INSIDE THE EFL Community Club Sustainability Program

2016 saw the beginning of the most significant reform in community football history with the state-wide introduction of the first phase of the Community Club Sustainability Program, the Player Points System. To follow in 2017 will be a Salary Cap, along Phil Murton with a range of educational tools EFL Chief Executive Officer for players and clubs. Feedback on the introduction of the Player Points System to date has been extremely positive. It was acknowledged from the outset that starting at 50 points meant not all clubs would be materially affected in year one. This hasn’t been a bad thing. What it has done is allow leagues and clubs to become familiar with the system in an environment that isn’t as pressurized as it may have been. In competitions where points systems had been in place we’d seen similar results to competitions without. What it did show when the entire state was reassessed using the new system was that the list profile of clubs in leagues where points systems had been in place had less player points totals indicating less player turnover, less mass recruiting and greater retention. These are some of the outcomes we are hoping for. There is no doubt that as the total team points reduce over time the intricacies and challenges of the system will come to the fore. Clubs will need to be more careful of who they recruit and have a list strategy that looks further than the next 12 months. The numbers have been interesting. While there are some clubs who have averaged in the mid-high 40’s, they aren’t necessarily the best teams with the high profile players. For example, Nunawading, a team with well-publicised troubles and an almost entirely new playing group, have had quite high points totals all year. It’s been a significant change but something across the industry that was needed. The collective efforts and collegiality of leagues right across the state has been wonderful to see with footy, both metro and country, working together more than ever before. The salary cap is the next challenge and the limits proposed for the EFL are below.

Division One Division Two Division Three Division Four

$225K $150K $100K $75K

While to start with not every metro league will have exactly the same limit, there will need to be a level of similarity between the major leagues to ensure one league is not advantaged more than others. The limits are also not an aspirational figure for clubs, nor players. The aim is to put a ceiling on the two or three clubs in most competitions who the most resourced and then over time try and reduce this number. Similar to competitions like the VFL, it is anticipated most clubs will spend less than 80% of the salary cap limit. There are some sceptics regarding the ability of a salary cap to be policed. I’ve spoken at many clubs in the last two years and to everyone who has posed that question I’ve asked, “who does not want it to work”? To this stage no one has told me they don’t want a salary cap in local footy to work. If we start from that point, that as an industry we want it to work, then have a fair system with significant penalties in place for players and clubs who knowingly cheat and are caught, it’s a good place to start. The penalties need to be a significant deterrent. Do you want to be the player suspended for 12 months for cheating? Or the club President standing up in front of players, members, sponsors, your junior club and community, explaining why you will have points deducted for the next three years along with a large fine? Community footy isn’t like professional sport with media rights underpinning the economics of the game. The economics of local footy are built on the tireless work of thousands of volunteers. And feedback has told us that as an industry, both in the country and metro regions, we are almost at tipping point regarding the goodwill of these wonderful volunteers generating money to pay players. There isn’t an endless bucket of money behind the bar clubs can keep dipping their hand into. Most players in the game play for nothing. It’s time those fortunate enough to get some reward for their efforts understand where it comes from and the impact generating it has. See you at the footy this weekend.

FINALS ENTRY The following entry prices (including GST) will apply: ADULT CONCESSION** ALL DIVISIONS FINALS $13.00 $7.00 GRAND FINALS $15.00^ $9.00^ VETERANS FINALS $5.00 N/A - Children under the age of 16 are admitted FREE to all finals. - ** Concession includes age pension cards, Veteran Affairs cards and disability pension cards - ^ $2 from the entry price of all grand finals will be donated to the Blue Ribbon Foundation CAR PARKING AT FINALS VENUES Car parking inside finals venues may be limited. This will be communicated via the website and to competing clubs in the week leading up to the game. With much larger crowds than for home and away games, don’t assume you will be able to get a park inside most venues as this will not be the case. Councils have also advised that a parking officer will be in attendance, so park only in designated areas. NO DOGS Dogs are banned at all EFL games. ALCOHOL AT FINALS VENUES Patrons attending finals are not permitted to bring alcohol into the venues. At venues where cars have access to the grounds, a condition of entry is that boots are inspected and this will be rigidly enforced.

Apart from ensuring compliance with liquor licensing and council by-laws, it helps to protect clubs revenues from finals. As in past years, there will be a two-can limit on purchases and all alcohol sold will be opened by bar staff on purchase. These are part of the licensing requirements. ONE PAYMENT PER VENUE We’ll again be adopting an approach where your admittance will allow entry for the full day at that particular venue. Each venue has its own admission fee, so if you choose to move between venues you’ll, need to pay a second entry. FINALS UMPIRES The league will supply three field, two boundary and two goal umpires for each finals match. STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH FINALS SCORES Want to know the live scores of other ‘Bendigo Bank’ finals? The EFL Media Team will be using Twitter to bring you all the Around the Grounds Scores. They will be ‘tweeting’ live quarter by quarter scores and ‘re-tweeting’ EFL clubs and fans who are keeping the social media world up-to-date with how their team is performing. But you don’t have to sign up to a Twitter account to get access to live scores! VALE ROY BALDWIN (OAM) The Eastern Football League would like to pass its condolences to the Baldwin family and the Kilsyth Football Club following the passing of Roy Baldwin. Roy’s services to sport in the Eastern Suburbs were undeniable a life member of the Eastern Football League and the Ringwood District Cricket Association as well as Kilsyth Football and Cricket Club. In 1944 Baldwin was recruited to Hawthorn, where he played 17 reserve games and 1 senior game. Winning the Reserves Best and Fairest. Following a recruitment to the army Roy was recruited back to Hawthorn where he played a further 41 senior games, a Hernia injury hampered his ability at that level. Roy returned to Kilsyth in 1951 and played in consecutive Division 1 premierships, the most successful period in Kilsyth history. Baldwin was a multiple club Best and Fairest winner and a threetime League Best and Fairest. He also represented the league on 15 occasions. He was certainly one of the most decorated players in the history of the EDFL. Roy was awarded the Order of Australia in 1983 for his outstanding services to football and cricket, following this Roy had the top oval at Pinks Reserve named after him. Off the field, Roy spent 30+ years on the Kilsyth committee and put his hand up for more than 25 years marking lines and cleaning change rooms.

FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BRAVE By David McPherson The Templestowe Dockers will be hoping for a case of third time lucky as the club heads deep into the Division 3 final series for the third successive season. After surrendering a 26-point lead at the final change of the 2014 grand final and bowing out in last year’s preliminary final with an injury-ravaged lineup, the purple haze is readying itself for yet another crack at an elusive flag. This time coach Rick Irwin is hoping that fortune smiles upon his team. “Certainly what we learnt from last year is you need a bit of luck from the footy gods. If you don’t get your players on the park it’s hard work,” he said. Irwin knows that his team has already missed an opportunity to make some of its own luck by securing a week off in the finals, but remains confident the Dockers can finally get their hands on some silverware. “We won’t hide from the fact that top is the spot you’ve got to aim for in a top five – that hasn’t worked out for us so it’s all the more reason why it’s a big challenge,” he said. An agonising one-point loss to Upper Ferntree Gully in last week’s semi-final has booked Templestowe a preliminary final date with Ringwood – an opponent which has Irwin’s full attention.

got to manage this week, and to be honest they all won’t get up,” Irwin said. “On the weekend we had [ex-Richmond rookie] Cadeyn Williams hurt his ankle, John-Paul Maletzis who did his eye the week before and Matthew Mariani pulled out Saturday morning.” The Dockers will call upon their substantial depth to hold out until the cavalry arrives. “We’ve had 41 players go through in the senior side so our depth has really stood up,” Irwin said. “If we were to be able to get through the prelim and be unscathed we’d probably get three or four back the following week.” With a mountain to climb and unfavourable odds ahead of them, Templestowe is relishing the prospect of finding a way to rewrite their tired, old script. “It’s exciting – the finals are still alive and well. Gully is undefeated and has beaten us now three times but we’re still alive,” Irwin said. “There’s still two weeks to go – there’s a lot of footy to be played yet. We’re still very confident that we can be there right until the end.”

“I’m really conscious that we’ve got to concentrate on Ringwood because at the end of the day if we don’t beat Ringwood, how I think we can beat the Gully [in the grand final] is irrelevant,” he said. “I’ve got to preach what I say to the players. Gully is done now – put them in the cupboard they’re finished. This week we concentrate on Ringwood.” “They have momentum, they’ve won five games in a row, two finals, they’re well coached, they’ve got a good game plan… I highly respect this team we’re playing this week.” The Dockers will again have to offset some prominent losses, with a number of players unavailable for selection. “Ryan Bain did his ACL in the first practice match, our ruckman Adrian Fancellu went down round four – a six foot five bull from the VFL.” “Al Kumurdian, our full-back who was recovering from an ACL hurt his knee again. Daniel Pearce, who was recruited from the Bulldogs, is my waterboy because he got into the CFA which is great for him.” A number of players are also racing the clock to be ready for this week’s preliminary final. “We’ve got a few sore boys from Saturday that we’ve

STATSBENCH Whilst the streak-meter says Balwyn with the one in a row against Vermont it belies the truth that Vermont have not beaten the Tigers in their last seven matches which includes two draws. More compelling is that the Eagles have won just one Noel McPhee of their last 17 match @statsbench ups. Just a few weeks ago Balwyn crushed the Eagles. Would anyone pick against Vermont in a final but Balwyn’s record is just as good. Seven finals matchups between these two with Balwyn leading 5 – 2. Rowville will be kicking themselves for missing a golden opportunity to beat Balwyn. No time for self-pity they must regroup and have another shot at Noble Park. The Bulls will be bullish if they can get a crack at Balwyn having beaten them twice this season but we are getting ahead of ourselves. Not much between any of the four remaining teams. Some fine celebrations will be taking place in midEastern or outer-Eastern Melbourne approximately 5pm today. Whether a 32 year drought or a 29 year drought is broken does not matter – either way it is a very long time. Forest Hill upset the apple care of the Eagles in the second semi to maintain a perfect record against Ferntree Gully in finals. The Eagles have won 26 or their past 27 matches. Both teams have experienced finals heartache since their last flag, none more heartbreaking than the Zebras extra time loss a few years ago. Division 4 Finals Forest Hill

Funny game football is my view. A few weeks back Mooroolbark looked the goods and Wantirna South were struggling to make the finals. Nekminute Wantirna South have crushed Doncaster East and Mooroolbark made to look ordinary by Bayswater. One win apiece in their two encounters this year and surprisingly the first time they have come up against each other in a final. Division 2 Finals Mooroolbark

Look at Ringwood get on a roll – now with five successive wins and the best time of the season to do so. A few weeks back they were struggling to get enough wins together to make finals now they are the one win away from a first Division 3 Grand Final. But as the SBRD always says – Templestowe did not finish second for no reason. The Dockers have won the last five between the teams. This is their first meeting in a final.

The Culture Club By Brett Beston A strong culture coupled with some smart recruitment has unlocked the key to success for the Ferrntree Gully Eagles this season. For a side that missed the finals in 2015 albeit narrowly, the turnaround in fortunes this year has been significant. And as the side prepares for their shot at glory this weekend in the Division Four Grand Final, head coach Peter Farrell couldn’t be happier with their progress. “We have an abundance of young talent that took us a long way last year, but what we did through the off season was to be really strategic with our recruiting and really target some more experienced players that had played at higher levels to make sure we were able to provide an environment for further development with our kids. Among the new faces, John Goodman and Michael Edwards were both formerly with Montrose, while Billy Morrison joined from East Doncaster. Morrison a key forward come ruck was drafted to Collingwood as a first round pick in 2006, and is described by his coach as “an exceptional footballer.” And for a side that only suffered its first loss two weeks ago after an unbeaten home and away season, the new recruits coupled with a good core of young and experienced players have the Eagles eyeing their first flag in nearly 20 years. But as any successful club will tell you it’s as much about what happens off the field as what happens on it, and Farrell says club culture is very much to the forefront at Glenfern Road. “We deliberately targeted those who we thought were good people as part of our cultural development. We are always striving to improve all facets of our club and culture is crucial, from the administration through to the coaching staff. The other thing we recruited to the club this year was leadership to assist in the development of our younger players and to make sure we put in place some really strong core values as a playing group.”

For a club with a proud tradition it seems surprising that their last senior flag was way back in 1987 and while confident the drought can be broken, Farrell is under no illusions as to the magnitude of the challenge this weekend. “Well premierships don’t fall off trees; there are a lot of things that have to go right just to get to this week, combined with a whole lot of work from a lot of people. I’m sure if you spoke to other footie clubs they would say exactly the same thing.” But regardless of the result, the goals remain the same. “One of our big focuses has been to build a foundation and win, lose or draw this week that focus doesn’t change. There’s a real emphasis on player development. I think we’ve debuted 17 under age players since I got to the club two seasons ago and that will continue as we strive for a sustainable foundation for long-term success.” And what about the loss two weeks ago to this weekend’s opponent Forrest Hill?, “I think in a way it was really important we had that experience and we were pretty quick to reflect on that and realise that it was a great opportunity to readjust our mindset. We had won 28 games in a row to that point including practice matches. So it was good for us in terms of a bit of a mental reset which I think we needed.” And with minds retuned and two other potential premierships on offer, if everything falls into place The Eagles will certainly be flying high come Sunday night.

Demographically the coach believes the Eagles are well placed moving forward. “I think there’s a really good balance; I’d say without having done the numbers that 30 to 40% of the group is under 21, then there’s a sprinkling of that mid age bracket and a good balance of older guys. I think our list is about where we would like it to be. Our junior club is extremely strong, we won three or four premierships this year from under 12 up to 17s and of course our under 19’s are playing in the grand final this week as well.” In fact the club has three sides in grand finals this weekend with the reserves rounding out the trifecta. www.efl.org.au

VERMONT: We are thrilled to have all of our teams at Bayswater today and congratulate the players, coaches, officials and supporters for a fantastic home & away season. We know finishing on top counts for little in the finals and that now is the time to produce the goods. May we also congratulate our second U19 team the Forest Hill Eagles, who although beaten last Saturday in the Preliminary Final and finishing a very creditable third, had a great year when you consider most of our boys are bottom age. A sensational effort from Coach Christian Vaughan and the players. SOCIAL: The Social Club is open back at Vermont tonight as it will be each Saturday night. We have massive day planned for Sunday the 18th of September. Day after EFL Grand Final, when we have our first Major Eagle Raffle day. Tickets will also allow two people to join us for lunch and refreshments and you can secure yours today from Michael Rennie, Graeme Lawrence or any Committee person. If you are not getting our E-Mail News. Ask us at vermont@efl.org.au. Coming dates are the Under19 Presentation Night on Thursday 29th September and the Senior Presentation Night on Friday 30th September. We wish all our players today the best of luck and may they play their best footy. Go Eagles!!!

Coach: Asst. Coach: Trainer: Runner: Team Manager:

BALWYN: What a great win last week. Courage, Character and Team First ... A low scoring hard fought come from behind win, by 7 points! One of our great matches at Bayswater - and we’ve had a few! But now we move ahead to today and our clash against Vermont – always a great contest. C’mon Tiges – there’s a lot at stake. A win today and we’re in the Grand Final again! JEFF GOBBELS – 100 GAMES. Sincere congratulations to “Gobbes”, who today plays his 100th game for Balwyn FC. He’s been fantastic for our club since arriving from Perth, playing an integral role in our premierships in 2012 (Blue Ribbon Medallist for Best on Ground), 2013 and 2015. A crowd favorite, he’s won “Members Most Valuable” awards and of course his Best and Fairest in 2015. He leads the EFL goal kicking tally this year and has also represented the EFL at Interleague level. We could go on ... Well done Jeff – we’re hoping to see some more of your magic today! 2016 BEST & FAIREST Our Best and Fairest will be at the Social Club at Balwyn Park on Saturday 24 September. $80 per person for 3 course meal and drinks on arrival, cash bar during dinner. Book now with Jo Tregear on 0412 172 183 or balwyn@efl.org.au LOOK THE PART IN TIGERS GEAR We have a small amount of Balwyn FC hoodys left for sale, and also our Centenary polo shirts. $50 each. Call Jo Tregear (details above) to secure yours. Don’t miss out! Look the part for finals! Go Tiges!

UMPIRES: Dylan Fulton, Maurice De Vincentis and Luke Hunter

BLACKBURN: In front of a big and vocal red army, it was a very pleasing way to kick start the 2016 Finals campaign for our Development Squad as they comfortably turned the tables from the last encounter with a stirring win against Rowville. In what turned out to be a more experienced line up, the whole team combined to absorb the early half pressure of the Hawks and then build momentum and play on our terms for the rest of the game. Whilst up forward there were some solid efforts and multiple goal kickers (Geilings 4, Adey 3, Z. Hudson 2), it was the extra hard work of the defensive group that dried up opportunities and provided constant rebound and offerings to our onballers on the day. Rowville were keep scoreless for the second half of the match which was an amazing effort against such quality opposition and in such an important game. Other efforts of note included Banksy’s dominance through the air in the ruck and the run an carry of Woosha, Rubes, Chan Le and Gazza who all combined to play a “catch me if you can” game for much of the day. We have won the right to come up against a rested and skilled Vermont at Bayswater and it should prove to be a tight and tough encounter. With a frustrating draw in the first match of the year followed by a less than convincing effort against the purple machine in Rnd 14, the boys will be cherry ripe to turn the tables and earn a week off the following week. Each Burner that runs out today wearing the red & black stipes has definitely earnt his spot amongst a large group of players that have qualified to play in the team. The commitment shown last week by players that missed out in maintaining their spirit and support with match day roles is a testament to the group ethos and culture that has been building this year and the players are to be congratulated. Let’s go Burners! Future player related functions include Sunday 18th September (day after EFL GF) - Vote Count and Friday 23rd Sept - Presentation Night. There will be more information to follow in the weeks to come. MONTROSE: The development squad journeyed to Ringwood last week to take on Norwood again in the elimination final. We knew it wasn’t going to be all our own way as it was last week; And that was certainly the case. We wasted shots in front early and at half time went in 9 x points down. In the third quarter, whilst restricting the opposition to 1.1, we only scored 1.2 ourselves and knew we needed to change things around to have any hope as we were 8 x points down. Then finally, we started to use the ball better and with our desperation rising, began to claw our way back into the game. Even when Norwood kicked their 7th goal, our guys rallied and threw themselves at every contest. When we kicked the last goal to hit the lead with 2 minutes left, some older heads were composed and steady, controlling the tempo until the siren sounded with Montrose winning by 3 x points 7.7.49 to 7.4.44. Best – Bennington, Fielding, Welsh, McArdle & Weatherly. So let’s really give it a crack from the start today and support the players. Our Presentation Night is on Friday 23rd Sept Tickets $90 ea – Tables are filling fast, so add your name to the list upstairs in the rooms to book a table. We are also looking for players for our U17 team for next year – so if you are interested or know of some young players that would like to play, we would love to hear from you! NORWOOD: Last weekend didn’t turn out like we planned, the 19’s were outclassed by a bigger, stronger & more committed Noble Park. There were patches of good football by the boys but they just couldn’t string together consistent smart football. Thankfully they have another chance to redeem themselves when they come up against Blackburn in the first semi final. The Development Squad had 3 good quarters but when it mattered couldn’t hold their composure & convert, unfortunately it went down to the wire with a 3 point loss. Overall the season hasn’t been the success we had dreamed off, but in true Norwood fashion we will be back in Season 2017 bigger, better & stronger. Good luck to the 19’s. BLACKBURN: The Div U19 Burners travelled to Jubilee Park last week to take on a fired up Doncaster in the Elimination Final. Despite the Burners having won both previous encounters, the game shaped as a danger game for the boys in the red and black stripes. The squad was keen to erase some disappointing memories at the ground and came out of the blocks kicking 3.3 to 1.2 in the 1st Qtr. It was a battle of the midfields as contested footy was king in a bid to give both forward lines opportunities to score. Another 3 goals to 1 in the second qtr had the lads pretty confident that they could finish off the job in the second half. Joel Merret was putting on a master class in the open spaces and Joshy Myers, Kyle Hawley and Matty Herman were dominating the aerial drills with strong contested marking. Peter Alier showed some silky moves on the wing with super clean hands. As has been the case in some previous games and despite some injuries to be carried in the second half, the boys sat back and allowed the Cats first use after the break. We lost some shape and were forced on the back foot in not being able to get our run and carry together. Doncaster turned the tables and kicked a quick 3 goals to get them back in the contest at ¾ time down by only 12 points. In one of his more clinical and inspirational addresses, Coach Mat Eccles steadied the ship in the huddle and made some moves that would lead to victory and a spot in the Semis. In the end a solid win by 5 goals led by 7 separate goal kickers. With some players returning, the Colts will be in good shape today against a fired up Norwood, keen to atone for their showing against Noble Park. It should be a ripper contest. Let’s go Burners! MOOROOLBARK

3RD QUARTER

MOOROOLBARK: It was a week-end of mixed fortunes for the Mustangs during the first week of finals. The Seniors came up against a very formidable Bayswater side on Saturday in the 2nd semi and were given a football lesson. The relentless pressure applied by them ensured we had no easy possessions and the final margin showed that. Having said that, we must now regroup for this weeks do or die preliminary final against Wantirna South and strive for another crack at Baysie in the Grand Final. The Reserves provided the bright spot in Sunday’s 1st semi against Lilydale. We jumped to an early lead and were able to maintain that lead throughout the game to come out 30 point victors to also earn a place in the prelim final, also against Wanny Sth. Goals were shared around with Dimma, Fordy & Bonfa bagging 2 each. Mick Eshetu-Mulugeta is in great form and earned the BOG. He was ably supported by McGee, Rosendale, N.Maxwell, Plant & Watkins. It’s been a great year down at the Heights Reserve this season, both on and off the field, with 50th anniversary celebrations being the highlight, so a grand final berth would really be the icing on the cake. GO MUSTANGS !!!

WANTIRNA SOUTH: Today the Senior Team plays in the Preliminary Final against Mooroolbark. This opportunity comes after a good win in last weeks 1st Semi Final win over East Doncaster. Last time we met, the Senior Team won at home, but lost earlier in the year at Mooroolbark. It was a very tight season with most sides capable of beating each other all year. Any team who didn’t bring their best effort, generally lost this year, so we understand the massive challenge of winning a Preliminary Final today Senior Coach Matt Clark is a very experienced football person and has led the club through many challenges this year and in previous years to successes. Clarky has the players believing they are good enough to win any game of footy they play in, but they must crack in with “team first” actions. The Club’s focus with the Senior Team players to be the best they can be with their footy as a team and to enjoy the benefits that brings. All resources and off field strategies of the club are about helping our players to enjoy being part of a community that simply loves footy and to overcome every challenge they face. Presentation Night: October 14th - Knox Club - New format this year Bookings are essential and details will be out soon - Check the club Facebook page or the club website wsfcdevils.com.au or the club’s team app. While you are online, join the devils secure email list to be in the loop with all the club news and events. WANTIRNA SOUTH: After falling short against Bayswater last week, the Development Team faces a real challenge against Mooroolbark in the Preliminary Final . The team has a good balance of young talented players and experienced finals performers who are keen to crack in and achieve the best they can. Coach Luke Slater guides and manages the players with a firm, no nonsense style which the players have responded very well to all season. Many players have improved their football as a result and now have the opportunity to see what their best effort brings them. At Wantirna South , the focus of the Development Team (playing in the Reserves competition) is to develop players to play consistent football and gain the confidence to become regular Senior Team players. This year 40 players on the clubs list have played in the Senior Team. Today the players have the opportunity to crack in and enjoy their footy and help their team mates do their best. It is a big day for the Devils with all sides in the Preliminary Final. Having said that, we must now re-group for this weeks do or die preliminary final against Wantirna South and strive for another crack at Baysie in the Grand Final.

WANTIRNA SOUTH: Today the Wantirna South Under 19’s play in the Preliminary Final in 2nd Division against Croydon. This is the first time all our teams have played in a Preliminary Final in EFL 2nd Division in the same year ! After a hard fought win in the 1st Semi against Mitcham last week, our team has the belief it has the talent and game to win finals footy. The club and supporters have watched the team improve under Coach Nick Adam, with many talented players enjoying their footy and developing into future senior players for the Devils. The focus of the U19’s is to prepare players to play senior football, including discipline, game style and strategy. The team has made good steps in these areas, and by making the finals season and winning, the players get to enjoy the benefits of their efforts. TEMPLESTOWE: The Final’s Race to the Finish continues this weekend at East Burwood Reserve where the Dockers meet the Ringwood Redbacks for a place in the Grand Final to meet up with UFTG Kings. Two great games last Saturday – both against UFTG for a Grand Final berth. The Reserves game see-sawed with 1 point difference at half time. By game’s end, the Sons of the Ones winning by 10 points. Game on in Q4 – the Stowe with the breeze stormed home with 4 goals 2 points to the Kings nil just falling short by 1 point. Single goal kickers only and BOG Alex Wadsworth. RINGWOOD: Last Sunday the Seniors continued their finals campaign with a great win over Heathmont in the first semi final. After a slow start in which goals were hard to come by we started to get up and going and held a handy two goal lead at quarter time. We managed to stay on top during the second term and increase our lead by half time and continued our good form in the all important third quarter and again managed to outscore our opponent and held a handy 3 goal lead going into the last quarter. We finished the game full of running and applied good defensive pressure to put the squeeze on Heathmont and eventually ran out impressive winners by 33 points. The Reserves didn’t fare quite so well and lost their semi final by the solitary point which was decided in the final minute of the game. After a good start in which we led by three goals at quarter time we continued to control the game until the last quarter in which Boronia worked their way into the game and virtually stole the game in a heart breaking loss for the boys. Geoff and everyone associated with the team are to be congratulated for a great season and we are proud of the way you represented the club during the year and for all your achievements. Today is a huge day for the club with the Seniors playing in the preliminary final against Templestowe which we are looking forward to. The whole club are behind the coaches and players and we wish them all the best as they fight for a berth in next weeks grand final.

MEDIA TIPS Phil Murton – EFL CEO Ferntree Gully After a perfect home and away season the Eagles got the loss they needed in the semi and now enter the grand final with some pressure released. I’m tipping a less than one goal margin or even OT! Frank Bibby/ Blue Ribbon Medal - Bill Morrison (Ferntree Gully)

V

Dyson Baker – EFL Media Manager Ferntree Gully The Eagles in 2016 set their eyes in the prize in Round 1 and haven’t looked back, a recruiting drive in the off-season coupled with the development of some young talent has left them in the prime position for not only a premiership but an assault on Division 3 in 2017. Forest Hill need to control the game early if they are going to have hope of holding on, otherwise, a Ferntree Gully side with their tails up could get damaging. Frank Bibby/ Blue Ribbon Medal – Lachlan Kennedy (Ferntree Gully)

Ross Couzens – Inside Football Ferntree Gully The Eagles were a five-game better side during the home-and-away rounds and only dropped the second semi-final by 16 points with one fewer scoring shots. Expect the Eagles to make the necessary adjustments in the decider and come out on top. Frank Bibby/ Blue Ribbon Medal Kieran Gray (Ferntree Gully)

Gus MacLeod – EFL Media Team Ferntree Gully to win by 29 points Division 4 in 2016 has been dominated by Ferntree Gully until Semi Final 2 came along. Forest Hill have been knocking on the door all year and finally got one over the Eagles in Week 1 of the finals. I am of the view that a loss isn’t always a bad result. Ferntree Gully will bounce and become 2016 premiers. Frank Bibby/ Blue Ribbon Medal Andrew Cavarra (Ferntree Gully)

www.efl.org.au

Ray Baird – EFL Media Team Ferntree Gully by 11 points My tip for the Division 4 Grand Final is Ferntree Gully to win by 11pts in a hard fought encounter. Forest Hill will jump them early and probably go into the halftime break with a one goal advantage. The Zebras will extend that lead at 3/4 time to two goals. The final quarter will see the more experienced Eagles Morrison, Edwards, Goodman and Petracca stand up and guide their side to victory. Frank Bibby/ Blue Ribbon Medal Michael Caligiuri (Ferntree Gully)

Wayne Brasher – EFL Media Team Ferntree Gully by 24 Points. The Eagles have been the form side in Division 4 this season and deserve to be favourites, however Forest Hill are a proven finals performer and boast a win over the Gully in the 2nd Semi-Final. The Zebras will be seeking redemption after last year’s early exit from finals and are right in this however Ferntree Gully will prevail in a titanic struggle. Frank Bibby/ Blue Ribbon Medal Jye Goodman (Ferntree Gully)

Jason Irvine – EFL Media Team Ferntree Gully The Eagles run the ball better and use the space out the back and on the other side of the ground. Can break through a pack very easily. Very reliable in front of goal. Won every home and away game, lacked a mentality in the first final against Forest Hill but will bounce back this week against them again after a comfortable win over Donvale. Frank Bibby/ Blue Ribbon Medal Michael Edwards (Ferntree Gully)

Eamonn O’Molloy – Leader News Ferntree Gully It’ll be close but the Eagles have been the best side all season. I reckon the semi-final defeat will have eradicated any complacency and taught them some valuable lessons. Frank Bibby/ Blue Ribbon Medal Bill Morrison (Ferntree Gully)

FOREST HILL: The Grand Final is upon us and we have both Seniors and Reserves playing in the season decider. All the hard work put in over the year comes down to one game. Our Netballers started our Grand Final run but couldn’t get it done going down by 4 goals. Congratulations to all our Netballers on a great season. The Feagles got to a preliminary final but came up short. Again, the boys are to be commended for a great season and they have improved steadily over the season. Well done to Christian and all his support staff on a great year. Now we take on the old rivals Ferntree Gully, knowing that our best is more than a match for them with both our sides defeating the Eagles in the semis to book our spots. Commiserations to those that won’t play today, whether by injury or selection decision, but your efforts have got us here today. Playing Grand Finals is great but winning flags is the ultimate measure of success. Good luck to all taking the field today and we know our players will do the club proud. Regardless of the results we will be celebrating or consoling back at the club rooms after the game so hope to see plenty of the Zebra faithful there. We then wind up the 2016 season with our Presentation Night on Friday 16th September. Keep an eye on the club’s Facebook page for further details. Go Zebras let’s get 2 flags today!

DONVALE: Donvale’s senior side bowed out of the finals last weekend, beaten by the bigger, stronger Ferntree Gully team. We wish both Ferntree Gully and Forest Hill the best of luck for today’s Senior and Reserve grade grand finals. These sides deserve to be playing today and we hope the matches are close and entertaining. We are tremendously proud of our senior group this season. From one win for 2015 to a Preliminary final twelve months later is a great achievement. Well done to Matt Fife and his coaching team, captain Karl Toce and all the players who have bled Green” in 2016. The future of Donvale is on show today in the Under 19 Grand Final. This side has been brilliantly led by first year coach Sam D’Argenio and captain James Rausa and have shown spirit, determination and skill all season to make it here today. Congratulations to Ferntree Gully for also making the Grand Final. These two sides have clearly been the best in Division 4 this year and we expect another great contest. The vast majority of our Under 19 side have been at Donvale since juniors and they represent some of the best collective talent our club has produced. Good Luck today boys. Thanks to all the Donvale supporters who have come out early today to cheer our side on. Thanks again to our great sponsors for 2016, including Venture Egg Financial Services, Konstruct Recycling and Jellis Craig Manningham. Tickets are available now for our Grand Final business lunch on Friday September 30th. Keep your eye on our Facebook page and website for further details.

EASTERN RANGES Club Notes Finals Week 1: It is an exciting day today for the Range as we kick off our 2016 TAC Cup finals campaign at IKON Park in the 1st Elimination Final up against the Sandringham Dragons! It is sure to be a challenging game as the Dragons have performed well throughout the season. After finishing 8th on the TAC Cup ladder, the Ranges will be hoping to emulate their finals run of 2015 where the side made it to the Grand Final from outside the top 4. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our club and player sponsors for their support throughout this season. In particular, we would like to make special mention to all those who help the club prepare for match days: Basile Imports who provide pasta and sauce, North Ringwood Fruit Market, Subway Chirnside Park and Bakers Delight
