IN MEMORIA M : LOIS WEBER The Trojan Players dedicate the 2013-2014 Theatre Season To Lois Weber who has made special dreams come true for many children, and for all of those children who have now grown up, yet still believe in magic. Lois Weber. This is a name that has become synonymous with the community she loved so much and gave to unselfishly for many years. Many of us have been touched by Lois Weber in some way. Think about this:
• How has Mrs. Weber helped you become who you are? • How has she cared for you and shown you that she wanted what was best for you?
Mrs. Weber was a first-class human being.
Through her work on the school board she championed opportunities for students to excel as learners and as the Director of the Children’s Theatre of Wauwatosa, she exercised their imaginations and made them grow in wonderful and unexpected ways. She was a strong supporter of theatre in the Wauwatosa School District and advocated for exceptional theatre experiences for our students. Expectations are part of being human. From our first big entrance into the world to our final exit, we all juggle expectations. Mrs. Weber had high expectations for everyone she worked with and she encouraged us to grow beyond those expectations. A challenge at best. Through encouragement and endless love, Mrs. Weber quietly taught us all many valuable lessons:
• That we unite and acknowledge each other’s individual gifts in a world that seeks to declare their unimportance. • That we recognize each other, different in our talents, but united in a common objective. • That we take each other for their word, and not the word of others. • That we acknowledge and thank others. • And embrace one another when the curtain falls.
As a community, we wrapped our arms around her and never wanted to let her go. Lois Weber has left the most wonderful legacy. All of us have special people in our lives. And I know that Mrs. Weber holds a special place in the hearts of many that are here, and many that are far away. Lois Weber had an incredible presence about her. Presence is about grabbing the light, but somehow Mrs. Weber found the light and was part of it. Until we meet again, my friend. May you always be part of the light…

SYNOPSIS ACT I The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a tale that follows the journey of a dreamer. Joseph is the son of Jacob and one of twelve brothers. He is given a coat of many colors by his father, which is symbolic of his favor and an object of his brothers’ jealousy. The brothers decide to sell Joseph into slavery after initially plotting to have him killed. Convincing their father that his favorite son has died, they reveal his tattered coat and believe that they are rid of him once and for all. From his homeland of Canaan, Joseph is taken to Egypt where he becomes the slave of Egyptian millionaire Potiphar and earns his trust. Managing his household, he soon has to ward off the affections of Potiphar’s wife. Enraged and unwilling to assess the situation, Potiphar has Joseph thrown into jail where he interprets the dreams of his cellmates. The prisoners are awed by his hidden talents of interpretation and encourage Joseph to pursue dreams of his own. ACT II Joseph’s fortunes take a turn for the better as the Pharaoh hears rumors of his talent. Having strange recurring dreams about cows and ears of corn, the Pharaoh asks Joseph what his mysterious dreams could mean. Joseph determines that they are omens of a famine that will swipe the land in seven years. This foresight allows actions to be made to prevent devastation and grants Joseph a position as the second most powerful man in Egypt. Back in Canaan, Joseph’s brothers are afflicted by starvation and regret their treatment of Joseph. Hearing of the prosperity of Egypt, they unknowingly ask for Joseph’s help. He devises a test to see if his brothers have changed their ways, and finally reveals himself donning his dreamcoat once again.

D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S When I think of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, I envision a show as big as its title. Flashy, energetic, big dance numbers, and lots of music. It all feels so epic and gigantic. And it is. In today’s world, color is all over, so much so that we barely notice it unless it is used particularly well, or until it’s absent, as it was in our fall production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. Tonight we enter the world of color in a big way! Welcome to the Award-Winning Tosa West Trojan Players production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Joseph was first presented in London in 1968 as a 15-minute pop cantata and gradually expanded over the years to a full-length work. Joseph takes its story from the last chapters of Genesis in which a young man of great gifts, chastised by those around him for having such gifts, stays true to himself and by doing so achieves great things. It’s a powerful story we can all learn from. The story of Joseph and his coat of many colors is familiar to most, perhaps from childhood Bible stories, and even more familiar as the musical gained popularity, not to mention the 1999 film starring Donny Osmond. Skimming jauntily over the surface, the musical ignores the tale’s religious and historical significance as well as its potential for spiritual exploration. Its libretto is dotted with ambiguous and childish sentiments and is properly paired with a peppy, lightweight pop score that repeatedly drives home tuneful and modest melodies. Tonight, we honor the slender but sturdy bones that make this an enduring family favorite. This is feel good entertainment! Playful but not particularly witty, and every bit as spectacular. In working on this production, I was reminded that it takes many talented people to put something of this magnitude together and make it all work successfully. This production involves students from Tosa West, Eisenhower Elementary School, Whitman Middle School, Wauwatosa Montessori School, and Immanuel Lutheran School. For anyone that’s counting that’s over 150 students including the cast, crew, and pit. I certainly owe a debt of gratitude to many people who were instrumental in making this a very special production. Thank you! So here’s to dreaming big and hoping we create a very special theatrical experience for each and every one of you tonight. Thank you for supporting the arts in the Wauwatosa community and spending “and hour or two” with us dreamers here at Tosa West. Enjoy the show! Adam Steffan Director

She is happy to be a part of such a fun musical, and hope that you all enjoy it as well. Jessica Wilson (Wife/ Egyptian): Jess is thrilled to be in the cast of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. This is her first show here at Wauwatosa West. definitely be returning! Lizzie Kniffin (Wife/ Egyptian): Lizzie is delighted to be in the Tosa West Trojan Players production of JOSEPH. Alex Lee (Baker/ Ensemble): Alex Lee is overjoyed to be in this show for many reasons. The first is because Molly Fritsch is student director, and this fills
his lungs with jubilance. The next is because Mary Kayser. He is simply overjoyed that she is a person. Alex likes the crunchwrap supreme at Taco Bell. He is also excited that Calyn Bolton is in the show. Alex doesn’t like math. Phoebe’s voice turns his consciousness to mush. Hess and Kniffin are pretty cool too. He went onto play Todd in CHECK, PLEASE, and just recently participated in the wonderful show of OUR TOWN. Scott is ecstatic to finish off his second semester with this production of JOSEPH.

Gabe Poehls (Levi): Gabe is proud to play Levi, a brother of Joseph’s, in this year’s spring production. He is a sophomore here at West and JOSEPH will be his third show. His past productions include CATS and A CHORUS LINE. Outside of theatre he has a variety of hobbies including longboarding and making duct tape wallets, training in the sport of Boxhead 2play, eating healthy and listening to Youth Lagoon. He plans on having a great show every night and being a part of many shows to come. Noah Strand (Gad): Tiberius Sentius Cinnatus, wizard of the eighth dimension and sophomore at West is honored to play the role of Gad in JOSEPH. Tiberius no longer resides on the eighth dimension due to his involvement with the albino monkeys of Count Leopold, who he now races on the backs of manatees every weekend along with King Cobuscus. Both will say they are superior to Tiberius in manatee riding; this is untrue as neither can ride while doing a handstand. Under the alias of Noah Olaf Strand, Tiberius was Mark in A CHORUS LINE and understudied in CHECK, PLEASE. He hopes that all in attendance will enjoy JOSEPH.

Cobi Tappa (Simeon): Cobi Tappa is very excited to be a part of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. This is Cobi’s third show with the Tosa West Trojan Players. In the past he has been involved with the shows CHECK, PLEASE as Louis and OUR TOWN as Dr. Gibbs. In Cobi’s spare time he enjoys hanging out with friends, playing/throwing cards, and spending his free time doing exactly what every mother or father expects from their 16 year old son, sleeping in until lunch and hanging around on the internet for the rest of the day. In this production, Cobi is playing Simeon, one of Joseph’s brothers. Simeon was the second oldest of the brothers and for some strange reason sings in a French accent. Cobi hopes that you enjoy this presentation of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT and would request that when the Actors/ Actresses come and do their bows that you would kindly stand up and applaud them for a job well done. Cobi thanks you for his time.

Sean VanZeeland (Issachar): Count Leopold von Lichtenstein, a sophomore at West who also goes by the name of Sean VanZeeland, is delighted to be playing the role of Issachar in JOSEPH. In the past, he has been in A CHORUS LINE, CATS, OUR TOWN, and CHECK, PLEASE, making this his fifth show. He started his career in the 8th dimension, where he was a wizard who ran a business of farming albino spider monkeys used for rousting lesser wizards from the land of Kamino. Sadly, he himself was removed by King Cobuscus, who unfairly utilized a cake and an apple peeler. Anywho, in his free time he enjoys performing simplified magic for the humanoid beings in this world, playing piano, guitar, and six other instruments, and having weekly manatee races with his subordinate, Tiberius, which isn’t really a fair competition as Tiberius loses pathetically on a regular basis. Enjoy the show, and please keep food throwing to a minimum. Mo Williams (Reuben): Mo Williams plays the role of Reuben, the eldest brother, and is overjoyed to be in JOSEPH. Mo is a sophomore and this is his first production as a Trojan Player. Mo is also a great poet, having written over 15 poems. He has quite the way with words. He hopes everyone loves the show. Nyjia Williams (Dream Dancer): Nyjia is a sophomore and this is her fourth show here at Tosa West. She was also in ALICE IN WONDERLAND, CATS, A CHORUS LINE, and OUR
TOWN. Outside of theatre, Nyjia enjoys participating in choir and volunteer work for her community.
