MEET THE BAND Karen and Richard Carpenter often kept things simple on stage, performing as just a duo. But to create the full, rich sound we all love on their albums, they had several additional musicians join in, making lush arrangements and creating unforgettable music. To bring you that same sound, Close to You: The Music of the Carpenters features Lisa Rock on lead vocals with her 6-piece backing band. Rock’s amazing four-octave range allows her to sing the hits in their original key, keeping the songs genuine and recognizable. Rock goes beyond the music in her concert; she draws you in with anecdotes about Karen and Richard Carpenter, their lives and how some of the songs originated. You can’t help but sing along with her and share the memories of The Carpenters and their music. LISA ROCK (Lead Vocals) has been performing to sold-out crowds for years. She’s written more than 15 original concerts and cabarets that have been seen across the country. Now, Rock has arranged a 6-piece band, complete with back-up singers, and together they are dedicated to creating a Carpenters experience like no other. Rock’s amazing four octave range allows her to sing the hits like “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “Rainy Days and Mondays” in their original key, keeping the songs genuine and more recognizable for the audience. “When she hits the lower range of her marvelous voice,” notes critic Alan Bresloff, “if you close your eyes, you can see Karen Carpenter’s face.”

ERIC ENGELSON (Drums) A self-taught musician since the age of three, Eric turned his passion into his profession five years ago. Though his home is typically that seedy underbelly of the Chicago theater community known as the “musicians’ pit,” you can occasionally see Eric with Alien Queen or as a sub musician for Million Dollar Quartet. Eric has been fortunate to work on productions with Chicago Childrens’ Theater, House Theater, Stage Door Fine Arts, Bailiwick Theater, Studio BE, Circle Theater, Strawdog Theater, Columbia College, The New Colony and of course, Redmoon. JUSTIN BOLLER (Bass/Guitar) has performed extensively throughout the Chicago area in numerous rock bands, brass quintets, orchestras, musical pits, Polka bands, jazz and Dixieland combos, and New Orleans “second line” groups. Some venues have included the Metropolis Theater, Genesee Theater, the United Center, Fox Theater in Boulder, CO, House of Blues, Crobar, Symphony Hall in Birmingham, England, various parades and beer tents, and even the Jerry Springer show! When he’s not performing on tuba, guitar, or bass he works at a Chicago-based microphone company by day. Justin also enjoys cycling, grilling, starry nights, and long walks on the beach. AMY MALOUF (Backup Vocals/Percussion) is extremely honored and excited to be a part of Close to You: The Music of the Carpenters. She has been seen as an actress and singer all over the Chicagoland area and just spent the holidays performing in Shedd Aquari-

Uprooted Theatre Presents

Truth: The Testimonial of Sojourner Truth Written by Eric Coble Directed by Dennis F. Johnson Featuring Marti Gobel UPROOTED theatre’s Mission is: Educate, Enrich and Entertain. The theatre provides a vital outlet through the Performing Arts for the exploration and expression of the human experience. Through its works and programs, UPROOTED theatre unites people of differing racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, religious and cultural beliefs, and genders and sexual orientations. Integrity and professionalism are essential to UPROOTED theatre’s success in these challenging endeavors. SYNOPSIS A powerful drama exploring the life of Sojourner Truth, a woman searching for identity in a country ripped apart by Civil War. As she walks thousands of miles, physically and emotionally, her evolving faith and progressive ideas send shock waves through the nation that continue to reverberate. Through music, movement and drumming, her story comes to life. From her birth as a slave, watching her brothers, sisters and even her own children sold away; to her meetings with Lincoln and her explosive speeches across the Union; to her final crisis of faith… her own mortality. The taking of pictures and/or making of visual or sound recordings are expressly forbidden. THANK YOU TO OUR MEDIA SPONSORS:

She was honored to be the first African American ever to take the stage in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

U P R O O T E D T H E AT R E H I S TO R Y In 2008, Marti Gobel, Tiffany Yvonne Cox and Travis Knight understudied Timothy Douglas’ production of Trouble in Mind at The Milwaukee Repertory Theater. After rehearsal one night, they had a conversation with local director, Dennis F. Johnson, about the lack of acting and directing opportunities for people of color in Milwaukee. They found that they were all driven to create a company that would produce plays and programs that affirm, exhibit and inspire Milwaukee’s growing AfricanAmerican population while diversifying the Milwaukee cultural landscape. In addition, these four artists wanted to create an environment where diverse audiences felt welcome and encouraged to make theatre a part of their lives. By the end of their conversation, they were impassioned to take action. The seeds of UPROOTED theatre were planted.

Within months of that initial conversation, UPROOTED theatre celebrated its first production with Dael Orlandersmith’s powerful one-woman show, Beauty’s Daughter, at The Broadway Theatre Center. To date, UPROOTED has produced four main stage productions, toured Beauty’s Daughter, produced 12 staged readings, launched its diverse arts education program (The UPROOTED EXPRESS), participated in Project1Voice for three consecutive years, and has travelled to South Africa in partnership with Renaissance Theatreworks for a cultural exchange under the umbrella of Performance Theatre. UPROOTED theatre became an official not-for-profit organization in 2011.
