INSIDE THE EFL Senior representative football takes centre stage Welcome to the 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships. Following the successful debut season of the Brett Connell newly formatted senior AFL Victoria Community representative competition Football & Engagement last year, we are pleased Manager to continue to provide community leagues with the chance to battle it out for the ultimate local footy bragging rights. The 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships promises to deliver another exciting round of community football, as the opportunity to participate in senior representative programs continues to be a highlight for footballers in community competitions across the state. Today, a total of 30 leagues will compete in a one off head-to-head match across 15 different venues around Victoria. This season, the Community Championships will take centre stage, with a host of players set to showcase their skills in front of big crowds in the heart of Melbourne’s sporting precinct. Childhood dreams of playing on Australian football’s most hallowed turf will become a reality for a number of community footballers, with representative players from the number-oneranked Geelong Football Netball League and second-placed Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League set to battle it out for the coveted number-one ranking title on the MCG. The match will be played as a curtain-raiser to the Round 8 dedicated AFL Country Game between Essendon and Geelong. This is a fantastic opportunity for not only players,

but for umpires, coaches and volunteers to run out on the game’s biggest stage. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making this match a reality, including our competition sponsor WorkSafe, AFL, Essendon and Geelong Football Clubs for their support. In addition to the Championships, the next generation of community football stars will also have the opportunity to don their local colours in a number of junior representative matches being played as curtain raisers to their Community Championship senior game. This is a terrific initiative for younger players to be able to showcase their talent, represent their league and test their skills against some of the best players across metropolitan Melbourne and country Victoria. Following on from a successful 2017 Community Umpiring Round last week, I would like to congratulate all the umpires who have been selected to adjudicate in today’s matches. Their hard work, dedication and strong performances either in the V/Line Umpiring Academies or metropolitan league associations will put them in good stead to officiate community football’s top players. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the leagues, staff, players, coaches and volunteers involved in the 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, for their enthusiasm and support in the lead up to the event. We hope that you enjoy the experience and wish you the best of luck for the remainder of the 2017 football season. Brett Connell AFL Victoria Community Football & Engagement Manager

MOYLE EXCITED BY CHALLENGE By: Daniel Cencic, Twitter: @DC_EFL

T

he 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships have arrived.

Led by coach Brett Moyle, the Eastern Football League takes on the Essendon District Football League today at Bayswater Oval, with the stakes at a high. A victory against the EDFL would mean the EFL plays off for the number-one rank in the main game in 2018 – after its 24-point loss to the Geelong league in 2016 pushed it back to third rank. After an initial squad of around 60 was named last month, Moyle faced the tough challenge of picking his side and reducing the list to just of the EFL’s most exciting footballers. “It (was) going to be a challenge to try and cut the squad down, because there’s a lot of good players,” Moyle said. “Every player that’s going to be removed is going to be a good player.” While the initial squad has been virtually cut in half over the last fortnight, Moyle faces his next challenge before 2.15pm Saturday “It’s not going to be a lot of fun for me but we need to get it down to the best 22,” he said. Norwood leads the charge with six players named, followed by Vermont and Rowville with five each. Rowville’s Cam Manuel features among the squad, with the 2016 Chandler medallist forming the list of eight Rowville players named. “He’s keen to play, which is good,” Moyle said. “I think Cam really embraced the whole thing last year and he’s right on board with it again which is great.” Rounding out the Hawks’ selected players include Lachlan McDonald, Matthew Davey, Damian Garner and club captain Alex Frawley. The Norsemen boast Dean Poynton, Stuart Hill, 10

The Eastern Footballer

Matthew Aver, Leigh Williams, Lochlan Dickson and the returning Rhett Jordan in the squad. Under the tutelage of Norwood senior coach Denis Knight – the former EFL senior interleague coach - all players have been encouraged to play, as Knight told EFL GameDay a fortnight ago that he was on board with the concept of interleague during the season. With a plethora of forwards to choose from, the tantalising prospect of seeing any of Leigh Williams, Jake Tucker, Jake Best and Jake Hammond – to name just a few – in the same forward line is set to excite all EFL followers. “It’s hard to fit them all in (and) due to injury to a couple of key ones and unavailability we were left with one or two of the best goal kickers in the comp, whereas this year we’re going to be left with a lot of options,” Moyle said. “Jake Tucker kicked seven goals for South Croydon (in Round 3) and Hammond kicked four as well and Jake Best is kicking a few with Vermont. “There’s lots of different options there for sure.” Tucker has enjoyed a fruitful first month of the season, kicking goals each week for South Croydon who is currently undefeated after four rounds. A bag of seven on Anzac Day against Blackburn at Cheong Park is Tucker’s biggest haul for the year. Meanwhile, a bag of six against Norwood in Round 1 and four against South Croydon on Anzac Day has formed part of Jake Hammond’s blistering start to the season for Blackburn, who looks a dangerous prospect up forward for the EFL should he play against the EDFL. Last weekend saw Hammond register two majors in his side’s 28-point win over Noble Park. Among the Vermont players in the squad, Jake Best, Adam Parker, Liam Wale-Buxton and Robbie McComb were all named in Vermont’s best last weekend in the win over Rowville, with Rory Lehmann also enjoying a strong

start to season 2017 named in the best twice. In what is yet another accolade on an illustrious football CV for Brett Moyle, which includes captaining Balwyn’s 2008 premiership side and coaching North Ringwood to premierships in 2012 and 2014, Moyle can’t wait to coach 22 of the League’s superstars. “It’s a real honour,” he said.

and pick a side, but what we’re going to be left with is a really good side to be in charge of.” A former senior interleague representative himself, Moyle knows the significance of playing for the EFL at representative level and performing on the big stage. “I really enjoyed it,” he said.

“Last year when we didn’t win, I wasn’t sure that I’d be asked again so I’m glad I’ve been asked again to do it.

“That’s something I tried to impart onto our players last year and I will again (this year) of how much I enjoyed the experience of playing in a game like this.

“It’s really enjoyable working with all the best players and while it has its challenges to try

“I hope all the players see that opportunity the same way and are desperately keen to play.”

LEADER YOUNG GUN By: Toby Prime (Leader Newspapers) HARESH Sitharather was hardly in Steve Buckle’s planning in the pre-season. From the Beverley Hills under-17s, Sitharather has made a seamless transition to senior football at Doncaster East. Coach Steve Buckle said the slightly built Sitharather held his own through pre-season and the Lions’ practice matches, with his performances demanding selection for Round 1. “He can play multiple positions but is best suited to behind the footy coming off half-back, he reads the play pretty well and has a pretty good pair of hands,” Buckle said. “We had a few kids we thought might possibly be able to step into some senior footy this year but through the pre-season and the way he trained, we were pretty happy with the way he was tracking.” Sitharather has gone from working his way off the bench and rotating through the Lions’ defensive group to be a starting member of the back six.

“He has good speed, reads the game pretty well and he is a pretty good intercept marker,” Buckle said. “We’ve tried him in a few different positions to give him a look on a personal level and try to keep developing different areas of his game. “The last two weeks he has started as part of that back six so that tells you how much we think of him and how he has been tracking.” Sitharather’s performances have earned him the Round 4 nomination for the Division 1 and 2 Eastern Football League Young Gun Award. Sitharather is joined by Templestowe’s Matthew Zukiewicz, who is this week’s Division 3 and 4 nominee.

VOICE IN THE OUTER

I

am the faceless man standing and cheering. I am the man whose hear t bleeds for his team. You hear me every Saturday as the boys run onto the ground. You hear me celebrate ever y goal. You hear me scream out in agony and cry out in ecstasy. I have an opinion. I have passion. I am the “Voice in the Outer”. I’m not normally a prophetic man. I don’t overthink situations and rarely ponder the deeper meanings of life. Recently though, I reflected on the way life tends to evolve in cycles. There are definite phases in our lives that bring periods of happiness and then times of sadness and despair. You rejoice in the good and have to work through the difficult periods. Like a rollercoaster, there are ups where you reach enormous heights, followed by troughs where you slump to lows. It helps you develop as a person and makes you stronger in character. It’s how you evolve through these periods that ultimately define who you are as a person. One thing is for certain though. In the words of William Shakespeare, “life will always come full circle.” If you ride through the perils of the challenges, rewards will return. The Whitehorse Pioneers Football Club has ridden this wave of fortune and appears to be now emerging again at the other side. Like the hands on a clock, perpetually revolving around the dial, the Pioneers look to be back on the verge of seeing some success. Since joining the Eastern Football League in 1998, the boys from Springfield Park have had three distinct phases in their level of results. It took the Pioneers a few seasons to initially find their feet in the EFL. Just 12 wins from their first 67 games in the competition saw them make their way down to Division 4 after what could only be described as an initial baptism of fire.

www.efl.org.au

Having worked through the tough times though, 2002 brought on a period of some hard fought success. Over the next seven seasons, the club would play in finals six times, a Division 4 grand final in 2006 and ultimately claim their first EFL premiership in 2007. Whitehorse looked ready to make their move back up into Division 3 and instantly found they were a competitive unit at the higher level. Despite just missing finals in their first season in the higher division, the Pioneers returned the following year in 2009 and went one step further finishing fourth and partaking in the September action. Like that never-ending cycle of highs and lows though, Whitehorse’s fortunes took a turn for the worse in 2010. The club has ridden through this and despite never having won more than six games in a season since that time and experiencing finishing on the bottom of the Division 3 ladder in both 2011 and 2015, has remained upbeat and positive. With Derek Shaw coming on as senior coach, one started to feel that the Pioneers were ready to once again stake a claim for renewed success. Even though Whitehorse only finished seventh at the end of 2016, they defeated finalist Donvale throughout the season and suffered only narrow losses to both the premier, Ferntree Gully and runner-up, Forest Hill by one and two goals respectively. The signs were there that things were on the improve. The start of 2017 however has seen the emergence of the Pioneers as a genuine contender. They sit undefeated after four rounds of the season, with wins against three sides that finished above them on the ladder last year in Kilsyth, Glen Waverley and Surrey Park. The next era of success may be right on the doorstep of Springfield Park. Whitehorse is starting to announce itself that its time may be approaching. If the window of opportunity exists between 12 o’clock and 3pm, it’s now approaching midday for the mighty Pioneers. I’ll see you in the outer!

DEMPSEY LOOKS FORWARD TO HIT-OUT By: JULIA MONTESANO

COURTENAY Dempsey walked into the EDFL looking for a new opportunity to re-discover his true love of football. Dempsey was a hard battler in his years at Essendon, both on and off the field. Not only was he one of the most ruthless defenders in the competition, but he was also faced with a number of injuries and of course. But following his 133-game stint at Essendon which spanned a decade, Dempsey is hoping to bring experience to the EDFL Interleague squad as they continue their thorough preparations to take on the Eastern Football League this Saturday. The 29-year-old admits that “a lot of these players understand the football game really well”, but is still eager to further develop the talent present in the team, in order to really take it up to the strength and versatility of the EFL’s players. For him personally, Dempsey is looking forward to not only a good hit-out against the EFL, but also to start enjoying footy again. “I’ve come down to the EDFL and I’m enjoying it. I’m finding the love of the game again and the reason why I enjoy playing footy,” Dempsey said. “It’s a lot more exciting than I expected it to be. I’m enjoying the time out there and enjoying having fun all the time.” He also likes the fact the footy can be “serious when it needs to be”, highlighting not only the entertainment factor of the EDFL, but the serious competitiveness present in the league. Despite possessing the talent that he has, the former Essendon defender admitted that he didn’t expect to be picked in the Interleague side in his first year as an EDFL footballer. In fact, he didn’t even know there was an Interleague competition. However, Dempsey is very appreciative of getting another opportunity to showcase his talent and skills Bayswater on Saturday. “I’m very honoured to be picked in it EDFL Interleague squad and hopefully I’ll be able to get a run in the game,” Dempsey said. www.efl.org.au

The Greenvale defender is confident that the EDFL Interleague side can match it with the third-ranked EFL, praising the talent and the experience of the players who received the honour to play in the squad. “We are understanding that the EFL is a very tough league but in saying that, we are a very tough league as well and we can hit it up with any other competition in Victoria,” Dempsey said. Despite having only five games under his belt in the EDFL, Dempsey admits that “the standard’s actually a really good standard of footy”, giving an indication of the level of competitiveness that the Interleague side is hoping to bring over to Bayswater. Not only is he focused on getting a win, but Dempsey is aiming to enjoy his time out at Bayswater, rubbing shoulders with the EDFL’s finest. The Interleague journey for Courtenay Dempsey is one of self-discovery, enjoyment and determination to take a victory back to his new home in the EDFL.

GALEA GEARING UP FOR INTERLEAGUE CLASH By: JULIA MONTESANO

HE has been a two-time leading goal-kicker in the VFL, been the leading goal-kicker multiple times here in the EDFL- including 101 goals last year, and he won Avondale Heights’ B&F in 2014. Dean Galea is the man you want in your Interleague side and he’s more motivated than ever to taste Interleague glory. It’s Galea’s third successive time being picked in the side, and he’s honoured to be playing with and against the “best of the best” on Saturday. “Brodie (Holland) rang me about three weeks ago to see if I was interested in playing,” Galea said. “I couldn’t say yes quick enough.” If anyone knows the rewards that come out of the Interleague experience, it’s Galea. The Keilor forward has kicked five goals in his last two Interleague matches against the Southern Football League in 2015 and against the Goulburn Valley Football League in 2016. Galea is hoping to assert his own dominance once again against the Eastern Football League at Bayswater.

www.efl.org.au

“My job is to kick goals and if I didn’t kick goals, I wouldn’t be doing my job,” he said. This year, Galea will play with a number of star EDFL forwards, with fellow Keilor spearhead, Jason Williams, former Avondale Heights sparring partner, Patrick Rose and of course, ex-Carlton and Collingwood forward, Cameron Cloke, all helping him out in the forward line. “It’s going to be a pretty high level of football,” he said of the game against the EFL. “There’s going to be a lot of good footballers running around.” Galea is familiar with the talent present in the EFL side, after playing a couple of practice matches against some of their boys in the pre-season. “It’s a strong competition,” he said. He also eluded to the “rivalry” between the EFL and the EDFL, setting up a fierce match between the two more elite sides in the state, rated third and fourth in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championship rankings, respectively. “I don’t know why, but I think we both think that we’re better than each other,” Galea said of the rivalry between the two leagues. The EFL has a similar squad to the EDFL squad – both containing young players, so the dominant forward sees no reason why the EDFL can’t come away with its third consecutive Interleague win. “I think it’s the best players you can find in the competition bar injuries and suspension,” Galea said. “You know it’s going to be a high-quality game.” But above all, Galea is looking forward to the enjoyment of again representing his league. “I enjoy the pressure and I enjoy playing in big games,” he said. “I just try to enjoy the footy as much as I can.” As soon as it was revealed that the EDFL would be taking on the EFL in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships this year, everyone knew it was going to be a spectacle that was not to be missed. But now, knowing that one of the most influential players is raring to go for the fierce contest, it makes the cut-throat match all the more exciting.

DOGS’ DELIGHT South Croydon has taken all before it so far in season 2017. An undefeated opening month has seen the Bulldogs defeat Bayswater, Blackburn, North Ringwood and East Ringwood, as the Bulldogs look to play finals for the first time since 2013. Explosive goal-kicker Jake Tucker looks set to line up for the EFL in the 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships at Bayswater Oval, adding to the Dogs’ successful start. “We’re rapt at the moment,” senior coach Leigh Adams said “We’ve played some really good footy and our best win has probably been against a quality side of Blackburn.” South Croydon will play Vermont after the interleague break, where Adams believes the Bulldogs will find out more about we’re they sit in the pecking order of the EFL’s top flight. “It’s been a good start but I think we’ll find out a little bit more about where we’ll finish up in the next few weeks when we take on some really good quality teams,” he said. The new recruits at Cheong Park have shone in the early part of the season, including Matt Jones, Max King, Dale Walker and Jason Want.

By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL In his second year at the helm, Adams has seen his side’s development somewhat fast-tracked this season after his first season as coach, with the players learning the game-plan and understanding structures. Adams believes his side began to click late last season when it finished the year on a high. “I think it always takes you a minimum of a year to get the boys to buy in to the game-plan and then understand what we’re trying to do and get their head around it,” he said. “In the last five or six rounds last year where we won four of the last six, the boys really started to get on board and understand what we’re trying to do. “With another pre-season under our belts, a few new recruits, it’s been able to fast-track our development of the game-plan a bit more.” Managing training loads at this point of the season is key for the undefeated Bulldogs, where a big month of tests awaits beginning with Vermont after the week off, followed by Montrose, Doncaster and Rowville. “With the interleague coming up, we’ll get a bit more training into the boys, have a solid session and have a good weekend off before a really big game for our club,” Adams said.

Adams has been impressed with the class his recruits have brought to the club, and the depth of the playing list. “Our recruits have been fantastic so far this year,” he said. “Not only just getting five or six new blokes into the footy club has given us a bit of depth which is great (and) blokes don’t know their position is safe. “We ended up having 13 players who played in the seniors last year playing in the reserves.” Max King in particular has proven his worth at the Bulldogs, causing opposition coaches headaches each week with his versatility around the ground. “He’s really athletic for his size as well, he’s 202 centimetres and he can jump as well (and) with that reach there’s not too many blokes who can get their hands up that high,” Adams said.

EASTERN RANGES Round 7 The Ranges are back at Box Hill City Oval to host the Bendigo Pioneers this weekend! The side is coming off their second win of the season last weekend and will be looking to stay on the winner’s list. In what was an exciting game of TAC Cup football last week against the Gippsland Power, the Ranges managed to kick a goal with less than 2 minutes left on the clock to score a nail-biting win by 2 points. A reminder to all our Player Sponsors that framed photos of their players are now available at the club. Please get in touch with your player to have them pass this on to you or contact the club if you need extra assistance. For more information on Player Sponsorships please visit our website. COMPLETE INJURY CARE The EFL is pleased to announce we have created a program with five leading medical providers to establish a player injury care program unrivalled in community sport.

from internationally trained and highly regarded surgeons.

The program is EFL Complete Injury Care, and through Lifecare, Vermont Urgent Care, Capital Radiology, Sports Med Biologic and Orthopaedic Specialists Melbourne, we are creating a level of expert care for EFL players usually reserved for those at the elite level.

Concussion is, understandably, an important topic for our industry. It’s an area research has shown most local GP’s aren’t comfortable dealing with, and that as an industry we need to be cognisant of providing the best level of care possible. Through this program and the fast access to the level of care available at Sports Med Biologic this is possible.

Lifecare, are a leading provider of physiotherapy and sports medicine services who have had a relationship with the EFL for in excess of 25 years. Vermont Urgent Care is a walk in doctor’s surgery open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to provide immediate care to injured players without waiting for hours at the public hospital or paying significant money before you walk in the door at a private hospital, with X-Ray available. Capital Radiology provide the full range of radiology services such as X-ray, CT scans and MRI, with quality care and fast communication with patients and other medical professionals. Sports Med Biologic are a sports medical clinic based in Box Hill of which the doctors have experience at the elite level of sport, mostly with AFL clubs, and will provide expert concussion care, both pre-screening and post injury management. And Orthopaedic Specialists Melbourne will help provide quick access to expert orthopaedic services

Vermont Urgent Care - Walk in Doctors Clinic. No appointment needed. 5 Boronia Road, Vermont http://vermonturgentcare.com.au/ Ph: 9874 3344

The program helps address two key concerns.

The second is when a player is hurt and needs immediate attention, or looks to have seriously injured themselves. With this program, the player can be assessed on the weekend at Vermont Urgent Care, be in getting scans on Monday at Capital Radiology, if they need to consult with an orthopaedic surgeon it will be done in a couple of days though OSM, and if surgery is required they could be on the operating table by the end of the week. Then post-surgery they can get expert rehabilitation though Lifecare to help get back on the ground ASAP. It’s a level of care only seen at the elite level but now available to community footballers. Keep your eye on the EFL website (efl.org.au) for more information on the program or contact the provider directly via the details below.

DIVISION 3 PARK ORCHARDS: Today we welcome top of the ladder Boronia to Domeney Reserve in a game between two young and exciting 3rd Division sides. We look forward to a great game as the team looks to build on the momentum it gained last weekend against Scoresby. After a poor game against Warrandyte the week before, the seniors went into the Scoresby game without their full forward, ruckman and centre half back. With backs against the wall and being down at half time, the boys played tough and relentless football in wet and difficult conditions to hold Scoresby to one goal after half time - we kicked five ourselves and ran out winners by seven points. Chappell was outstanding in the ruck and captain T. Feher, Wiggins and the whole playing group were able to force stoppage after stoppage to kill any chance the opposition had of pinching the game. In the other games, the D Squad chalked up another win with S. Pollard, J. Nicholson and Hudson in the best and the U19’s held Scoresby scoreless in the second half to run out easy winners – Heron, Cridland and Williamson in the best. Our netballers registered two wins and a draw on Friday night with the white team drawing against Scoresby, the red team winning by 10 points against UFTG and the black team accounting for Coldstream 32 to 5. Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our new jumper sponsor, the AGI Group. We appreciate the support of AGI and all of our sponsors and encourage all Sharks people to support these businesses wherever possible. Go Sharks!

BORONIA: Seniors: In a scrappy first half the guys were down by a couple of goals at the main break. Coach Brown moved his swingman forward, we produced a 6 goal 3rd qtr and ran out winners by 15 points. Freakshow kicked 3 and was BOG. Robbo and Corey 2 each. Doddy and Collo both played their roles. The D Squad In a tight game the fellas won by 3 points. Webby was BOG for a second week straight, Roza kicked 2 and was 2nd best with Agars 3rd. Colts The colts had a draw despite having 5 more scoring shots. Fewy, Dukey and Hoffy were our best. Vets The old boys went down by 71 points in their first game for the season to Scoresby. Stiffy, Surgeon and Hollywood were our best players. Netballers Boronia Hawks had a great win against new premier league side Montrose. They had a tough first quarter as they had trouble transitioning from defence to attack but after regrouping at quarter time they took control of the game. Work rate and focus was high and this earnt the girls a 25 goal win. Best players; Bec McMahon, Mel Martinov and Petra Keogh. Boronia Gold Going into this game the girls knew this would be a tough one. Boronia Gold lost by 2 in a competitive and strong game that could have gone either way, but unfortunately it went in favour of Montrose. Final score 27-29. A tight game all the way to the end. Although we lost, it was an absolute ripper of a game and everyone should be very proud of how they played. Montrose are a training team who have been playing together for a few years and were finalists last year, we stepped up and made them fight for their win! Dani in the mid court this week had a big influence especially in the last quarter in WA where she made some great leads. Belinda proved herself strong as GK. Katie was a major force in the Centre this week and worked the defence ring well with Jess in the last quarter. Everyone deserves a mention for a game well played. We can walk away proud of a game well fought. Boronia Brown looking to keep our perfect start to the season alive came up against a much taller Norwood side. The girls started with a bang with great team work to lead by 8 at 1/4 time and 4 at the 1/2. A fiercely contested game stepped up to another level in the 3rd quarter with Boronia keeping there heads to lead by 3 at the final change. With the first 4 goals of the last quarter the girls maintained a steady 8 to 10 goal lead to run out winners by 8. Best on court and a great start to the season by Mollie McMahon continued to work the circle well with Jess Hall and a special mention To the whole team who put together the best team performance we have seen in 3 years. Looking forward to another strong performance next week against the 7th placed Lilydale. Social Events Saturday May 27th – Gala Ball. See Snico for tickets Saturday June 3rd – Ladies Lunch. DIVISION 3 HEATHMONT: TODAY we welcome Warrandyte to the Hangar good luck of all teams, and also the Ladies of the club to our annual LADIES LUNCH no doubt for an enjoyable day. LAST SATURDAY was a ‘typical’ Melbourne day, bathed in sunshine for the first two games, and the scorelines showed that, then the rain for the start of the seniors! Congrats to the club on another three wins. The Under 19’s kept their unbeaten record in tact with solid win against Chirnside Park by 92 points. They moved the ball well and were very accurate in front of goal, with Josh Robertson and Wade Van Leeuwan both kicking 6 apiece and Ben Irvine seemingly everywhere. They now share top spot on the ladder with Park Orchards. The Dev Squad were forced to make a few changes this week from the winning formula of last week but they didn’t miss a beat and continued where they left off. It was a great team effort by all players with our forward line well and truly firing. Chris Columbo made his presence felt with 5 goals with Godra, Furney, Dave and Trent also adding to the total. The Squad won by 81points and had their second win for the season on the board! Then the rain came. It was a different ball game for the Seniors in the wet conditions for the first time this season. Goals were hard to come by and the free flowing game was made more difficult by the weather. Although Jarrod Spurrell managed 4 for the day. The score changed regularly with no team able to capitalise, until the 24 minute mark in the last when the Jets managed to break the deadlock with two quick goals that saw them take the game by 22 points and make it three wins for the club and a share of top spot on the ladder. SOCIAL EVENTS – Business Lunch Fri June 2 – see Brad Munro, Poker Night June 3 – see Anne Parker. Keep up to date www.heathmontjets. com & Facebook.

WARRANDYTE: Round 4 saw us take on South Belgrave in a game that had high hopes for us. Back to back wins would have set up our season but it was not to eventuate. The day was sponsored by Madisons Lawyers and a lot of work went in to advertising the day. It was also a pity that the weather was not kind to us. South Belgrave showed the determination and fight that we possessed last week against Park Orchards and unfortunately we could not match it. We had three senior players unavailable, lost one of our players post selection and another at quarter time with an injury but these are not excuses. On a positive note, our development team had their first win for the season and played a fantastic game. It was well deserved and it’s onwards and upwards for them. This week sees us traveling to Heathmont to play a confident and experienced team that are undefeated and sitting second on the ladder. The following week sees us back at home for the Fletchers Real Estate sponsored day.

DIVISION 3 RINGWOOD: Last week we travelled to Ferntree Gully and it proved to be a good day for the club with both sides recording good victories. The Reserves displayed a solid four quarter effort and controlled the game for the majority of it and were never troubled to record their third victory and maintain their spot near the top of the ladder. The seniors were every slow to begin and if not for inaccurate shooting for goal by the opposition we would’ve faced a bigger deficit than 2 goals at the first break. The margin was the same at half time however the signs were showing us getting into the game and after a good third term we had grabbed the lead and led by a goal at the last break. We finished full of running and piled on the goals in the last quarter to run out convincing winners to record a much needed first victory for the year. Don’t forget to book your ticket to our 120th year celebration night which is being held on Friday June 2 @ The Coach starting at 7.00pm. For full details see Don Burns or visit the club’s website with bookings available on Try Booking. Today we welcome South Belgrave to Jubilee Park and we invite them to join us for drinks in the social rooms during and after the games. Good luck to both sides and let’s hope our good form continues and we record another couple of victories.

SOUTH BELGRAVE: After a somewhat indifferent start to the year our Senior team put some solid footy together to have a terrific 53-point win against Warrandyte in slippery conditions at the Bloods ground. Our defence stood up and constantly drove the ball to our forwards led by Bakes and Piva who kicked 4 each. All round team effort with some great work by Costa and Cormack down back, Condor, Stow and Purvis in the middle with the young blokes in Bartels and Robertson giving us a glimpse of the future. The Ressies were beaten again but there were some good signs coming out of the game with the new blokes starting to get a bit of the ball, better players were Doxy, Weeman, Phelo, Big Country and the Dazza. Stick together and the results will come. Our 19s ventured to Silvan to take on the Glen Waverley Eagles and in a great display managed to kick away in the last quarter for a well-deserved 15-point win. This team is improving every week and some really strong teamwork got the boys across the line. Our Veterans played South Croydon under lights at our home ground on Sunday afternoon and took it right up to last year’s grand finalists only going down by 3-4 goals. Thanks to those that called in to support them and helped in the setup and pack up and of course on the BBQ and Bar. We need more people like you that are always there to help. Our Netballers in the “Red” Team had another resounding win and find themselves on top of the ladder in Div 7 but unfortunately our “Black” team were beaten narrowly again going down by a goal in Div 5. On the social scene, we have our first function next week after the Chirnside Park game at home. QUEST NIGHT being hosted by our netballers so make sure you are there to support it. Good luck to all who pull on the red, white and black this week.

SCORESBY: We head off to Kimberley Reserve, Chirnside Park for the first time as a senior club. We look forward to 3 great matches, and look take the points back to our part of the eastern suburbs. Last week’s results were not what we had hoped for. The netballers had a good comeback to force a draw against Park Orchards, setting up a big Saturday with the same mob. The 19s were missing a few key talls and struggled in the stoppages in the 2nd half without a recognised ruckman. Josh Du Vallon led from the front in a losing side. Frog’s 2s were left under the pump with players attending a music festival instead and the result could have been worse if not for poor goalkicking by Park Orchards. Congrats to Scott Castledine on your 100th game. The Seniors looked the goods for most of the day, but the tale of the day was a poor 2nd half. Ben Bronsgeest tried hard all day, but we lost a winnable game. Scott Duncan played his 100th and Michael Phillips his 50th. Congrats to both. On the Sunday, the Vets had a big win over Boronia, conceding only 2 goals. Off the field, we had our Players Auction and Magpietonian luncheon – thanks to Carly Fraser and Michael Bourke for your efforts. Next, we move onto our $5K draw on May 27th. Make sure you get your tickets and money back to Larry Hall on Thursday nights or at the game. Sir Scoresby is not far away on June 3rd. The boys are hitting the gym in preparation.

DIVISION 4 FAIRPARK: A massive CONGRATULATIONS is in order to Craig Banks and the Under 17’s for notching up their first win of the season. The boys really played as a unit to get the win in a low scoring affair against The Basin Bears at their home ground. The winning continued for the Fairpark Yellow Netball Girls who are still undefeated with a commanding win of Heathmont. Even with a couple of new players, the team comes together under Jordan’s leadership and everyone plays their rolls to a tee. Unfortunately Fairpark Red Netball Girls didn’t have the same luck and lost their first game of the season to Mooroolbark. The competition in Div 2 is tight and there will be no easy games to make finals this year, but the girls are playing well for their first season at Fairpark. It was a tough day on Saturday with both our Seniors and Reserves going down to Surrey Park. The Seniors had their chances throughout the game and even lead for a small part in the last quarter but were unable to get the job done going down by 11 points. The Reserves were on the back foot from the start and could not build any momentum to help them get back in the game and suffered a big loss. Hopefully we can get a good week of training under our belt and turn a few of the frowns upside down with a couple of wins this week at home again.

WHITEHORSE PIONEERS: Down at Horse Stadium the club saw a great effort by all three sides having solid wins against Kilsyth. The 19’s kicked the day off in a must win game which saw the first half in a bit of an arm wrestle. Skipper Tadan VITACCA lead by example all day with his physicality at the footy which helped the boys break open the game in the third quarter kicking 5 goals to 2 goals. Charlie CLIFFORD returned to the 19’s after playing his first game in the senior side last week, he snagged two majors and had it at least 30 times for the day. Xavier FRY had a stand out game, kicking two goals and getting plenty of ball, earning himself best of field honours. Playing his first game for the pioneers, Dana DIPOALA was unstoppable at Centre Half forward snagging three majors. Ritchie KEANE and Samuel VASSILIOUS were also very dangerous in the forward line kicking 3 majors each. The boy’s big winners by 53 points and a great team effort. The reserves continued to their great start this year defeating Kilsyth. Coach Joel DALEY inspired the reserves before the game and came out firing! The boys led from start to finish and were never challenged running out 44 point winners. The return of veteran and new father Chris Job boosted the forward line, booting three majors for the day and a memorable non preferred left foot snap in front of the club rooms which got the pioneer faithful in full voice. Chris Job also has not stopped mentioning it since kicking the goal. Other great efforts saw the return of Michael FERGUSON kicking two goals with Dan BONNET also chiming in with two goals. New recruit Alex TOWNSEND had another great game getting plenty of footy. Whilst Nick BERTACCO, Harry “the wizard” THORN and the Dorking Road Specialist Shaun NOLAN all had great games. The boys now go 3-1, a great start to the season with another big challenge next week against Fair Park. The seniors came up against an impressive undefeated Kilsyth line-up. Kilsyth shot out of the blocks kicking the first two goals in what was wet a slippery conditions. The boys rallied and hit back with two majors but went into the first break down by 12 points. The second quarter was a real arm wrestle, however Whitehorse regained some ascendency through the midfield led by Mitch WARD, Jacob DALEY and skipper Maverick GLEED getting plenty of ball and driving it forward causing it to be all tied up at half time. The third quarter was set alight by speedster Matt BERTACCO and goal kicking magician Marcus TIPPETT, both causing havoc for Kilsyth defenders, each booting multiple goals for the quarter and both ending up with four majors for the match. The back six were super, led by Chris RYAN, Adam BLYTHMAN and Ricky BEVAN. Michael MCDOUGALL continued his great start to the year and was never beaten and racked up plenty of disposals. Damien BERTACCO hit back with some good form, while Brad FARLEY and Matt MCCORMACK had it on a string. Whitehorse kicked away and at three quarter time led by 26 points. The last quarter started much like the third, kicking the first two goals and putting the game to bed. A few late goals to Kilsyth but it wasn’t enough, the pioneers running away to a hard fought 19 point win, making it four on the trot and a terrific start to the season 4-0. This week’s challenge is Fair Park away. A big congratulation to Lachie BACON being nominated for the young gun award. BACON has had a terrific start to the season and is in sizzling form. Ladies Night is on Saturday 21st of May after the home Donvale match, tickets are now being sold for $30 and is anticipated to be the biggest amount of women ever to be seen at a suburban football function. Get around the Pioneers in Season 2017, feed the horse.

FOREST HILL: A big week for the club as we made the trip to Coldstream with our seniors looking to bounce back from their defeat at the hands of Donvale. Forest Hill got off to a great start and lead Coldstream at quarter time. In a closely contested game in tough conditions Coldstream ended up taking the points by 3 goals, and deserve to be on top of the ladder after 4 rounds as one of two undefeated teams. We lead at QT and lost the game by 3 goals outscoring Coldstream in the LQ. The Seniors are 2-2 the same as this time last season and look to keep building more consistency for today’s game against Glen Waverley Hawks and beyond. Our Netballers had another great weekend with all three sides recording good wins. Congratulations to club stalwart Alannah Coleman who has been appointed Coach of the Under 19 Representative Netball side. All 3 Junior sides playing at home enjoyed wins including our girls team. The Under 10s won 3 out of their 4 games at Lightning Premiership so the junior ranks are looking strong at Zebra land. This week as we travel to take on Glen Waverley Hawks the Seniors will be looking for a win and the Reserves will be keen to maintain their top position. Saturday night is one of the club’s biggest function; the $5k Draw. $100 gets you entry for 2, basic beverages, finger food and a chance at $5k in vouchers. If you haven’t already got your ticket get down to the club after the match and pay at the door for a great night. Go Zebras!

DIVISION 4 SURREY PARK: The under 19s had the week of this week with a bye. The Reserves don’t like losing, as this week they bounced back from their only loss to chalk up another win, running out victorious against Fairpark. Luke ‘Teddy’ Jackson was a thirsty centre half forward, having himself a Furphy’s day out, with a six-pack of goals. Club legend Jimmy proved the price was Wright, when he kicked a spectacular boo-naa-naa from the infamous “come with me” pocket, straight through the big sticks. Harry Cook was a night-owl down back, patrolling and surveying the area, with fellow defender Pat Hatch igniting in the 3rd term. Ryan Missy Higgins got himself a 5-star hospitality rating for serving Sherrins on a silver platter all day at stoppages. It was a great day for the twos, and it looks like it’s going to be a great season. The senior side got the monkey off their back, getting their first win of the season in what was wet and slippery day. Jayden Murphy came up against his old side, and was prolific whilst carrying a few niggles. The Rifle, Riley Tempany, was all guns blazing down back, and battled through a shoulder injury in which was a gutsy and courageous effort. The miraculous one, Terry, showed pace all day breaking lines, whilst Bede Briscomb provided help in the ruck, and has become a much-needed utility for the club. We look to carry on our winning form against Nunawading this week.

DONVALE: Big wins by our seniors and reserves in the wet at Nunawading last Saturday. Thanks to Nunawading for a great day. We had a number of senior players miss through injury so it was pleasing to put in a really solid performance in both matches. Our under-19s had a resounding victory at Ferntree Gully to bring themselves to 2-2 for the season so far. It’s good for this group to get on a roll in a season that has so far seen them unable to play the same opposition or at the same venue as our Seniors. At the time of writing, we don’t know the fixture for our Under 19s this week; but of course we wish them well wherever they may be! Our Seniors and Reserves travel to face ladder leaders Coldstream. Coldstream have rebuilt their list from last season and we congratulate them on the great strides they have made. We look forward to testing ourselves against such tough competition today and our aim is to bring the four points from each match back to Donvale. A reminder to our supporters to please purchase your membership as soon as you can. Memberships are available for purchase on-line at our website and can also be bought at our temporary rooms at St Davids. Please contact Club Secretary Diarmuid McAlary if you have any difficulty. Thanks again to our sponsors for coming on board again in 2017. Their support is more important than ever; especially with the first half of the season being away games. Particular thanks to our major sponsors, including Jellis Craig Manningham, Venture Egg Financial Services and Konstruct Recycling. Tickets are available now for our Gala Cocktail Ball on 24th June. It promises to be a great night. Please remember to follow us on Social media (Facebook and Instagram) to stay up to date with all the Donvale news.

DIVISION 4 KILSYTH: The under-19s boys played their best game so far, this season, unfortunately running out of legs in the last half. The boys only had 16 players, no bench and were extremely competitive in the first half. O’Rourke kicked 4, J Bentley, Newton, Anderson, Sells and J Polkinghorne all kicked 1. Best on: Newton, O’Rourke, Ivanovic, Anderson, Stevens, Scheepers.

KILSYTH Senior Coach: Paul Newlands Res Coach: Chris Rutty Ground: Pinks Reserve, Liverpool Rd, Kilsyth. (Melways 51 H8) Ph: 9728 8773 Colours: Black jumper with red sash, red shorts.

We are very proud of the boy’s efforts this weekend and hopefully with a full team, the boys can show us how good they really can be! The reserves boys had their second loss of the year, going down 83 – 39. After losing a couple of key players to injury during the game, the boys were also down on bench numbers and had to push hard all game. Donaldson was back to his goal kicking best, kicking 4, with Hincksman and first gamer for the club Gardiner, both kicking 1 each. Best on: Grylls, Molesworth, Donaldson, P Malan, Beavan and Gardiner. The seniors had their first loss of the year, going up against the also undefeated Whitehorse. The match was hard and tough, with both sides drawn going into the half time break. Unfortunately, the boys came out in the third and let Whitehorse kick 4 unanswered goals which in the end got them the win. Clarke again with a bagful, kicking 4, Mainenti, Currey, Miechel, Van Gulik, Nautili, Masters and Jacobs all with 1 each. Best on: Currey, Miechel, Noonan, G Malan, Clarke and Ross.

WE SALUTE OUR SPONSORS! Sponsorship plays a vital role in sport at all levels and without it the league would not be as successful as it is today. The income generated from sponsorship reduces the financial burden on competing clubs and keeps the cost of football in the EFL within reach of all supporters.
