the original altar, and parts of the original painted glass windows. In recent years, as the physical structure of the church has grown, so has its membership, expanding from about 120 families in 1994 to nearly 1000 families today. The congregation’s mission is to welcome everyone, to be a “spiritual home away from home.”

STUDENT TEXT WRITING COMPETITION WITH $50 0 PRIZE The Waukesha Choral Union is accepting student poems, prose, or other original writings to use as a text for a commissioned choral work for its 20122013 season. The musical piece will be written by Waukesha-born composer Paula Foley Tillen. All students age 12 to 18 at the time of this contest that are educated in Waukesha county are eligible. The author will be honored, as well as receive a stipend of $500, at the WCU’s performance of Handel’s “Messiah” on March 25th, 2012 at Carroll University’s Shattuck Auditorium. Complete rules and an entry form are available online at www.choralunion.org or by calling 414-297-9310. The student submission must be original. The subject of the text is at the creative discretion of the author. Entries are due by December 15, 2011. The Waukesha Choral Union Commission committee will select the winner by January 15th, 2012. Paula Foley Tillen, a graduate of Waukesha’s Carroll University, has been a professional musician in southeastern Wisconsin for the past thirty years, and is much in demand as a composer, music director, pianist, vocal coach, and accompanist. Tillen’s compositions and arrangements have been performed by a wide variety of distinguished local, regional, national, and international groups. Tillen’s work can be found in the catalogues of Hal Leonard Publishing Co., Alliance Publishing Co., Treble Clef Music Press, and Santa Barbara Music Press.

Christmas Carols through the Years…Excerpted from Infobarrel.com “ . . . The playing of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the choir . . .” These lines from one of the oldest English Christmas carols,“The Holly and the Ivy,” remind us of the importance of music and singing to the celebration of Christmas. But how did the tradition of Christmas carols develop? In the ninth and tenth centuries the monasteries of Northern Europe used rhyming Latin verses to educate people about the religious meaning of Christmas. By the twelfth century they were being set to the music of popular songs. The influence of St Francis of Assisi was crucial from the thirteenth century onward in the growing trend of writing Christmas songs in the native language of a country, rather than using Latin, to ensure that everyone could sing them and understand their meaning. Christmas carols were first published in English in 1426, including “Good King Wenceslas” and “The Holly and the Ivy.” These carols were probably sung by wassailers, a medieval custom involving peasants going door to door visiting the wealthiest feudal lords in the area, offering their blessings in song in return for food and drink. Often this ended up in drunkenness, gambling, and promiscuity. Martin Luther and Charles Wesley were among those who wrote carols and encouraged their use in worship. A new interest in recording and preserving carols developed in the nineteenth century, leading to print versions of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” along with “The First Noel,”“I Saw Three Ships,” “God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen,” and “Silent Night.” Carols were considered an important feature of Christmas celebrations and traditions in Victorian times, as reflected in Charles Dickens’ choice of a title for his novel A Christmas Carol of 1843. As we sing Christmas carols today, we connect with traditions, and sometimes even controversies, that are centuries old. Hopefully, they also refresh our own memories of the joy and excitement of Christmases past and present.
