From the Chairman Welcome to 2016 Division One Grand Final Day. While only two teams will vie for the Division One title, the day has become a great day for celebrating football across Melbourne’s east. 2016 has been a year of change in the EFL and across the state. The introduction of the player points system Graham Halbish has been the biggest reform EFL Chairman in local football history. Pleasingly it has been warmly embraced by our clubs and the introduction of the salary cap in 2017 will further strengthen the industry’s response to club sustainability issues. We are extremely pleased with the key role EFL CEO Phil Murton has played in these developments and while there will no doubt be some challenges with its implementation, we believe a solid framework of club reform is now in place to give everyone a sense of fairness and optimism. The league has prided itself on being progressive and innovative in the way we manage our competition. We are always looking at ways to improve the competition for clubs, players and spectators. While four divisions of 12 or 10 teams has served the league well, a conversation has begun with clubs regarding a potential five division structure. At present only 18 out of 44 teams play finals. The last few weeks, particularly grand final days, show the impact playing in finals and grand finals has on clubs. If we can create a structure that has more clubs playing finals and grand finals and can increase the number of clubs being promoted and relegated to find their best level of competition, the overall result should be much more effective competitions across the board. Feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Discussions around the possibility of 16-a-side for our competition have been on the record for the last couple of years. While this may seem a big change from tradition, given that we have over 80% of our grounds less than 85% the size of the MCG, and with
game styles such as presses and floods becoming the norm, we believe it is worth considering. We watched with interest the recent success of 16-a-side in the AFL Women’s exhibition game and read comments from respected Geelong coach Chris Scott and AFL GM-FO Mark Evans advocating for a trial at AFL level. What also drove home the impact of our small grounds was an observation by former Vermont stars Ryan Mullett, Nathan Henley and Kris Bardon during the EFL finals last year. Having moved down to the peninsula to play, they said that ground size, space to move and reduced congestion were the key differences. Contested footy on small grounds can be brutal for players, umpires and supporters. Some minor changes were made to match timings this year in the under 19s and reserves resulting in over 3,000 hours of volunteer time being saved, without impacting the integrity of the games. Research continues on a range of other potential initiatives such as the role of percentage in junior footy and the use of high density rules such as those used in the TAC Cup, to assess whether we can create an even more optimum environment for our players to develop and learn. As a league, the EFL continues to evolve. Our netball competition has grown to 49 clubs across 6 divisions with a further increase likely, again next year. Attending the excellent grand final night, the standard was high, support was very good and engaging these ladies and their families in our clubs will only benefit everyone in the long term. Female footy is exploding. The Eastern Region Girls Competition, a merged entity of the EFL and AFL Yarra Ranges, was implemented in 2016 to capitalize on the anticipated growth in female participation. From 12 teams in 2015, it grew to 37 in 2016, with indications for 2017 suggesting similar growth again. The introduction of the AFL Women’s National League to be played in February and March next year will no doubt provide great promotion and coverage for female footy and should assist all clubs, new and existing, in their efforts to get teams on the park. While planning initially targeted 2018 for significant

From the Chairman expansion of senior women’s footy in the East, the level of interest amongst clubs for 2017 will probably see this brought forward. Our focus remains constant on our core game also. This year we invested in further game development resources to boost our exposure into more schools and help develop programs to encourage more kids to play footy and clubs to engage closely with their local Auskick centres. Team numbers in our non-competitive age groups remain at record highs with 113 teams entered in under 8, 9 and 10 and we introduced an Auskick under 7’s program to help bridge the gap between Auskick and club footy. A research project surveying those who have ceased playing in recent years is underway to help guide future player retention strategy. Our work in game development alongside AFL Victoria will remain a key focus over the next few years. The league would particularly like to thank all of our loyal sponsors for their support again in 2016. We welcomed Bendigo Bank on board as naming rights partner this year and with their investment in the league and our clubs, their support of community sport in Melbourne’s East is very significant. We have long standing relationships with Channel Nine, BJS Insurance, Eastlink, Yarra Valley Water, Trojan Tools and SEN 1116, along with a range of other valued partners listed at the back of the record. Their investment in our competition allows us to deliver and fund much of the work outlined above and is very much appreciated by the league and our clubs. We thank Knox Council and Bayswater FC for helping

us host today’s game, one the biggest events held annually in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and one which requires a significant amount of planning and effort to present. Discussions are underway with the relevant authorities for the potential upgrading and enhancement of several existing facilities within the EFL competition, similar to the improvements made at Bayswater in the past. We will also continue to emphasise the need for the development of a first class training and admin facility in the East, the only major geographical area of greater Melbourne to be deficient in this regard. I wish to thank my fellow Board Members, a diverse and talented group, the Junior Committee lead so well by Leon Bailey, and the EFL staff for their combined efforts this year. As the league gets bigger, so too does the workload. Congratulations to Ferntree Gully, Upper FTG and Bayswater on their recent premiership victories. It no doubt caps off years of hard work by many people on and off the field. Also notable was Donvale’s under 19 premiership victory given the club was in recess only two years ago. Finally, to the volunteers who are the heart and soul of EFL footy & netball, I say thank you for your valued contribution. We are all proud to be part of the EFL family and it is the cumulative efforts of our clubs and the league that helps maintain the leagues wonderful standing in the wider community. Thank you all for your support in 2016 and we look forward to three great games today.
EFL FINALS INFORMATION The last weekend of the 2016 Bendigo Bank Eastern Football League Senior Finals series is HERE! FINALS ENTRY The following entry prices (including GST) will apply: GRAND FINALS
ADULT CONCESSION** $15.00^ $9.00^
- Children under the age of 16 are admitted FREE to all finals. - ** Concession includes age pension cards, Veteran Affairs cards and disability pension cards - ^ $2 from the entry price of all grand finals will be donated to the Blue Ribbon Foundation
CAR PARKING AT FINALS VENUES Car parking inside finals venues may be limited. This will be communicated via the website and to competing clubs in the week leading up to the game. With much larger crowds than for home and away games, don’t assume you will be able to get a park inside most venues as this will not be the case. Councils have also advised that a parking officer will be in attendance, so park only in designated areas. NO DOGS Dogs are banned at all EFL games. ALCOHOL AT FINALS VENUES Patrons attending finals are not permitted to bring alcohol into the venues. At venues where cars have access to the grounds, a condition of entry is that boots are inspected and this will be rigidly enforced.
Apart from ensuring compliance with liquor licensing and council by-laws, it helps to protect clubs revenues from finals. As in past years, there will be a two-can limit on purchases and all alcohol sold will be opened by bar staff on purchase. These are part of the licensing requirements. ONE PAYMENT PER VENUE We’ll again be adopting an approach where your admittance will allow entry for the full day at that particular venue. Each venue has its own admission fee, so if you choose to move between venues you’ll, need to pay a second entry. FINALS UMPIRES The league will supply three field, two boundary and two goal umpires for each finals match. STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH FINALS SCORES Want to know the live scores of other ‘Bendigo Bank’ finals? The EFL Media Team will be using Twitter to bring you all the Around the Grounds Scores. They will be ‘tweeting’ live quarter by quarter scores and ‘re-tweeting’ EFL clubs and fans who are keeping the social media world up-to-date with how their team is performing. But you don’t have to sign up to a Twitter account to get access to live scores! Type in m.efl.org.au in your smartphone’s internet browser and follow the prompts to save as an app. Tap ‘Social’ then ‘Twitter’ – presto, you’ve got live scores!

BOUNDARY BANTER
Ray Baird
RB: I just love this time of year BWS. The big crowds and best teams go at it, not to mention I don’t have to see your ugly mug for another 6 months either!
BWS: I can assure you the feeling is mutual! So many highlights to pick from mate across all divisions, let’s start in division 4 and what most stood out to you? RB: I was absolutely rapt to see Surrey Park take the next step this year BWS. 10 wins on the board and only narrowly missed the finals which is a huge step in the right direction for the Panthers. BWS: Spot on mate, a great effort by all at the club who have been through the tough times and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It was also great to see the Glen Waverley Hawks play finals again after a 3 year hiatus. They may have gone straight out in week 1, but a vast improvement on recent seasons and they will be there abouts again next year no doubt. RB: How good was the grand final between Ferntree Gully and Forest Hill?! It was one of the classics. BWS: One of my favourite games to call ever mate. Who would have thought the Eagles would have to work so hard to progress after going through the home and away season undefeated. Epic clash from 2 sides who gave their all right throughout the year. RB: Division 3 was as entertaining as ever this season BWS, but there was no bigger highlight then watching Upper Ferntree Gully have the perfect season and advance into division 2. BWS: One of only 15 clubs in EFL history to go undefeated right through the season Raymond. Hats off to Chad Rogers, Andy Hayman and co to lead this club back up to where it belongs in the higher divisions. It’s
www.efl.org.au
another case of close but no cigars for Tempy though isn’t it? RB: They will be heartbroken won’t they? But good clubs pick themselves back up and Templestowe have been in Ben Warren-Smith this position multiple times Broadcast Manager in recent years and haven’t fallen off the perch. They are a club who are superbly lead by senior coach Rick Irwin who no doubt will have to boys focused for another big crack in 2017. BWS: How good was Ringwood’s finish to the year?! They came from nowhere to make the finals and missed out on the grand final by a kick! RB: No one gave them a yelp mate, that’s two years in a row the Redback’s have flashed home. If they can get off to a good start next year they will take some beating. BWS: Division 2 was filled to the brim with highlights this year mate, what satisfied you the most? RB: Donny East getting knocked out of the finals would have to be the top of the list BWS! No I’m just kidding! Got a lot of time for the Lions, but it does give me pure enjoyment to stir you up about them every chance I get. BWS: Senior citizens are supposed to be nice mate, but you go a long way in tarnishing that theory! Didn’t you pick Doncaster East to win the flag at the start of the year? RB: I don’t know how many times I have to say it… I tipped Bayswater to win the flag and then you changed it in the record in round 1 and screwed me over. BWS: People will believe what they want to believe mate… Huge congratulations to Baysie who were clearly the side to beat for most of the season. Lead brilliantly from Paul McCormack and Joel Galvin who have this club ready to play in the premier division, and not just to make up the numbers also.

BWS: Well here we are old mate, another season gone and what a season it has been!
from page 5
BOUNDARY BANTER RB: It was sad to see East Burwood get relegated, however I think it is a good thing for the club to build its way back up, get some wins back on the board and see old players and fans come through the gate. A feat that shouldn’t be too difficult for a proud club such as the Rams and wasn’t the whole EFL community thrilled when they notched their 1 and only win in round 13. BWS: Croydon made a late dash knocking off 3 of the top 4 teams leading into the finals and only just missed out on a finals appearance. Reckon there was a few sighs of relief they fell short. RB: 100% BWS. Sensational end for the Blues but it means nothing if you don’t make it. Senior coach and media team favourite Paul Newlands has moved on to coach Kilsyth, and it’s the right time for Croydon to change things up as they look towards entering back up division 1 in the near future. BWS: Today’s big division 1 grand final is always the best day of the year. But before we get onto that there are some highlights that need to be noted. For me watching Doncaster step up to the big league and deliver consistently and play finals was amazing. RB: We have seen it happen before with the division 2 premier coming up and playing finals the next year with the weighted draw, but I get the feeling the Sharks won’t be one hit wonders and will be thereabouts again next year. BWS: The top 5 was as close as I can remember this year wasn’t it? RB: As good as it’s been for a long time mate. From 1st to 5th was a raffle every week and who would beat who as on their day their best footy was as good as one another’s. BWS: Well two of those have made the big dance today and thoroughly deserve their chance at Premiership glory. Who wins and why old man? RB: Well the old foes go at it again don’t they? Vermont have held top spot for most of the year, but Balwyn have a knack for winning the big 6
The Eastern Footballer
games. I think the Tigers can do it again and send outgoing senior coach Dan Donati out on the highest of notes. It’s sure to go down to the wire with Balwyn to get up by 3pts. BWS: It just feels right that we end the year disagreeing with each other. Vermont have had two weeks off leading into this game and will be super fresh, while Balwyn have played 3 tough finals. There’s just something about the Eagles on Grand Final day and the Purple and Gold army will be out in force to cheer their boy’s home by 12pts. RB: I’d offer to put a wager on it but you haven’t paid up for the last bet yet! BWS: Don’t know what you’re talking about mate? RB: Yeah I know your type BWS. BWS: Smart, funny and good looking…? RB: You wish mate. But in all seriousness it’s been a fun and entertaining year with yourself and the team, but I reckon at 70yrs old I might be getting too old for this. BWS: Never! After taking out the Clinton Grybas media award on Chandler Medal night, that only means you need to pick up your game even more in 2017! No excuses! RB: We’ll see… I was very humbled to win the award mate especially when it was voted for by all my peers. BWS: Thoroughly deserved old timer, you’re an absolute star and one of my best mates. I was just disappointed you didn’t dedicate it to me! RB: Mate Donny East had more of a chance 10 goals down it the last against Wanny Sth then that ever happening! BWS: Fair play. Thanks for a great year Raymond and let’s hope today’s game is a cracker! RB: See you at the footy mate!

STATSBENCH Relax, as you were everyone, normal transmission has resumed. Vermont is back in a Grand Final. Most people would have just called it an El Niño event while Vermont supporters have called it a drought – three years in a row Noel McPhee @statsbench without being in the final game of the season. The behemoth of the EFL returns to their most productive stage and faces a strong challenger to their previously undisputed reign as the ‘king’ of EFL Premierships. What a game it promises to be. I don’t think anyone can confidently predict the winner with any degree of certainty. Facts: Vermont have won all their close games this season; Balwyn beat Vermont up rather badly in round 16; Balwyn have Grand Final integrity – three of the last four, four of the last eight; Vermont have Grand Final integrity – 19 EFL Premierships.

120 Minutes By David McPherson Eagles’ captain Tim Johnson isn’t a subscriber to the belief that the difference in pre-game preparation will alter the outcome of the match, although he did admit that the breaks meant two less opportunities for injuries to pile up. “There’s a couple of ways to look at it [the week off ]. There’s always the school of thought that hopefully we’re going to have fresh legs and that sort of thing and be running on top of the ground, but then I guess the flipside is we haven’t played a lot of game time in the past three weeks,” he said. “I think ultimately it doesn’t make too much difference in the end. It’s just going to be about who can start well and then maintain their pressure and intensity around the ball.” Johnson won’t be fuelled by a desire for revenge on Saturday after the Eagles were knocked out of last year’s finals race by Balwyn, saying instead that he felt the lure of a premiership medallion more strongly. “For us we’re going to go just as hard at Balwyn as we would be if Noble Park had been the ones to get through or any other team. I think what’s on the line – winning a premiership – far outweighs who your opposition is and any motivation you get from beating a specific opposition.” The key to success for Johnson and his team involves simply going about business as usual. “I think that when we’ve had success against Balwyn this season we haven’t necessarily invented anything new or done anything differently to how we’ve played other teams and other games,” he said. “In the semi-final we were just able to do 12
The Eastern Footballer
the things that we wanted to do but do them for a bit longer and that was the difference in the end.” “You look for, especially from an outside perspective, something spectacular or something unusual that’s going to win a game of footy, but most of the time in big games it’s just doing the little things well. Things like sticking your tackles and applying good pressure throughout the game and obviously taking opportunities in front of goal.” When the teams are this close, and the outcomes of 113 games are already in the books, the season may come down to just one of those little moments. Every bounce of the ball can lead to harrowing defeat or exaltation. Every tackle, every pressure act and every opportunity in front of goal provides the chance for someone to put full stop on the season that was. The question now is just to whom the opportunity will fall, and if they will take it with both hands.
120 Minutes Everything will come down to 120 minutes of football. Four quarters of blood, sweat and tears – to the winner goes the spoils. That is, unless, the match ends in a draw like it did when the two clubs faced off in round four earlier on this year, in which case more time may be required. The two powerhouse clubs have almost been inseparable this year, with the latest battle between the Tigers and Eagles ending in a three-point semifinal win to Vermont. Balwyn captain Rennie Gilchrist insists that giving up an 18-point final-change lead in that encounter has not rattled his team heading into this weekend’s all-or-nothing face-off. “It didn’t shake us too much. Losses are really good because that’s when you review games and look at areas that you were poor in so you can improve the next week which is what we did,” he said. Gilchrist says the Tigers will draw upon their wealth of experience in the heat of battle to ensure the team says composed in the crucible of finals intensity.
“Obviously in the grand final there’s more pressure around and more on the line of course, and usually the team who wins is the team who is most composed. It’s about relaxing, knowing how to play and sticking to our processes and trusting one another throughout that 120 minutes,” he said. “I think experience is just good for knowing what to expect from grand finals and knowing how to win I guess. It’s a certain confidence that the guys around you are going to do their all to win because they’ve done it before.” Gilchrist highlighted the importance of winning the midfield battle in the Tigers quest to get their claws on the cup. “It’s always won or lost in the midfield and that encompasses skill level, stoppages, transition ball movement and executing pressure,” he said. “Whichever midfield can get on top and have more of an influence will probably win the game.” Balwyn will enter Saturday on the back of three consecutive finals games, all decided by a margin of less than six goals. Despite the full schedule, Gilchrist insists that his team is full of run and ready for the fight. “We’re all pretty fresh. We’ve been recovering really well on Tuesday nights and doing extra sessions on Sunday as well so the boys are feeling really good.” In contrast, Vermont enters the game with just one finals appearance under its belt having finished atop the ladder and earning direct advancement to the grand final with its semi-final win.

MEDIA TIPS Phil Murton – Eastern Football League CEO Balwyn by 5 points First Goal: Nathan Gordon (Balwyn) Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medal: Rennie Gilchrist (Balwyn) Could go either way and will be less than one goal margin but think Balwyn might just get over the line. Talent everywhere for both teams makes them hard to split but Balwyn look to have a bit more firepower up forward. Just like Greig and Froud used to get the Eagles over the line in close games, think Gobbels, Broadhurst and Gordon might do the same for the Tigers.
V
Dyson Baker Eastern Football League Media Manager Vermont by 2 points First Goal: Shaun Cross Cliff Tomkins/Blue Ribbon Medal: Darcy Crocker (Vermont) The modern day champs (Balwyn) take on the champion club (Vermont) – It’s the fitting way to end season 2016. For mine Vermont have not put a foot wrong, and although Balwyn will give them a shake it would be remise of me to tip against the Eagles. It wasn’t that long ago that Vermont walked into Bayswater Oval with an air of swagger and confidence about them, if they win here this afternoon this young group of fledgling Eagles could see the same success as those who have pulled on the Purple and Gold before them. Ben Warren-Smith – Eastern Football League Broadcast Manager Vermont by 2 goals First Goal: Jake Best Cliff Tomkins/Blue Ribbon Medal: Tom Schneider (Vermont) It doesn’t get any bigger then Vermont v Balwyn and today’s game promises to be one of the games of the year! Balwyn are looking to make it back to back and 4 flags in 5 years and send outgoing senior coach Dan Donati off in style. They will have to do it the hard way, having already played 3 tough finals including a loss two weeks ago to the Eagles. Vermont have led the pack all year and deserve to go into today’s game as favourite. Australia’s most successful

local footy club always seem to find something extra on grand final day and today will be no different. Vermont to win a classic by 12pts.
Ross Couzens – Inside Football Balwyn by 7 points First goal - Kirby McConnon (Vermont) Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medal: Rennie Gilchrist (Balwyn) Historically it’s always been a safe bet to take any Vermont side in a grand final, but with Balwyn playing its final game under Daniel Donati the emotion of the day should carry a battle-hardened Tigers outfit over the line. Eamonn O’Molloy – Leader Newspapers Balwyn by two goals First goal: Jeff Gobbels Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medal: Rennie Gilchrist (Balwyn) Vermont have been the more consistent all season but after watching how the Tigers performed at this stage last year I just can’t tip against them. The stat that stands out from the game two weeks ago is their 19 inside 50s to the Eagles’ three in the third quarter - and Balwyn don’t tend to make the same mistakes twice. Ray Baird – EFL Media Team Tigers by 3 points Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medal: John Meesen (Balwyn) This is going to be the tight Grand Final that we all have been waiting for, expect it to go down to the wire, less than a kick in it at the final siren. Most people may think that the team having the rest are in the best position to win. However Balwyn’s finals campaign has gained the momentum to get the job done. One can never underestimate the Tigers finals record. Wayne Brasher – EFL Media Team Vermont by 1 point Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medal: Adam Parker (Vermont) The reigning premiers Balwyn have shown this season that they thoroughly deserve their place in today’s match. Their opponents Vermont have also been rewarded for their consistency after being top of the ladder for nearly the entire
MEDIA TIPS home and away season. Both sides have had injury concerns throughout the year which adds another interesting talking point to what is already an intriguing contest. Expect this game to be tight affair in the early stages as both backlines will want to impose their imprimatur on the contest. If Balwyn get on a roll early in the second half they will be hard to stop, however If Vermont can remain composed and be within striking distance at the last break I feel they can run the game out as they have had the better preparation. I’m tipping Vermont to win by the barest margin in what is shaping as a classic encounter. Joshua Dawe – EFL Media Team Balwyn by 15 points Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medal: Nathan Gordon While Vermont got the chocolates in the semifinal a few weeks ago, Balwyn’s first quarter demolition of the Eagles in Round 17 is still very fresh in my mind. The Tigers have an innate ability to turn it on when it really matters, like they did last week against Noble Park and
having been there and done it so many times over the last 5 years, I’m backing them in to clinch it again. Davis Harrigan – EFL Media Team Vermont by 10 points Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medal: Connor McCafferty (Vermont) Vermont have pressed all season and grabbed all their deserved rewards along the way. Balwyn have been the “Mr Consistent” of the past five years - they’re the side that never goes away. Daniel Donati has led his troops through some ups and downs in 2016, with some scares along the way, but they’ve pushed through. Experience counts in Grand Finals, and while the Tigers lead that front, Vermont have been on the “fringe” for several years - and now they’ve grabbed their chance. The younger legs of the Eagles will see them fly out of the gate, but Balwyn know how to play the four quarters - so does Vermont, who will want to deny Balwyn another piece of silverware. Game will be won in defence, in both arcs of the ground.

BLACKBURN: Last week the U19s battled valiantly against a strong Noble Park team and went down by a couple of goals in what was a great Preliminary Final at Bayswater. The Coach Mat Eccles, leadership group and players are to be congratulated in maintaining a high standard of Div. 1 football over a long season and performing admirably in the finals, beating Doncaster and Norwood comfortably in the first couple of weeks. They will form a solid core of players in the years to come to help the Burners compete at a high level in the completion. Today marks a special culmination for our 12’ O’Clockers – Development side, ably led by the meticulous Alan Love (Coach) and assistants Cuz and Big Johnnie who have managed a strong group of talented players, ready to take the battle up to a fired up Rowville, after they defeated Vermont in last week’s Preliminary Final. It’s a testament to the Club that we have had 54 players play in the team over the course of the season with 38 players being qualified to pull on the jumper and backing their team mates every week whilst supporting the great culture that our community club has to offer. Today’s opponent Rowville showed in our Round 15 fixture that are capable of combining quick ball movement with key forward targets to challenge any opposition. It will be an enthralling contest early as both teams will look to gain the ascendancy in the midfield and give their forwards every opportunity to get on the scoreboard early and create a few mind games. All players, spectators and friends are welcome to come back to the Club for refreshments after the game – All the best boys and congratulations on a fabulous season in 2016 Let’s go Burners! Future player related functions include Sunday 18th September (day after EFL GF) - Vote Count and Friday 23rd Sept - Presentation Night. There will be more information to follow in the weeks to come. Upcoming social events include our much anticipated Grand Final Eve Lunch - Friday 30th September with special guest speaker and number one horse trainer Darren Weir who will bringing the 2015 Melbourne Cup along with him for discussions about its history and some photo opportunities along the way. ‘Milly’ is set to play in his 5th straight Div 1 GF this week. Already a three time premiership player, you’ll see Milly creating and working hard at both ends of the ground. His experience on the biggest stage is vital to the teams success. #3 – Michael Osborne ‘Ossie’ is an AFL premiership player and brings with him a wealth of experience in big games at the highest level. In his first year at BFC, look for a big impact on Grand Final day. #4 – Jeff Gobbels A three time premiership star, Div 1 leading goal kicker in 2016 and this years Interleague Captain. There’s not much ‘Gobes’ hasn’t achieved in his 100+ games at the Tiges, so expect another blinder from the comps premier CHF. 5th straight GF appearance. #5 – Taylor Gilchrist A former Box Hill utility, ‘Tay’ is a two time premiership star with BFC and also doubles as little bro to skipper Rennie! Tay is a hard running mid/defender that gives his all to every single contest and is a proven GF player after he starred in the 2013 Premiership. #6 – Nathan Gordon ‘Nippa’ joined the Tiges this season fresh off the Richmond AFL list. He has had an immediate impact on the group becoming one of the competitions most dynamic and exciting players. He brings along his own cheer squad each week and they are sure to be in full voice on the biggest day of the year! #7 – Blake Broadhurst ‘Broady’ will saddle up for his 4th straight GF on Saturday. As far as experience in big games goes, no-one has played in more senior Finals over their career than this man. He’ll use all of his tricks this week as he tries to help the Tiges get over the line in yet another GF. #8 – Rod Crowe The General. ‘Crowey’ sets the scene in big games. Has done right throughout his career. A three time VFL premiership player, a three time EFL premiership player and an unbelievable contribution to the BFC. This will be Crowey’s 5th straight EFL Div 1 GF appearance – what an achievement by this backline star. #9 – Kris Pendlebury ‘Kritta’ hasn’t skipped a beat this season. Highly regarded as the competition’s best defender, Kritta takes on the best forwards week in and week out. A booming right fist, a penetrating right boot and an all-round superstar of local football. #11 – Jarrad Wright Another with a wealth of finals experience on the BFC list. ‘Wrighty’ is your ultimate team man. Does the jobs that others can’t. Ultra competitive, impossible to shift and an out and out defensive gun. 2 time premiership player looking to add a third. #12 – Renwick Watts Dual Premiership player who plays with all heart and soul on his sleeve. The ultimate competitor and teammate, you know he’ll be there when you need him most. Plays bigger than he is and highly respected by his peers. #13 – Cristian Sanfillipo ‘Crisso’ plays his 100th game in the GF and will play it like he has his other 99 - With everything he has. A Vice Captain, three time premiership player and one of the most popular amongst his peers, Crisso will be in everything. #14 – Tom Roach ‘The legend’ as he’s affectionately known, will be trying to add to his impressive CV of premierships across the VFL, WAFL and EFL. Leg speed to burn, gut running at its best, just get the ball to him and watch him go! #16 – Daniel Hughes ‘Hughesy’ is in his first year at the Tiges and has been an integral part of the most dangerous forward set-up in the comp. Courageous as any when it’s his turn to go, Hughesy is a workhorse. Doesn’t stop and is primed for the biggest day of the year. #17 – Rennie Gilchrist ‘Ren’ was this year crowned the ‘Captain of the Century’ at BFC’s gala evening, a fitting title for such an admired player. He will lead his troops into his 5th straight GF as Captain this week. The skipper is a three time premiership player and a two time Blue Ribbon medalist. Loves this stage. #20 – Liam Frazer ‘Fraz’ was given the honour of taking on the famous #20 jumper at BFC passed down by the great Allan Murray and he hasn’t disappointed. Fraz is already a two time premiership player and will add run, carry and hardness in the biggest game off the year. #21 – Shaun MacDonald ‘Shauny’ is one of a crop of impressive younger boys that have come through BFC’s under 19’s over the last few years. Shauny has played a couple of ripping finals so far and adds real pace and youthfulness to the BFC line-up. #23 – Marc O’Regan Is there a tougher and harder competitor in the EFL? For five years now, ‘Reags’ has endured contest after contest after contest. He will play his 100th game this week and has been one of BFC’s unheralded stars in its most successful era. #28 – Lachie Bain After being agonisingly close to Senior selection in last years Finals series, Bainy has been able to crack a spot in the senior side in 2016. A big improver, Bainy has been a crucial cog in the BFC armour with is relentless pressure and ball use. #29 – Jason Kennedy Tough, hard, uncompromising. ‘Kanga’ is contested ball nut. Fearless in his attack on the man and the ball, he is sure to be seen at the bottom of a few packs this week. A player you’d want to run out beside - you just know exactly what he’s going to give you. #30 – Jackson Weatherald 2016 Interleague Rep, 2016 State Rep and sure to be named again in the Div 1 team of the year, ‘Jacko’ is a ball magnet. Deadly left foot kick, huge workrate and has been an integral part of the success of BFC over the past three seasons. #36 – John Meesen Big ‘Soup’ announced himself in 2015 as the premier ruckman in the competition and has backed up that mantle in his second year at BFC. A tireless worker, Soupy gives his mids first use all day and is a massive presence all over the ground. #39 – Glen Chivers ‘Boomers’ ‘Bus’ ‘Chiv’! First year player at the club, big Chiv has played pivotal roles up forward, down back and in the ruck. Highly experienced player that is sure to have a big impact on the biggest day of all. #43 – Jayme Gottliebsen Another in the ‘three time’ premiership player bracket, ‘Gobby’ has become the senior player he was always going to be in 2016. Stronger, fitter and faster, Gobby has gone from strength to strength and will hope to add another flag to his record. #58 – Shaun Cross Mr Consistent, ‘Crossy’ has put together another blinder of a season. Yet to miss a single game since joining the Tiges in 2014, Crossy has won the past two B&F’s and is set to play another starring role in his third straight GF.

EFL UMPIRES EFL FIELD UMPIRES : Dan Beard: Dan umpired his first Div 1 grand final as a17 year old and then went to the VFL where he umpired 220 senior games before returning to the EFL. Since returning Dan has umpired the last 6 div 1 grand finals, today will bring up his 7th in a row. Andrew Gillies: Andrew has umpired over 150 games and umpired 2 grand finals, today sees him doing his first div 1 grand final, a consistent year has seen him being rewarded accordingly. Dan Wild: Dan has umpired 265 games and 5 grand finals, also doing his first div 1 grand final, an experienced hard working umpire who is being rewarded for his consistent year GOAL UMPIRES: ASHLEY POWNEY Ashley commenced his goal umpiring career in 2004 and has steadily worked his way to become a 1st division goalie for many years. His commitment, dedication, work effort and ability has been the reason why he has been appointed to the 1st division senior Grand Final for this season. This follows up his first Senior Grand Final appointment last year. Ashley is a quiet, unassuming person whose interests outside of umpiring evolve around chasing tornadoes in the United States. He will represent his peers to the highest degree. DAVID PARKER David commenced his umpiring career in 2001 and in that time has been a 1st division umpire for many years. He has umpired numerous finals and Grand Finals over his career and this will be his 3rd, Division I Senior Grand Final. David is highly respected amongst his peers and is an active participant as a member of the Leadership Goal Umpires group. Outside of umpiring, David’s interests are playing cricket for Noble Park ,is a passionate Hawthorn supporter and is on the EFLUA committee. David has thoroughly deserved this opportunity and together with Ashley, will be a strong goal umpiring team representing their fellow goal umpires. BOUNDARY UMPIRES: Tristan Webb: Boundary umpire of the year 2016. Tristan has captured off a stunning season, which has seen him officiate in every home and away game in 1st Division Seniors, and doubling up in the split round in Division 2. Tristan was nominated to attend the VFL as a Rookie boundary umpire throughout the season where he would attend several specialised training/-coaching sessions. His influence 28
The Eastern Footballer
amongst his peers as a leader speaks loudly of the character of the individual. Tristan’s performance this season reflects the success of last year, where he was also a member of the awesome foursome who umpired the senior grand final between Balwyn V Norwood. Pieter Van Pinxteren: In his own admission, Pieter had discussed his disappointment in his own preparation leading into Pre season this year, having not done a great deal of running or strength/ conditioning in the gym. We set some realistic tasks and a few small goals in which Pieter needed to continue to work on through out the course of the season. It wasn’t until after the split round, when I saw the true potential. He was set up each week to run against his peers in many of the top of the table clashes that lead into the finals. His presence in these games, are a testament to his commitment to keep working to the final siren!! Brodie Eccles: Anyone who has had the pleasure to meet this young man, can not but be impressed by his courtesy, mannerism and professionalism to which he takes his umpiring. Always one of the first to make it to training, Brodie to some are without fault, except his coach. I had to address a certain issue to which had lead to many discussions, sometimes arguments about the importance of warm ups before throws training, which in the middle of winter and executing such a ballistic movement could lead to injury….. (Squad laughs). Brodie has had an interrupted season with a stress response of the foot from Rd5-9, and shortly after in Round 13 suffered a collapsed lung (diagnosed as a virus), he has worked his fitness and game back to be part of this year’s big dance!! William Caldwell: A senior statesmen of the boundary squad, William commenced his umpiring at EFL in 2010, and has combined goal umpiring with the Southern juniors on a Sunday for the same length of time. Anyone who knows Will knows his passion: all things umpiring/ footy and his beloved EPL team Manchester United. Will’s appointment to this years senior Grand Final, has been due to his determination to keep striving to achieve his goal. Doing everything asked of him, in his preparation during the week and on game day. William’s attention to detail and professionalism is a reflection of the success he wants for himself. This week’s Grand final will be William’s highest accolades, and will be jointly celebrated by his loving and caring mother Kim, who has not missed a single game in William Umpiring career.

Cameron Manuel
Over 450 people packed Manningham Function Centre on Wednesday night for the Eastern Football Leagues biggest evening of the year. Highlights of the season were played for the crowd and the night had begun, EFL Media Manager Dyson Baker opened the night introducing the nights MC. Comedian Evan Hocking greeted the audience before handing over the Chairman of the Eastern Football League Graham Halbish who commended the tireless efforts over the 2016 season. The night kicked off with the league recognizing the efforts of the best Under 21’s in the competition – Noble Parks Ben Giobbi and Coldstream’s Darcy Carrigan named this seasons Leader Young Guns. Presenting the next lot of awards was simple, the All Trophies Goal kicking had clearly already been determined; Carnelley, King, Limbach and Gobbels sounds like a pretty solid forward line, and accordingly were all awarded their plaques
