The site of Columbus was settled by the Columbus Town Company on May 28, 1856. The group took its name from Columbus, Ohio, where most of the settlers had originally lived. The town site was selected for its location on the proposed route of the Transcontinental Railroad.
Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce/ Columbus Convention & Visitors Bureau 753 33rd Ave, Columbus, NE 68601 (402) 564-2769 Quincentenary Belltower The Quincentenary Belltower in Pawnee Park was officially dedicated on April 25, 1992. As a lasting monument to the community’s celebration of the Quincentenary, the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ first voyage to the New World, the project is a testament to the community spirit of Columbus. The project was made a reality through the generous donation of ten bells from the collection of Leonard Fleischer and countless volunteers and donations. Each of the bells has area historical significance and a plaque near each tower tells of the bell’s history.

March 1910, the Crofton, NE was thricing with forty businesses but lacked a nice hotel. Local entrepreneur Nick Michaelis proposed the city council would supply a water line and electricity to his property, and he would build a modern, state-of-the-art hotel. The council accepted the proposal and in 1911, construction began, with the hotel completed in 1912. Mr. Michaelis named the hotel, “The Argo”, as a tribute to the ship used to transport his ancestors to America. The words “Argo Hotel” were imprinted in bricks on the upper east side of the building and can still be seen there today.
