Welcome from the Chairman

As we reflect on the present, sometimes it is worth considering where we have come from. In 2005, the league had 372 football teams playing Graham Halbish up to 184 games per week. EFL Chairman By 2015 this has climbed to 465 football teams, a 25% increase in football team numbers, plus 36 netball teams and significantly increased game development activities. All managed by the same number of staff at the EFL Office that we had there 10 years ago. Evolution, growth and development are critical to any organization and a number of initiatives have been implemented, or are in the pipeline for the next two years, helping build on the solid work of our predecessors at league and club level. The year started with our senior representative team being successful in the Victorian Metro Championships against the Western Region and sees us return to the 1 v 2 game vs the VAFA next year. This strong result continued into our junior representative program with our under 14 and 15 EFL representative teams achieving their best results ever over the last three years, making ten out of a possible twelve grand finals in the AFL Victoria Junior Metropolitan Championships, winning eight. This year it was the under 14-2 and under 15-1 who saluted with the under 15-2 going down narrowly in their Grand Final. We’re proud that the EFL junior representative program remains the only program in metropolitan Melbourne fully funded by the league, with no cost to players, their families or clubs.

Junior numbers continue to be strong and in welcoming South Belgrave juniors to the EFL family, we congratulate them on a premiership and best and fairest winner in year one. However, with changing demographics and no significant growth areas in the East, the EFL is working hard in conjunction with AFL Victoria to ensure we engage new and greater numbers of participants in our great game into the future. Our netball competition has been a huge success, and in just two years has grown from 12 teams to 36 teams across four divisions. The feedback from clubs and those involved, including the netball community, continues to be very positive. Further growth is expected next year. Girls footy has also been a growth area across the industry for a number of years and while it has taken time to gain traction in the east, we were pleased to partner with the Dandenong Ranges JFL this year, to manage an under 12 and under 16 competition and the numbers look to grow significantly in 2016. As you will have read and seen female participation is a key focus for the AFL and this filters through to community football. The combination of these two initiatives will ensure our clubs continue to become diverse and integrated parts of their local communities, catering for all. The league continues to partner with sponsors and other groups to help deliver important educational messages on issues confronting our local communities. The Eastlink driver education program helped another 150 under 17 players’ gain 2.5 hours of expert, practical driver training tuition. We partnered with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation to help promote the Gambling’s Not a Game program, an issue we know is real in our clubs. We conducted our first ever Respect Round, working with Eastern Health, Inspiro and Victoria Police to deliver key messages around the prevalence of family violence. And our association with beyond blue and Sports Chaplains Australia remains constant, along with drug and alcohol education programs being delivered in clubs through Sport & Life Training.

On behalf of the EFL Board I’d like to welcome you to the EFL Division 1 Grand Final Day. Today is the culmination of a year’s efforts on and off the field and I’m sure we will see three great games.

Welcome from the Chairman from page 1

Looking to the future, much of the discussion this year has centered on AFL Victoria’s Community Club Sustainability Program, of which EFL CEO Phil Murton has been a key member of the working party. With a consensus across the state, the Board believes the time is right to embrace initiatives to further enhance local football competitions, including the EFL. 2016 will see the introduction of a player points system, with significant work having been done to ensure the system introduced is fair and has merit. We believe that encouraging junior development and rewarding player loyalty can only benefit our clubs and the league, and importantly, will give the lifeblood of local footy, the many hard-working volunteers, a sense of hope and greater fairness. Plans are underway for the introduction of a salary cap in 2017 to complement this and feedback from clubs, even our better resourced ones, has been positive in regard to its introduction. Importantly, this will be combined with club and player education tools to ensure the entire industry understands what it takes to run a footy club and ensure long term sustainability. Again this year we have seen significant investment in facilities across the league, thanks to local councils and government support. Work is underway, or will start shortly, on significant upgrades at Norwood and South Belgrave. While plans for an Eastern Football Hub with Hawthorn, AFL Victoria and the Eastern Ranges are on hold, we continue to advocate at all levels of government, the need for a centrally based, elite community football facility to help grow and develop the game in the East. We need to ensure the elite talent at junior level in the east of Melbourne are exposed to first rate facilities, training and coaching to ensure Australian Rules continues to be their sport of choice. We thank Knox Council and Bayswater FC for helping us host today’s game, one the biggest events held annually in the eastern suburbs on Melbourne, and one which requires a significant amount of planning and effort to present.

On the field, the finals so far have seen some wonderful stories. Warrandyte’s effort in winning all three grades, Mitcham breaking their 33 year premiership drought in emphatic fashion with wins in both the seniors and reserves, an under 19 division three Grand Final that needed extra time to split Park Orchards and Boronia, Mooroolbark under 19s completing the perfect season, and Doncaster capping off a wonderful year with a great win on Saturday and star on-baller Chris Annakis winning the Division Two league best and fairest. On Monday night we again celebrated the elite of our competition. Knox’s Luke Williams and Upper Ferntree Gully’s Tim Riseley were both hugely deserving winners of their Division best and fairest player award. Both are players who play the game in the exact spirit of which these awards were developed and have shown tremendous loyalty to their respective clubs over a long period of time. For those who attended any Division Four finals, the dominance of Kilsyth’s Jay Sherlock was clear to see and he too was a well deserving winner having been a dominant player in our competition across a number of divisions for many years. Another chapter in EFL history will be written today. Thank you all again for your attendance and ongoing support of the league and we look forward to a great contest today. May the best team win.

The league would particularly like to thank all of our loyal sponsors for their support again in 2015. We have long standing relationships with Channel Nine, BJS Insurance, Yarra Valley Water, Bendigo Bank-Canterbury, Surrey Hills and Balwyn, Ferntree Gully Motor Group, SEN1116, Trojan Tools and Lion Co, along with a range of other valued partners listed at the back of the record. Their investment in our competition allows us to deliver and fund much of the work outlined above and is very much appreciated by the league and clubs. 2

BOUNDARY BANTER BWS: Last day of the season mate, I can’t believe how fast this year has gone. RB: You’re not wrong mate, it wasn’t long ago we were putting in our season predictions and firing up for a big year. Ray Baird

BWS: 2015 would have to rank right up there with one of the best we have seen. So many highlights and good stories to come out of the season, which had me thinking which the main ones to stand out were?

RB: Surely Warrandyte has to be right up there BWS. Three senior Premierships in the kitty has happened few and far between over the history of the league, and the Bloods showed pure class the whole way.

THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER

BWS: Such a fantastic club Warrandyte. A great committee, a strong committed playing group, new facilities and a passionate supporter base has the club in a wonderful position to rise through the higher divisions over the Ben Warren-Smith coming years. Broadcast Manager RB: You have a soft spot for any club that wears red jackets don’t you? BWS: Hahaha yeah I guess so mate. It always looks amazing during finals to see the club colours out in force, and it was an awesome sight at Walker Park on grand final day. RB: Mitcham ending the EFL’s longest Premiership drought of 34 years was something special. BWS: What a story. The Tigers had been building towards this for a number of years and no one was going to stop them in the last quarter on Saturday. Just to see the emotion on the players and supporters faces at the final siren was enough to bring everyone to tears. RB: Shed a few then did we? BWS: Almost Raymond, it was very excited. RB: I’d be surprised if you had any tears left after Donny East went down the day before. BWS: Funny guy! Speaking of Doncaster East, they were certainly one of my highlights for the year. It had been 8 long years since a finals birth down at Zerbes, and in what was probably the closest of all divisions, to make the grand final was a huge step forward. In saying that, Doncaster were sensational all year and thoroughly deserve their promotion to division 1. Andrew Tranquilli has done a superb job lifting this side up two grades in 3 years and they will hold their own against the big boys. RB: Just like the Rowville football club have since their promotion. The Hawks played great footy right through season 2015 and took some big scalps along the way. Their finals campaign was cut short, however the experience and confidence they have gained over the past few years has them in great stead for future seasons. BWS: I heard Chandler Medal night on Monday was once again a huge success? RB: It always is BWS. A chance for all clubs to come together and acknowledge the brilliant individual performances that make our league the best in the land. 5

BOUNDARY BANTER RB: I’ve thought long and hard about this game BWS as you can mount a strong case for both clubs. Balwyn have been the side to beat for the majority of the season, while Norwood in the second half of the year have played exhilarating football. Two weeks ago the Norseman pipped the Tigers by 3 points, however on that day Balwyn had a depleted bench which I believe cost them the victory. It’s sure to go down to the wire but I have Balwyn to win by 10 points.

BWS: Any major surprises? RB: No not really. There were a few people who were surprised with Luke Williams taking out the Chandler, however our man Wayne Brasher has been pumping him up for the last two months so I certainly had him right up there. BWS: Speaking of Brash, he too is one of my main highlights for the season. After missing all of last season with a life threatening illness, he recovered, dropped 40 odd kilos and dominated all media platforms this year taking out the Clinton Grybas media award – what a star! RB: The ultimate team player is our Brash and he is widely respected in local sport, not only in footy but cricket as well. BWS: Well there is only one great game as you #LOVEITLOCAL this afternoon, and it’s the big one – the Division 1 Grand Final and everyone is excited. RB: One of the best days of the year mate where the huge crowd comes rolling into Bayswater Oval to watch the best of the best go at it. As always the game will be broadcasted on 98.1FM and streamed around the globe at efl.org.au. BWS: It’s the replay of the 2014 Grand Final with Norwood taking on Balwyn. Last year’s result was one sided but I can’t see that happening today. Will Norwood go back to back or can Balwyn return to the mantle of being the league’s best team? 6

BWS: It’s a mouth-watering clash there is no doubt about that Raymond. Both sides have a plethora of gun players who love playing in the big games and delivering. Last week I had tipped Norwood to go back to back, but that was more swayed towards hoping my preseason tip would be correct… Having had a rethink my gut is now telling me that you liked the Tigers all year so why jump off now? So I’m backing Balwyn to get up in one of the classics by 6 points. RB: So we finish the year off with agreeing then mate – I’m a little disappointed! BWS: There’s been bets of 6 packs, slabs and bragging rights all year old man so I think it’s a good thing we finish on the same page. It has been fun chewing the fat about the league with you mate each week and I look forward to doing it all again next year! RB: Me too mate. The whole media team have put in a great year and let’s hope we come back bigger and better in 2016. BWS: Good luck for the cricket season mate in the geriatric comp, and don’t go braking a hip on me either! RB: Once a smart alec always a smart alec BWS! BWS: I couldn’t help myself See you at the footy mate! www.efl.org.au

ALL TROPHIES GOALKICKERS Norwood’s Leigh Williams has scored his way to the Division 1 All Trophies Leading Goal-kicker with a total of 79 goals kicked in season 2015. Two bags of 7 goals in Rounds 8 and 10, against South Croydon and East Ringwood respectively, helped bring up his healthy total for the season. He also managed 6 goals in both meetings with Knox, and another 6 goal bag against Blackburn in Round 12; giving him a season average of 4.4 goals per game. Congratulations on a great effort this season.

With an outstanding “container load” of goals this year, Dean Limbach has kicked 92 goals this season for the Doncaster East Football Club, also notching up the most goals kicked by a player in Season 2015, solely in the Seniors for all Four Divisions, averaging

10

5.1 goals per game. Booting a Dozen against Bayswater in Round 6, and a further 10 against Scoresby in the round previous, helped boost his total. With several games scoring 6 goals or higher, it’s quite evident that he has had a great year. Well done, and Congratulations. In Division 3, Leigh Odermatt of South Belgrave has topped the Goal-kicker charts by kicking a great total of 63 goals for the season. Kicking his season highest total of 8 goals in their teams second encounter with Silvan in Round 13, He also has managed another 3 games in which he’s scored 5 or more goals, adding to his season total. Averaging 3.5 goals per game, He has shown that his consistent goal scoring over each round has helped his goals accumulate for the Division 3 Highest goal-kicker. Congratulations on Season 2015. Warrandyte’s Ashley Froud overtakes last year’s Division 4 Goalkicker, teammate Luke Dunn, to take out this year’s title. Averaging 4.3 goals per game this season, he has managed to kick 7 bags of 5 goals or more in the 18 rounds of the year. Highlights of 8 goals against Glen Waverley Hawks in Round 1, and 7 goals against Surrey Park and Ferntree Gully in Rounds 9 and 11, respectively, have assisted in accumulating his impressive total for the season. Also kicking a separate 6 goals in the Division 4 Grand Final, it caps off a wonderful year for Froud. Congratulations again.

STATS BENCH Once again on the biggest day of the year Balwyn and Norwood will clash for supremacy! Just like last year Norwood have taken the easy route avoiding Vermont on the way Noel McPhee into the Grand Final this @statsbench week. The Norsemen, following last year’s Premiership are looking for back to back flags for the first time in the clubs history having saluted for the first time in Division 1 last year. A club used to success Balwyn, with their top of the table finish claimed their third minor Premiership and continued their run of 20 years in consecutive finals series (SFL 1996-06). The Tigers will be looking to once again hold aloft the cup – if they can do so it will be the third time in four years having claimed back to back flags in 2012/13.

12

Recent history in Division 1 Grand Finals doesn’t favour either side, with sides from 1st-4th claiming premierships over the past decade, however more often than not the side finishing on top has the ability to claim the premiership (As these two sides would be aware – Balwyn 2013, Norwood 2014).

MEDIA TIPS Dyson Baker – EFL Media Manager Balwyn – 9 points No bigger game! No bigger venue and tow of the best teams of the last 3-4 years are here once again. For mine the form over the back half of the season from Norwood has been solid, after what was a shaky start to their campaign for back to back flags. My feeling is Balwyn have made up the deficit in skill and experience from last year’s Grand Final and will be able to control the game early. I expect this to be the closest in a number of years with a couple of recent blowouts. Balwyn to lead by 20 at the first change, convincing fast starters then a game of fast paced high skilled football where Norwood will work back into the contest. First Goal: Brendan Goss (Balwyn) Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Jeff Gobbels (Balwyn)

Expect this one to go down to the wire, Norwood by 1 point. First Goal: Brendan Goss (Balwyn) Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Rennie Gilchrist (Balwyn)

V

Will Taylor – EFL Media Team Norwood The biggest day of the EFL calendar will be held at Bayswater Oval and Norwood will be primed to win back to back premiership while Balwyn will be coming into the game in red hot form to try and derailed the Norsemens charge. My preseason prediction will be finally be realised and the mighty Norsemen will claim their back to back Division 1 Premierships after an amazing season and defeating Balwyn twice throughout the season and having a week off will definitely be in their advantage. Lachlan Munro – EFL Media Team Norwood 1 point This is it. This is what the season has been building up to for the past 5 months, and what a thriller it will be. The 2 best teams from last year (and this year) have made it to a grand final for round 2. Norwood despite the early season hiccup have been so good all year having only lost 1 game since starting 1-3. Balwyn have been the same, only losing once all year to Norwood. This game is way too close to call, and probably one of the hardest tips that I’ve had to make all year. I think the week off will benefit Norwood greatly and be the reason that gets them over the line this year, and Leigh Williams will be the deciding factor up forward. Both sides will have to give everything they’ve got if they want to win. THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER

Aaron Kirkby-Rodier – EFL Media Team Norwood 9 points The Norseman just have that ability to get that bit extra out of themselves in a tight one. If the Tigers can get the ball on the outside and run they can seriously worry Norwood especially with the three pronged forward line of Gobbles, Broadhurst and Barker. Norwood have won 5 of the last 6 against Balwyn and have just had the bigger game players in those games. First Goal: Dean Poynton (Norwood) Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Rhett Jordon (Norwood) Davis Harrigan – EFL Media Team Norwood by 25 points We’ve come to what is quite easily the EFL’s biggest rivalry in Balwyn v Norwood. The Tigers have their redemption claws out, while Norwood just continue to roll on like a well-oiled steam train. The men in purple didn’t have the start to the season most expected, but a premiership team knows how to bounce back. Putting Balwyn away in the semifinal means there’s a mental advantage. Yet, names like Goss, Barker, Broadhurst and Gobbels are never far away. They have powerful kicking boots and eat any chance delivered into their hands. However, Jessop, Williams, Poynton, Hill and McCubbin are up to the battle. Numbers on the ladder mean very little coming into this, however Norwood’s win in 2014 could well be enough to seal two in a row. Paul Semertzidis – EFL Media Team Norwood by 4 points Licking my lips thinking about today’s game. A rematch of last year’s GF has looked a lay down misère for a number of weeks now. Norwood will undoubtedly benefit from having the week and a seemingly easier passage in to this game. Never discount the Tigers, who are playing in their 4th consecutive GF. A close game is a lock. First goal: Rhett Jordan Cliff Tomkins/ Blue Ribbon Medallist: Jayden Kroussoratis 15

DIVISION 1 CLUB NOTES Balwyn: Welcome to the “Big Dance”. Well done to all involved at Balwyn FC as we line up today for our fourth consecutive EFL Grand Final. Time now to finish our work and take home that Flag! Very exciting also to have our Reserves side in the Grand Final for the first time since we joined the EFL in 2007. Let’s make that take home 2 Flags! We wish all of the players and coaches the very best today. Play your role. All the fans in the stands are right behind you all the way – Good Luck To You All - Go Tigers! TONIGHT – AFTER THE GAMES - WE WILL ALL BE BACK AT BALWYN PARK WHATEVER HAPPENS THIS AFTERNOON. ALL WELCOME! HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! Congratulations to our skipper Rennie Gilchrist, who was named Captain in the 2015 EFL Team of the Year, along with fellow players Jeff Gobbels, Kris Pendlebury, Rod Crowe, Tom Roach, Jackson Weatherald and John Meesen. Seven Balwyn FC players in the side! Well done also to Tom Roach who was Runner Up in the Senior Best & Fairest count, and also Sam de Soysa who was Runner up in the Reserve Best & Fairest. BEST & FAIREST PRESENTATION NIGHT: Our next big social night to finalise the year, will be the B&F, which will again be held in the River Room at Crown Melbourne on Saturday 26 September, the weekend when all the Preliminary Finals are in Perth! (a week after EFL Grand Final, and a week before AFL Grand Final). Get this date into your diary and don’t miss what will be another sensational night. $150 all inclusive. Bookings with Jo on 0412 172 183 or tregear1@bigpond.com Norwood: Grand Final week is here and we have both the seniors and the U19s at the big dance at Bayswater. The seniors took the short-cut after a grinding 2nd semi win over Balwyn and have been resting up, getting all those little niggles sorted out in preparation for our tilt at going Back-To-Back in the EFL’s premier division. What a prospect that is for a club that 15 years ago was in 4th Division!!! Our Colts did it the hard way, coming all the way through the elimination final to make the Grand Final, last week’s come from behind win over Knox in the Preliminary Final particularly memorable. On Saturday night we held our Best & Fairest night, where talisman FullForward Leigh Williams took out the senior award, with skipper John Holmes and ruckman Jon Wynn filling the placings. The 2nds award was won by Gary Lisle and the Colts by Corey Quinlivan. Well done to all winners. Additionally, we celebrate Leigh Williams, Matt Aver and Stuart Hill being named in the EFL 1st Division Team Of The Year & Jarrod West as runners up in the 19’s. In a purely team game, it is still worthwhile celebrating such prestigious individual accolades. Well done also to Matt Bate and Rhett Jordon who were nominated in the original squad of 40 players. The

THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER

seniors could not be better placed leading into the Grand Final with a complete list from which to choose. Rhett Jordon looks cherry ripe after missing the 2nd semi with an ankle strain, while 19yo tearaway halfback Michael Pearson is pushing his case after missing the last 2 games with a shoulder. As always, there will be unlucky players who don’t make the final 22, but the strength of our club is the team-first mentality where all players have played their part during the year to get us this far. That is sure to continue on Saturday. With Denis Knight in charge of such a great squad of young men there is tremendous optimism about our chances on Saturday. Good luck boys, bring home the bacon. After match festivities will be at The Budgie Smuggler, 1/166 Maroondah Hwy, Ringwood from 5.30pm & Sunday Family Day from 11am at the MARK-E Vermont: We are honoured to be here on Grand Final Day with our youngest players by way of the Reserves & Under 19’s. We thank the hundreds of people who have supported the Club and the individual teams in so many ways. You are all a part of our effort today. Special thanks to our mighty sponsors big and small. Particularly to our Major Sponsors in Crackawines.com.au, Bekdon Richards, CSR Roofing, Car Sales.com, Freight Concepts, Active Lifestyle and of course, the Wantirna Hill Club& the Lilydale International. Biggest thanks goes our Coaches and former Vermont Premiership players Steve Cochrane, Paul Breen and Kris Barlow along with a wonderful group current players who have worked so hard since last October to recover from a number of departures and keep the Eagles in the First Division Finals race. The Seniors bowed out last week to an excellent Balwyn side, however we are very pleased to have been so competitive all year with so many new and young faces. Special mention to the two players who retired after last week in Grant McCarthy and Bernie Dinneen, both legends of our Club and people who have given the EFL outstanding service. We were proud to see Mitch Honeychurch play in last week’s AFL Final with the Western Bulldogs. A Vermont kid through and through. SOCIAL:- All Vermont Supporters are welcome back at a the Clubrooms later today. Tomorrow the Clubrooms will be open from 12 noon. This year we are having combined Best & Fairest Count and Presentation Dinners at the Clubrooms on Thursday the 1st of October for the Under 19’s and on Friday the 2nd October for the Seniors. There is a table plan in Social room. There is a limit of around 150, so get your name up ASAP. Finally, best wishes to all the boys who represent us today, we know you will give of your best. We are the Mighty Eagles!!! 19

Approaching veteran status, Hilly is our ever-reliable centre-half back with vice like hands a solid left foot. A quiet conservative man and teacher, he is also the unofficial captain of Norwoods Team-”Nerd” Our team skipper is a polite gentle man off the field, but a warrior and ball magnet on it. With a beautiful wife and new daughter, Holmer is spiritual leader of the Nerds Skayve is the Coach’s pet, and Denis is a good judge. A brilliant player with all the skills on the ground or in the air, Skayve is the only member of both team Nerd and Julio, such is his popularity. One of many home grown Norwood stars, Brenter is a favourite of the Norwood faithful who love to see him unleashing at goal on that booming left foot. At 29 and a tradie, Brenter is a solid citizen of team-Nerd Bater oozes class (and his home made orange juice) on the field. No wonder he’s a red-head, but as a rebounding half-back he has no peer. Anyone who treats his body as such a temple is a fully qualified Julio A Norwood junior Zac’s power-running and strong frame make him a headache for all opposition on the field. Loves a goal and very handy with a mirror, he’s a future captain of team Julio After an interrupted season, Dekkers is getting back to his best. His sure hands are always a feature. Unassuming, he is a model citizen of the Nerds where a leadership role awaits Another product of the junior program, Harro’s pace and strong frame are his biggest assets. That is of course, apart from his status as reigning “Mr Norwood” and therefore reigning team Julio B&F Probably should re-name himself Jesse James for the way he murders the opposition full-forward every week. Newmos membership in teamJulio came through after Murph and Rej were paid their bribes. Leroy has had another stellar year with his 2nd EFL goal-kicking trophy. The best forward in the EFL and the first name the opposition put on the whiteboard and into the Tinder search engine, Leroy leads team Julio in their song “I’m too sexy” Like a Silent Assassin, Whispers just cuts the opposition up week in week out on ball. They don’t hear him coming, much like Team_Nerd, who probably dont realise he is a member Began at Norwood when he was about 8, Fingers has been spreading his magic dust on Mullum Reserve ever since. Creative, brilliant, and 100% team Julio, where he is a previous B&F winner and always in the votes A fitness fanatic in his first year at Norwood, Murph is forever running his opponent off his feet. Versatile on the field, he was recruited primarily to boost the stocks of team Julio, for whom he is an eye-catching VC Another Norwood junior, Fordy missed last year’s GF and is keen to atone. Very quick and built like a tank, he was ousted from team Julio after last years Mullum Creek swim event for making them feel inadequate In his first year after crossing from East Ringwood, Gibbo has settled into his half-back role brilliantly, where his fondness for a spray tan and manscaping cement his spot in team Julio Team of the year honours for Matty who is a star on the field in many positions. Thinks he’s a star off the field too, where his efforts as a ladiesman secure his position in team Julio Yet another Norwood junior. Agile, quick and a brilliant reader of the game. Lochie loves to sell candy and bag a goal, almost as much as he loves to play Call-Of Duty. Nerdsville... Will of the wisp small forward and a good kick for goal, Tibby is never without a fashion designer beanie or hat which, along with the fact that nerds don’t have tatts, qualifies him easily for team Julio Small of stature but big of heart (and head) Matty plays every moment of every game at 100%. A coach’s delight because he is so reliable, this trait makes him a lock for the Nerds In his first year and recommended by Dennis, Stewy’s 2nd half of the season has been superb, his telescopic arms and one grab hands a feature. From the Gold Coast, the Julios couldnt be happier to have him for that “Brisvegas” touch Another product of the Norwood juniors, ACE can play both ends equally well. Very versatile and with a lethal left foot, his fondness for his hair and his pipes screams team Julio all over. The granddad of the team, Maccas season has been interrupted by injury. Can play a key role forward if needed. Playing a career role of redheaded Victoria Police Force member gives him senior status in team Nerd. A live-wire small forward with pace to burn and more tricks than David Copperfield, Kreuzzer is a professional young businessman and thus a somewhat surprising member of team nerd. A Norwood Junior, big and strong, COS has grown into the team as the year has unfolded as 2nd Ruck to Monky. With a long-term girlfriend he is clearly team nerd, unless they kick him out for being the key leak for these pen pics One of the Norwood faithfuls favourites, Monky’s ruckwork and effort is 2nd to none. A workaholic, married, smart and with a property portfolio since he was 20, here is the team Nerd pin-up boy Rej plays the game hard, straight at the ball with no fear. With pace power and class, loves to celebrate a goal. Belies his teaching profession to be Julio team captain. Rumours that he has a life-sized photo of himself in his own bedroom are scurrilous. In his first year up in the seniors, Pearso has cemented his spot as a pacy running half back. Though Denis doesnt know this - oops, ‘til now, his dedication as a party animal in team Julio was emphasised by being out at a bucks turn the night he did his shoulder.

UMPIRES CORNER By Darren Goldspink, EFL Head of Umpiring EFL Head of Umpiring Darren Goldspink pays tribute to the umpires who will be officiating in today’s 2015 Division 1 Senior Grand Final. FIELD UMPIRES Dan Beard – This will be Dan’s sixth consecutive Division 1 Grand Final, proving his ability as one of the finest field umpires in EFL History. Having returned from umpiring in the VFL in 2010 – where he is still the games record holder – he has had an enormous impact on our entire list of umpires. He readily imparts his knowledge and experience to our younger umpires who thrive in umpiring with Dan, but also sets a fine example of how to go about umpiring and how to prepare to umpire at a consistently high level. No doubt is the best Community Umpire in the country Jordan Buckingham – Jordan’s appointment to this game has been due to his consistency over the past three seasons. Having officiated in the past 2 Division 1 Grand Finals, he has again umpired at a very high standard throughout the year in all Divisions. This year he has been used in a mentoring role with some of our younger umpires and has assisted them greatly while at the same time adding greater depth to our list. Another thoroughly deserved first Division 1 Grand Final appointment to add to the honour of being named EFL Field Umpire of the Year. Jason Herman – Jason has been in our top bracket of umpires for many years. Last year he officiated in the Division 1 Grand Final and adds to his already impressive list of achievements in the EFL. We have no better umpire in terms of his commitment to umpiring, he attends every training and coaching session, is available every week which has allowed him to umpire at a consistently high level throughout the year. BOUNDARY UMPIRES Harry Green – is one of the boundary umpiring group’s most loved umpires. This is Harry’s second Division 1

Grand Final in a row and this appointment tops off a great season. He was also appointed to the officiate in the Vic Metro Representative game played on the Gold Coast over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Tristian Webb – Tristian has had a meteoric rise through the ranks this season culminating in this week’s appointment, his first Division 1 Grand Final. This is Tristian’s first Senior Grand Final at the age of 17. He has shown significant improvement this season which was highlighted by being named EFL Boundary Umpire of the Year. Brenton Dickson – Like Tristian, this is Brenton’s first Division 1 Grand Final. He has umpired Senior Grand Final’s over the last few years and through hard work and dedication to his craft, he has been able to take that last step to achieve this week’s appointment. Brenton also officiates as a field umpire the EFL Juniors Jesse Hayward – Jesse, like Tristian and Brenton will officiate in his first Division 1 Grand Final. He umpired in last year’s Division 2 Grand Final and has stepped up this year to be one of our leading boundary umpires. Jesse, like Brenton, also officiates as a Junior Field umpire with the EFL. GOAL UMPIRES Greg Alford - Greg’s commitment to goal umpiring this year cannot be surpassed. He has been rewarded by being appointed to this year’s 1st Division Grand Final. In addition Greg heads up the leadership group and is always passing on his knowledge and expertise to our younger and less experienced goal umpires. Ashley Powney - Hard work, dedication and commitment are the reasons for Ashley being appointed to his first ever 1st Division Grand Final. Always the bridesmaid but never the bride, Ashley can now add to his resume that he has umpired the ultimate game of the season, a 1st Division GF. I know that his peers will be supporting him for the BIGGEST game of his career.

EASTERN RANGES The Eastern Ranges are through to the TAC Cup Preliminary Finals after ending the Geelong Falcons finals campaign in a stirring win. Under the heat at IKON Park, the Ranges put the Falcons to the sword to send them packing in straight sets. The Ranges took no time to get going, scoring four straight goals in the opening quarter. The Falcons however missed opportunities and will rue early missed shots at goal. The Ranges were accurate for most of the day, save for some late shots when the fire in the game had gone out. Ryan Clarke was again outstanding through the middle of the ground, picking up 30 disposals, including 9 marks, 6 clearances and 10 inside 50s. No other Ranges player picked up more than 19 disposals with Eastern actually losing the possession count 276 – 305, highlighting the side’s effective use with ball in hand. Geelong star Darcy Parish was well held for most of the day, having little impact on the game. Meanwhile, 16 year-old Jaidyn Stephenson kicked 2 goals up forward, one of which included lining up for a set shot and instinctively running around the man on the mark to kick a classy goal. The Ranges will be extremely happy with their performance against the Falcons, and will take confidence from the game into their Preliminary Final matchup with the Dandenong Stingrays. In other news, a number of Ranges boys polled well at the TAC Cup Morrish Medal night held at Etihad Stadium last weekend. Darcy Crocker finished on a total of 14 votes, just one shy of the winning 15 votes for Murray Bushranger, Clayton Oliver. The club is proud to have four players finish in the top 6 of the Morrish Medal, displaying the spread of talent!

THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER

Congratulations to Darcy Crocker (14 votes), Blake Hardwick (13), Ryan Clarke (12) and Aaron Fenton (10) for their deserved recognition. Further congratulations to Clarke and Hardwick who were named in the 2015 TAC Cup Team of the Year! Hardwick also took home the 2015 Leading Goalkicker award for his 46 goals.
