LEADER YOUNG GUN By: Toby Prime (Leader Newspapers)
NED Slater’s looks can be deceiving. The recruit has been among Waverley Blues’ best players every week since arriving from Essendon District club Avondale Heights. Slater is the Round 7 Division 1 and 2 nominee for the Leader Newspapers Young Gun Award. “He is just a very hard working inside midfielder, there is nothing much of him but really his size doesn’t inhibit how he attacks the contest,” Waverley Blues interim coach Scott Hunter said. “I suppose for me when I first got there, I was surprised that he plays like he does because if you looked at him you wouldn’t think that would be an asset of his. “He holds his own in the contested ball.” It has been an interrupted start to the season for Waverley Blues, with Hunter replacing Ben Carboni as coach four rounds into the year.
Waverley Blues sit at the bottom of the Division 2 ladder after suffering heavy defeats to the top two sides Knox and Doncaster East in the past fortnight. Hunter’s side need to make up a game to avoid relegation, but Hunter was confident his side could stay up. “The opposition we have played against, they’re good quality so we have spoken about to not get down in the dumps,” he said. “The teams that have beaten us are good teams and they are beating everyone else as well. “Relegation is not even in my thoughts.” Slater is joined by Division 3 and 4 nominee Lachlan Kennedy from Ferntree Gully. Kennedy has booted six goals in the past two games and was the Eagles’ best player in the eight-point win over Heathmont on Saturday.

VOICE IN THE OUTER
I
am the faceless man standing and cheering. I am the man whose heart bleeds for his team. You hear me every Saturday as the boys run onto the ground. You hear me celebrate every goal. You hear me scream out in agony and cry out in ecstasy. I have an opinion. I have passion. I am the “Voice in the Outer”. Sometimes in sport, the occasion can become bigger than the event itself. Kevin Sheedy had an idea in the early 1990s that saw the AFL institute an annual match between Collingwood and Essendon on Anzac Day. Now that single game is widely viewed as the most significant match of the AFL season outside of finals. The Bombers and Magpies own the day on the sporting calendar. Similarly, more recently, Collingwood and Melbourne have developed the Queen’s Birthday Monday clash as their own. Both have become occasions looked forward to by supporters from across the whole football landscape and the matches have become steeped in folklore and legend. In the Eastern Football League, two of the oldest and fiercest rivals began their own tradition in 2010. Historically, with no EFL football matches scheduled over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, Noble Park and Balwyn approached the League to play an annual stand-alone match on the long weekend. The two clubs have a history and rivalry dating back so far that it actually transcends over four different competitions spanning more than five decades. They saw it as an opportunity to continue their tradition and put the game on centre stage and in the local football spotlight. The Noble Park and Balwyn Football Clubs first met each other in the old Federal League days and were reunited in the early 1980s when Noble Park entered the South East Suburban Football League (now Southern Football League). Coincidentally, Noble Park’s first match in the SESFL was against Balwyn in 1982. The two clubs fought many a tough contest and when a pair of Balwyn favourite sons including captain at that time, Jimmy Hunt who had also won a South East Suburban Football League best and fairest applied to transfer to Noble Park after the 1984 finals series, the rivalry between the two clubs reached fever pitch. Both clubs were involved in a www.efl.org.au
bitter battle with the SESFL over these transfers and the pair stood out of football for some six weeks until they were finally cleared to play for Noble Park. They played their first game for Noble Park in Round 6, 1985, ironically against Balwyn. The rivalry cranked up even higher a few years later, when Balwyn’s 1989 premiership coach David Dickson crossed to join the Bulls as coach and led them to win the 1990 and 1992 senior premierships. Dickson was also able to coax Balwyn premiership rover Danny Staffieri to join him at the Bulls. Balwyn suffered some tough times in the early 1990s but Noble Park enjoyed a real golden period. In 1998 and 1999 this all turned around however, as Balwyn claimed back to back SFL premierships defeating Noble Park on both occasions. The following year the Bulls joined the EFL and the rivalry was reignited in 2007 when their old foes Balwyn were also admitted to our league. The rivalry between the Tigers and Bulls continued in 2012 when a Noble Park favourite son and former premiership player was appointed as senior coach at Balwyn. Daniel Donati led Balwyn to five successive grand finals during his time as senior coach at Cherry Road, claiming four premierships, one of them against his old team, Noble Park in 2013. Since 2010 these foes have been the dominant clubs in the competition. Of the seven Division 1 premierships decided in that time, six have been won by either Balwyn or Noble Park. They have taken the competition to new highs and the Queen’s Birthday weekend clash between Noble Park and Balwyn has become a marquee event on the EFL calendar. The teams have carried their own history and traditions into the match and forged an even stronger relationship. Alternating between the Pat Wright Senior Oval and the Balwyn Recreation Reserve each year, on no occasion has the home team tasted victory on Queen’s Birthday weekend. Each of the seven clashes to date has seen the visiting team walk away with bragging rights. Overall, the two teams have met on 25 occasions in the Eastern Football League with Balwyn holding the advantage, 15-10. The Tigers will be looking to not only maintain this ascendancy over the Bulls but also continue the trend of upsetting their hosts when they venture to the Bullring this week. Despite full Division 1 and 2 rounds scheduled this week and the match no longer holding ‘standalone’ status, it still holds pride of place as one of the main events on the Eastern Football League fixture. The clash between two of the heavyweights of the competition is sure to be another enthralling encounter this year. I’ll see you in the outer! 9

NOBLE PARK: Last Saturday, we were able to start the day with a sleep-in as the U19s had a bye. Our reserves played a close game with a goal in the last few minutes ensuring they took the victory. The seniors were three to four goals in front for three quarters of the game but kicked nine goals in the last quarter to come away with a solid win, which helped the percentage.
Thank-you to those who turned up to the Bulls Casino Night. A great night was had by all, especially during the bidding for the prizes. The Bulls thank all those who donated prizes for the night - Club Noble, Specialty Wine Tours, TLA WorldWide, Keysborough Golf Club, Pharmasave Noble Park, JJacotine Graphic Art Design, Jodie Daniels-Golden Beach Cabins.
Today we welcome dual Bulls premiership player Daniel Donati as guest speaker for our annual Queen’s Birthday match against Balwyn. ‘Nuttsy’ has been busy for the last few years, we believe he was coaching another EFL club. Looking forward to hearing about his ‘incredibull’ playing and coaching journey.

BALWYN: ANOTHER Queen’s Birthday round and again we take on our “old friends” Noble Park - today back at the Bullring. A special welcome from us to the guest speaker at the pre-match luncheon Daniel Donati, who – although of course acknowledged and congratulated as a dual premiership player at Noble - is of course more recently known to all of us at Balwyn as our four-time premiership coach (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016), coach of our Team of the Decade and indeed our Team of the Century coach! ON FIELD: A win again to the senior team defeating Norwood by 41 points last week and climbing to fifth place on the ladder. Well done guys! Take a bow defenders – even though fifth and with less wins than those teams above us, we are currently the team with the least “points against”, only having more than 10 goals scored against us in two games and averaging 8.5 goals “against” across the seven games so far this season. Reserves battled hard to be in front at three quarter time, unlucky not to be ahead at the finish, just couldn’t hang on against a fast finishing Norwood. U19s had a tough day at the office after half time, but pleasingly our numbers of players are building and the camaraderie amongst the group is fantastic. UNDER-19s: We are still seeking some players for our U19 squad, so if you, or someone you know of, is looking for somewhere to play in 2017, please contact coach Chris Day on 0418 606 645. You can register right up until 30 June. NEXT WEEK – Saturday 17 June v. Bayswater – Away, then Montrose at home on 24 June.

DIVISION 1 SOUTH CROYDON: A much better day for the club last weekend – we travelled to Doncaster and were able to secure the points in each game (U19s by forfeit). Seniors and development squad showed much better application and desire than the week before – which is what everyone wants to see. Development squad was in control all day and won by 52 points, while the seniors fought hard to overcome an 18-point half time deficit, keeping the Sharks goalless in the second half for a nine-point result. Another tough assignment today, as we welcome Rowville to the Kennel. We expect nothing less than three tough and competitive games. Social/Club events Gala Ball – June 24th at The Boulevard Kew - $120 canapes on arrival 2 course meal beer and soft drink, U18s $90 (no alcohol). Bookings essential contact Michelle 0409929155 or Cathy 0403122966. Don’t miss out! Past Players Day – July 1st – Rd 11 v North Ringwood. Get talking to your old mates and make a day if it. $50 – includes entry, drinks from 2-5pm (no spirits) light lunch and entry into half time Kennel Club. Check out the Facebook event for contact details. Mudlarks Coterie Luncheon – Friday July 14th at Cheong Park – special guest speaker Richmond Tiger legend and AFL life member Matthew Richardson – tickets $80 per head ($700 for tables of 10); Mudlark members $60 per head. ROWVILLE: Round 7 was held at home for us and we had a massive day planned with our Ladies Day occurring for 2017. Blackburn were in a very similar position to our 19s. Blackburn blitzed us early kicking two early goals, but it kept the margin minimal heading into the first break. Our boys got into gear in the second, kicking two goals to one to win the quarter. Blackburn went on to kick three goals to two in the third term. The last quarter did not disappoint, goal for goal. Blackburn scored a couple of goals late to finish out on top by 13 points. Our reserves were up against an unbeaten Blackburn. The boys played some good footy in the first have but we certainly didn’t capitalise on those opportunities. The second half saw us come out full of running, dominated the contested possession and moved the ball fluently. However, in the last quarter Blackburn began to take control and were able to hang on for a one-point victory. Our seniors had all the footy in the first quarter but only went in with a small lead at the first break. The second quarter was tight and it was even at half time. Blackburn dominated in the third, kicking six goals to none. The last quarter was tough and even. Unfortunately, three quarters of footy doesn’t get us over the line! We have a comedy night coming up! Stay tuned for details. For more info go to our FB page or website.

VERMONT: Nice to have East Ringwood visit us, it has been a while. The seniors made hard work of it and East were very determined. We got hold of the game in third quarter and result was good. The better players were Lachie Johns, Joel Perry, Tom Schneider, Cam Howat, Rory Lehmann, Adam Parker and Jake Best. Congratulations to Matt McKenzie on his first senior game and he did well. The reserves game was similar, but our defenders were on top all day to keep them goalless. The better players were Brad Neil, James Krikas, Matt Garvin, Lachie Gould, Cal Mendes and Bailey Hotker. The under-19s started like last week with poor kicking for goal and actually were trailing at the break, then they took over completely to record a massive win. The better players were Kody Logan, Lachie Pickering, Mick Maio, Hamish McGowan, Taine Barlow and Jack O’Keefe. The GWeagles won again over our old enemy East Burwood to put themselves in the five. The better players were Ryan Fitzgerald, Ben Gray Fraser, James White, Nick Pearson, Matt Jenkins and Zac Trotter. Netballers had a bad game but a win is not far away. Maybe last night?? We have the major raffle on the go. Please see Brian Power if you would like to be involved. The next lunch is Doncaster on June 17th with the state opposition leader Matthew Guy our guest speaker. Book with Mike Rennie 0422413970. Ladies Lunch is 17th of July. Go Eagles!!

DIVISION 1 BLACKBURN: A slow start last week was overcome by another dominant second half against Rowville, with a 10 goal to three effort, including another seven-goal haul to Jake Hammond and three goals to Dylan Vizzarri. The reserves welcomed Tom Bridges and Flynn Power from the 19s as they played their first senior games at the club in what was a gripping one-point win against quality opposition. Jake “Milky” Bellis kicked a couple and was named in the best with Jimmy MacFarlane, James Pell and Micky Dunn. The U19s put up another consistent four quarter effort and came away with a solid 13-point win with Marcus Young kicking three and Oscar Aliotta and Ty Wightman named in the best. This week we welcome an in-form Montrose to the Pit to battle it out for the annual “Step Back Think Cup”. This is a worthy cause and our lunch will be attended by Caterina Politi with all U17 & U19 players and parents. Caterina is the mother of one punch victim David Cassai (Rye – NYE 2012). PLAYERS RAFFLE: Tickets are available for our Monster Raffle with first prize, a $3,000 holiday package in Bali (with $1500 spending money). MONTROSE: Last week we recorded two wins against Nth Ringwood. The U19s had a great win set up by an efficient second quarter, kicking 4.4 and then held on to record a 15-point win. Best – Quirk, Marshall, Harvey and Pleming. The reserves had a lapse in the second that would eventually prove costly. Kicking 1.6 in the third didn’t help either, eventually going down by 23 points. The boys tried really hard, but just couldn’t get over the line (even with Stocky taking mark of the year). Best – Schickerling, Cooper, Stockton and Gibb. The seniors came out of the blocks firing and with Gazza and Jack converting up forward, held a seven-goal lead at half time. North worked their way back into the game during the third, and in the last quarter, piled on the goals to take the lead with six minutes left. However, we held our nerve in a frantic last few minutes as Kel kicked two goals to run out winners by seven points. Best – Moore, Garthwaite, Little and Wright. Our next major function is our Trivia Night on Sat June 24th at 6.30 pm. For bookings see Natasha Wilkinson or go onto Trybooking – www.trybooking.com/267275. DIVISION 1 NORTH RINGWOOD: Today we host Bayswater for the first time in a few years as we welcome Saints past players and officials for their annual get-together to reminisce on old times and see how much better they were than last year. Last week at Montrose the under-19s started slowly and slipped on the team-play bit going down narrowly. Reserves had a very good 27-point win against solid opposition. Well done to the whole team on an excellent team effort. Seniors didn’t fare so well with Montrose leading by 15 points at the first change, and then kicking seven goals straight in the second quarter to our two goals three. Coach Peter Banfield must have wielded a magic wand or a big stick at half time as there was a complete turnaround in our form with some great team play passages and much better delivery into the forward line in the second half. We kicked 9.9 to 4.4 in the second half and went down narrowly by seven points after hitting the lead late in the last quarter. Excellent show of strength to come from seven goals down at half time and get in front, but the guys were pretty low after losing the match, but it just shows that you can’t always climb back to the top of the mountain after giving the opposition a big start. For full match details go to NRFC website: nthringwoodfc.com.au Tickets still available for Saints Team Of The Decade next Saturday night. Contact Joe Tunstall on 0424522646 or joetunstall@gmail. com for tickets. Go Saints!!!!

BAYSWATER: An even first quarter in the development squad, then Noble got slightly on top to lead by 17 points at the main break. We lifted in the third and got back into the game to lead by eight points going in to the last. We couldn’t quite maintain the pressure. Unfortunately, two goals to one saw us concede by six points. Our best effort for the year and even more meritorious considering the numerous players being unavailable. Connor White was welcomed back with two goals and two to Dighty. Best were Dighty, Zac, Harro and Grubby. The seniors were jumped early to trail by 19 points but rallied in the second but wayward goal-kicking was costing us and with the same number of scoring shots at half time, we were down by 20. Still in touch coming into the last, 22 points down, then the wheels really fell off when the Bulls put on nine goals to one. Schroedes got three with Wayno two. Better players for three quarters were, Mitch, Malcs, Vandy and Reece Schuth. The trip to North Ringwood today is always a tricky trip but we believe we are in with a real chance. Go Baysie.

DIVISION 1 EAST RINGWOOD: Not a great day at Terrara Rd with all three teams well-beaten.
EAST RINGWOOD
The colts began very well before being overwhelmed by an outstanding and unbeaten Eagles unit. The development squad was hit by illness and could field only 18 men including four colts who had already played on the day. The result was predictable unfortunately. Scott Maizels was a stand-out in defence and the colts’ boys were prominent. The seniors applied intense pressure to restrict the Eagles early but a 10-minute lapse in the third term which conceded five goals, broke the game open. Our boys continued to crack in but were beaten by a better side on the day. We host Doncaster today and must carry our intensity and pressure into this week if we are to get a much-needed win. Mark in your diaries the President’s Lunch on 24/6 featuring the great Dale ‘Flea” Weightman, the Mid-Season Ball at the Carlton Brew House, Abbotsford on July 21 and the second President’s Lunch on 5/8 with Peter Schwab as our special guest. DONCASTER: None from two last week against South Croydon. Unfortunately, due to numbers and a huge injury toll, we couldn’t field colts and made the decision to give the boys a run in the reserves. That said it didn’t help our lot with the twos only able to manage one goal for the day, going down by over 50 points. Best – Richards, Kapnias, Christey, Simic and Thiel. Seniors – there was a big build up all week for Jarv’s 300th and despite a decent second term, we couldn’t split the middle for the second half. A disappointing finish to what should have been a big celebration (though we still did!!) for Humph’s big day. Thanks to South Croydon for participating in Jarv’s send off. Best – Jarvis, Komen, Annakis, Marganis, Kalanj and Schimma. Today, we are away to East Ringwood and note we are away again next week to Vermont. Coterie memberships are still available, Business Lunch this year is on Friday 21st July with guest Darren “Boof” Lehmann. This one always sells out well in advance so see Laddie ASAP if you are interested. See you inside for a punt……STICKTA!!!!

TIGERS STIRRING
T
he toughest assignment in Division 2 awaits Mitcham this weekend with a trip to Knox Gardens Reserve to take on the unbeaten Falcons.
Off the back of an 18-point win over Mulgrave last weekend which saw young forward Jake Parente kick six goals, senior coach Neil Winterton has been rapt with the 19-year-old’s season to date. The opening two months of the season has seen Parente nominated for the Leader Young Gun award, as well as lead the Division 2 goal-kicking after seven rounds. “He’s a serious talent,” Winterton said. “We were fortunate to get him out of the TAC program last year – he played with the Eastern Ranges. “We got him for a couple of games but you can see the difference just from last year to this year.” The Parente match-up has caused opposition coaches numerous headaches this season, including booting a bag of seven against the Waverley Blues in Round 3, and four against a finals-bound Lilydale in Round 6.
By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL
“If I’m going to be brutally honest at the moment, Knox, Lilydale and Donny East are probably a little bit ahead of us at the moment (but) we certainly think we can get to that level. “We believe that on our day, we can beat anyone. “If we want to be able to compete with those top three teams, we’ve got to be able to put forward a more consistent effort.” The win against Mulgrave in Round 7 has Mitcham in the hunt for finals at the mid-way point of the season, ahead of the club’s biggest test yet of toppling a Knox side which has taken all before it in 2017. “(The Mulgrave win) gives us that one game buffer, and we’re still inside the (top) four by a game which is important,” Winterton said. “It is crucial (against Knox) that we account ourselves really well. “Obviously, the win is what we want, but we just need to prove that we can hang with these teams for four quarters.
“He’s got a bit of swagger about him which I don’t mind for a key forward and any time we can get it to him one on one, he’s a difficult proposition,” Winterton said.
“We were certainly competitive against Donny East for periods and even Lilydale last week – the score probably didn’t reflect that in the end.
“He’s very good in the air but he’s also very quick and agile at ground level so he’s a tough matchup for the opposition.”
“That’s what we need to be if we’re going to be competitive in the finals - if we make finals, we don’t want to be making up the numbers we want to be able to account ourselves really well.”
The Tigers’ 4-3 start to the season has Winterton’s men in the hunt for September, despite heavy losses to Doncaster East in Round 5 and Lilydale in Round 6. While Winterton concedes there are three sides ahead of the Tigers at this stage of the season, the belief remains high at Walker Park. “We were really happy with the way we started the year,” he said. “We had a little of a bit of a setback in the last two weeks against Donny East and Lilydale. www.efl.org.au
In Division 2’s toughest assignment, Winterton’s Tigers are looking forward to the Knox challenge. “We don’t know a hell of a lot about them because they’ve been up in Division 1 for so long, I know they’ve got a number of quality players,” he said. “We’ll do our homework but out at their ground I’d imagine it’s going to be a tough proposition but one we’re looking forward to.” 29

DIVISION 2 CROYDON: This week we welcome officials, players and supporters from Mulgrave to Swinburne Oval. Last week we had three games for three wins. Well done boys especially to the seniors as it’s been a long time since we tasted victory at Wantirna South. The scores were 14-10 to 10-11. Ben Riley, Daniel Lemon, Andrew Hughes and Brendan Weinert in a new role midfield and back-line were our best. The highlight of the seconds’ 76-point win was the six goals by Luke Styles. Luke has done it tough having copped an ACL in a junior grand final a few years back. To Luke’s credit he has fought back from adversity. Best players for the seconds were Luke Styles, Riley Britton and Ollie Adams. The under-19s won by 41 points with Nick Walkden and Luke Sparkes each kicking four goals. Best players were Andrew Carter, Josh Mutsaers and Jai Mortimer. Best wishes for a quick recovery to Jake Taylor who suffered a bad injury. It’s time to book for our Mid-Season Ball to be held at the Carlton Brew House in Abbotsford next Saturday, 17 June from 7-30pm. It costs $110 per person and includes canapés on arrival, a two-course dinner and a four-hour beverage package of Carlton Draught tank beer, cider, wine, soft drinks and a cash bar for mixed spirits and there is a large dance floor and beer garden. Other upcoming events for you to put in your dairy are the annual club auction on 29 July, major raffle draw on 12 August and past player’s day, last round, 26 August.

ROUND 8: SATURDAY 10 JUNE 2017
MULGRAVE: This week, we travel to Croydon for three very competitive games. Last weekend we played host to Mitcham in seniors and reserves with the under-19s having a bye. Once again, the reserves were in the game all day and pushed a very talented Mitcham side to go down by 22 points. Best were Mitch Peddle, Ian McLennan and Baxter Leece. The seniors were very competitive at the contest, but execution let us down and we went down by 18 points. Best were Alistair Tilyard, Cal Thornton and Seb Henderson.

DIVISION 2 DONCASTER EAST: Well that’s what I call a good win! In recent times, Heights Reserve hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for us but it was all guns blazing last week with every player contributing to a definitive win. Today is yet another big test – against the might of the Lilydale Falcons who have demonstrated over the past couple of weeks that they’re in fighting form. We’ll have to be at our absolute best to atone for our two losses against them in 2016 – we’re a different team this year and a win will give us a two-game clear stranglehold on second possie. In the ressies, today is the 250th game played by one of Donny East’s all-time great clubmen - Peter Sowersby. Pete started his footy with Beverley Hills Juniors about 100 years ago and has well and truly earned his legend status. On the social front, our Monster Raffle Day is on Sunday July 9 at Zerbes – get your tickets from Dave Sowersby - and the Donny East Ball, celebrating 50 years of DEFC/Beverley Hills Footy Club – Saturday July 29 at Manningham Centre. “Our Supporters roar every time that we score….we’re the Boys from Donny East” - Colonel

MITCHAM: LAST WEEK: Excellent week for the footy club last week both on and off the field. Seniors and reserves both had good wins against Mulgrave away. First XVIII worked a lot harder this week and got the result they were after with young Jake Parente booting six. Ryan, Gordon, Rudd, Zac McCubbin, and Miles all named in the best. Second XVIII with a great mix of youth and experience won a tight contest against the Lions with Hoegel responding in the best possible way with six majors and the young blokes in Barro, Parente, Kable and Sullivan all named in the best. Then Saturday night, the sixth annual Mitcham Football Club Comedy Night was again an outstanding success, WOWWEE what a crowd - 400 people and not a spare seat in the house, nor a dry eye as Lehmo and Hughesy WOWED the big crowd. Great effort by the Mitcham faithful to turn out in big numbers both at the event then in set up and pack up. WELL DONE, ALL. Great to have councillors Prue Cutts and Ben Stennett with us Saturday night who made the announcement that council has allocated funding in the 2017/18 proposed budget to work with the Mitcham Sports Club to scope and develop a concept for an upgrade to our current pavilions. Watch this space. Today - BIG task against the flag favourites Knox away and we will need to bring our absolute A-grade game if we’re going to match it with the Falcons. Our forces will be a little divided today as the Mitcham footy club hosts the AFL Vic Metro Junior Champs and Monday at the MCG of the East. Social - attention now turns to our next major event the Gala Ball on Saturday 1st of July, more details in the coming weeks, see Michelle Lucas for tickets. DON’T FORGET to keep up to date with all the news, views and reviews via the official Mitcham Football Club site at www.mitchamfc. sportingpulse.net and Facebook feeds. Good luck to all teams today and enjoy your footy #strongandbold

DIVISION 2 UPPER FERNTREE GULLY: Great first quarter against Lilydale last week but then that was it for the day. The rest of the weekend was not much better with the U19s, Reserves, vets and women’s teams all failing to win despite some good performances. The vets welcomed some new and old faces and finally started a game with a bench. Today we welcome Mooroolbark to Kings Park as well as Ferntree Gully in the U19s. The rest of the club has the weekend off with no footy or netball due to the Queen’s Birthday. Don’t forget tomorrow is the $5k draw, if you haven’t got your ticket yet see Sharon or Maxine today. The THF Lunch is on next Saturday the 17th June, Tony Liberatore has been confirmed as guest speaker for this important day. Sportsman’s Night is on Wednesday the 28th June at the clubrooms, this promises to be a great night featuring comedian Des Dowling as MC alongside Brendan Fevola, Dougie Hawkins, Joe Daniher, Debbie Lee and our very own Josh Begley. The vets are organising a Trivia Night to be held on the 8th July. The annual Ladies Night has been locked in for the 15th July, tickets available now. The King Club is again available for support this season so see Neil Thompson if interested or contact Andy Lee for your social membership. Thanks to all our sponsors who are back on board this year, please use them and mention you are from the club. Good luck today Upper……go the red and blue!

MOOROOLBARK: Last week saw us at home again, this time taking on Doncaster East in fine conditions. The reserves jumped out of the blocks with a five-goal to zip first quarter and never looked back, going on to record a comfortable 70-point victory. ‘Fordy’ top-scored with five goals while Sam Downie snagged three. Kal Harper produced his best form for the season with best on ground honours and was ably supported by McGee, Cain, Westwood, Hagar and Plant. The seniors also had a great first term but unfortunately couldn’t maintain that form for the next three quarters, going down by 45 points against the second-placed Donny East. Trent Georgiou’s return to senior footy produced three goals with Kid also booting three. Kane Noonan tried all game and was adjudged best on ground. Others in the best were Stephens, J.McManus, Sutherland, Slattery and S.McManus. With two away games ahead of us we need to regroup and get back into the winning mode. Today we travel to Kings Park to take on Upper Gully with a win vital to both sides if we’re to feature in finals action. Last week’s Silent Disco was a great success with a huge crowd turning up. Well done to those involved in the organisation and a big thanks to our “hands on” president who manned the bar all night. Remember to get down to the club on Friday nights for Happy Hour and Members Draw, which is up around $1,000. Bar opens at 5.00pm. GO MUSTANGS!!!

WANTIRNA SOUTH: Three games and three losses against Croydon at home last week. A disappointing day, however, I know all sides can bounce back today against Waverley. The seniors are only two games outside the top four, so this is a must win game. Our reserves are a big chance to register another win and if our under-19s put four quarters together, we will win. Good luck to all teams. Our next player’s function is on Saturday, June 10th. See Jake Denes for details. Our major raffle day is fast approaching. It is on Saturday, June 24.
