INSIDE THE EFL Remember to say thanks… Saturday was a great day at the Division Four Grand Finals. While some early drizzle made life a touch uncomfortable early in the under 19s, the record crowd of almost 4,000 were treated to three high quality games of footy played in great spirit on field and supported in a similar manner Phil Murton off it. EFL Chief Executive Officer On the Friday night before the netball season came to its conclusion with two great games in Division One and Two, with the Eastern Lions and Chirnside Park winning their respective divisions. The standard of our netball has increased significantly in just 12 months and it was pleasing to hear some positive comments from the Eastern Lions coach, an experienced netball person, regarding the organisation, standard and quality of our growing competition. Also on Friday night was the Junior Presentation Night. It was great to see the young boys and girls of our competition present themselves and their clubs so well and hear club Presidents talk proudly of the success of their sides this year. Amongst it are some great stories. Lysterfield won the Gordon Parker Best Conducted Club Award, a wonderful achievement for a club who for the first time fielded teams in all age groups. New President Don Coulthard and his team are building on the great foundation and hard work of inaugural President Steve Ketzer and his committee. Kilsyth President Danny Lamb spoke of his clubs first junior premiership in 14 years, and the likely aim of fielding a team in each age group in 2016, for the first time in the clubs history. With the senior club travelling along well, there is plenty to like at what is happening at Pinks Reserve. What was evident on all occasions was the huge role Club Presidents play for their clubs. At times previously, when club Presidents have received a premiership medal during the presentation ceremony, I’ve heard people ask why. So it was great to hear Warrandyte President Stephen Bell receive a huge cheer when presented his medal on Saturday. Considering our clubs are volunteer run organisations, I couldn’t think
of anyone more deserving to be publicly recognized for their efforts. It always surprises me when the Club President wins the raffle or a major prize in a reverse draw, and everyone in the room looks at them as if expecting them to donate it back! From what I’ve seen, no one in the room deserves it more, and no one has probably brought more tickets than them either. Saying ‘thank you’ goes a long way. As Chairman Graham Halbish and I do the rounds at games each Saturday, we are often invited to club luncheons. With the support of Bendigo Bank Balwyn, Canterbury and Surrey Hills branches, we often present a “Club Volunteer Award”, nominated by clubs, to recognise an often unsung hero from the club in front of their peers. The response is fantastic, and often overwhelming for the recipient. Getting a huge cheer from the clubs faithful, you can see how much being acknowledged means to them. So as the season comes to an end and club presentation nights are held, celebrate the achievements of those on the field but remember the impact just saying thank you can have to the volunteers who have helped run your footy club for the year. Back on the field, we have three great days of footy this weekend with what look like, as you’d expect in finals, three evenly contested senior games. In the Division One Preliminary Final, either Balwyn or Vermont will have great pleasure in ending their rivals season. The “Doncaster Derby” in Division Two pits two in form teams against each other. Doncaster have been pretty convincing winners on the two occasions the teams met during the home and away season and were very impressive in the semi, but Donny East will come in with plenty of confidence after a strong last three weeks. While at the start of the day Mooroolbark Under 19’s look to make it a perfect, undefeated year, which should add plenty of excitement should it be close late in the game. And Sunday at East Burwood should be a great day in all three games, with the Mitcham v The Basin senior game looking to be an absolute cracker. See you at the footy.

FINALS INFORMATION The 2015 Eastern Football League senior Finals series is HERE!
Each venue has its own admission fee, so if you choose to move between venues you’ll, need to pay a second entry.
FINALS ENTRY The following entry prices (including GST) will apply:
FINALS UMPIRES The league will supply three field, two boundary and two goal umpires for each finals match.
ALL DIVISIONS FINALS GRAND FINALS VETERANS FINALS
ADULT CONCESSION** $13.00 $7.00 $15.00^ $9.00^ $5.00 N/A
• Children under the age of 16 are admitted FREE to all finals. ** Concession includes age pension cards, Veteran Affairs cards and disability pension cards ^ $2 from the entry price of all grand finals will be donated to the Blue Ribbon Foundation
CAR PARKING AT FINALS VENUES Car parking inside finals venues may be limited. This will be communicated via the website and to competing clubs in the week leading up to the game. With much larger crowds than for home and away games, don’t assume you will be able to get a park inside most venues as this will not be the case. Councils have also advised that a parking officer will be in attendance, so park only in designated areas.
STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH FINALS SCORES Want to know the live scores of other finals? The EFL Media Team will be using Twitter to bring you all the Around the Grounds Scores. They will be ‘tweeting’ live quarter by quarter scores and ‘re-tweeting’ EFL clubs and fans who are keeping the social media world up-to-date with how their team is performing. But you don’t have to sign up to a Twitter account to get access to live scores! Type in m.efl.org.au in your smartphone’s internet browser and follow the prompts to save as an app. Tap ‘Social’ then ‘Twitter’ – presto, you’ve got live scores!
NO DOGS Dogs are banned at all EFL games, including finals and alcohol is not permitted to be brought into any finals venue. It would be appreciated if all clubs would stress these points with both players and supporters. ALCOHOL AT FINALS VENUES Patrons attending finals are not permitted to bring alcohol into the venues. At venues where cars have access to the grounds, a condition of entry is that boots are inspected and this will be rigidly enforced. Apart from ensuring compliance with liquor licensing and council by-laws, it helps to protect clubs revenues from finals. As in past years, there will be a two-can limit on purchases and all alcohol sold will be opened by bar staff on purchase. These are part of the licensing requirements. ONE PAYMENT PER VENUE We’ll again be adopting an approach where your admittance will allow entry for the full day at that particular venue.

BOUNDARY BANTER BWS: One down – three to go Raymond RB: Best time of the year BWS, big crowds, great venues and quality teams all vying for the ultimate prize. BWS: What a performance it was by the Warrandyte Football Club in 2015. Three teams for three Premierships is a monstrous effort and hats go off to all involved down at the ‘Blood Bank’. Ray Baird RB: They came out very hungry for success this year Warrandyte after dropping out in straight sets last season. But that is a distant and irrelevant memory now and I reckon they will be very competitive in division 3 next year. BWS: I agree mate. Hopefully a few announced retirements have a bit of a rethink and decide to strap em on for another crack. RB: It always happens the night after the grand final win when a few beverages can persuade those to do it one more time. BWS: Once again Walker Park proved to be a fantastic atmosphere for the division 4 finals. RB: My mate G-Mac does a brilliant job all year round keeping the ground in top condition, and what a great sight it was to see all those red jackets and scarfs out in force to cheer their boys home. BWS: You’re not wrong mate and they were treated to some very exciting footy, particularly in the third term when they went bang! The two Tom’s in Naughtin and Appleby were superb as was the big ruckman David Hand. Gauci was electrifying, Ash Froud was Ash Froud and Chris Tout and Jacob Daley were sensational. A perfect finish to a brilliant year. RB: Bit of a surprise in division 3 last weekend see’s The Basin through to the Grand Final on Sunday at Mitcham out at East Burwood. Not many saw that coming. BWS: Yes and no. They did a Tempy on Tempy! Losing in the first week to Dockers comfortably, then reversing the result in the prelim like the Dockers did to Mitcham last year. The Bears have had a really strong 6 weeks - taking out that first final, and deserve to be there 100% RB: Mitcham will go in as strong favourites, but I believe that will suit The Basin just fine as they have been the underdogs for the past three weeks. BWS: Donny East are into their first Grand Final in ten years – ain’t life peachy! RB: You haven’t wiped that smile off your face for 7 days mate! A powerful performance again by the Lions against a Croydon side who had smashed them twice during the year could be just the tonic to see them knock over arch rivals in the big dance on Saturday. BWS: Croydon are a great club and one of my favourites, and I have no doubt they will be right up there again next season. RB: The same goes for Noble Park whose season ended at the hands of Vermont on the weekend. No one enjoys playing the Eagles in finals as they always seem to find something extra. BWS: The Bulls had a few key injuries, but I agree, Vermont are a scary site at this time of year and have players hitting great form at the right time. RB: How good was Bernie Dinneen in that game? BWS: What can you say except the guys an absolute marvel. I’ve never seen anyone attack the footy as hard as Bernie, he’s ferocious, calculated and a cool head at all times. What a story it would be if the boys from Terrara Road could send
6
him into retirement with another Premiership medallion. RB: It will be tough, but fairy tales are never easy! BWS: Norwood are straight through the granny and will be primed for back to back flags after knocking off minor premiers Balwyn by 3 pts. RB: Geez their last 2 months has been impressive the Norseman. Almost a full list to pick from finally after an Ben Warren-Smith interrupted year has the confidence of Broadcast Manager the team sky high. BWS: Three sensational games as you #LOVEITLOCAL this weekend mate, two Grand Finals and a Preliminary Final, all of which that could go either way. Who goes through to play Norwood in the division 1 Grand Final next Saturday? RB: I think Balwyn will bounce back this week BWS. They were only a kick away from having the week off and no doubt will be hungry to make amends. But as we said earlier Vermont lap it up on main stage and could pull it off, but think they will just fall short. BWS: Should be such an exciting game mate. A strong rivalry and a chance to go through to the Grand Final. Starting the game well is the key for both sides and if Balwyn have the lead at 3qrt time they will win as running out games has been a strong point for the Tigers all year. Balwyn by 5 goals for mine. RB: Can ‘our boys’ Doncaster East beat the all-conquering Doncaster? BWS: ‘Our boys’??? Finally jumping on are you after handing me back my slab? RB: I’m not handing over another one mate cos I’m officially on board! BWS: It’s a dream Grand Final for me mate. Played at Doncaster in the 90’s and lived in and barracked for Doncaster East for most of my life. Both are great clubs and any success is thoroughly deserved. In what will be the biggest Rod Gregory-Doug King Cup ever I’m sticking with Doncaster East to win by less than a kick. RB: I’ve been on and off the Lions all year but having watched them over the past few weeks I have noticed a real sense of belief amongst the playing group. Doncaster have had all the answers throughout 2015 and deserve to be favourites. I think momentum v the week off will favour Donny East and they will be playing in division 1 in 2016. BWS: No need to suck up to me now mate, there’s only one week left! RB: I don’t use straws BWS, unlike other people I know… BWS: Mitcham look to break the longest premiership drought in the league when they take on the Basin in the division 3 Grand Final. Almost a flawless season from the Tigers has them in the box seat to finally lift the Cup and progress to division 2. RB: This should also be a cracker mate. If The Basin can jump them early and create some doubt amongst the Mitcham playing group – then it’s officially game on. Can’t see the Tigers falling over though as they have too much class and reckon they will win. BWS: Both Grand Finals will be aired on 98.1FM all weekend and streamed live across the globe on efl.org.au – So you better bring your A-game old man! RB: The whole media team are pumped BWS and like the competing clubs, we are ready for the big stage. BWS: Exciting times indeed! See you at the footy mate!

STATS BENCH Two of the Leagues Finals powerhouses go head to head for a shot in Next week’s Grand Final. Vermont are currently in the midst of their longest premiership drought since the 1980’s which currently stands at 6 seasons. Balwyn on the other hand are breaking records of their own, notching up another year of finals action taking them to 20 consecutive years in finals action (SFL 1996-2006, EFL 2007- ) they play off for the chance to play in a fourth straight Grand Final, one away from their longest streak of five straight (SFL 1996-2000). Doncaster East have found form at the right end of the season, now on a winning stretch of five, including an early elimination final in round 18 plus two finals. What does that say about the team west of Doncaster East – the Sharks… They have gone about their business and have found form throughout the whole season – currently on a winning streak of 16 and unbeaten since round 1.
The most unwanted title in the EFL is the ‘longest Premiership drought’. Mitcham have had this monkey on their back since 2010 when Mulgrave broke their drought dating back to 1979. Since nearly suffering a triple drop in 2008, and surviving by percentage only in 2009 the Tigers have gradually built and now reach their first Grand Final since 1992. (They also held the longer Grand Final drought title – now passed to Eastern Lions (1995)). They face The Basin who have turned a loss in the finals into a second chance. The Bears have journeyed the hard way to the big stage while the Tigers will be nice and rested after just the one encounter. I’m getting a little nostalgic in my middle age so will break statsbench tradition of not taking sides and declare that I would like to see the Tigers win. CHANDLER/WRIGHT MEDAL PREVIEW Chandler Medal Night Preview With the Eastern Football League’s night of nights upon us, EFL Media Team member Aaron Kirkby-Rodier cast his keen eye over the likely chance across all four Divisions:
Chandler Medal (Division 1) With more star players than ever in Division 1 this season the Chandler Medal is anyone’s to take home. Starting from the top, Balwyn will have plenty of contenders and not many better than there captain Rennie Gilchrist who found himself in the best on 10 occasions this season. Keep an eye on Jeff Gobbels with 59 goals and 7 times in the best. Hot on their heels were Norwood and look no further than Leigh Williams with 79 goals and appearing in the best 9 times. Noble Park duo Shayne Allan and Kyle Martin kicked 55 and 54 goals respectively with Martin one of the red hot favourites also racking up 11 times in best. Vermont finished in fourth and Adam Parker is their best chance after having a fantastic start to the season and expect him to lead the count after 9 rounds. The big surprise packets of 2015 were Rowville and with Matt Robinson ineligible expect him still to poll well and also new recruit Cam Manuel. Blackburn’s ever reliable Kyle Matthews should poll well and young gun forward Jake Hammond also. Brett Johnson is Montrose best chance with 10 times in best and 33 goals to his name. North Ringwood had a tough year with injury but Jayden Van Unen looks to be their best bet. Knox superstar Luke Williams along with Lilydale’s Marcus Hottes were real shining lights during their clubs seasons and could be smokey’s for the medal with 14 and 9 appearances in best respectively. East Ringwood pair Dean Cleven and Chris Cerni could find themselves in the votes as could 2013 winner Daniel King. Winner: Kyle Martin - Noble Park Martin’s return to the EFL has been electrifying with the Bull combining midfield dominance with goals up forward, kicked 54 goals including at least 1 in every game and was a multiple goal kicker in 13 out of 18 games including a bag of 7 in Round 2. Roughie: Luke Williams - Knox Despite Knox only winning 5 games for 2015 Williams is a clear standout. In the best 14 times along with his ability to play any position on the ground gives him a real outside chance to take home the medal. 8
Wright Medal (Division 2) Another terrific season of Division 2 football and again a wide open medal. Doncaster stars Heath Scotland, Ewen McKenzie and Chris Annakis will all put their hand up with the latter booting 25 goals. Doncaster East star recruit Dean Limbach is a massive chance after slotting 92 goals during the season before breaking the ton during the finals. After a strong season Croydon might find it tough to win the medal with a lot of even performers with the best chances Josh Bolton and Patrick Travers. The Duck Wayne McInerney has been at his brilliant best this season with 62 goals and named in the best 5 times along with Jack Callanan booting 42 goals and 8 appearances in the best. Ben Carboni and Matt Sharpe have again had stellar season for the Waverley Blues and will give themselves every chance. Mooroolbark faithful will be hoping their star midfielder Mike Smith can bring them home a medal in 2015 with the classy left footer the Mustangs best chance. Luke Parker still continued on his form despite Mulgrave not making the finals with 10 times in the best. Dale Hehir continued to bang through the goals for Scoresby despite the Magpies betting relegated and he could make a run with a big second half of the year. East Burwood may find themselves with Craig O’Reilly and Mark Holland both having a strong chance with both the Rams having stellar seasons. Brayden Harkness had a super season for Wantirna South and will give the Devils a fighting chance. Winner: Heath Scotland – Doncaster Scotland has more than justified his high profile move to Shark Park this season with a stellar year. Appeared 6 times in the best along with goals to his name and the umpires will notice his sublime foot skills in a great year for Doncaster. Roughie: Mike Smith – Mooroolbark Smith is a genuine star racks up big disposal numbers as well as hitting the scoreboard. Kicked 4 goals against Bayswater in Round 5 and was in the best 8 times.

EDIE/JAMES MEDIAL PREVIEW With the Eastern Football League’s night of nights upon us, EFL Media Team member Aaron Kirkby-Rodier cast his keen eye over the likely chance across all four Divisions:
Edie Medal (Division 3)
James Medal (Division 4)
A finals race to the finish in Division 3 along with some stand out teams has seen one of the best seasons in recent memory. Mitcham have a host of players in the running with Chris Hoegal and Jarrod Witnish leading the pack. Templestowes slow start to the season could affect their chances but still have the Mariani boys in with a real show. Max Kruger again showed his class in season 2015 for the bears with a consistent season The Basin would hope he could bring home the medal after 10 appearances in the best. Upper Gully have a real chance with Tim Riseley the obvious candidate with a stellar season for the Kings. Trent Farmer led Ringwood to a finals birth in 2015 with 61 goals and 7 appearances in the best. Tyson McKenzie will poll well in Silvan’s first season in Division 3 as will Eddie Sim from Whitehorse. Will Debney (Park Orchards), Tom Rourke (Heathmont) and Jess Bolton (Boronia) will all give their respective clubs hope. South Belgrave have Leigh Odermatt and Alex Benbow in with a chance Odermatt kicking 63 goals and 9 times in the best. Chirnside Park have star recruits Zippy King and Jayden Battaglene flying the flag both should poll well.
What a season in Division 4 and a wide open James Medal. Warrandyte have a handful of stars that could win last years joint medallist Ross Ansaldi now a proven vote getter could go back to back with teammates Chad Gauchi and Ash Froud a big chance also. \Michael Paolini (Surrey Park) and Adam Amin (Glen W Hawks) have both had stellar seasons for their clubs and should all poll well. Kilsyth trio Ben Mullett, Sean Currey and Jay Sherlock all had brilliant years with the latter the red hot favourite for mine. Andrew Chalkley put in a great season for Nunawading while Coldstream pair Kane Jones 46 goals and Mark Cecere 31 goals showed their class throughout the season. Hayden DeGraaf should be the best placed Eastern Lion and last year’s winning duo from Forest Hill Kane Maghamez and Nicholas Pincott should rack up the votes again.
Winner: Alex Benbow - South Belgrave Hard to go past the tough nut from up the mountain. Despite the Saints not making the finals in 2015 Benbow puts in a shift every week with his consistent performances and occasionally hitting the scoreboard will give him a massive chance. Roughie: Jayden Battaglene – Chirnside Park A brilliant pick up for the Panthers in 2015 Battaglene has dominated the midfield and has hit the scoreboard. Already winning the clubs best and fairest comfortably look out for him to make a run at the medal.
10
Winner: Jay Sherlock – Kilsyth Sherlock has done it all this season for the Cougars, Kicked 67 goals during the season as well as giving Kilsyth some valuable time through the middle. In the best 13 times for his club shows what a fantastic season he has had will gain votes consistently but could poll big in back half of the season. Roughie: Chad Gauci – Warrandyte Not really a roughie seeing he’s from the premier but Gauci has been brilliant in season 2015. Super dangerous player finds his way out of stoppages with one of the best sidesteps in the competition. Can also play forward kicking 17 goals in a premiership year for the Bloods.

MEDIA TIPS – DIVISION 2 Dyson Baker – EFL Media Manager Sharks by 3 goals Like and elderly man mistaking the accelerator for the brake, Doncaster East have come crashing through walls to make the 2015 Grand Final. A side equipped to handle anything thrown at them has masterminded two sensational victories. Their opponents on the other hand can do no wrong and although nervous about the Lions, will not feel threatened, silky skills and poise to win this one, Sharks for mine! Gordon Parker/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Ewen McKenzie (Doncaster)
Ray Baird – EFL Media Team Doncaster East by 12 points Sometimes the unexpected happens in Grand Finals. I think that Donny East can match Doncaster and defeat them this week. Sure Doncaster have been the best team all season but i cannot ignore as to where Doncaster east have come from since mid-season. They playing a great brand of football and have the strength and bulk to match Doncaster. Momentum is in their favour and Doncaster had a very easy entry into today’s game, plus the weeks rest. Gordon Parker/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Jeremy Musso (Doncaster East)
V
Joshua Dawe – EFL Media Team Doncaster East by 6 points probably the toughest final to tip, the Lions were incredible against Croydon last week but the Sharks are clearly the favourites and have been the dominant team all year. Everyone loves an underdog, and with the way the Lions have found balance in their forward line over the last month, I’m backing Doncaster East by a straight kick. Gordon Parker/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Dylan Agnew (Doncaster East) Davis Harrigan – EFL Media Team Doncaster by 12 points A local derby brings spirit and some added pressure. Doncaster have some very sharp teeth and would be the rightful holders of the premiership cup after the four quarters on Saturday. However, they won’t be going down without being taken all the way to the finish by Doncaster East, with centurion Dean Limbach in the goal square. Ominous, deadly, and ready.
Will Taylor – EFL Media Team Doncaster Tormore Reserve will be the venue of a cracking Grand Final which will see the two Manningham Heavyweights between Doncaster and Doncaster East. Doncaster have dominated this season and cruising past Croydon by over 18 goals in week 1 of the finals. Dean Limbach and Shane Tennant has had an awesome season in their first season at Doncaster East while Nathan Thompson and Chris Annakis has done the job for Doncaster. Sharks will be way too good in Division 2 Grand Final and win their first premiership in Division 2 since 1990. Gordon Parker/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Chris Annakis (Doncaster)
Lachlan Munro – EFL Media Team Doncaster by 28 points The Sharks have made their name well known in Division 2 this season, with only 1 loss for the year. After demolishing Croydon in the semi-final, it was made very clear that Doncaster is definitely in a league of their own this year. They are the most deserving side to go into Division 1. Doncaster East were very impressive against Croydon and Bayswater, and they do come into this game with some form, but they will fall short to the Sharks. Gordon Parker/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Chris Annakis (Doncaster)
Brad Henderson – EFL Media Team Doncaster by 37 points Doncaster have clearly been the best team in second division this year, and with stunning form in recent weeks combined with a week off to refresh and get over any niggling injuries, it is all set up for them to win the Grand Final and move into the top flight. I expect a high scoring and quite free flowing contest early, before both teams tighten up their defence and for the game to become more congested the further it goes. Doncaster East will do themselves proud but won’t quite be able to match the class and professionalism of the Sharks. Dean Limbach looms as the obvious danger man but I feel the Sharks have the talent down back to hold him to a four or five goal day, which on this occasion won’t be enough. Some late goals from Doncaster may make the final margin sound more inflated than is fair to the Lions. Gordon Parker/Blue Ribbon Medallist: Zac Carroll (Doncaster)
Paul Semertzidis – EFL Media Team Doncaster by 31 points Nothing bigger than this Caster clash on Grand Final day! The Doncaster Football Club have not lost a game since round 1 whilst the Lions have found their best football in this finals series. It’s a real clash of the titans in the Limbach vs Thompson battle but I think the Sharks midfield just has the edge. Gordon Parker/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Zane Kadlecik (Doncaster)
Aaron Kirkby-Rodier – EFL Media Team Doncaster 44 Points Doncaster have been the standout team since a quarter of the way through the season and haven’t been beaten since round 1. Doncaster East have a big chance especially if Dean ‘Dogga’ Limbach can get off the leash although, The Sharks will be too good in the ‘Caster Clash’ Grand Final Gordon Parker/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Chris Annakis (Doncaster).

DIVISION 2 GRAND FINAL PREVIEW By Joshua Dawe It’s the Division 2 Grand Final match-up many hoped for but not many predicted. After a Croydon finals series capitulation, the suburb of Doncaster will be split 50/50 as Tormore Reserve sets to host one of the biggest Derby Grand Finals in recent years; Doncaster vs Doncaster East. For the Sharks, it’s a chance to cap off what has been a dominant season with their second promotion in three years. Since losing their first game of the year, they have passed through the season undefeated, scoring a grand final spot with a demolition job on Croydon two weeks ago, keeping the Blues to the second lowest finals score in EFL history with a 112 point victory. The Lions have had to do it the long way, beating Bayswater in a semi-final before knocking off Croydon in the preliminary final by 38 points after two unsuccessful attempts during the year. They’ve found form at the perfect time of the season to score their first Grand Final berth since 2007. While they will go in as underdogs, their ability last week to share 13 goals between six of their forwards will give Andrew Tranquilli some headaches this week. Team News: Both sides will go in at full strength, with the only likely change to be the return of Ben Johnson for the Sharks after a two game hiatus. Johnson’s replacement will most probably be Greg Jarvis considering the Lions only run with one recognised ruckman. However Jesse Liebelt or James Munks could also be possible departures, having swung between both seniors and reserves sides during the year. It’s unlikely and either would be stiff considering recent form. Either way, if Johnson is fit, expect an unfortunate change for one unlucky Shark. Past Meetings: The teams have met twice during the regular season, with Doncaster victorious on both occasions. In Round 2, they won by 38 points thanks to a 6 goal to none third term, with Chris Annakis and Nick Batsanis best on ground respectively. In Round 11, it was an even more convincing win to the Sharks by 64 points, with Thompson kicking 6 goals and Heath Scotland best on ground. For the Lions that day, five of their best six were from the backline, hinting the dominance Doncaster held in that game. Key Matchups: Ewen McKenzie vs Billy Morrison Possibly the two most mobile ruckmen in the competition, these two will test each other in the hit-out count as well as around the ground. Both in a rich vein of form, crucial battle. Jay Pearson/Ben Marganis vs Dean Limbach Marganis had the matchup on Brenden Weinart a few weeks ago and comprehensively beat him. Should get the first crack at Limbach, but expect a chop-out or a change during the game with Pearson. David Molloy vs Jack Sholakis and Michael Battista vs Jarryd Lowther Both Molloy and Lowther have played lock-down roles on Justin Ficcorili in the past weeks and get the respective important tasks on taking the oppositions dangerous small forwards. Sholakis and Battista might not be the first names they go to, but as two incredibly dangerous 14
targets for both teams down forward, expect to see these duels during the day. Player to Watch (Doncaster): Chris Annakis In a team filled with ex-AFL names such as Fiora, Johnson, Scotland and Thompson, it’s easy to forget at times about some of the other supreme Doncaster talent that rolls out onto the park every week. Annakis is the best example of that. The midfielder enjoyed a relatively bruise free semi-final against Croydon as Paul Newlands decided not to run anyone on him after a dominant first term. Will be interesting to see what tactic Steve Buckle decides to employ. Annakis has elite skills and his vision and pinpoint kicking sets up countless attacks up the ground. He can win the ball inside and outside the contest and is one of many goal threats sneaking up forward. If the Sharks do get the win, he will be one player that won’t have too much trouble slotting into Division 1 football. Player to Watch (Doncaster East): Dylan Agnew The 21 year old Lion has had a stellar season playing on the half forward line and its often his contribution that goes unrewarded. He is the middle man between the midfield and big Dean Limbach and his link up play and skills allow his key forward to have golden service in most games. His strength in his legs allows for an unreachable and tricky to defend vertical leap and when he hits the ground, he uses his speed and Dustin Martin like upper body strength to fend off his opponents. Throw in strong hands and a silky right boot, and you’ve got one of the best half-forwards in the competition and a tricky sized package for any team to deal with. He used to run around in blue and white hoops, so he’d love to show his old team what they’re missing on the big stage. Keys to Success (Doncaster): It doesn’t take much to work out why the Sharks are favourites today, nor why they have been so successful over their journey this year. They have one of the most potent and flexible forward setups in the competition and remarkably have had 7 players kick over 20 goals this season. The key to a Doncaster victory lies in their transition off half back. Scotland, Schimmelbusch, Siakavelis, Fiora and Carroll will all spend some time in that defensive 50, and if they can get the ball moving out of the Lions’ forward line with the ease and speed that they did against Croydon, the flag is theirs. Keys to Success (Doncaster East): The most impressive part of the Lions run of form over the last month has been their ability to keep the ball out of their opponents hands through a serious reduction in turnovers. As evident in their win against Croydon, the Lions have been able to control possession and break down oppositions defensive structures, running forward into space constantly. Their stoppage work has been superb of late too, with Whitling, Hickey and club B&F favourite Batsanis running the midfield like clockwork. Both tactics will be hard to master against the Sharks, but pivotal to their upset chances.

DIVISION 2 CLUB NOTES Doncaster: We’ve made it to the Grand Final after last year’s disappointing finish. It comes off a great season which has seen us lose only once in Rd 1 – but hopefully there is still one more win to go. Mixed results a fortnight ago in the Semi’s. The Reserves were bundled out in the First Semi to Waverly Blues in what was a mirror image of last year’s Grand Final, but we should learn that we can’t turn up for the last quarter against quality sides like the Blues and expect a good outcome. Besides some frustrating results at times another good year by Erwin & Sweat and have provided plenty of depth and headaches for the Senior coach – which means it’s been a successful year. Seniors entered the second semi against second placed Croydon and with not much separating the two during the year, a close encounter was anticipated. However, the Seniors put on the best performance of the year and though admittedly it was probably Croydon’s worst, we did what had to be done and ran out convincing winners. Best – Team effort. It all comes down to today as we take on Doncaster East for the Gregory/King Cup…….ohh and a premiership is also at stake !!! Good luck to the boys and if we do what we’ve done all year, things should look after themselves. Big thanks to all Committee, Sponsors (particularly major Sponsors – United, Eagle Hire & Selection Steel), Supporters, Friends & Family and to the players for the commitment shown through the season. Club Rooms open tonight – all welcome. Vote Count is tomorrow also in the club rooms, again we encourage all to attend. Presentation Night will be on Saturday 19th September at the Shoppingtown Hotel – See Sweat for Details. All the best to all over Summer and see you in 2016 and for the final time this year Al Smith – Stick to Doing What You Do Best - STICKTA !!!!! Doncaster East: After the final siren sounded at a tick over the 52 minute mark (Ambulance required for Croydon’s Nathan Haag – we’ve heard that he’s OK) at Boronia last Saturday it was all about backslapping, hugging, yelling and cheering; in the crowded change room, the Donny East song was belted out like there was no tomorrow! A look around the change room a few minutes later and a couple of people had their “moment” earlier than expected – the moment of realisation that we had made it into the Grand Final. This “moment” happens to people at different times, it probably won’t hit 1 or 2 of the younger players until they run out on the ground today. Winning is scary because Doncaster East FC has never been in Division one before and losing means we’ll have to endure the pressure of maintaining our ‘top of the tree’ status in Divvy 2. Whatever happens today, we’re just so proud of the way our boys have responded to the challenges THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER
in recent weeks. We held 4th spot by a mere 1.37% over Waverley Blues coming into the final H&A round, facing Bayswater who had beaten 2nd placed Croydon the week before. Croydon was (until last week) our Hoodoo club – we had lost every game against them since they came down to Div 2 in 2013! Come to think of it, our record against Doncaster hasn’t been too flattering in recent times . . . . . hmmmm . . . . . . Only a few tickets left for our ‘Finals Fever Dinner’ (Thursday September 17) Guest Speakers Mark ‘Bomber’ Thompson and David ‘OX’ Schwarz. Better call Pete Sowersby (0408 383 118) asap. Our Presentation night is Friday Sept 25 at Zerbes (Call Michael Gordon – 0411728800) . . . . Is there anything more fearsome than a Pride of 22 hungry Lions on the prowl? - Colonel Mooroolbark: Good luck to all teams playing in today’s 2nd Division Grand Finals. The Colts are flying the flag for the Mighty Mustangs today after a stellar home & away season. Under the guidance of coach Neil Wells and his assistant Scott Hassan, the boys went through undefeated to earn a spot in the 2nd Semi Final two weeks ago where they came up against Croydon. After leading comfortably for most of the game the Blues came back strongly in the final term to reduce the final margin to 11 points. Jordy Roth kicked 5 goals and Jon Egan got the nod as BOG. Congratulations to Sam Downie who topped the league goal kicking for Divvy 2 with 44 goals. Good luck to the boys today as they take on Mulgrave in the big one. I know Wellsy will have them fired up and ready for the biggest game of the season. All Mustang supporters are welcome to come back to the Heights clubrooms during the afternoon and evening to hopefully join the boys in celebrating a premiership. GO MUSTANGS !!! Mulgrave: Congratulations to our Under 19 side for winning their way into a second successive Grand Final. This feat was achieved with a very strong win against Croydon at Boronia last week. In a tight first half the game ebbed and flowed, with Mulgrave going into the break two points up. The third quarter was crucial, where we exerted our dominance, capitalised on a winning ruck, got more drive out of the middle with Griffin James moving into the midfield, and attacked off half back through dominant wings. At three quarter time we lead by thirty- one points. The final quarter was played in a similar fashion, where we extended our lead, but late goals by Croydon improved the score-line from their perspective, with several of our better players sitting out the last portion of the quarter to keep them fresh for this week. The 15
DIVISION 2 CLUB NOTES final score showed an 18 point win. Best players in a side where everyone contributed were Jordy Siriwardana who tackled fiercely and won plenty of ball, Josh Meyers made the most of his opportunities and used the ball well, Nick Henley dominated the ruck contests, Andy Tsai was tight and reliable down back, Dan Doria fought his way through the pain barrier and played a great game, and Jeremy Palmer provided great drive off half back. The ball is at our feet, Mooroolbark have gone through the season undefeated, this is a great opportunity to inflict their first defeat of the season, and win back to back premierships. After the game we will head back to the club to celebrate our year, we encourage all players, supporters and parents to join us. Upcoming events at the club include the $1000 draw on Friday September 25th, only $20 a ticket, then we have Presentation Night on Thursday 1st October at Mulgrave Country Club. The Annual General Meeting of the Mulgrave Football Club will be held on Friday 9th October, 7.30pm, at Mulgrave Sports Club. Wantirna South: Congratulations to the reserves on making their third consecutive Grand Final. A great effort from Morgs and everyone involved Presentation night is fast approaching and will be held on Saturday 26th September at the Whitehorse Club, tickets are
16
$90pp, contact Kathy Lang on 0422 694 340 to book your tickets. After todays match the clubroom will open from 3pm until late and everyone is welcome to come back to hopefully celebrate a Devil Premiership with the boys. Waverley Blues: Well done once again to Reserves coach Luke Taunt and his deputies, Richie Demajo and Ryan Tily for their hard work on getting our beloved Waverley Blues Twos to yet another Grand Final. The club has only been going in these colours for 17 years and this will be our 10th reserves Grand Final. This will be Luke’s seventh of those ten grand finals and he knows what it takes to win one. And he knows they’re not easy to win. Last week the side got the better of Croydon after being challenged early in the third quarter. A five goal burst put the game out of reach, although Croydon did push us right to the end. In the best players were Serpa, Egan, Martin and Ouzas. Win or lose we will have the Best & Fairest Vote Count back at the club rooms starting with the Under 19s at 7pm. There will be a barbecue and a Power Point presentation, so good times are assured. Thanks to all the helpers and well done to the Committee, led by Gavin Kaye and Troy Fairbairn, for all their hard work and continuing to steer the club in the right direction. Go Blues!

Bloods Over Eagles! By Joshua Dawe Warrandyte kick-started their day of premiership success last Saturday with a 22 point victory in the U19’s grand final over minor premiers Ferntree Gully. The Bloods, while only finishing one win behind the Eagles in the regular season, went into the game as underdogs having lost by 18 points to the Eagles in the 2nd semi-final two weeks prior. However after keeping Ferntree Gully scoreless in a wet first quarter, the Bloods ran away with it in a four goal to none last term, winning the first of three Warrandyte flags. Captain Sidney Philip-Owen claimed the Blue Ribbon Medal for best on ground with an inspired performance off half-back, while forwards Ben Richardson and Joshua Beasley starred with 3 goals apiece. For the Eagles, Sean Charles and Jake Siewart were impressive through the midfield, while Lachlan Kennedy and Dylan Eacott proved dangerous up forward, both booting 2 goals. It was a horror start for Ferntree Gully, unable to register a score as the sloppy conditions favoured Warrandyte’s lockdown style of play. Richardson made the most of his opportunities, kicking 2 early goals as the Bloods’ pressure mounted. Zac Ratcliffe was controlling on a wing, rebounding with confidence and pace, while Daniel Mifsud’s skills aided his side greatly, as he kicked the third of the quarter to gain a 22 point advantage over their opponents. The second quarter however was all Ferntree Gully and while the Eagles sprayed the scoreboard slightly, kicking 3.6, they won the quarter comfortable and cut the lead to just 5 points. Lachlan Sproules backed up a dominant first

quarter with another classy effort, while a clever move to throw ruckman Jordan Bass into the back half allowed utilities Yarran Curtis and Patrick Turner to enforce their presence around the ground with height. Astan Ure and Joshua Rowarth were huge for the Bloods down back, helping keep Warrandyte in the game with a number of intercept marks and rebound efforts. The sun came out over Walker Park in the third term as the Eagles took back the lead for the first time in the game. Eacott snagged 2 and Kennedy added another as Ferntree Gully took momentum and looked dangerous, but a freakish snap from the boundary via Josiah Bektash ensured the Bloods wouldn’t go away. Phillip-Owen lifted his game in the second half, racking up plenty of touches and even running back into a pack to take a courageous skippers mark. The final term was all red and white. Richardson was pivotal, kicking one and setting up Beasley for another, and when the centre-half forward slotted his second for the term, celebrating with the Warrandyte faithful, it was clear the game was won. Leading goal scorer Sean Bowers had his number well held by Rhett Dalton all day, but snared the final goal for the day with his first, and the siren soon sounded to confirm a fantastic team performance. It was all smiles for the Bloods despite a serious knee injury to Ratcliffe, but his hobbling and painful march up the podium to claim his premiership medallion highlighted the mindset of the premiers; determined, willing and brave.

A DAY OF RED AND WHITE The Giants of Division 4 2015 were always going to be hard to beat, it’s not often a side on top of Division 4 makes it to the big dance and doesn’t finish the job. The Bloods were able to do that last weekend, claiming the Division 4 Premiership with a 23 point win over Kilsyth. The major key to success for the Cougars was to steady the faster of the two sides and be able to nail the run of the Bloods through the middle of Walker Park, although when Warrandyte took an early lead and had two goals in the board in the first 10 minutes it was danger signs for the Cougars. Kilsyth hit back opening up the forward 50 for Jay Sherlock to allow the big man to kick their first followed by some lovely play from the Kilsyth mid’s that had them leading at the first change. The next two quarters were controlled by the Bloods who were able to use the run provided by Mark Cullen and Dan Toohey off half back to create options pressing forward. And when Warrandyte’s to key targets started to break the shackles the Bloods had extended the lead to beyond four goals. In the third term Warrandyte kicked six goals to two and were able to extend the lead past 40 points. The run and excitement of Chad Gauci and youngster Chris Tout allowed the Bloods to make the impossible, possible. The Bloods defenced not only absorbed anything that came their way but repelled to advantage, the efficiency of Cullen, Toohey and the Blue Ribbon Medallist Daley was second to none as they delivered to the likely types in Appleby and Gauci. Effectively there wasn’t a player on the ground in a Red and white jumper who had a bad day, and when
26
By Dyson Baker that happens it was always going to be tough for Kilsyth who pressed hard in the final term to no avail. The Cougars had the ball inside Forward 50 for majority of the final term but couldn’t land the telling blow which would put the Bloods on the back foot. The defensive pressure in the last was again to much to bare for Kilsyth as they tried to get back into the contest. To their credit, they were able to slot four goals to one in the final term and reduce the margin back to 23 points with a Rigley goal on the stroke of full time, somewhat of a far margin to the way the game was played, the bloods kept those at arm’s reach most of the afternoon. Early in the final term, when the Cougars had dominated possession and scored their first for the term there was a feeling around the ground that potentially if they were able to reduce it back to under 20 points that Warrandyte would feel the pressure and crumble. To the bloods credit, as good as they forwards and midfielders had been through the first three quarters it was the Warrandyte defence who were able to hold out and ensure victory when Kilsyth looked likely. The culmination of a day that will go down in Warrandyte history for years to come with all three sides recording victories, a far cry from their 2014 finals campaign, and that’s the way they like it! The Bloods will now be the most equip side to take the jump from Division 4 to 3 next season, limiting their stay in Division 4 to just two years, following their 2013 relegation.

NETBALL REVIEW By Will Taylor Chirnside Park in a close one!
Lions dominant to the end!
With The Basin Red and Mooroolbark been crowned premiers in Divisions 3 and 4, Knox Regional Netball Centre was the centre stage for the finale of the NetballEFL second season.
Fittingly in the top Division it was the top two sides battling for Premiership glory, Eastern Lions and Croydon with the Blues playing their second consecutive Grand Final.
Mitcham Yellow and Chirnside Park was the first game on centre court as the Division Two season was set for a great finish.
The Lions jumped out of the blocks with the Krista Tomlinson and Maree Gold turning the momentum their way as Lions took a 12-5 lead at the first change. At the long break with Lions leading 26-14, Croydon needed help and they certainly got it from Steph Gibbs and Alicia Hughes in the goal circle while Carla Bourne and Claire Garrick in the goal defence roles as well as mid-court trio combinations of Steph McLachlan, Gretel Schroder and Katie Wilson to reduce the gap to 37-26 lead at the last change.
Mitcham Yellow started the game all guns blazing with a great defensive plays by Nikki Whitten and Kylie Devlin but the game was about to change as Chirnside Park turned the tables in the middle part of the first term to cut the margin back to 2 goals at the first break. With the scores tied at 11, Chirnside Park had all the answers with Kylie Tuppenny and Jenny Dewhurst played their great defence while Alexander Dunford and Tracy Cornish took all the scoring for the Chirnside team. Of course, not to be forgotten the mid-court trio of Anna Grigg, Sarah Rosendale and the Blue Ribbon Medallist Michelle Duke to guide Chirnside Park to a 27-21 win Grand Final win over Mitcham Yellow to claim Division Two Premiership.
The last quarter was all Eastern Lions as Blue Ribbon Medallist Jordan Lingard and the defence duo of Marian Varney and Allana Osborne kept the Blues out of the game and extending a 16-6 last quarter to win their first NetballEFL Premiership with a 53-32 win.

UMPIRES CORNER By Darren Goldspink, EFL Head of Umpiring Like, players, clubs and officials, umpires strive to be a part of Grand Final Day. They all work hard during the year, honing their skills with knowledge obtained through attendance at Coaching Sessions and experiences on match day, together with a solid base of fitness gained through numerous hours on the track throughout the year to provide themselves with the best opportunity to be one of 36 Senior umpires to be selected over the next fortnight. With 36 Grand Final Appointments available, that means 80 odd umpires miss out. Based on this statistic alone, you can understand that some of these decisions are extremely difficult. Obviously form and ability is a high priority. Like players, some umpires rise to the big occasion which sets them apart from their colleagues and is a determining factor in their appointment. Some of our younger umpires struggle towards the end of a long season. It is a balancing act to get “them up” for the last 2 weekends of the year and umpiring the manner in which they were earlier in the year. On many occasions, it is difficult to separate umpires between Division’s. On these occasions, attendance at training and coaching sessions, availability during the year and attitude and dedication to the task is taken into account in determining appointments. Performances of umpires throughout the year are also taken into account as most umpires are observed on a regular basis throughout the home and away season. Many reasons are taken into account to arrive at our final selections. Suffice to say, when appointments are announced on Thursday night, there will be umpires who are elated, however there will be more who are
disappointed. Some will be disappointed with the game they received, the others will be disappointed with missing out altogether. We promote the fact that you should be disappointed with missing out. In our minds, it demonstrates umpires genuinely care about what they do and want to be the best they can. We also encourage them to use that disappointment to motivate them for next year in their quest to achieve their ultimate goal of umpiring an EFL Grand Final.

EASTERN RANGES The Eastern Ranges are through to the TAC Cup Semi-finals, with a convincing win over the Calder Cannons last week in their Elimination Final matchup.
EASTERN RANGES: 6.3 11.5 16.7 CALDER CANNONS: 2.5 5.8 5.9
The Ranges held the ascendancy throughout the game, taking their foot off the pedal in the final quarter which resulted in the Cannons clawing back some margin.
GOALS Eastern: R. Clarke 4, B. Hardwick 3, J. Stephenson 2, J. Collins 2, J. Garner 2, B. Mitchener, T. Jacotine, L. Jeffs, A. Cotte Calder: K. Brown 4, Z. Wunhym 2, J. James, H. Kerbatieh, C. Moore, J. Flower, D. Tarczon
In good football conditions at IKON Park in Carlton, the Ranges got off to a quick start and never truly looked worried. By three-quarter time, the side had amassed an insurmountable 11-goal lead. Ryan Clarke’s usual midfield output was slightly reduced as the midfielder pushed forward to kick 4 goals. Regular forward, Blake Hardwick, also contributed 3 as the side had 9 individual goalkickers. Bryce Batty appeared to be everywhere, racking up 28 disposals, 8 clearances and 8 inside 50s, while skipper Liam Jeffs played his best game of the year. The Cannons made the best of their fourth-quarter efforts to gallantly reduce the final margin to 34 points. However it was the Ranges day, with the side now moving on to a semi-final.

DIVISION 3 CLUB NOTES Mitcham: Well it’s been 23 years in the making since A Mitcham Football Club First XVIII Has been in a position to play in a grand final and 34 years since we have tasted the ultimate success - The Good news is we have ticked the first box and our destiny is now in our own hands should we wish to tick the second. Unfortunately the under 19s came up short against Upper Gully out at Glen Waverley on Sunday. The boys put in a spirited effort and led at half time and while the score board blew out a little late, the fact the boys were able to remain competitive for the majority off the game after Upper had blown us away both times during the season shows the develop of the boys though out the year. The reserves haven’t missed a beat in the second half of the season and Saturday was NO different as they cruised into their 3rd consecutive grand final. Parkes up forward booted 5 with Arrowsmith and Mckeown doing the damage around the ground. In The seniors the question had been asked by somehow the Tigers were travelling and after booting the first 4 goals of the game there was no doubt about the answer. CO Captains Petracca and Witnish stood tall with good support from Glossop, Bell, Higginson and Warne in his 150th.Even though the coach spent the second half on the bench, The Tigers midfield depth was on show for all to see. With both teams now right to now enjoy the weeks break, both will have full lists to choose from and hopefully end a 34 Senior Premiership year drought BIG THANK YOU to the Mitcham Faithful, parents, friends, junior parents and players that stayed behind at Walker Park to run the Division 4 finals on a bitterly cold and wet day as our seniors and reserves did battle out at East Burwood. While the crowd wasn’t great The Mitcham Footy Club again show cased that we can host the Big games come rain, hail or shine regardless of the obstacles put in front of us. Keep checking out the website for further updates regarding the Grand Final, Presentation Night and the Major raffle #neverbeenabettertimetobeatoger
our Reserves and U19’s for making it into the 2015 EFL Division 3 Grand Finals. We are really pleased with the efforts of our whole club this year in transitioning from 4th division to 3rd. It has been a jump in quality opposition and we have worked hard to develop and compete at this level in each challenge. Congratulations to Andrew Molloy and his assistants Mark Hamilton and Gavin Turner for the work they have put in this year to position their team for back to back Premierships in the reserves competition. It will be a huge challenge against a very strong and inform Mitcham whom we will go in underdogs and have to pull off the game of our lives to grab the cup. We would also like to congratulate Tony Weeks, who is no stranger to the big dance, as well as his assistants Andrew Cromb, Darren Witnish and Brett Pascoe for leading our u19’s to top of table and now the GF. Boronia have been a strong team all year and will prove to be a great battle. Good luck and best wishes to all our players this Sunday for a successful end to all the hard work.. The whole club is proud of you and right behind you all. Go Sharks!
Park Orchards: The Park Orchards Football Club would like to send our best wishes to all the fathers associated with our community and thank them for their support throughout the 2015 season. Fathers play a crucial role in the lives of our players and around our club in so many ways. We are grateful for our many volunteers that serve tirelessly around the club and for the fathers, we hope that the u19’s and Reserves wins on Sunday was a nice Fathers Day present for you too. Happy Fathers Day to all our fathers. Congratulations to 38

MEDIA TIPS DIVISION 3 Dyson Baker – EFL Media Manager Tigers by 30 points As if the Division 3 finals series couldn’t get any better, The Basin come out and surprise everyone turning around a 60 point drubbing in the Qualifying Final! From here the ultimate success is the only objective and The Basin will have their eyes firmly planted on the Premiership Cup, one wonders however if the gritty tough football will play into the hands of a Tigers side that is good… and knows it. The Bears will need to look down early, if not it could get ugly! Les Leete/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Josh Bell (Mitcham)
V
Lachlan Munro – EFL Media Team Mitcham by 19 points The Basin had a good start to the year, but in the past 2 months have struggled with their form and have been inconsistent. They were lucky to get past an inaccurate Templestowe side last week. Mitcham have been a commanding force over the year and this finals series has been no exception, they are the most deserving side to go into division 2. I expect The Basin to be competitive and give everything that they have got, but the Tigers will be too good for them on the day. Les Leete/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Jarrod Witnish (Mitcham) Paul Semertzidis – EFL Media Team The Basin to lead at Half time- Mitcham to win by 28 points It is far too hard to go past Mitcham. They have enjoyed an arm chair ride in to the Grand Final and will be fresh and ready to go. The Basin have toughed it out over this finals series and I think will run out of legs. A division 2 berth awaits for the Tigers. Les Leete/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Robbie Petracca (Mitcham) Will Taylor – EFL Media Team Mitcham by 4-5 goals East Burwood Reserve may see either a close or a one side matchup between Mitcham and The Basin. The Basin finally got back to form and showed the rest of the critics that they are one of the best teams in the competition by despatching Templestowe and Ringwood in the last two finals matches but 40
the team they will be facing will be a much tougher opponent who will have the full power and arsenal ready to finally win their first Division 3 premiership ever and breaking their 34 year drought (1981 Division 1). Les Leete/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Chris Hoegel (Mitcham)
Brad Henderson – EFL Media Team Mitcham by 68 points Mitcham have been a genuine contender in third division for three seasons and now is their time to move back into Division 2. It’s been a mighty effort by The Basin to get this far, and really it’s hard to fault the season they have put together, finishing third on the ladder and winning two cutthroat finals to reach this day. The Tigers though will have far too much class for the Bears, and the depth which runs through their team down to their 21st and 22nd man will stand them in good stead, with everyone playing their role. For The Basin, everything would need to fall into place perfectly, and also for Mitcham to have one of their occasional off-days. I don’t see that happening. After a bit of a scare early, I expect the Tigers to run away with the match in the second term, and finish off with a convincing win. Les Leete/Blue Ribbon Medallist: Jayden Hoegel (Mitcham) Aaron Kirkby-Rodier – EFL Media Team Mitcham 26 Points Mitcham have shown their class all throughout the season and you feel it’s their time, The basin have arguably had their best two wins in the last two weeks and will be full of confidence. It’s the Tigers time unfortunately for the Bears. Les Leete/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Chris Hoegel (Mitcham) Andy Paolacci - EFL media Team Mitcham by 55 points Looking at this clash, it’s hard to go past Mitcham being the ultimate victors come 5:00pm this Sunday afternoon. The toughened Tigers have learned some harsh lessons from last season and look a more composed outfit in 2015. Their firepower of the Hoegel brothers and Steve Pimm, coupled with the continued midfield drive, should be too much for The Basin to handle. Les Leete/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Jarrod Witnish (Mitcham). www.efl.org.au
Division 3 Grand Final Preview by Dyson Baker There is no mistaking the Tigers are on the March. Since their Preliminary Final loss last year they have set themselves for this day and haven’t taken a backwards step in getting to The Grand Final. It will take a monumental effort for The Basin to overcome the 12 goal defeat they suffered at the hands of Mitcham half way through the season, although after overcoming their Qualifying Final defeat in last week’s Preliminary Final they will be nothing short of inspired. Much like last week’s Division 4 Grand Final, there is an expectation that Mitcham should get the job done and do it in somewhat convincing fashion, being the best side all year with one of the most well rounded and versatile teams Division 3 has seen in years they tick all the boxes. However, what could be seen on the outside as a confidence boost and a momentum shift going the way of the Tigers could also be seen as their greatest weakness. Mitcham will have expected to be here, from 12 months ago given the talent they added to an already professional group, however the difference in today’s game is whether or not the Tigers WANT to win or EXPECT to win. For mine, The Basin will want to win, the Bears have nothing to lose and have exceeded well beyond the expectations of most this season making it to Todays Grand Final. If they can catch this Tigers side napping and put them on the back foot early it does make it interesting! Mitcham this season has managed 5 or more
THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER
goals in the first term eight times for the year, the significance of this is The Basin have been one of the worst starting teams in the competition, however have managed to pull of some big wins with huge final quarters. With all this said, if The Basin to keep themselves within reach at each break they go a long way to winning the game, on the flip side of this if one of the Tiger Trio (Pimm, Hoegel, Hoegel) get off the leash early and Mitcham are able to take a commanding lead inside the first 20-25 minutes it could be a long day for the Bears faithful. Mitcham’s dominance early will be through its strong bodied midfield who should be able to shut down any real dominance in the middle The Basin may think they have. Expect nothing short of a bruataly physical contest consumed by contest after contest with both sides pushing the limits of ‘contested posseesion. For mine, The fight back will come early in the third as The Basin try to get back into the contest and they will control most of the second half, however, by this point in the game Mitcham should have skipped out to a big enough lead to hold off any real attack. Mitcham by 28 points Best on Ground – Josh Bell – Mitcham Will be the general most of the day across half back and will act to repel everything that comes inside defensive 50 – expect clean disposal and a fair bit of footy smarts in every possession.

DIVISION 1 CLUB NOTES Balwyn: It’s all or nothing today as we take on Vermont FC, the winner securing the coveted prize of a Grand Final berth. We wish all of the players and coaches the very best today. All the fans in the stands are right behind you all the way – Go Tigers! Congratulations to our Reserves team who won their semi final, going straight to the Grand Final, ensuring their ticket to the “Big Dance” on Saturday 19 September. Well done and we look forward to cheering you on. We will be having our Grand Final Eve luncheon on Friday 18th September at the clubs social rooms so include that in your diaries -always a great day in the calendar of the club. Don’t miss out – make your bookings now with Football Manager, Jo Tregear – 0412 172 183. More details to come on Guest Speakers etc., via our website and social media. We regularly update on Facebook, Twitter @balwynfc and Instagram. Like or follow us to keep up to date with all the latest Balwyn FC news and information. BEST & FAIREST PRESENTATION NIGHT: Our next big social night to finalise the year, will be the B & F, which will again be held in the River Room at Crown Melbourne on Saturday 26 September (week after EFL Grand Final, and a week before AFL Grand Final). Get this date into your diary and don’t miss what will be another sensational night. $150 all inclusive. Bookings with Jo on number above. POLO SHIRTS our new design Puma Polo Shirts now available for sale $50 – See us at the club on Thursday nights or contact Jo on the number above. Blackburn: There were missed opportunities for our Reserves in the Qualifying Final vs Balwyn. Playing good football in patches, isn’t what is needed against a good team with experienced players. Having fought back from a 17pt H/T deficit to be equal at 3/4T. The last Qtr was a rollercoaster with both teams gaining leads only to see the opposition kick ahead. Despite some good conversion up forward and a couple of Joey Zema screamers, the Burners went down by a couple of goals. Best players on the day were Zema, Hobbo, Mitch Dawson, Jim “Showers” Carroll and Mitch Thorp. A Preliminary Final vs Vermont awaits next week and it will be a big week on the track to do what is needed on the day to get through to a Grand Final. Whilst our young squad of U19’s didn’t finish the Finals series the way they had hoped, going down to Norwood by 36pts in the 1st Semi, the lads can be incredibly pleased with their achievements. With a new coach and many new players, the team had a most successful home an away campaign and were the form team for most of the year. There is some real talent coming through which was on show again in the best players for the game Kyle Hawley, Jhi Aitkin, Joel Merrett, Josh Myers, Jacob Epple THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER
and Luke Clark were all solid performers on the day. The Club congratulates Coach – Mat Eccles, Captain Craig Bentley and VC Jhi Aitkin, players and parents for your efforts in 2015. We are in for some excitement in the years to come with such a talented and committed group – Go Burners. The Club congratulates our Junior League Best & Fairest winners announced during the week:- Brooke Vickers U12 Girls, Taylah Morton U15 Girls & Jack Kritopolous U15A – A great achievement from all three players. Upcoming Events: Presentation Night – Thursday 24th September, 7.30pm, Grand Final Eve Lunch – Fri 2nd October, 12 noon with Guest Speaker Rex Hunt, followed by our world famous Duck Drop competition. Norwood: The Norwood Football Club is one step away from BTB Premiership glory after accounting for Balwyn by just 3 points in a pulsating, grinding, unbearably tension filled 2nd Semi Final at Bayswater Oval on Saturday. The win had supporters chewing their nails, sitting on the edge of their seats, tearing the hair out and every other quip you can come up with as the final siren could not come quick enough with Balwyn charging home late to try to snatch the win away. But sound it did, to send us into the Grand Final and importantly, a vital week’s break, while Balwyn will face a dangerous Vermont in a repeat of last years preliminary final. The first quarter was very even, 2 goals apiece, as both sides sought the advantage. It was tough too, with several big clashes The 2nd quarter saw us eke out a small lead with two goals to just one, but we missed a couple of gettable shots late in the quarter that could have seen the lead a little more than just 5 points. With Balwyn down to just 1 rotation, we appeared to get on top late in the 3rd quarter, opening the lead up to 15 points in a low-scoring game, but again, a couple of misses left us wondering what might have been. The last quarter was epic, as Balwyn threw caution to the wind in their quest to win the game. We managed just one goal, a ripper to Dave Johnson, his 3rd in a BOG display, while Balwyn banged through two late goals to reduce the margin to 3 points. Happily, the bell rang with just 25minutes gone before further score. Everyone in Norwood colours was drained, everyone mightily relieved. The song was sung loud and strong. Next stop is the biggest EFL dance of all on September 19. Good luck today to our U19’s who are also looking for a chance to play in the “big one” on Sept 19. DIVISION 1 CLUB NOTES Vermont: To be here on Preliminary Final day with the Seniors and Reserves is a great privilege and also a credit to our players & coaches who have worked so hard over the past two weeks at Ringwood, The ground was in a sensational condition as was the assistance of the Ringwood Football Club. The Presentation & Vote Count Dinners are on 1st October for the Under 19’s and 2nd October for the seniors. If you have Mighty Eagle Raffle Tickets etc. Please buy them!! YOUTH THE KEY FOR EAGLES By Nick Brown A lot can change in just 12 months. Especially in football, you only need to ask Vermont’s Jaydon Stiles. This time last year, the 21-year-old didn’t even know the Vermont Eagles existed, now he is a key to their premiership chances. Though Vermont isn’t the only beneficiary, with Stiles revealing how the club has him enjoying football and life in general. “I didn’t know anything about the EFL, let alone Vermont,” Stiles admitted “But as soon as I got to Vermont I knew straight away it was for me. “The boys were so welcoming and we have such a young team so I fitted in straight away, which helped with fitting into Melbourne also. “So this season has been pretty good in terms of enjoyment. “And being in the one spot has allowed me to focus on my game and life outside of footy, after moving around a bit with work the last few years.” His on-field performances support his claims. As since relocating to Melbourne from the coastal town of Portland in Western Victoria, Stiles has produced some of the best football of his young career. As it is clear that stability and feeling at home at his new club have Stiles producing some of his best football of his career. The right footer booted 26 goals during the home and away season, playing as a forward and also spending time in the midfield. Yet there is still room for improvement in his game,

which the former Sturt forward hopes to have sorted for the final series. “I think the start to my season was pretty good,” Stiles said, “I dropped off a bit throughout the season, I’d have a really good quarter then go missing. “So consistency is something I want to work on. “I guess I just need to keep working on when I don’t have the ball and keep my work rate high.” Vermont’s premiership campaign which Stiles is so important to, continues on Saturday in the Eagles’ Preliminary Final clash with Balwyn. The two sides have met twice in season 2015 and there is certainly no love lost. Though the former Sturt forward is confident he and his new club can has what it takes to remain in the hunt for premiership glory and enter its first Grand Final since 2012, somewhat of a drought for the proud club. “This (finals) is what you play footy for,” Stiles exclaimed “Given I haven’t played finals since a grand final in 2012, I am really excited to play well. “And to go deep into the finals playing at a standard I know I’m capable of playing “I know what I am capable of, so I put pressure on myself to stand up. “As a team I think we are capable of anything. Everyone knows their role and we pride ourselves on playing team first football which has us where we are now. “We are in good form, we know what standard we need to play at and we have a full list going into finals which is great.”
