Guide to England's Seasons

Q - When is the best time to walk in England? We are often asked this question. To help you, we've drawn on our expertise to create this complimentary guide. You can of course walk in each season. Here in the South of England, we are blessed with four distinct seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Each one has its own characteristics and flavour, so when deciding when to plan your Foot Trail for, it really will be about what time of year resonates with you. Read on for a little description of what you may expect in each season and a short overview of our climate at that time. Every Foot Trail is custom made and crafted for you. So when you are ready, talk to us about your plans so we can advise you more specifically and answer your questions. You can email us at enquire@foottrails.co.uk or call us on +44 (0) 1747 820 626. English Spring Spring from mid-March to the end of May is a period full of contrasts. March is all about the bulb flowers; daffodils, crocus, the awakening after winter, oh and primroses too. The trees are yet to leaf, some burst to blossom, others stand like statuesque sculptures. As April gathers pace, it's the time of the woodland flowers, bluebells, garlic, yellow archangel and for the keen-eyed, orchids. Towards the end of April the trees are bursting to life too, the freshness of the first leaves is a hard thing to beat. In May it all reaches a crescendo. It's a green and lush time with all the joys of new life. Our traditional May Day celebrations mark this key point in the year.

Climate English weather is wonderfully varied. It's what makes our countryside green, our skies both blue and cloud filled, our rivers run. Be prepared for varied weathers all year round but typically March is cooler, warming through Spring, but not to excessive degrees.

English Summer Summer arrives from June through to August. June is a meadow time, swaying grasses on a breeze, a time of plenty. Nature is happy and content, the breeze is warm and all is good. There's new life everywhere. As July arrives, the countryside starts to turn from greens to the mellow tones of yellows, the ripening grasses and crops. Harvest is about to start and long summer days for making hay! To lie on a hill top, white clouds passing overhead and just the sound of nature for company is a delight. As we reach August, harvest is in full swing and there is a whirl of activity in the countryside. It's a time for picnic rugs and good things to eat.

Climate Summer is seen typically as warm and sunny, but you should still expect varied weather in England. You might experience a light rain shower, breezes or cloudy days too. This all adds to our summer beauty.

English Autumn Autumn (fall) draws in, from September to early November. This seasonal change is glorious and personally a favourite. The first hints of change are September's damp, misty mornings. As the sun rises it pierces through and burns the mist away. On the air is the smell of ripening fruits and berries, in the local churches it's all about harvest festival. Mid to end October the trees turn with their burnt oranges, reds and yellows. At the end of October the clocks go back, the evenings draw in and it's time to cosy down by a log fire, a great reward after a days' walking. The first frosts and dark evenings, on November 5th we 'celebrate' Guy Fawkes' attempt to burn down the houses of parliament, with fireworks and bonfires.

Climate Autumn days in England can vary from warm and sunny to light rain, cloud or breezes. As always with England, come expecting a bit of everything and you won't be disappointed.

English Winter Winter brings its close to the year. By then end of November the last of the leaves will fall to the floor, then it's all thoughts to one of the oldest festivals; the Winter festival. December we prepare to celebrate in the form of Christmas. Carols, fires and frosty cold mornings. Shorter walks followed by mulled wine and mince pies. Its different, but still just as fun! January arrives, the start of a new year. Look out for the first shooting snowdrops and enjoy frosty days and warm fires after your walks.

Climate Winter is our coolest time of year, but you can still find warmer, sunnier days or frosts, even light snow in the South West. We provide weather updates before you arrive so you'll be prepared and will know what to pack.
