BOUNDARY BANTER RB: Winter footy finally hit Melbourne last week mate. BWS: It sure did old man, you looked like you had gained 10kgs with the amount of layers you were wearing out at Knox. RB: Reminds me of seeing you in round 1 BWS, but you were Ray Baird only wearing a T-shirt! BWS: Funny guy… It was a great day though out at Knox Gardens Reserve with a close game and big crowd. RB: The atmosphere was fantastic mate, Nth Ringwood have always had a strong travelling faithful, so hats off to them. BWS: And hats off also to the Knox volunteers working in the kitchen cos those roast pork rolls after the game were magnificent! RB: Here here. Another big scalp for Doncaster on the weekend in beating Noble Park at the Bullring, they are relishing the challenges every week the Sharks. BWS: 5 wins from 8 rounds is a massive effort for the new boys of the division and they find themselves nestled nicely in the top 5 with a healthy percentage also. I believe they will play finals this year. RB: It’s a big call to make so early, but all signs point to them in doing so. BWS: Vermont gave your boys Rowville a little touch up last week in the 1 v 2 clash out at Terrara road. RB: Don’t go calling them my boys mate – I go for Donny East! BWS: You wish. But it was another great win for the Eagles, they are playing the best footy at the moment. RB: I agree with that BWS, they are really well coached and have been really consistent all season. It was great to see Adam Parker back and in the best also. BWS: Bayswater are in really good form at the moment in division 2 and now find themselves a game clear in 3rd spot. RB: My preseason tip for the flag mate so it’s
no surprise to me that they playing good footy. BWS: The Eastern Footballer said you picked Doncaster East… Having a bit each way are you?! RB: I know who I tipped and I reckon I know who changed it also!

BWS: Don’t look at me old man. The Waverley Blues have had a couple of losses in recent weeks, is this a worrying sign? RB: They have had some big outs in those games due to injury, the biggest being Matt Sharpe and Carboni also. Still on 4 wins and right in the mix with plenty of time to their full list back on the park. BWS: Silvan won their first two games and have now dropped 7 on the trot. I’ve picked them nearly every week and am finally jumping off til I see a return to form. RB: They have been disappointing. On the flip side they only went down narrowly to a Park Orchards side whose last month has been very encouraging so maybe there is still hope at the Cattery. BWS: Another tight win for Upper sees them remain unbeaten at the top of the table. RB: There must be something in the water up in the Dandenong’s with both Upper and Ferntree Gully both undefeated! But getting back to the Kings they know how to get the job done don’t they mate. The Basin were on top for the first half but the Kings came back holding them scoreless for the whole second half – you don’t see that very often. BWS: No you don’t. Given the final margin was only 4 points it’s safe to say the Bears will be spewing and that was the one that got away. RB: Surrey Park sit on 5 wins and just outside the 4 at the halfway mark, what a fantastic effort that is by the Panthers.

BOUNDARY BANTER BWS: It would be one of the stories of the year if they can play finals, make no doubt about that. RB: Kilsyth are the team keeping them out at the moment, with their recent form very encouraging. BWS: They head into the break as one of the inform teams, and if they can have a run home like they did last year we will be talking a lot about them in the weeks ahead. RB: It’s about time the league finally listed to my rants about playing more footy on the Queen’s birthday weekend as we have 11 great games as you go local for your footy today. BWS: Yep I’m sure it was all your doing Raymond… RB: You’re welcome. BWS: Give me strength! It is a good call to have more matches played though with divisions 1 and 2 doing battle while 3 and 4 have a rest. As always starting with the premier division who do you like this afternoon? RB: Balwyn v Noble is the traditional Queen’s birthday game and will be our match of the day on 98.1FM. For 5 years it has been the away side that takes home the points but it won’t happen today with the Tigers playing the better footy. Knox and Norwood is an interesting one, with both teams struggling in the first half of the season but I’ll go with Norwood to make it two in a row. Montrose v East Ringwood will be very

The Eastern Footballer
close but like the Dees only because of the home ground advantage. Rowville will bounce back against the Doggies as will Blackburn over Saints. Vermont and Doncaster should be a cracker. I know you love the sharks BWS but you couldn’t tip against the ladder leaders in this one. In saying that, if Doncaster win I’m officially on the bandwagon! BWS: Not sure you will be welcome mate! Amazingly we have tipped identically this week, wonders will never cease! RB: I’m sure division 2 will tell a different tale, who do you like? BWS: Wantirna Sth and Croydon looks to be the closest contest today. A few weeks back you would pencil in the Devils but times have changed with Blues getting a few wins on the board. Home ground advantage tips the Devils over the line for me. Bayswater will be too good for the Falcons at the LSO, Mooroolbark as always, Mulgrave just over Mitcham and Doncaster East against arch rival Waverley Blues away from home. RB: I don’t believe it mate we have done it again in division 2 – agree with the lot! BWS: Then I bet you change your mind on radio just so you can have a little each way… RB: Pot – Kettle – Black BWS: Nah I’ll take mine white with 2 sugars mate! See you at the footy!

STATS BENCH Noble Park started the season well with three wins. They have had just one win in the next five games and after the loss to Doncaster have dropped out of the top five for the first time this season. And it doesn’t get any easier with fixtures against the Noel McPhee top three teams in the next @statsbench three weeks and return bouts with Balwyn and Vermont towards the end of the season. It’s not LCS* but close to SLCS** if such a thing exists. It’s been 24 years since Doncaster ventured to Terrara Road, Vermont. It’s been 39 years since the Sharks had a win over the Eagles. The task hasn’t got any easier to win at Vermont over the years but the Sharks have not lost any admirers in their return to the top division. Speaking of difficult tasks, East Burwood will have to cobble together at least three wins in the last 10 matches to avoid the wooden spoon. The Rams’ last three wins have come over the last 43 matches. Mooroolbark will be in no sentimental mood as the Barkers are seeking a divisional change in the opposite direction. Such is the closeness of the middle of the Division 2 ladder that a Mulgrave win over Mitcham in their first meeting since 2007 could see the Lions jump from ninth to fifth if other results go their way. Both clubs have been up and down with a good win followed by a heavy defeat characterising their seasons to date. Division 2 Round 9 Lilydale Mooroolbark Mulgrave Wantirna South Waverley Blues

Walker Park Fights for Fee By David McPherson - EFL Media Not many Under 10 footballers can say that they’ve captained their club at senior level, nor can they say that they are as deserving of the honour as Lachlan Gilchrist. The Gilchrist family has been hit hard by misfortune in recent times, and the lengths to which the Mitcham Football Club has gone to support Lachlan and his family is a case-study in the strength of the footballing community. Lachlan’s mother Fiona Gilchrist possesses all of that strength, with her presence at Walker Park last Saturday a testament to her grit and determination. Just over two months ago Fiona was in the intensive care unit at St Vincent’s Hospital, just days after being air-evacuated from the Malaysian archipelago of Langwaki aboard an emergency Lear jet. Fiona, her husband Jamie and sons Lachlan and Mitch, were only four days into their Malaysian holiday when Fiona became unwell, suffering severe abdominal pain and nausea.
had become a nurse to pay back the treatment she received. After spending three days in the primitive Langwaki hospital where temperatures reached as high as 40 degrees, Fiona’s condition deteriorated to the point where husband Jamie employed Jetcity Rescue to fly her home. It was a life-saving decision, as when undergoing surgery in Melbourne it was found that a tumour had eroded and perforated the surface of her bowel. The surgery meant that a wave of toxic bacteria was released into Fiona’s bloodstream and she was placed into intensive care in a medically-induced coma with a ventilator to support her breathing. After a two-day stay in ICU, Fiona endured another four weeks in hospital, before being discharged on May 2 and returning home where she is now receiving treatment through the hospital in the home program.
The holiday had been planned as a much needed getaway for the family, as Fiona had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as Leiomyosarcoma.
Despite making a life-saving call, Jamie was left to foot the bill of Fiona’s emergency flight as travel insurance wouldn’t cover the expenses due to the root cause of the illness being a pre-existing condition.
Fiona had already beaten cancer as a teenager after intensive radiation, chemotherapy and surgery and
It was at this point when Fiona’s friends stepped in and created a crowd-funding page with the hope of

raising money to offset the exorbitant flight costs. “I actually almost thought about talking them out of it because they had worked so hard and I felt that they were going to be a bit disappointed because I wasn’t expecting it to take off,” husband Jamie said. Jamie’s concerns were short-lived however, with the initial goal of 20,000 dollars being reached in less than 48 hours. The Fight for Fee campaign has now raised over 55,000 dollars, with the total still increasing. When Mitcham learned of the family’s hardships they knew they also had a part to play, and set about putting a smile of the face of young Lachie. “It started off the Saturday the week before last when he [Lachlan] went down to watch Mitcham take on East Burwood,” father Jamie said. Playing-senior coach Neil Winterton and club captain Julz Petracca asked Lachlan to give them some assistance in leading the team out onto the ground, before inviting him down to training the following Thursday. “He went to training with them and they named him on the bench and as co-captain during the team announcement which he got a great thrill out of,” Jamie said. “He got in full kit on Saturday and went through all the team meetings on the day and did the full warm-up with the team. We were amazed how comfortable he was with all the big boys - I think he said to a couple of people that he thinks he should be hanging out with footballers.” There was more in store for the keen young footballer, who then led the team through a banner made specifically for the occasion. “He ran on through the banner which was a huge thrill for him and also for my wife Fee to see that. She www.efl.org.au
watched him warm up and run through the banner and it all happened right in front of her,” Jamie said. “He was chuffed he won the coin toss so he got to do the hand point and then he sat on the bench as well.” Jamie – who is also the team manager for his son’s under 10 team – spoke at length about the character of Mitcham’s playing list. “The senior players were magic, I was expecting that Lachie would be sitting with me and might get a quick hello or something but as soon as we got there they took him off my hands. They’re an outstanding bunch of men,” he said. “They really made him one of their own, even at the end of the game after they had lost and were walking off the ground, all they were saying was ‘great game Lachie’.” “In the rooms after the game they were having photos with him and even gave him the match-day footy as well for him to take home, so I couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of blokes.” The experience lit a fire in Lachie, who spent the next morning showing his mates everything he had learnt. “He took it all on board and the next day at under 10s he was trying to get those extra stretches and warm-up drills going,” Jamie said. There’s no doubt that Lachlan Gilchrist loves football and the Mitcham community loves him, so maybe one day in the future he’ll pull on the yellow and black and lead the Tigers out as captain for real. (Note: Donations can be made at the Fight for Fee Facebook page, while tickets can also be bought for the upcoming trivia night on Sunday 19 June at the Newport, Junction Beer Hall & Wine Room. All of the proceeds will go directly to the Fight for Fee fund.) 9
The Whistleblowers By Scott Van Noordennen – EFL Head of Umpiring PLAYER TO PATHWAY PROGRAM This round will see a past AFL player practicing his craft in an EFL reserves game at Balwyn. David Rodan is a retired professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Richmond, Port Adelaide and Melbourne Football Clubs. Rodan is now a part of the player to pathway program as a goal umpire. As part of his development he umpires games in metro competitions as well as being coached at the AFL Umpires headquarters at Ikon park, Carlton.
Ex-players who may have been retired or who have just hung the boots form a strong part in our umpiring community. These past players have realised that they can still be involved with the game and participate in a sport that they still enjoy. WANT TO BECOME AN UMPIRE? Anyone interested in becoming an umpire in 2016 (former players, beginners, athletes) contact EFL Head of Umpiring, Scott Van Noordennen at EFL House on 9762 5766 or email svannoordennen@ efl.org.au.

Zebs are up and about By Davis Harrigan - EFL Media
Consistency is the norm at Forest Hill, and the Zebras continue to keep the top of Division Three on their toes thanks to quick play and a strong team. Sitting in the top four since the season started, the girls in green have given the top of the competition, the Waverley Blues, a real scare after a 36-26 win against the previously undefeated ladder leaders. After conceding a 2 goal deficit at the quarter time break, the defensive work and sharp passing through the centre changed the dynamic of the game, with a 15-goal second period assisting the Zebras as they closed in on victory. Skipper Katherine Green said the team had started to gel since forming before the season started, allowing greater communication and better performance on court. “From the beginning of the season to now, we’re becoming more consistent in how we play with each other, learning where we’re going, finding out who can shoot well and play in defence,” she said. “It’s about getting to know the way that we’re playing and finding the right fit for each other… it definitely does come to playing together constantly.” Defence was the order of the night, with Forest Hill using a fill-in and looking to bolster their backline to stop the Blues attacks. “We were in the zone, so we needed to make sure we were strong in defence, and when we were down at quarter time our aim was to stand our ground and try and get as many intercepts as possible (after the break),” Green said. “In the centre we were wanting short, sharp passes moving towards the ball and moving it fast, but not at a speed where we couldn’t cope, pushing it towards goal where we were trying to put everything we could. “From half time until the final siren we were just trying to play our game.” Green said she and the rest of the team knew the Blues were not going to give up anything without a fight, but went into the game knowing the results had largely gone the way of the Zebras in recent performances. “Waverley’s definitely a strong competition for us, but we went in knowing we had to play our best… we had a good headspace knowing we were in for a chance and had been playing quite well,” she said. www.efl.org.au
“We were making sure that we were running forward with consistent passing, that we got good open shots in and getting our rebounds…at the same time in defence the Blues were brilliant shooters and we tried to block them out and eliminate their shots. “I think the game was quite tight up until the last quarter, but we tried to not let them get to us and knew we were still in it until the final siren.” Forest Hill went in only knowing the Blues were in top spot – there was no prior knowledge of their opponents’ style of game, but it didn’t faze anyone, Green said. “We knew they hadn’t lost a game but didn’t have a heads up on how they played,” she said. Green said the skill displayed by the Zebras to turn the game in their favour was a great confidence booster for the team. “It is terrific knowing we do have the ability to come back and hold it together for that win,” she said. “In our team we’ve got Alex Grant, who is an extremely strong shooter and can play in defence who takes on a leadership role around the goals and taking control, she has drive to her and is a brilliant netballer.” What’s brought the side together is a strong sense of community, not just on court but through the club as well – an element that starts with the captain. “I’m taking on the responsibility as skipper and re-inforcing that we play our game…we all know our roles, and it’s also about making sure we have eight players so we have a consistent rotation,” Green said. The “main” thing is to have fun on court while being competitive, while creating a support circle at the Zebras. “Everyone in the team comes together and supports the football club as well, the girlfriends of the footballers are getting involved which is really nice to see, we’ve had some of the boys come down to support us, so it’s bringing the community together,” Green said. “They all get around everybody, and those who don’t come to watch us play still ask us every Saturday how we went.” 13

BALWYN: Round 9 already and the season is at the half way mark. We turn into the run home with our senior team 2nd on the ladder, having lost only once (by a point), and drawn with Vermont who are currently on top and who interestingly play a very competitive Doncaster side this afternoon. A result we will watch with interest! Our Twos are showing some better signs in the last couple of weeks after going down in a few heartbreaking losses by less than a kick. A strong run home will see us right up in contention for finals. Welcome to our guests Noble Park today as we continue with our now traditional Queens Birthday clash – the 6th time we have clashed on this weekend. Amazingly to date in all of these matches, the Away team has taken the 4 points – time to turn those tables today! Only 5 weeks until 16 July and our Centenary Gala Dinner in the Palladium Room at Crown. We are in the final stages of collecting bookings, guest names and payments, so please contact Football Manager, Jo Tregear asap 0412 172 183 / balwyn@efl.org. au . The night will include acknowledgement and presentation of All Premiership Teams, Teams of the Decade, the announcement of the Team of the Century and induction of Legends of the Club. There’ll also be a six-piece band, dancing and an exclusive three-course meal, fine wines, choice of beers and soft drinks. Table of 10 $2,000, individual tickets $225, all-inclusive. All welcome! GALA DAY – NEW DATE – Sunday 10 July from 1pm at the Social Club. Tickets from Prez Richard Wilson on 0407 949 178 or richard@ allbanx.com.au

NOBLE PARK: It felt like de-ja-vu last weekend, it was raining; it was cold, the U19s winning, the reserves winning and the seniors unfortunately not getting the four points on the board. Today will be another tough battle as we are at Balwyn. It’s always a tough day but as our theme song says ‘Come on Noble Show Them How...” As we approach midyear the club would like to thank those supporters who week after week put their hand up to help the club, of course we would like others to help. So to you all “ ask not what the club can do for you; but what can you do for the club.” Talking of the weather were you cold and required a wet weather jacket on Saturday, well the Bulls jackets are on sale now - $60 is all it will cost you to show your support at matches and keep warm and dry - Jackets from Club Noble reception or see Tracey. Saturday July 2nd come along to the “Bulls Cocktail Night” at Oakie Dokie in Bayside - all supporters, sponsors, players, coaches, officials are welcome. Tickets are $100 p/p includes food, beer, wine, champagne, cider, cocktails and soft drink – please book with Tracey. DIVISION 1 KNOX: The U19s had a terrific win last week against North Ringwood – Santamaria played an amazing game kicking 3 goals, with Curtiss, T.Grimston and Fisher also amongst the top goal kickers. Curtiss, Stein, Anson, Santamaria, McGowan and Munnery played great games. The Reserves followed up with another great win whilst welcoming back Kenny, after a string of injuries, and Rizza, after an ACL and a battle with testicular cancer. With Rizza kicking 4 goals - it was great to see he hasn’t lost his touch! Other standouts were Chesson, Tsirtsikos, J.McCarthy, Donald and Canning. The players have spent last week and this week raising funds for Men’s Cancers, please support this worthy cause by making a gold coin donation at the bar, to help raise awareness and find a cure. Another disappointing loss to the Senior team with the one highlight being Reyne Harris awarded Chiropedic Bedding Goal of the Day – Congrats Reyne! Best players were Stanic, S. McCarthy, Hanegraaf, Wooffindin, S. Davis and Williams. We have the annual Scoreboard luncheon coming up at the club on the 25th of June with a two-course lunch being provided and special guest speaker Olympian, Craig Mottram. The lunch is sure to make the home game against Balwyn a treat, for ticket inquiries contact Joe Barbanti on 9720 6923 or info@martysautorepairs.com.au. This week we welcome Norwood to the fort, good luck to all teams. GO FALCONS!

DIVISION 1 NORWOOD: Norwood hosted Montrose in a must win rd 8 game at Mullum Reserve, looking for their 2nd win of the season. We welcomed back star forward Leigh Williams skipper John Holmes and also Ruckman/ forward Darin Stewart to bolster the line-up. We led at 1/4T and half-time,but there was never much in it despite us seeming to have the majority of the play. By 3/4T our lead was 7 points, 6.10 to 6.3, some more accurate kicking might have had us breathing more easily. In an exciting last quarter we led by 2 points with 5 minutes remaining, Stewart in the goal square appeared set to dribble through the sealer, only for the kick to hit the goal umpire as he straddled the goal line. The ball stopped dead and was rushed through for a point. With hearts in mouths we saw Pat Weardon miss narrowly with a snap which would also have sealed it. Montrose had one last surge forward, but a timely mark from Michael Pearson at half-back stemmed the attack, and 30 seconds later the siren sounded to the relief of all Norwood fans. We had saluted for our 2nd win, 7.13.55 - 8.3.51. Again we were led from the front by the remarkably consistent Stuey Hilly and Holmer, while Matt Jessop, Blake Charles Michael Pearson Justin Clarke and Michael Wright all turned in ripping games. Leroy with 3 goals was not outstanding, but his presence straightens us up and gives us a much needed target forward. The win pushes us up to 9th on the ladder, a game and percentage from the bottom placed Knox who we meet this week at Knox Reserve in another ‘must win’ game. A win in this game can see us turn our sights upwards toward the top 5 on the leader rather than looking down towards the bottom. In other games the development squad have moved to into 5th spot in place of Montrose after defeating them, while the U19s hold down 4th spot with a 5-2 record after their win. Most pleasingly, the club has recorded its first “Wooders Day” for the year with all teams saluting. Lets hope there’s another one next week. DIVISION 1 MONTROSE: Last week it was off to tackle Norwood and we did not get the results we were hoping for. The U19’s were competitive till half time, but could not sustain the effort and fell short by 5 x goals. Best – Whitchell, Perry Van Rossen & King. The reserves let the opposition get away to a four goal lead at the first break and this proved costly as we outscored them for the remainder of the game, eventually going down by 19 x points. Best – Ekers, Gibb, McArdle & Welsh. The senior’s game was a tight affair all day. At half time we were only four points behind; But with a depleted bench it was always going to be difficult. We tried hard to bridge the gap, but eventually fell short by 4 x points. Best – Vescio, Hore, Goodman & Bell. Let’s make sure we get right behind all 3 x teams today and bring home the wins. Next Friday at the rooms we have our “Parma & Pot” night while watching the Hawks Vs. Roos on the big screen. And on Sat June 25th, we will be holding our always fun iPod night. The very popular Crime Night is back on Sat 30th July featuring Det. Sgt. Ron Iddles and selected guests. Tickets are $80 per head including finger food, beer & wine. Tickets sell fast, so call Matt Jones on 0409.931.018 to secure your spot at this informative night. DIVISION 1 EAST RINGWOOD: Our day at a damp Morton Park proved to be very disappointing as we came away with no success in any of our 3 matches. The Colts continue to battle against experience and size yet also continue to work hard and learn. The Development Squad were competitive but once again found scoring difficult before going Down by 50 points. James Symes again flew the flag in a solid display. The Seniors were jumped by a more direct Blackburn outfit and despite a few good patches of play, failed to adapt to the greasy conditions. We controlled the last term but couldn’t convert when required. Andrew McGuinness was outstanding for us and earned himself the Warren Gilbert Pewter. We need to get back on the bike today at Montrose and show that we are developing as a football club. Please note that today’s aftermatch will be held at the Ainslie Park Clubrooms where beef rolls will be available for purchase for all in attendance. A members’ draw will also take place with a handy cash prize to be won. Action commences at 5:30pm with awards at 6:30pm. keep these dates in your diary: June 18: Our next home game against Knox with the Life Members Lunch and Past Players Reunion. All welcome. July 23: Gala Ball at Linley Estate. This will be a great night and bookings are coming in rapidly. Call Julie (0412 745 446) or Bec (0413 613 220) to ensure you don’t miss out! DIVISION 1 NORTH RINGWOOD: What a well-deserved and great win on a miserable & damp day last Saturday. Great to get off the bottom of the Ladder, and I’m sure there’s more wins for us to come soon. The first half was tough as both sides needed to get the elusive win. We seemed to be playing better than Knox, but wasted too many opportunities. We kicked 5 goals to one in the third quarter to gain the upper hand. Jacko and Matt Scott were fantastic, playing up to their capabilities and producing possibly their best games for the year. Young Under 19s player Jake Cullen kicked his first senior goal with a resounding applause from the large Saints crowd. Michael Locco played forward for a lot of the game, and maybe we’ve found another key target. Tim Jones took all before him at halfback, continually pushing us forward. Well done to all the players on what was very much an allteam performance. The match was broadcast on EFL live and the broadcast team – thanks guys - seemed to enjoy our rendition of the Saints song after the game, and yes, we all sang the song with plenty of gusto. Under 19s and Reserves are still short of numbers and the match results reflected this. The Vets played South Croydon on Sunday and took the chocolates in a very competitive game. DIVISION 1 BLACKBURN: Despite the Blackburn Pioneers Development U19 team not getting up last week, the Club celebrated 3 solid wins at home against East Ringwood. The seniors had to battle hard for the first half on a typical winter’s afternoon, but managed to wrestle the ascendency by kicking 7 goals to 1 to win by 33pts. Dolan, McFarlane and N. Hammond were better players and it was good to see some young talent come into the team in Patto and Chan Le playing his first game in the ones. 8 separate goal kickers was a pleasing output as the boys got back to playing some consistent team footy that gets us to a healthy 5 win 3 loss position to set up some challenging rounds to come. The Development Team never let their opposition into the game winning by 50pts, but still managed inaccuracy in front of the big sticks. Overall it was a positive performance that saw the Capt. Swooper back up his recent good form with a BOG performance. The lads are pushing hard each week with many players putting up their hand for a senior call up which is a good position for the Club. The Colts demonstrated an even 4Qtr effort and despite some absences, were able to outplay their opposition with some excellent team footy which would have made their coaches satisfied. Liam Smith, Saccutelli, Merrett and Cooper Winter shared 17 goals between them and Ty Aitkin continued his recent good form. This week we travel to Nth Ringwood who will be fired up after a good win over Knox. All teams will be ready for a good contest at Quambee Reserve. DIVISION 1 VERMONT: We got off to a great start in first quarter against Rowville and managed to keep control all day in slippery conditions. Unfortunately, we copped another bad injury, this time to Kyle Emley a player who has been having an excellent season. The better players last week were Lachlan Carey, Tom Schneider, Tim Johnson, Liam Buxton, Adam Parker, Jake Best, Andrew Pretto & Wade McConnon. The Reserves made life difficult with their inaccuracy, but still got home in the end. The better players were Daniel Reid, Ned Coghlan, Andy Ellis, Cal McConnon, Nick Mendes and Jaydon Stiles. The Under 19’s were very good in first half which set up a convincing victory. The better players were Ryan Young, Cal Mendes, Joel Bleize, Lachie Gould, Bailey Freeman & Jack Furey. The Forest Hill Eagles were terrific and had their fourth win in succession. The better players were Matt Sevior, Lachie Pickering, Lachlan Vaughan, Fraser Kenny, Ned Snibson & Brennan McCafferty. SOCIAl:- Today we have the Past Players & Officials Reunion Day and we welcome them all. Our history is sensational and we are sure you will exaggerate it to the maximum today. The big date to put in your diary is the Annual Sports Night on Wed. 6th July featuring Brendan Favola. Liam Shiels and Des Dowling.

DIVISION 1 DONCASTER: 1 out of 3 last week against Noble Park, which was our first visit ever and what a venue! almost got too comfortable. Colts were in a low scoring but entertaining game against a fellow top 5 contender, the game went down to the wire with a kick after the siren not making the distance (though the tactics by the man(s) on the mark were extraordinary!!) and we went down by 3 points. Good effort in a tough game against a good side. Best – Giles, Kadlecik, McNamara, Silipo, Trikolas & Every. Reserves continue to be thereabouts but just can’t finish games off and failed again against the Bulls by 3 goals. Still very competitive with limited resources, stick at it. Best – Fares, Nolch, Tripodi, Goodwin, Hodges & Morando. Seniors got away to a good start but were eventually reeled in by the Bulls in the last which was a see saw of lead changes before we held out in the final 10 minutes of a great slog between the 2 sides to record a 3 point win – someone book the cardiac unit for all our games please! Best – Ryan, Komen, Marganis, Annakis, Jarvis & Cooper. Today we travel to Vermont then return home next week against Sth Croydon. Coterie memberships are still available. LILYDALE: We welcome Bayswater Football Club
to the Lilydale Sports Oval today. Our U 19’s have a bye this week and next week will be playing their game against Wantirna Sth with our other teams at East Burwood and not at Lilydale, as in fixture. Thank you to all of those who purchased a ticket in our fundraiser for Dave Arthur, who is slowly on the mend and still in hospital. We know that Deidre and family have been appreciative of the support from both the Junior and Senior club. We hope to see you up and about soon Dave! Thank you to all the Junior club players and family members who braved the nasty weather to come to Junior round. We hope you enjoyed the experience and we appreciate your support. Tickets for the Players and Supporters Ball at Richmond Football Club, are now available. This should be a great night with Glen Manton being our MC for the night and The Flaming Moes providing the music. Don’t forget the early bird special if you buy before June 23rd! Why don’t you organise a table, just let Erica Mc Menamin know. Two other important dates to put in the diary are July 30th – Casino Night and August 13th Past Players and Officials lunch with former AFL player Mark Eustice as our guest speaker. The club wants to wish Josh Hill a speedy recovery after breaking his jaw last week. He has had an operation and will hopefully up and about soon. Best wishes to Ian Pollock and Merle Brown who have both been hospitalised lately. Keep up to date with everythingthrough our webpage, team app, facebook and twitter. Strength in Unity.

DIVISION 2 BAYSWATER: In probably the worst conditions for some years, we took on fellow top four teams Wantirna Sth at Appleby Oval last week. In the reserves we were up against the undefeated Devils and a dour struggle ensued all day. We held the ascendancy throughout and managed to extend all the quarter margins to finally come out 34 point winners. It was brilliant to see Handles kick the first goal and the players showed enormous support for him after a very trying week. He finished with two goals along with Gordo. In a great team performance that now puts us on top of the table, Zac Leacy, Trent Vanvugt , Dave Eddy, in his first game for the Club, Thommo and Al White stood out all day. With the steady rain still falling, the seniors jumped out well and led by 9 points at the first change. A five goal to two second term extended the lead out to 24 points and with scoring difficult was a fairly good lead. Wanny South reduced the margin by four points in the third and came hard at us in the last, keeping us goal less while adding two themselves but just failing to bridge the gap. In such a tough game, we were happy to take the four points with the margin 10 at the end. Joel led from the front in conditions that suited the smaller players better with Rooey, Musa, Searly and Scott McInerney consistent on a trying day. Keep next Saturday, Round 10 open for the Past Players Day. 18th June. Book your table now with Darren Lynch 0419 945 244 or Ray Kazar 0406 996 138. Go Baysie.

DIVISION 2 MOOROOLBARK: Congratulations to Tim Plant on his 150th game for the Mustangs last week and also to Matt Ford who chalked up his 100th. The day didn’t start as planned with the Colts going down by 49 points to Sth Wantirna at Bayswater. Billy Gysberts top scored with 2 goals and best players were Delahoy, Haskell, Daniell, Harper & McGee. It was then over to Mitcham where the Reserves took on the Tigers. We got the jump on them in the first half and had a commanding lead at the major break and although we let them back into it in the second half we still managed a solid 15 point win. Goals were shared around while Russ McCrimmon was voted BOG. With persistent drizzle all day it wasn’t ideal conditions for big men but that didn’t stop Chargey from marking strongly and booting 4 goals. Sticks Stephens also played a great game, dominating the ruck and doing plenty around the ground. Smithy once again got the nod as BOG with Bonuda, Bishop, Slattery and Hammen giving good support. A 6 goal to 1 last term saw us draw away for a convincing 53 point win. Today we host East Burwood at the Heights to finish off the first half of the season and I think our boys have exceeded expectations at this stage of proceedings, sitting on top of the ladder with only one narrow defeat. We must now maintain the momentum in the second half of the season and hopefully into a finals campaign. Major Raffle tickets are still available so see Steve Noonan to be part of it. We also have the Comedy Night next Friday so see Marci to book your tickets. GO MUSTANGS !!!

DIVISION 2 EAST BURWOOD: The Rams travelled to a very cold and damp Croydon last weekend and left the day with little to be enthused about. The club has come a long way in restructuring its operations and rebuilding its financial stability in 2016 and looking into the junior side of the club the future looks very promising. However we must also face the reality that with our current playing list we are going to struggle to be competitive in Division 2. Our focus therefore will be to ensure we can field an Under 19’s side in 2017 from our own junior players and retain the quality under 17’s and under 15’s we have at the moment. It will not be a rapid process, however many clubs within the EFL have demonstrated it can be done. Other than our presentation Nights, there is one main social function to be held this year. Both the senior and juniors are combining their efforts to run an auction Night on Saturday July 16th at Rams Stadium. To all supporters of the club please contribute in whatever many you can to ensure we can resource the club going forward.

DIVISION 2 MULGRAVE: This week we welcome Mitcham to Mulgrave Reserve in what will be challenging games across all grades. Last week the seniors put together 100 minutes of great football and ran out 49 point winners under wet and slippery conditions. Best players were Sean Lester, Nathan Grylls and Dean Siakoulis. The reserves battled hard all day to go down in the end by 35points, best were Pat McKaige, Nathan Prior and Tim Rowe. After leading at three quarter time the under 19s drew with Waverley Blues, poor kicking being the determining factor. Best players were Brayden James, James Verde and Baxter Leece. In division 1 netball our yellow team won by a 5 goals over Norwood Black and are sitting second on the ladder with 6 wins, in division 5, our red team went down to Norwood White and, they are currently sitting fourth on the ladder, go girls This week we held our Lion Pride and Sponsor Lunch, with Stan Alves as our guest. Stan was at his normal best, we had great food prepared by Rod, Sam and Geraldine, and a great day was had by all. The annual $5k draw is set for June 18th, get your tickets for a great night at the club and the Cocktail Night (replacing the Gala Night) is being held on July 30th at the Wheelers Hill Hotel. Club membership numbers are up on last year already, but we have room for lots more. Take up a Lion Pride or Standard membership and support your club. See Sonia and sign up. When buying goods or services, consult out sponsor list for great value and tell them you are a Mully member. Support our sponsors and they will continue to support us

DIVISION 2 MITCHAM: Great to return home last week even if the under 19s had another bye as we welcomed the Mooroolbark footy club to the MCG of the East. The reserves rued the early goals they conceded and went down by a couple As for the Seniors they hung tough for 3 quarters before being run over by one of the teams to beat this year. Sometimes it’s not whether we win or loose but can we make a difference..... Last WEEK the Mitcham Football Club stood tall and brought some joy to a young man and the Entire Gilchrist family WELL DONE to Matt McCubbin, Neil Winterton, Julz Petracca and all the Mitcham Football Club Players, the Mooroolbark footy club and the EFL umpires for the respect shown THANK YOU # fightforfee # wearefamily While the footy Saturday arvo wasn’t to our liking, Saturday night certainty was, with over 300 people in attendance as the club hosted the annual comedy night in conjunction with the juniors. Well done to all involved - the room looked magnificent and the entertainment a real hoot. Today we travel down the road to Mulgrave and it will be great to have all 3 teams together again as we battle to make sure we continue to be in the mix in second division. Keep an eye out for the upcoming events including the sponsors lunch, Gala Cocktail night, ladies lunch and reverse draw. You can keep up to date with all the news, views and reviews via the official Mitcham football Club site @www.mitchamfc. sportingpulse.net Good Luck to all teams today and enjoy your footy #strongandbold

Love footy? So do we! Wantirna South FC is run and led by people who love football and who enjoy helping the teams be the best they can be. Ever thought about getting involved in running the club? Happy to do something, but can’t commit the time to be at the club every week? We do want to hear from you. We have many roles and tasks that need doing, but simply need more help to get them done. Maybe you are happy to help out once here and there in the canteen or on the barby at home games. Maybe you are a wizard at making posters. Maybe preparing the ground and the facility for home games interests you. There are plenty of things to do. Whatever help you can offer, we are most grateful to have you join in, and so are the players. Being part of the club in any way is an enjoyable time, and that includes barracking on Saturdays! email: wantirnasouthfootballclub@gmail.com to find out more or speak anytime with Steve Draper - President.

DIVISION 2 CROYDON: Today we travel to Wantirna South. Last week the seniors defeated East Burwood in wet conditions by 59 points. Well done to the under 19’s players who played in this game and they all played well, Ollie Adams, Aiden Thompson, Adrian Ficorilli, Jayden Schille and Harry Stevens, the latter four making their debut in this game. Justin Ficorilli kicked four goals, the best being Daniel Lemon, Alex Bull and Jimmy Grant .The reserves team won by 18 points. Tommy Gillingham kicked three goals and Matty Lyall two goals. Best were Fraser Smith, Jordan Begg and Shaun Wilson. The under 19’s team who only had 16 players lost to Lilydale. The Club wishes all the best to Luke Styles for a quick recovery after he was concussed during the game. Thanks to Debbie Grant and the ladies for all their good work in organizing such a successful ladies lunch. Comedian Lawrence Mooney certainly kept the ladies entertained and thanks to Hillards for providing a delicious lunch. The Annual Ball will be held at the Carlton Brewhouse in Abbotsford tonight but the social rooms will be open for a short time for anyone who would like a drink. The major raffle tickets are out now. Please see Simon Fielding for tickets. The draw will be held on 6 August. The annual Club Auction will be held on 23 July. Any donation of goods or any help would be appreciated. GO BLUES!!!

DIVISION 2 WAVERLEY BLUES: The sky was grey and drizzling rain like a Masterchef contestant drizzles olive oil on a pre-heated saucepan. Except this was a Saturday afternoon in Mulgrave and the only heating was in the social rooms. Outside there was a chill in the air which had a bite more vicious than Matt Preston tucking into a fried dim-sim once the cameras have switched off. Winter was only a couple of days old but our senior side embraced it like they would embrace the metaphorical motherin-law of an ex-wife. We were totally out-played by Mulgrave in muddy conditions and didn’t look at all comfortable in the going until the game was all over. Best players Molloy, Millier and Twycross tried hard all day. Hopefully some of intent from the last quarter carries into this week as we welcome Doncaster East players and supporters to Mount Waverley Reserve. We also welcome Luke Hodge to the club as an invited guest to speak at our luncheon. It will be a rare opportunity for me to talk with someone else that wins lots of premierships and I can ask him if his Norm Smith is as special as my Division 4 Norm Smith equivalent, the Frank Bibby. Ideally all of our supporters enjoy a delightful and entertaining lunch then step outside and watch the lads play some of the great footy we’ve played at times this season. Last week the reserves got the job done with a solid 35 point win. In the best were Robbo, Egan and Hawkins. President Turtle showed his versatility, donning the white coat and waving the goal umpires flags. The under 19s got their first premiership points for the year but they had to share them with Mulgrave with a nail-biting draw. Best players were Young, Sam Le Cerf and Leydon. Tonight after the game is our annual Trivia Night which is always a tremendous night. Starting time is 7:30pm and the competition will be fierce. Hopefully Captain Morgan doesn’t dominate like he did last year. Go Blues!

DIVISION 2 DONCASTER EAST: We last made the trip to Lilydale Sports Oval in Round 18, 2011, where we were expected to be thrashed by the Top team after having a poor previous four weeks which put us out of finals contention. We did give them a bit of a scare for 3 quarters and had our chances to beat the eventual 2011 Premiers, but we lost the game by 2 goals. Last Saturday, we were coming off a 4 win streak and confident that we could turn the 2011 tables in similar weather conditions (cold, wet & miserable!) The 29 point victory won’t go down as one of our best, but Daniel “Bruce Doull” Coghill, Jack Martin and Jason Tendler repelled just about everything that came their way, making sure that a Donny East loss just wasn’t gonna happen. Today we meet our nemesis, Waverley Blues at their home; no matter where each team is on the ladder, you can bank on it being a close encounter (over 2 games last year the difference was 1pt!) Similar to last year, a win today will consolidate 2nd spot (7 and 2) as we round the bend for the 9 game run home. When it comes to BIG functions – nobody does it better than Donny East - and have we got some ripper events lined up in the next few weeks. Our annual “Monster raffle” is happening on sunday July 3 with $7,000 in prize money up for grabs – It’s always a fun day, so see Dave Sowersby for your ‘lucky’ numbers! Comedy comes to the Den on saturday July 16, after the Mitcham away game. (Details on our website www.defc.com.au) – I’m filling in for Joshua just for a couple of weeks, so I couldn’t resist finishing with . . “Our supporters roar every time that we score . . . . . We’re the Boys from Donny East” - Colonel

EASTERN RANGES By Daniel Joyce – Eastern Ranges
Dragons dispose of Ranges in the wet The Eastern Ranges have suffered their second straight loss, going down to the Sandringham Dragons by 43 points last Saturday. Incredibly the Ranges still find themselves in 6th position for the third straight week, still a game and percentage clear inside the top eight. The Dragons dominated from start to finish. They kicked 11 straight majors from their first 11 shots on goal, setting up what would be an insurmountable lead. Eastern was competitive in the first quarter, having more of the play, but failed to capitalise on the scoreboard kicking 2.4. While up the other end the Dragons were taking all of their opportunities as they kicked four goals straight. This trend continued into the second quarter as the Dragons kicked a further five majors to make it 11 goals from 11 shots on goal. The only behind that was registered for Sandy was rushed, while it took until the final three minutes of the half for the Ranges to register a second quarter score as Shaun Lovell kicked Eastern’s third goal. This was followed by another shortly after when Joshua Begley kicked one on the halftime siren. During the halftime break coach Darren Bewick asked his players to stem the bleeding, if they could do that they could get back into the match. They certainly came out playing a better brand of football, and were able to hold their opposition to just four second half goals, with two coming in each quarter. Unfortunately, up the other end Eastern could only manage to add five more to their total.

On a gloomy day at Box Hill, it was a gloomy result for the Ranges, who will be bitterly disappointed with the result. NEXT UP: With no match this weekend, the boys return to action in Round 10 against the Calder Cannons in two weeks’ time. This will be the second time this year the Ranges take on Calder, who currently sits at 8th on the ladder with a 3-4 win-loss record. In their Round 1 encounter, Eastern got over the line comfortably, and will be hoping they can do the same in this upcoming game. The match will be at Box Hill City Oval. EASTERN RANGES: 2.4 4.5 4.10

The aim of the award is to reward those coaches in the Eastern Region who demonstrate the quality of a good educating coach. This award is open to all levels of coaching – Senior, Youth, Junior and Auskick Each winning coach will receive a $45 interchanger app for coaches. Each winning coach will go into the ERCA coach of the year awards at the end of the season. April Auskick Craig Cavanagh – South Croydon Auskick This is Craig’s second year as coach. He stepped up last year when there the centre was lacking coaches. Craig demonstrates his passion and enjoyment for coaching auskicker’s every session. He is good with the auskicker’s and very encouraging, with one of his strengths being engaging the auskicker’s who are shy to be involved. Craig is also good at engaging the parents to become active and as a result there have been more parents jump on board as coaches and who assist the groups. Junior Jason Stone – Wantirna South Junior Football Club Jason offers a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the team. In Jason’s first year with the team he has had a focus on skill development working with each individual and giving them opportunities to develop. He has developed a great rapport with the team and always represents the team in the best manner. The team has shown great improvement under Jason’s guidance and is performing well as a result.

Youth Scott Savage – Forest Hill Junior Football Club Scott is in his second year as coach of the U17s at Forest Hill. Scott demonstrates a great passion for the game and always demonstrates excellent behaviour on game day and at training. May Auskick James Storey – Ringwood Auskick From the first session James put his hand up to help coach the Auskick clinic at Ringwood. He has committed himself to improving his own coach development by attending a level 1 coaching course. James is always changing and adapting drills and how the clinic is run to continue to improve the centre. James is definitely someone who deserves this award, he has stepped up and become one of the key volunteers driving the success of the Ringwood Auskick centre in 2016. Junior Adam Lewington – Mooroolbark Junior Football Club Adam coaches the Under 13s at Mooroolbark. Adam is fairly new to coaching and has adapted quickly to the role. One of Adams strengths as a coach is his commitment to player development. He and the coaching staff work closely with each individual to provide feedback on how they can improve. Adam is well respected by the players, parents and coaches. Adam is honest with his assessment of the team and individual while being encouraging as well. 51
ERCA Coach of the Month Youth
Senior
Sam D’Argenio – Donvale Football Club
Rick Irwin – Templestowe Football Club
Donvale U 19’s had a difficult start to the year lacking players. In Sam’s first year he has put in the hard work to attract players to the club, including many that haven’t played football before. While still being a senior player at the club, his hard work bringing players to the club and committing plenty of his time to developing them has paid off as the team is currently undefeated. This is a testament to Sam’s commitment to the team.
Rick Irwin is a highly experienced coach that has brought a wealth of football knowledge to the club. His passion for football is second to none and he demonstrates it every week on the training track and game day, providing a great environment for footballer’s development to thrive. Templestowe have experienced a great deal of success under his tenure playing finals last year and currently in the mix again only losing the one game this far in 2016.

JUNIOR CORNER By Dyson Baker – EFL Media
Australia’s newest football factory? An abundance of first round draft picks in the last five years coupled with a talented group of youngsters on their way through the ranks – it’s hard to argue that the Eastern suburbs isn’t the next frontier when it comes to football talent. Off the back of a handful of draftees last season the Eastern Football League has provided a dozen players to the Vic Metro Under 18’s squad for the National Championships this month! Eight of the 12 player hale from the Eastern Ranges, with the rest falling into the Oakleigh Chargers region. For a number of years the Geelong region and the Calder Cannons zone were both seen as “football factories” and growth areas for AFL footballers to develop. Since 2011 the Eastern Ranges have held their own. Eleven Draftees in five seasons – six of which went in the first Round, a further two who went as Number 1 picks in Tom Boyd (2013) and Jonathan Patton (2011). Fast forward to 2016 and a bumper crop of 12 players from the EFL will wear the Big V, some of whom still have another year of Under 18’s football ahead of them.

Continuing their form of breeding representative talent Knox will have three players in the Vic Metro squad; - Dylan Clarke, younger brother of North Melbourne draftee Ryan has played four games for the Ranges this season and been named in the best each time whilst still starring for his school side this season as well. - Jordan Gallucci, Set the competition on fire early in the season with a 35+ possession game early in the season, many pundits expect the Lilydale product to feature in draft contention this season. Galluci was also selected as part of the AFL Academy squad. - While still a season from being drafted Jaidyn Stephenson has made waves, as a 16-year-old kicking three goals in last year’s TAC Cup Grand Final, fast forward six months and Stephenson has bagged eight goals in four games including a stellar 4-goal haul against Gippsland earlier in the season. - Adam Cerra has been plagued by injury in season 2016, unable to play a game this season has still been selected as part of the Vic Metro squad, another bottom age player Cerra still has 12 months up his sleeve to showcase his talents.
